BACC NEWSLETTER | 814-368-7115 | bradfordchamber.com | www.facebook.com/BradfordPAChamber

In May, we had the pleasure of co-sponsoring a Historic Preservation Workshop - “Show Me the Money: FinancingTools for Historic Building Rehabilitation” - held at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

This day-long workshop included presentations on: • Your Best Brand: Economic Benefits of Historic Preservation• Introduction to Financial Analysis Tools - How to Calculate the Funding Gap • Using Real Estate Development Finance Tools• Closing the Deal - Taking a Project through the Real Estate Development Process to Actual Implementation • A site visit/tour of the Medical Arts Plaza building

One of the many things we learned throughout the day was that the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office (PA SHPO) is beginning the multi-year planning process for their next statewide historic preservation plan. A key part of that process is hearing from Pennsylvanians about what matters to them, to learn what the agency can be doing to strengthen our communities through historic preservation. To help them better know what matters to residents in our area, in terms of historic preservation, please take a few minutes and complete their survey found at:www.surveymonkey.com/r/PA_community_connections

Another great resource for those in our area to be aware of is the City of Bradford - Office of Economic and Community Development (OECD) web site, which has recently been updated. Visit www.bradfordpa.org to access a wide variety of information provided by OECD.

Hello, everyone. It’s that time of year...the sun is finally peeking through, the school year is coming to an end, and people are gearing up for summer vacation.

For many that means heading to a beach, or traveling to visit family or landmarks around the country, but I’d like to encourage you to also think about those places and things right here in our own area that you might not have visited for a while (if ever!).

In recent months, I’ve had the opportunity to visit some of our local sights - a few, admittedly, for the first time - with both local residents and guests from outside the area. You may have seen articles or Facebook posts about the ELK Charity Challenge, an “Amazing Race” style event that came through our area during this last week of May. Our friends at the Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce put us in touch with ELK staff earlier this year as the race was being planned. When asked what locations in and around Bradford they should consider for their itinerary - with an emphasis on local history and/or offerings unique to the area - we gave them several suggestions and then tagged along for site visits. At each stop, the excitement was contagious, from both our guests and their potential hosts, about the opportunity to share what makes Bradford special.

(continued on page 9)

Northwest Bank again ranks highest in customer satisfaction in the Mid- Atlantic Region, according to the J.D. Power 2016 U.S. Retail Banking Satisfaction Study. Conducted quarterly from

April 2015 to January 2016, the study analyzes the overall satisfaction customers have with their retail banking experience based on channel activities, account information, facility, fees, problem resolution and product offerings. Northwest received the highest satisfaction score in the Mid-Atlantic Region, which includes Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. This is the fifth time in seven years that Northwest has received this honor.

The stockholders of Northwest Bancshares, Inc., the parent company of Northwest Bank, elected Mark Paup as a member of its Board of Directors at the company’s Annual Meeting of Stockholderson April 20, 2016. Mr. Paup is President and CEO of Zippo Manufacturing Company and W. R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company. Mr. Paup began his career with Zippo in 1994 as a licensing coordinator, and has since heldpositions as national sales manager, European sales manager, global marketing director and vice president of sales and marketing.

The Education Consortium of the Upper Allegheny has been awarded $480,000 in state funding as part of an effort to provide area residents with access to affordable higher education and new career opportunities for students. Visit www.communityedcenter.com/rrcnorthernpa for information or contact Duane Vicini, the Rural Regional College of Northern PA project manager, at 814-757-5731.

Three long-time University of Pittsburgh at Bradford employees will retire this spring with a total of 86 years of service

to the university. Lizbeth Matz, associate professor of accounting, will retire after 27 years of teaching; Sharie Radzavich, administrative assistant for the Division of Communication and the Arts, will retire with 30 years of service; and Laurel Phillips, director of human resources, will retire with 29 years of service.

Kara’s message...continued from page 3 Whether you’re relatively new to the area, hosting family and friends from out of town, or have lived here your whole life, there are great sights worth seeing. Some of the comments I heard during our Leadership McKean group’s travels through the county on the Backyard Tour, organized by the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau, were “I’ve really taken this for granted,” and “I had no idea this was here!”

I would encourage you to take the time this summer, and year-round, to seek out those local features: our museums, our parks, arts and entertainment, and more. As you take your family through the Eldred WWII Museum or the Penn Brad Oil Museum, you may learn something new. As you explore Rock City Park and the Allegheny National Forest, you’ll encounter incredibleviews and natural wonders. And as you attend local concert or theatre shows, or dine at restaurants that you haven’t tried before, you just may discover some new favorites along the way.

If you’re looking for ideas, visit our BACC member directory on our web site, or stop in to the Chamber office. We’ll be happy to share with you some suggestions for places to explore!

10 Easy Ways to Increase Sales

BACC NEWSLETTER | 814-368-7115 | bradfordchamber.com | www.facebook.com/BradfordPAChamber

6. Be Ruthless What you are not selling is as important as what you are selling. Take a look at products or services that are simply glued to the shelves and get rid of them. Don’t be reluctant to retire certain products or services. One secret to success is being able to detach yourself from the emotion of a business decision. If something is not selling, don’t stock it and don’t waste money marketing it.

7. Open Your Eyes Now is the time to take a look at what your competitors are doing. It is also an excellent time to look at similar businesses in different geographical areas to see how they are trading and to see if lessons can be learned.

8. Raise Awareness You know all about your business, as does your family, but never presume that your target audience does. Think about how you can market your business. Go back to your sales strategy in point 1 and identify your ideal customers and then target them where they are.

Tip: Use events such as Chamber networking events to meet new people and to gain market intelligence.

9. Look the Part When was the last time you looked at your branding? Brandingisn’t just a logo or website. It is everything from auto signatures on email to letterhead to company vehicles. There are many options available to help you get your branding right. There are also examples of how to carry out a brand audit online.

10. Stay in Shape Identify training needs and areas for professional improvement. There’s a good chance your local chamber can help you with training through networking and other learning-based events. They are also a great resource on what your community offers.

Every company needs sales to be successful. In order to do so sales and marketing strategies should be reviewed periodically to ensure they are the most effective for your business.

Brian Cleary is the Chief Executive of Clonmel Chamber of Commerce, one of the largest business services organizations in Ireland. He’s also the past director of Chambers Ireland.

One of the most obvious ways to boost revenue is to make more sales. Here are ten ways you can start doing that today:

1. Do You Have A Sales Strategy? Most businesses think they have a strategy, but they don’t. Now is a good time to develop one. You need to consider who your ideal customer is and what are the products and services that provide the best return for you. Keep it simple and keep referring back to it.

2. Are You Missing Opportunities? You could best sum this up as “preach to the converted.” Your current customers are likely an excellent source for new business. You may have a product or service that they may not know about that might suit their business. Marketing to your current client base should be your first approach.

3. Back to Basics Oftentimes the problem is businesses have veered from their target market and fail to realize it. Take an honest look at what your market is and where you are at the moment. Ask yourself some tough questions, such as: “Have I focused too much on one sector of my business?” or “Have I deviated from my sales strategy and forgotten about my target market?” In struggling economies many businesses survive by “throwing everything at it.” But that’s not a good long-term strategy. It’s time to assess the business and get back to selling the right products to the right customers.

4. Customer is King Simon & Garfunkel knew this 45 years ago when they sang‘Keep the Customer Satisfied.’ In an age when almost anything can be bought or sold online at any time of the day or night by anyone, the need for excellent customer service has never been greater. Some businesses have built their reputations on looking after generations of families. Your business can do that too by ensuring that staff are properly trained and that customers get consistent excellent service every time that they deal with your business.

5. The Price is Right Have you considered how your product or service is priced? What research have you carried out to make sure that it is competitively priced and that overheads and margin are factored in? It is very easy to sell too cheaply just as it is very easy to end up broke.

This is the fifth time in seven years that Northwest has received this honor.

BACC Board of Directors Historic Preservation
