CHAPTER03–TheUnmistakableHonestyoftheWritersoftheBibleAtteststoItsHeavenlyOrigin

Thetitleofthischaptersuggestsawidefieldofstudythelimitsofwhichwecannowonlyskirthereandthere.TobeginwiththewritersoftheOldTestament.

HadthehistoricalpartsoftheOldTestamentbeenaforgery,ortheproductionofuninspiredmen,theircontentswouldhavebeenverydifferenttowhattheyare.EachofitsBookswaswrittenbyadescendantofAbraham,yetnowheredowefindthebraveryoftheIsraelitesextolledandneveroncearetheirvictoriesregardedastheoutcomeoftheircourageormilitarygenius;onthecontrary,successisattributedtothepresenceofJehovahtheGodofIsrael.Tothisitmightbereplied,Heathenwritershaveoftenascribedthevictoriesoftheirpeoplestotheinterventionoftheirgods.Thisistrue,yetthereisnoparallelatallbetweenthetwocases.Comparisonisimpossible.Heathenwritersinvariablyrepresenttheirgodsasbeingblindlypartialtotheirfriendsandwhenevertheirfavoritesfailedtocomeoutvictorioustheirdefeatisattributedtotheoppositionofothergodsortoablindandunyieldingfate.Incontradistinctiontothis,thedefeatsofIsrael,asmuchastheirvictories,areregardedascomingfromJehovah.TheirsuccesseswerenotduetomerepartialityinGod,butareuniformlyviewedasconnectedwithacarefulobservanceofHiscommands;and,inlikemanner,theirdefeatsareportrayedastheoutcomeoftheirdisobedienceandwaywardness.IftheytransgressedHislawstheyweredefeatedandputtoshame,eventhoughtheirGodwastheAlmighty.Butwehavedigressedsomewhat.ThattowhichwedesiretodirectattentionisthefactthatmenwhoweretheirowncountrymenhavechronicledthehistoryoftheIsraelites,andthereinhavefaithfullyrecordedtheirdefeatsnottoaninexorablefate,nortobadgeneralshipandmilitaryfailures,buttothesinsofthepeopleandtheirwickednessagainstGod.SuchaGodisnotthecreationofthehumanmind,andsuchhistorianswerenotactuatedbythecommonprinciplesofhumannature.

Thesinofidolatry,whileitistheworstofwhichIsraelwasguilty,isnottheonlyevilrecordedagainstthem—theirwholehistoryisonelongstoryofrepeatedapostasyfromJehovahtheirGod.AftertheyhadbeenemancipatedfromthebondageofEgyptandhadbeenmiraculouslydeliveredfromtheircruelmastersattheRedSea,theycommencedtheirjourneytowardsthePromisedLand.Betweenthemandtheirgoallayamarchacrossthewilderness,andherethedepravityoftheirheartswasfullymanifested.InspiteofthefactthatJehovah,byoverthrowingtheirenemies,hadplainlydemonstratedthatHewastheirGod,yetnosoonerwasthefaithoftheIsraelitesputtothetestthantheirheartsfailedthem.
