Sustainable chemistry from tomato skinsat Azienda Agricola Virginio Chiesa

The “AZIENDA AGRICOLA CHIESA” (SME) is a family-run farming enterprise.Its initial activities were the cereals production and the beef cattle farming.

For zootechnical feeding we use, in addition to cereals, several agro-industrialby-products, including the tomato peels.

The main productiveactivity in the last 8 yearshas been the productionof electricity fromrenewable sources.

For biogas production weuse the same by-productsas for the cattle andduring this anaerobicfermentation they arecompletely decomposedexcept for the tomatopeels.



Given the ineffectiveness of the tomato peels in the fermentation process we have used thecollaboration of SSICA in order to add value to this material.

Our Participation in BIOCOPAC project allowed us to patent a method to extract the cutinfrom the peels, upstream our use, that doesn’t change the properties of the product andthat however allows its use.

The extraction method foundedhas created the necessity toindustrialize the process to havea sustainable and marketableproduct.

Our Participation at BIOCOPAC PLUS project took shape with the physical realizationof the demonstrative plant for cutin extraction at our farm.



At our farming enterprise it has been found thearea where build the demonstrative plant.

The works to realize this plant started lastsummer.
