The VP’s ColumnThe VP's Word

By Donna Stewart

I would like to thank Tony fororganizing our event at theMuckenthaler Cultural Center. He did a wonderful job. It was agreat day, with our Club beingwell represented with 35 cars inattendance. I really enjoyed seeing all the other classic andvintage autos. Some of them I had never heard of or had thepleasure of seeing before. The show was really well donewith many activities. They were really impressed with ourclub presence. The Center has invited us to return nextyear. We will be sure and put it on our calendar of futureevents.

At the upcoming June Meeting, we would like you to driveyour Vettes and be there at 6 p.m. It has been arranged withSusan Carpenter, a reporter with the Orange CountyRegister, to take a club picture and write an article for theAutomotive section, which comes out on Fridays, to helpkick off our Annual Car Show. The picture will be taken inthe back parking lot at the Sizzler. We hope as many of youas possible are able to make it at that time. It will be greatpublicity for the Club.

A few of us attended the open house at Downey Union HighSchool and toured the Multi Million dollar Automotive Centerand Engineering Departments. It is absolutely amazing whatthese promising high school students are accomplishing. The Automotive department is all computerized with autobays for hands on learning and just as well equipped as anyprofessional car dealership. The Engineering department isworking with Airplanes, Space travel, Robotics, and 3-Dprinting machines, well beyond their years. There is a greatfuture ahead for these many gifted youths.

The June meeting is very busy for us. Be sure and checkthe events calendar so you won’t miss anything.

Please try to make it to Shirley and Garry Jones “Bashbefore the Bash” on Friday, June 26th at 2 p.m. You willhave a great time. Caravan time and meeting places tocome later.

Our Car Show is rapidly approaching. Raffle prizes areneeded. Please do your part.

Linda Norris and I are about to go on the “Road Again” withan approximately 10 day trip to the great state of Texas toenjoy some of my family and attend the high schoolgraduation of a Granddaughter in San Antonio and Linda, with her family in Corpus Christi, I’m sure we will have somegreat stories to relate to you upon our return.

Larry Shinoda

When asked who is Larry Shinoda, few Corvette owners know who he is. Larry, a Japanese American, was born in 1930 in Los Angeles, CA and developed hisartistic talents in grade school. He was interned with hisfamily during WWII at Camp Manzanar. During those campdays, he made a chair for his grandmother out of woodencrates, thus showing his creative talents early.

After the war, he built hot rods and drag raced them on thestreets of L.A. In 1955 he won the first NHRA Nationals inGreat Bend, Kansas with his 1924 Ford Roadster.

He attended Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, but was “kicked out.” He then went to work for Ford MotorCo. in 1955. He briefly worked with Packard, and then withGeneral Motors in late 1956.

Shinoda got his first big break when, at 28 years old, he wastapped by Bill Mitchell to transform the 1957 Q-Corvette tothe 1959 Stingray Racer. This formed the styling theme forthe 1963 Corvette.

During the 13 years with GM, Larry designed numerousspecial Corvettes, Corvairs and several race cars. Hedesigned Pat Flaherty’s 1956 Indy 500 winning Watson-Offenhauser.

In 1968, Shinoda went to work for Ford Motor Co and hisfirst project was the high-performance Mustang known asThe Boss 302

He died in 1997 of Kidney failure. I entered the picture in2011when at our Bakery/Café in La Habra, a Japanese ladyand her husband came in to eat. I was wearing a car shirtwith a Corvette on the front. The lady was Grace Nakamura. She said “my brother designed that car.” I knew who de-signed the car and said “your brother was Larry Shinoda.”Yes, she said. I’ve had a friendship with her and her hus-band, Yoshi, ever since then.

His drawings have been given to the Japanese-AmericanMuseum in Los Angeles. His sister, Grace, made it possiblefor me to acquire a large photo of Larry with two of the carshe designed.Larry had signed the picture.

We never know how the people we meet will relate to thethings we do in life. Corvette, Larry Shinoda, GraceNakamura, Tony Schavone…they all came together tocomplete a picture story and bring me closer to someone Inever knew.

More later. Tony

On April 9th, 2015, the West Coast Region of NCCC opened its doors for its second regionalconvention. The three day Convention was held again at the Silverton Casino in Las Vegas kicked offwith a pool side party that set the tone for a great weekend to come. The Silverton was the anchorhotel for all the events which included high and low speed events at Spring Mountain in Pahrump, apeople’s choice car show and a Highlights of Las Vegas Rally with 2 embedded Poker Rallyes and aslot tournament which gave all participants something to do.

When itwas all said and done, there were 247 participants and the events were well attended.

The major sponsor for the convention was Falken Tires. Michelin donated a set of tires for the raffle at the awardsceremony. In addition, six clubs from the West Coast Region shared the duties for organizing and running each event thatwas offered. Administration and legal was handled by Newport Harbor Corvettes. Tech was done by Las Vegas CorvetteAssociation. The first two events on Friday were held at the Spring Mountain Motor Sport Ranch in Pahrump Nevada.Vettes-R-Us hosted the low speed event and Corvette Super Sports hosted the high speed event. There was also a SlotTournament hosted by Cindy Orrico Friday night. Saturday’s events were the People’s Choice Car Show presented by theInland Empire Corvette Club and the Highlights of Las Vegas Chance Rallies presented by Pomona Valley CorvetteAssociation.

New Adventures from the Past President:

On May 2nd, 3 CSS racers showed up at the track in Santa Maria. It was almost going to be just 2 racers because Kevingot lost and was wondering around on the wrong side of the Santa Maria Airport. But Kevin is resourceful. He called BudNorris, waking him up, I am told, who called his brother Ed, to help Kevin. While Ed provided turn by turn instructions toget Kevin to the correct side of the airport, we notified Debbie Mahoney who is an ATC trained guard who was stationedat the entry gate that Kevin would be arriving momentarily. As I was checking in with Gale Haugen, VTV President, Iexplained the issue, to which she just smiled. Pictures of Deb and Gale are included because we like to include our bestfriends in our Newsletter.

This was a different race this time. Usually one of the CSS members will end up running unopposed. But as we pointchasers know, a win is a win and points are points. But this time, with Kevin in his new Stingray and Ed in his new (to himanyway) C6 Z06, they were in different classes and that made for some interesting races especially since Grandsportsand Stingrays are in the same class. I had a different set of races too. Normally, my competition is Allen Morris, our WestCoast RE. Allen and I make each other better and sometimes he wins and sometimes I win, but we have fun doing it andeach of us gets better. But this time I had a father/son team racing the father's much newer C6 coupe than mine. It was areal dueling contest. After the first lap where I saw what I was up against, I got with the program and dropped my secondlap score by 4 full seconds. I kept doing better each time which I think frustrated my competition because the father/sonteam on each of their group runs did reasonably well, but got messed up trying to avoid those pesky orange cones. As EdNorris has told me many a time, autocrossing is all about "Seat Time". I think that since I had just come off of a Secondplace on the high speed autocross at the West Coast Convention at Spring Mountain in Pahrump, I knew exactly how tostay out in front of my competition and received 2 first place trophies.

Ed must have known what to do as well because he got the fastest time of the day at 49 seconds. Ed is an amazing driverand just killed his competition and got 2 first pace trophies too. Kevin is learning more and more about his Stingray and hegot 2 first place trophies as well. All in all, CSS did very well and as point chasers, it was exhilarating for the 3 of us tomove ahead of our point chasing friends, at least until the next event.

Fallbrook's Top News for May 29, 2015

Here is the 50th Fallbrook vintage car show that was put on last Sunday at the Pala Mesa Resort of Fallbrook. The resorthad contacted the Vintage club about having the show there this year to help promote the resort. Our club, "The Shafters"has a number of members that belong to both clubs. The vintage club asked us if we would help in the laying out of thefield on Saturday and to place the cars on the field on Sunday and to direct traffic in and out of the venue. There are threepractice fields that are side by side. The center field is the one we used for the show cars. It is over 700' long and almost300' wide. The other two fields were for parking.

Things were looking great as the entry list of 425 was filled three weeks before the event. That should have been the cluethat we were going to have a really good turnout. The show cars were coming in at 6:30AM and much to our surprise asubstantial amount of spectators were steaming in. Two lanes of spectators and two lanes of show cars. It was controlledmayhem at its best. By 9AM the almost all the show cars were in place, and I got a one hour rest before helping with thejudging. There were at least forty people doing the judging in pairs. Locating the cars is always a time waster, but this timethe cars were logged in as they parked as to row number and position on the row. The judges were given a group of carsto judge with the paper work set up in alphabetical (row) order and numerical (station) order on that row. The car classwasn't set up in groups so they were scattered al over the field. This helped judging tremendously. Trophies were passedout at 3PM.

Cars started leaving all three fields at just about the same time, 3:30PM and in one hour or so we were down to a dozencars left on the field, mostly our own club members.

According to the newspaper there was ten thousand spectators. They were planning for one thousand. There was an hourand a half wait to get in. The main highway, Old 395, was backed up two miles to the north and a mile to the south. Thatis what we could see, we didn't see the seven mile backup on east bound 76, which is presently being upgraded from itssingle lane status to two, The turnout at Old 395 North would only allow 8 cars per signal event. Hopefully they will havethe extra lane next year.

Enjoy, David A

The 50th annual Fallbrook Vintage Car Show was indeed pure gold. Breaking all attendance records and number of clas-sic car entries, the spectacular event, held Sunday, May 24, on the grass at Pala Mesa Resort was a sight to behold.

Where You Can Find Corvette Parts and Merchandise

For those of you who have been into Corvettes for awhile most – or all – of the following will not be news toyou, but for you relative newcomers to the love of Vettes this offering is being made to help you find the partsyou may need for your classic or the trim add-ons you might want to buy to personalize your Vette or theclothing, gear, etc. you might like to own to show others of your interest in the sport.

It’s amazing just how many publications are out there that are dedicated to Corvettes and how helpful many ofthem can be. Following is a list and quick summary of the more popular catalogs that you might want to lookinto. Most of them are available for routine periodic mailing if you request it, and most of them have a web sitefrom which you can peruse their offerings. Me, I prefer to receive the catalogs so that I can better see justwhat’s out there I might not have not seen before.

The three largest, most popular catalogs with the most items that are non-“parts” are:

a. Mid America Motorworks, www.mamotorworkscom, (800) 500-1500;b. Eckler’s Corvette, www.ecklersCorvette.com, (800) 327-4868;c. Corvette America, www.CorvetteAmerica.com, (800) 458-3475.

Those publications periodically also publish catalogs geared specifically for a single generation of Corvettes sowhen they ask you for the year and model you drive don’t be afraid to tell them.

Then there are catalogs that are almost exclusively for parts, especially of older model Corvettes:

a. Volunteer Vette Products, www.volvette.com, (865) 521-9100;b. J & D Corvette, www.jdcorvette.com, (800) 838-8353 (located locally in Bellflower, CA).

For trim and accessory items as well as clothes, furniture and the like, you should look at:

a. Corvette Central, www.CorvetteCentral.com, (800) 345-4122. They have an accessories catalog and aseparate catalog of parts, etc., for each generation of Corvettes.

b. Burston Marketing’s Corvette Collection, www.CorvetteCollection.com, (800) 653-1375.c. And finally, the catalog from the retail store at the National Corvette Museum,

www.CorvetteMuseum.org, (800) 538-3883.

In addition to the above, you might also consider visiting the show rooms of Corvette Mike’s at 1133 NorthTustin Avenue and West Coast Corvettes, 1210 N. Kraemer Blvd., both are located near each other inAnaheim just off the 91 freeway in Anaheim. They have a selection of GM authorized accessories and clothesfor sale, as well as an indoor Corvette sales room with used road gems. Both also maintain servicedepartments for installing accessories and the like and for general maintenance of Corvettes. West CoastCorvettes has a new catalog that was just released and is available for pick-up at the store. (Price ispre-printed on each catalog as $12.95, but don’t be fooled, they’re free - just ask for one.)

Connell Chevrolet helps sponsor our Corvette Club. Theyhave been family owned and operated by the Doddridgefamily since 1989 when Paul Doddridge purchased thefranchise from John Connell. Paul is still active with thedealership, but he also spends a lot of his time at his ranchin Montana. His son Wayne Doddridge is the activeGeneral Manager.

Connell Chevrolet was first opened in the late 1950’s andwas located in Newport Beach on Pacific Coast Highway. Then in 1963, they relocated to Harbor Boulevard in CostaMesa.

Connell has one of the largest new, certified, andpre-owned inventories in Southern California. If you’relooking for a specific Tahoe, Silverado pickup, Corvette, ora late-model used car or truck, chances are, ConnellChevrolet has it.

And over the years, Connell’s Service Department has builta reputation fixing your GM vehicle right the first time and ina timely manner. They currently have more ChevroletMaster Technicians than most other Chevrolet dealers inthe entire USA.

When you go to Connell for service ask for Todd Mack.Todd has been a Service Consultant at Connell for over 20years and is a recommended advisor in the Corvette forum. For you “do-it-yourselfers,” Connell Chevrolet has anexpansive Parts Department. They are one of the largestwholesale dealers in the area. And if they don’t have yourspecific automotive part on hand, they can probably secureit within a few days.

Lastly, let’s talk about the Connell employee family. Tomany, their employment at Connell is not a job... It’s acareer. Many employees including the sales, service andoffice personnel have worked at Connell for twenty yearsand more. Even the outside vendors who help to supportConnell Chevrolet, have been within the Doddridge familyfor many years.

Look for Wayne Doddridge next time you’re at thedealership and introduce yourself. He is a family man with6 children and supports the local community. We are very fortunate as a club to be able to hold our meetings at the Sizzler. We have a facility with a large privateroom to use, a separate entry into the room, plenty of parking, a server who makes sure we are well taken careof, no trying-to-figure-out the check hassles, it’s available to the club at no charge to us and they even provide afree meal for the dinner raffle every month. What we can do in return is to buy some dinners on meeting nights andI would ask all of us to please do this. This is the way we can show them a little support and say “thanks” to theSizzler for what they provide for us. Let’s all try and have our dinner there when we go to the meeting.

I’m sure that most of you know by now that the club has rented a storage space for all the club owned property. There is a ton of car show supplies, banners, records and paperwork, folding tables, etc. I do need to know if youhave any club owned property, what it is and if you would like to have it moved to the storage unit and out of yourhair. I believe we have an E-Z up somewhere, I just don’t know who has it. Please email me if you have anythingand whether you would like it moved to the storage unit or not.

Our board meetings are open to ALL members. We meet on the third Tuesday of every month (except December)and you are all encouraged to attend and see your board of governors in action. There is a notice sent out on the“wires” about 5 days before the meetings with the date, time and location.

If a guest at one of our meetings should ask for or hand you an application for membership, please direct themto the secretary and I will take it from there. The new procedure is designed to simplify and streamlinethe application/membership process. We have had 6 new members this year already!

Support the club, attend the meetings.

Bert
