Looking back over the last year, there were events I could not have

imagined. Events like an election where federal funding for PBS became a focal

point of a national Presidential debate and responses to “firing” Big Bird

garnered 17,000 tweets per minute on Twitter. Or the staff transitions

-some key members of the WCTE family moved on and others arrived - all made

an impact. What was easy to imagine? The continued success of the award – winning

national series originating from the Upper Cumberland that had their start right

here on WCTE - the Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree, Jammin’ at Hippie Jack’s and

Bluegrass Underground (which is nominated for five Emmys!) Or the positive

results WCTE would have on tourism in the Upper Cumberland and beyond with

the TTU Rural Economic Development Initiative that focuses on all fourteen

counties. Or the countless other stories of impact your PBS station had on our

region, on our home.

We had some individuals this year who took a major step in investing in

the future of WCTE. Thanks to their efforts, we have a high definition mobile

production unit to tape all across our region.

In addition, for the first time as a community PBS station, we have a

downtown presence for our staff in Community Engagement, Membership and

Sales. We even have a small downtown studio. There is legacy money invested

in this downtown space... Donna

Castle’s memorial funds. I often

think of Richard and Donna Castle and their sons, Russ, Roger and Art.

Many of you know they began this station and gave so very much to

our community, to our station and to me personally. I have had a 30 year

career in public media because Richard Castle took a chance and gave a

local girl the opportunity to begin and grow in the greatest profession

there is... public broadcasting.

Through all the changes and ups and downs, remember this - WCTE is

truly your PBS station. You have options of what to watch and what to

invest in, but none will deliver to the Upper Cumberland what WCTE will

deliver. In 2013, I encourage you to invest your time watching WCTE,

to engage in our special events, attend community activities like

Community Cinema screenings, become a WCTE ambassador,

establish a planned gift to the station…

and finally just be you... a viewer who cares

enough to be a member.

This is our year together. Thank you and

I hope it is truly the best for each of us!

Ffaces of WCTE

1. Where did you grow up? i grew up in detroit until i was 10 years old and then in cookeville until the present. i am still trying to grow up. ha!

2. Where did you go to school? Jere Whitson elementary Grades 5 through 8 - which is where i first met becky magura. We both took piano lessons from mrs. dimple bassett and performed recitals together. Then on to Putnam county senior high, Tennessee Tech and livingston state vocational school.

3. Tell me about your family. i have been married to Philip Gibbons for nearly 30 years. We have two daughters, Julie and leann Gibbons, and a grand dog, bentlee. my father was ralph cole, who passed away in 1977. my mother is rozelle cole. i have two brothers, both married - dale & Gail cole and Gary & candy cole. my mother & father-in law are sam & onda Gibbons.

4. What jobs have you done over the years at the station?Traffic manager, sales and Programming. i have been involved with community and special events too numerous to mention.

5. What is one of your fondest memories of WCTE? in 1993, i was given the opportunity, along with steve boots, and inspired by my uncle, elmer

montgomery, to produce a documentary called natural beauty: a look at cummins falls. The show included the history and featured the natural beauty of cummins falls with interviews by various members of the cummins family and friends who frequently visited the falls. it’s now known as cummins falls state Park. The documentary continues to air on WcTe periodically.

6. What is one of your funniest memories?several years ago, the WcTe staff was attending a technology conference in nashville. one of our engineers stepped into the hall for a moment, his door closed behind him and there he was, locked outside his room in a hotel hallway wearing nothing but his red speedos. and then we came along. his reaction, and other people’s reactions, is a memory i will never forget.

7. What would you like people to know about WCTE?WcTe is your community-owned upper cumberland Pbs station. it broadcasts quality programming, provides educational outreach, is an award-winning station, has an incredibly talented staff, is engaged in the communities it serves, has a dedicated and active board, and is more than worthy of viewer support. on a personal note, the station has been my employer for many years. i am honored to be part of the WcTe family.

i worked for WcTe for five years

before recently taking a position

as a public historian. i’d like to

express my sincere thanks to

becky magura and WcTe for the

chance to be part of upper

cumberland Pbs.

i had more opportunities for

professional development at WcTe

than anywhere i’ve worked. because

the station is a small shop, everyone

wears multiple hats. WcTe enabled

me to develop my particular skills and

contribute in several unrelated ways. i

made many new friends and enjoyed

my association with the community,

WcTe’s board and especially the staff.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a harder-

working bunch anywhere.

i am a lifelong fan of public media

and have never been more convinced of

its value than i am now. i wish WcTe

and its outstanding crew the very best

for the future. cheers!

A Note of Thanks

From Mark DudneySpotlight On

Sue Gibbons In January, after working at the station 27 years (and 4 months) Sue Gibbons is retiring from WCTE. Sue is WCTE’s Programming Operations Manager. She sets up the programs, promotional spots, the Public Service Announcements – you name it, if it appears on the air, it has been under the watch of Sue Gibbons. Sue doesn’t like the spotlight but she’s one of those reliable people who works diligently in the background and helps makes WCTE tick. She has made a tremendous impact on the success of the station over the years. Sue’s a terrific friend to many of us at the station and throughout community. We’ll miss seeing that twinkle in her eyes on a daily basis.

SOUL FOOD JUNKIESby Byron HurtSoul Food Junkies explores the history and social significance of soul food to black cultural identity and its effect on African Ameri-can health, good and bad. Soul food will also be used as the lens to investigate the dark side of the food industry and the growing food justice movement that has been born in its wake.

THE POWERBROKERby Bonnie BoswellThe Powerbroker follows Whitney Young’s journey from segregated Kentucky to the national campaign for equal rights. During the turbulent 60s, he was a diplomat between those in power and those striving for change. Young had the difficult tasks of calming the fears of white allies, relieving the doubts of fellow civil rights leaders, and responding to attacks from the militant black power movement. This complex tale explores the public and private trials of the man at the center of the storm.

Secrets of Highclere CastleSunday, January 6

Truth and Fiction Collide at the Famed Setting of Blockbuster “Downton Abbey”

it may be more famous now than any time in its

1,300-year history as the setting of the hit drama

“downton abbey,” but england’s highclere castle has

its own extraordinary stories to tell.

in its heyday, highclere was the social epicenter of

edwardian england, playing host to royalty, nobility

and celebrity alike. secreTs of hiGhclere

casTle shows how all the inhabitants of highclere

lived, from the aristocrats who enjoyed a life of luxury

and indolence for centuries in the castle’s rooms (on an

estate as large as new York city’s central Park) to the

army of servants toiling endlessly “below stairs” to

make the lives of their lords and ladies run as smoothly

as possible.

Stay Tuned for the Premiere ofMASTERPIECE “Downton Abbey,” Season 3

ANDREW CARNEGIETuesday, February 5

andrew carnegie’s life embodied the american dream: the immigrant who went from rags to riches, the self-made man who became a captain of industry, the king of steel. he preached the obligation of the wealthy to return their money to the societies where they made it — then added, says carnegie’s biographer, Joseph frazier Wall, “a very revealing sentence. he wrote,’‘and besides, it provides a refuge from self-questioning.’’

JOHN D. ROCKEFELLERTuesday, February 12

for decades, the rockefeller name was despised in america — associated with John d. rockefeller sr.’s feared monopoly, standard oil. by the end of his life, rockefeller had given away half his fortune — but even his philanthropy couldn’t erase the memory of his predatory business practices. his only son, John d. rockefeller Jr., dedicated his life to recasting the family image. in the quest for redemption and respectability, Junior gave away hundreds of millions of dollars and insisted that his children behave impeccably. When he died at age 86, he left his six children and 22 grandchildren an invaluable inheritance: a name that stood for “the well-being of mankind.”

MARKET WARRIORS: Antiquing in Greenwich, NY

This week on marKeT Warriors, the pickers head up

the hudson river to Greenwich, new York, to the Washington

county antique fair, where twice a year the fairgrounds are

host to more than 200 vendors and thousands of shoppers.

This week the pickers have a target assignment to bring

back a military object, and one person’s change of mind may

cost that person the win. off-screen host mark l. Walberg

observes some key finds, which include a victorian birdcage, a

WWii water bag and a German pull toy. The winning picker

is determined at Quinn’s auction Galleries in falls church,

virginia, where their chosen items go under the hammer.

a ngelina Grimké, the outspoken daughter of a wealthy charleston, south carolina plantation family, abandons her life of

privilege and moves to the north, becoming a persuasive and authentic public speaker against slavery. Frederick Douglass, a young slave growing up in maryland, becomes hopeful when he hears about the abolitionists and their push to end slavery. William Lloyd Garrison finds his life’s purpose in the crusade against slavery, founding the newspaper The Liberator, which becomes a powerful voice for the movement. Harriet Beecher Stowe witnesses the brutality of slavery in her first trip to the south, the searing memory of which will change her forever and impact her greatest work. and John brown, galvanized by the murder of an anti-slavery activist, devotes the rest of his life to the cause. radicals. agitators. Troublemakers. liberators. called by many names, the abolitionists tore the nation apart in order to create a more perfect union. men and women, black and white, northerners and southerners, poor and wealthy,

these passionate anti-slavery activists fought body and soul in the most important civil rights crusade in american history. What began as a pacifist movement fueled by persuasion and prayer became a fiery and furious struggle that forever changed the nation. The Abolitionists takes place during some of the most violent and contentious decades in american history, amid white-hot religious passions that set souls on fire, and bitter debates over the meaning of the constitution and the nature of race. it reveals how the movement shaped history by exposing the fatal flaw of a republic founded on liberty for some and bondage for others, setting the nation on a collision course. in the face of personal risks — beatings, imprisonment, even death — abolitionists held fast to their cause, laying the civil rights groundwork for the future and raising weighty constitutional and moral questions that are with us still. Join us for The Abolitionists, Tuesdays, January 8-22, 8 – 9PM with encore presentations Sundays, January 13-27, 9-10PM on WCTE.

Three-part series tells the intertwined stories of five heroes of the original civil

rights movement.

John Brown (T. Ryder Smith) tries to persuade Frederick

Douglass (Richard Brooks) to join his planned assault on

Harper’s Ferry as Shields Green (Thomas Coleman) looks on.

Jeanine Serralles as Angelina Grimké, a prominent Southern abolitionist.

Neal Huff as William Lloyd Garrison, publisher of The Liberator, a prominent abolitionist newspaper, faces an angry mob in Boston.
