THE AUXILIARY BAROMETER

MARCH 2019 UNITY

President’s Message Spring is finally tiptoeing in and we have weathered another Tahoe winter. We had a busy 2018, we welcomed 6 new members, gave a total of $16,000 out to our Barton and Dan Kerr Memorial Scholarship winners, raised over $10,000 through our Cheeseball's and Popup fundraiser's, gave $24,000 to Barton Hospital for 6 Gerry Wheelchair’s for our Skilled Nursing Facility residents, volunteered at the Sports Physicals provided by Barton Health, and at 5 Community Blood Drives. We volunteered at Barton Foundation and events such as the Golf Tournament, Festival of Tree's and Light's and the Gala. We assisted members of our community at the hospital front desk, emergency department, skilled nursing and through our comfort cart. All in all our Auxiliary recorded 9,414 hours, which equates to a value of volunteer time of $232,431, ($24.69 1per hour for 2018). We do not see us slowing down in 2019, our scholarship committee is starting the selection of our 2019 scholarship winners. The Foundation golf tournament will be coming up. Our Ways and Means committee are working on a cookbook as a fundraiser. We had a popup fundraiser, Jan 15th Care Wear made $513.13. There will be more, watch the Barometer for dates. New volunteer opportunities can be opening up in cancer support services, we are in discussions. More information will be coming in future Barometers. I encourage you to contact committee chairs to learn about the committee and join, it is another great way to contribute to the auxiliary. I invite you to attend a board meeting to watch your board in action, it is your board. Unity – The strength of the Pack is the Wolf; the strength of the Wolf is the Pack – Rudyard Kipling Annual Reminder A requirement of Barton Hospital policy is a yearly TB test for employees and volunteers. If you have not gotten your yearly test simply take your badge to admitting, sign in and then proceed to the lab at the snowflake in the hospital. The test is free for volunteers, the test is a blood test. Once you have taken the test please let me know by email ([email protected]) or call 775-721-8659. Thank you.

Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Board Meeting

March 12, 2019 BMH Board Room 9:30am – 12:00pm

The meeting was called to order by President Vikki Egry at 9:34am. The pledge to the flag was led by Maria Lundholm and the Auxiliary Prayer was read by Louise Mitchell. Motion made to accept the agenda as presented by Maria Lundholm/Larry Coffman/approved. Margaret Anton stated that the 2019 budget amount should be corrected to $53,550.00 not $54,050.00 as stated in the 1-8-19 minutes seconded by Maria Lundholm. Minutes approved as corrected. Roll Call: Voting Members Present: Vikki Egry, Maria Lundholm, Karen deVos, Linda Coffman, Margaret Anton, Larry Coffman, Vicki Schussel, Joanne Donmoyer, George Ramirez, Louise Mitchell. Guests: Jenny Taylor, Sue McLaughlin, Cathy Vogelgesang, Clint Purvance. Quorum is present. Public Relations: Sue McLaughlin encouraged everyone to attend the video “To Err Is Human” being shown at the Wellness Center in conjunction with Patient Safety Awareness Week. This is a documentary film about medical errors and how to fix them. She also shared that we have a new neurologist, Dr. Das, who has joined Barton. Dr. Clint Purvance shared that we have a new urologist, Dr. Brian Steixner, starting in April to replace Dr. Anderson. This is patient safety awareness week and our goal is zero harm. Barton Hospital does so well in this area that the California Hospital Association asked us to share safety best practices with other hospitals. Dr. Purvance made two suggestions for the annual donation to the hospital. For patients in surgery there is a need for a new High Definition Camera system that would benefit the Urology Dept. The old camera system is 6 years old and has become outdated. The cost would be $15,000.00. The other need is also in surgery. The Foundation has committed to buying 2 of the 3 needed sterilization carts for instrument trays used in the operating room.

A new sterilization cart would cost $16,000.00. These are two specific needs from the executive team. The annual capital equipment budget is $10 million for this year. Larry Coffman asked Dr. Purvance for a tour of the Operating Room for those auxiliary members who are interested. This will be arranged.

Foundation: Jenny Taylor shared that the Foundation is very busy with “Pink Heavenly” scheduled fundraising event being held on 3-23-19. This will benefit patients in the Lake Tahoe area living with all types of cancer with support services. There is a need for volunteers to help with this event. You can contact Jenny by phone 543-5909. You can go to pinkheavenly.com to make a donation. Their goal for this event is $150,000.00. The City of South Lake Tahoe issued a proclamation that 3-23-19 is officially “Pink Heavenly Day”. President Egry stated that Connor Henderson, Chris Henderson’s son, started a team that you can make a donation on behalf of. Officer & Chair Reports President: Vicki Egry reported on her experience at the CAHHS convention held last month. A large discussion point was the new law now in effect SB-1152, with regard to discharge planning for homeless patients. She is also busy with annual reports on what happened in 2018 in the Auxiliary. 1st Vice President: Lundholm asked Dr. Purvance if Barton hospital is in compliance with this new law affecting the homeless in our area. He stated that the hospital is familiar with the law and does take care of our homeless population. She reported that she is working on the new 2019 roster and hopes it will be out by the end of the month. The auxiliary information Brochure has been updated and is ready for print. She met with Lauren in Public Relations and updated the auxiliary website. Roster corrections will be sent to Larry to be included in the Barometer. 2nd Vice President: deVos reported that she sent out 22 Barton Certificates for the 4th quarter totaling $420.00. There are 9 prospective new members that she is tracking currently. We have 4 prospects for the junior volunteer program. Hours: Linda Coffman reported that she has the authority now to enter the time clock correction forms for the auxiliary. Hours report for 2018 will be in the Barometer. The master cumulative report should be done soon and will be emailed out.

When you swipe your badge on the Kronos machine make sure your name appears on the screen so your hours are recorded correctly. Luncheon: Linda Coffman will contact Primo’s to reserve the volunteer appreciation luncheon for April 8. Watch your Barometer for the flyer. Discussion ensued about ordering a giveaway item for the luncheon. Treasurer: Anton provided January and February treasurer reports. The auxiliary was reimbursed for the price of two luncheons last year by the hospital. Anton reported that our balance as of 2-28-19 is $227.008.74. This does not include the Dan Kerr Scholarship fund in the amount of $90,548.96. Barometer: Larry Coffman stated deadline for submissions for newsletter will be 3-17-19. Blood Drive: Larry Coffman reported that at the March 1st blood drive 75 donors came thru. 65 pints of blood were collected. No platelets were collected. Comfort Cart: Schussel reported that she is getting books on tape from the Attic for the cart.

3. Safety George Ramirez reported on his experience at the CAHHS convention. He felt the round table discussions were very helpful and enjoyed the speaker’s presentations. This was his first time attending and found it very worthwhile.

Sunshine: Louise Mitchell has sent all birthday cards out for the month. She does need birthday cards, so if you have any, please drop them off at the front desk. Publicity: Joanne Donmoyer has done a wonderful job with the Auxiliary bulletin board near the cafeteria. Scholarship: Vikki Egry reported that the scholarship committee will meet on 3-29-19 from 1-3:30pm in the board room to go over the scholarship program applicants.

Ways & Means: Egry reported that total fundraising for 2018 Pop-ups were $4,071.03. We made $513.13 from Care Wear Uniform sale on 1-15-19. Upcoming event dates are Collective Goods March 12-13, Care Wear Uniforms on April 30 and Just For You Handbags June 10-11. President Egry reported that there are 4 people up for renewal on the main hospital board: Mike Bradford, Dena Schwarte, Keith Swanson and Kirk Ledbetter. These four people are running unopposed so will automatically be on the board for another term. Next board meeting will be 4-9-19 starting at 9:00am with breakfast. ADJOURN: 11:45am, submitted by Linda Coffman, Recording Secretary _____________________________________________________________________________
