The Auckland Orienteer is the magazine of the Auckland Orienteering Association and incorporates articles from the Auckland Orienteering Club Inc., the North West Orienteering Club Inc., and the Counties-Manukau Orienteering Club. It is produced monthly and is available online from the NWOC homepage. Other orienteering related publications are welcome to draw material from the AO pages although credit is asked for both the author (when stated) and the AOA. Information for advertisers is available from the editor (details in Last Bits) Cover: Lesley Stone helps her grandson Scott Carswell compete the string course during the Anzac four-day event.

Editorial Hello again

Although a seemingly quiet month in orienteering compared with the last few, our clubs have still been very busy. Well done to the Auckland Club for their efforts with the Auckland Secondary Schools Championships. Apart from a few lost students all went well and SportIdent again proved itself very useful. Well done also to North West Club on the completion of another excellent Score Series. Congratulations of course to Robin Ambler, a very deserving winner of the mountain bike.

So, on on now to the OY series, the first of which will be hosted by Counties Manukau Club on July 6th at Duder's Beach Reserve.

This magazine is nowhere near as big as the last one - five pages for one event will have that effect on any magazine! Unfortunately, Shaun was unable to complete the regular Ask the Expert column also as no one had any problems this month with their orienteering! Remember to send in a leg you have had difficulty with by e-mail or snail mail. Shaun will gather up loads of advice from our many available experts and we can all benefit. (Send to 122 Victory Rd, Laingholm or [email protected])

Hope you enjoy your read! Madeleine Collins

Lisa's North West News Auckland orienteering event attracts over 500 entries! Yes, these figures are correct.... Mary Moen recently organised the North Shore / West Auckland Intermediate schools champs, assisted on the day by Bert Chapman, Di Michels, Peter Godfrey, Tom & Heather Clendon (AOC) and others. Terje Moen re-fieldworked the Long Bay map and over 500 students participated in teams of six. Nick Mead and Gene Beveridge both posted speedy times.

Sarah Gilkison (12yrs) competed in the Auckland secondary schools champs at Spaghetti Soup, Woodhill, placing 2nd against more senior competitors.

Birkenhead College plans to send 54 competitors to the national schools champs in Nelson in July, and the students benefited from a special coaching evening at the school last month. Many thanks to Madeleine Collins and her large team of tutors for a very informative session.

The elite super-series has now been completed and both Mark Lawson and Lisa Frith ran very consistently to finish in 5th and 7th places respectively. Mark will join Rob Garden and Marquita Gelderman on a European campaign next month, and will be very competitive in the veteran age grades. They plan to contest the Masters champs in Norway, the Swedish O-Ringen and the Scottish 6 days. Bert Chapman will be among those joining Lisa and Graham Frith's marathon

orienteering tour, featuring most of the major European events leading up to the world champs in Switzerland.

You can't escape orienteers.... We decided to take a break from orienteering and went tramping overnight in the Kaueranga Valley Forest Park, near Thames. We encountered Hilary and George Iles (CMOC) on the track, and shared the palatial Pinnacles hut with Jill and Al Smithies and Tom, Chris, Nick and Jeremy Frentz (recently of NWOC).

The score events continue to be popular and attract more than their fair share of fine weather. Many thanks to Campbell Melrose-Allen and Dave Melrose for the physically challenging event on Slater Road and Jill and Al Smithies for setting the Spaghetti Soup event, which saw the introduction of Sport Ident for these events.

Terrific turnout for the final score series event, held on yet another fine late autumn day. On our early recces to Woodhill, Penny Brothers and I discovered that "Beautiful Hills" badly needed a remap, with many of our potential control sites having disappeared under new mountain bike tracks or jungle-like growth of cutty grass. Fortunately a rapid fieldwork and remap by Andrew Bell, Mike Beveridge and Marquita Gelderman resulted in a new map by the Monday before the event! This was a physically demanding event for runners and we were pleased with the overall positive response to the day. Congratulations to Robin Ambler who, with wife Gay, is a generous sponsor of NorthWest, was a very deserving winner of the mountain bike prize draw.

Next club meeting: Wednesday 11 June at Jill Smithies home, 4b Fairbanks Pl, Glendene at 7.30pm.

Auckland Chatter Congratulations to Auckland club members on their success at the recent Auckland Secondary Schools Championships, Simon Jager 1st Junior Boys grade and Rose Murphy 3rd in the Junior Girls grade.

The SS Champs produced a first - a missing Intermediate student turned up courtesy of the Kumeu Police! A search was well underway when he was located, having

hitched a ride with a forestry truck on a road, far away from the competition area. Sport Ident proved very useful in tracking his route for the first couple of hours, and luckily the cell phone coverage in that part of the forest was good, assisting the searchers to stay in touch. There were many lessons to be learned from the incident for the future.

Birthday wishes to two Club members, David Stewart on turning 21, and our President Nicola Kinsett, whose age will not be published. Of course we will all know when she goes up a grade, or will she?

The Club extends our best wishes to Rob Jessop and Tim Renton, who are about to depart to represent New Zealand in international competition. We wish you every success, and we know you will carry the flag well.

The recent Wayne Cretney Memorial competition in the Wairarapa produced a tied win for Club member, Jeff Greenwood. He tied with none other than former Auckland Club member, Paul Dalton

Count ies Manukau Connect ion Our juniors have been very busy over the last month! Here's a brief recap of some of their highlights: The Auckland Secondary Schools champs were held late in May, and CM juniors were right up there with the best of them. Jayne Shuker and Martin Peat took the Senior Girls and Boys titles respectively, with Jenie Iles and Ciaran Murphy both posting great runs. Congratulations also to the entire Peat family -utter domination at all levels! Well done everybody.

Now on a not-strictly-orienteering front, special mention must be made about the Schools Sir Edmund Hilary Secondary Challenge held at OPC this year. Ten teams were selected from around the country to compete, one of these teams being from Waiuku College and containing orienteers Jayne Shuker and Jenie Iles. Amongst other

various tough mental and physical challenges (canoeing, climbing, mountain biking, first aid, ropes course etc..) their navigational skills came in handy! The Waiuku team came second by a narrow margin, miles ahead of the next team. Well done, girls!!!

Coming Events: Promotional Event at Boundary Rd, Waiuku, 15th June. Start times 10-11.30 am. Setter Natalie Rouse, Controller Ross Brighouse. OY 1 - Duders Reserve, 6th July. Start times 10 -11.30 am. Setter Tania Robinson, Controller Bryce Brighouse.

I will leave you with this thought for the month... You can't have a light without a dark to stick

it in. Arlo Guthrie

Try to find the 20 hidden words... good luck!

Hi, Welcome to Kidz Kontrol, I hope you are enjoying all of your orienteering, especially the score events (they are really good for your skills!) I had a lot of fun at the Auckland Secondary schools champs, and hopefully more of you will be there next time! Thanks to the Auckland Club who organised the great day.

It's great seeing so many kids at the score events. I reckon we should hold an Auckland junior camp, maybe at Shakespeare regional park, or Aharoa (the Kings School camp), or camping at Tawharanui...any other suggestions? Hawkes Bay seem to have had their very own junior camp, why not us Aucklanders? We need some training so we can clean up at the Nationals next year!!! (Not that we aren't good enough already!) Hope you enjoyed the score series, and the wordfind. Sarah

International O News Park World Tour hit by SARS 15 May The SARS epidemic has made it very difficult for the Asian Tour organiser, Nordic Sports China (formerly PWT International), to conclude negotiations with local hosts and partners, nor does the PWT Council wish to expose competitors to a potential health risk. Other sports events, such as the 2003 Women's Football World Cup and the 2003 Badminton World Championships, have been similarly affected.

The PWT Council is working hard to find a proper alternative solution for the 2003 series in Europe in the late autumn. If this proves too difficult in view of the short notice, it may be decided to carry over the 2003 PWT ranking points to the 2004 season which are already planned to kick off in February/March in southern Italy

News from Australia 27 May The Australian team for WOC 2003 in Switzerland has been named after the final selection trials, held near Adelaide last weekend. The team is:

Men: Grant Bluett, David Brickhill-Jones, Troy de Haas, Tom Quayle, David Shepherd, Rob Walter

Women: Jo Allison, Kathryn Ewels, Allison Jones, Natasha Key, Cassie Trewin

Nine of the team members were in Finland in 2001. David Brickhill-Jones will make his World Championship debut, while Cassie Trewin returns to the team after missing WOC 2001 through injury. Grant Bluett will be running in his sixth World Championship, equalling Warren Key's Australian record.

It has not yet been decided who will run in each event.

The team's best chances for a good result are probably in the men's sprint and men's relay. Australia was 6th in the men's relay in 2001 and hopes to do at least as well this time. In the sprint, the selectors face the difficult task of choosing between four world-class performers for the two places available; Troy de Haas and David Brickhill-Jones were both 4th in World Cup sprint events during the 2002 season (and were 5th and 6th in the 2003 Nordic Championships), Tom Quayle has a World Cup 7th, and Grant Bluett has many outstanding Park World Tour performances in recent years.

Emit testing new punching system 15 May Emit has recently produced a new punching system to rival that of Sportident It is a punching system where punching is not necessary. It means that the runner must only come close enough to the control point.

The system will be used on 27th of June in

Sálen Sprint event. The course planner of the event, Jimmy Birklin (sprint world champion) says: "It's interesting to try new things that could improve orienteering. We shouldn't be satisfied with what we have, but should always look further"

Superseries

Rob Jessop (Auckland) and Rachel Smith (Christchurch) won the Orienteering Superseries at the weekend, Smith for the second time in a row. The final two events were held on Saturday and Sunday in the Wairarapa.

Jessop extended his two-point lead over world-class Dane Carsten Jorgensen to underline his return to form after several years out of top ranks. Although the two races were won by Wellington's Stu Barr (who missed several events due to sickness) and NZ's other top male Jason Markham (Christchurch), Jessop's 2nd and 4th placings kept him on top. The 35-year-old will lead a promising NZ team to the World Championship in Switzerland in August.

Smith displayed the consistency that has seen her close to the top of NZ women since her senior debut in 1997, winning both races at the weekend. After winning the first two series events she didn't have it all her own way, conceding placings during the middle five events to Dunedin's Penny Kane (series runner-up) and Tania Robinson (Auckland, third). Smith will also compete at the World Championship.

Extremely close competition for the third mens slot was not completely resolved, as

Markham and rising star Chris Forne (also Christchurch) gained equal points, with the other contender, Helensville's Mark Lawson, five points adrift.

A similar battle for fourth woman was won by Jenni Adams (Christchurch), with Magdalena Danielsson (a Swede studying in Wellington) and Lara Prince (Christchurch) tied three points behind. Danielsson, Adams and Kane finished Sunday's race 8 seconds apart after two hours racing!

In the teams competition, the first time it has been held, Southerly Storm extended its lead over Northern Knights to win by 95 points. Storm established an early lead in the first round in Canterbury, and were able to withstand the Knights in the second round in Kights' terrain near Auckland, before moving further ahead in the Wairarapa. The "home team" for this final round Central Raiders was a distant third, and must look to the expected transfers of Markham and Smith next season and emerging younger talent for hope of advancement.

The final round consisted of a sprint-distance race in Masterton's Queen Elizabeth Park won by Smith and Barr in 18 and 15 minutes respectively; and a longdistance race in rugged hill country near Mount Bruce won by Smith and Markham in 1hr59min and 2hr21min.

ANZ Test Match Australia Wins First Test Match Wednesday, 28 May 2003

The inaugural Trans Tasman Orienteering Test Match was won by Australia, 120 points to 70. The test was held over the weekend, 24 and 25 May near Adelaide, South Australia.

On Day 1, Saturday 24, at Tanuda the New Zealanders found it difficult to come to grips with the map which was a detailed granite area with pine and native scrub, and very different to the pine covered sand dunes they competed on during the Easter Anzac Orienteering Carnival in Woodhill Forest, Auckland.

On the Women's 4.3km course Tania Robinson (Counties Manukau) managed 3rd place in 37:28, just over one minute behind Alison Jones, and 33 seconds behind Natasha Key. 5th place went to Rachel Smith (PAPO) in 38:43, 9. Penny Kane (Dunedin) 42:38, 10. Lisa Frith (PAPO) 43:35, 11. Claire Paterson (Manawatu) 44:03, 12. Lara Prince (PAPO) 46:23.

Australian Rob Walter, who has a world ranking of 77th, won the Men's 6.5 km course in 38 minutes 55 seconds. The next 3 places also went to Australians. First New Zealander was Jason Markham, PAPO, Canterbury, in 5th place with a time of 42:13. Other NZ men's results were: 6th Jamie

Stewart 42:55, 7 Alistair Cory-Wright 44:32, 8 Chris Forne 45:27 (all PAPO), 9 Rob Jessop (Auckland) 45:50, 12 J Bradshaw (Wellington) 49:21.

Day 2 on Sunday 25 at Adelaide Hills, an intricate spur/gully and pine forested area with some rock and goldmining, saw the New Zealanders starting to adjust to the terrain. Markham came second, just over one minute behind Australian Reuben Smith who took 82:54 on the 13.5 km course. Forne came 5th in 88:34, Jessop 7th in 89:42, Bradshaw 10th 96:21 and Stewart 11th in 106:09. Cory-Wright miss-punched at a control so was out of the competition.

The Women's 10 km course was won by Key in 72:52, with Jones 2nd in 75:56. Rachel Smith moved up to 3rd in 76:23, and Robinson 4th in 77:24. Other New Zealand places were: 6. Kane 80:25, 10. Prince 84:27, 11. Paterson 92:03, 12. Frith 93:27.

There will be some fine tuning of the points allocation system before the next test match, which will probably be held in New Zealand in 2004. It may need to better reflect each athlete's performance time-wise, relative to others' performances, rather than just the placing achieved.

School Sport Australia has invited a New Zealand Schools team to compete in the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships in September. And the NZOF has accepted the invitation.

(The championships are part of a spring carnival that includes the Australian Champs, the Oceania Champs and the Aus-NZ Challenge, and other social and educational happenings. So there's lots of reason s to go.)

The actual schools events, to be held in Victoria near Bendigo, are: • "Tuesday 30th September

- Australian Schools Orienteering Championships Individual - map = Wattle Gully North 1:10,000 spur/gully and goldmining

The New Zealand Schools team will be an official representative national team and therefore will be selected by an NZOF selection panel. The team will be named after the

SILVA New Zealand Secondary School Championships at Nelson on 18 & 19 July. Be there.

NZOF is also calling for those interested in managing the team to step forward and be part of this exciting development.

Australia Schools Tour Manager Applications are invited for the position of Manager of the New Zealand Schools tour to Australia in September. The manager, who will be required to travel with the team, will be responsible for coordinating entries, uniforms, travel, accommodation and other logistical details for the team. Secondary school teacher preferred but not essential. Direct expenses will be reimbursed within the budget. Applications close 21 June.

Applications and enquiries to: Stuart Payne, NZOF General Manager, 171A Fifield Tce, Christchurch 8002; Ph. 03 337 2275; Email: [email protected]

Rogaine News The Multisport Bikes Piha Rogaine race report - 27th July 2002

By Shaun Collins

It was a fine sunny day on the morning of the election and all around people awoke. Bugger the elections they thought, as they looked out the window and saw the sun shining down - I'm off to the Piha Rogaine

And so it began - people started to turn up to one of the first rogaine events in the Auckland region, based at the North Piha Surf Lifesaving club.

Hold on! Lets take a step back - what the hell is a rogaine? Rogaine is the sport of long distance cross country navigation in which teams of 2-5 members visit as many checkpoints as possible within a given time limit, usually 24 hours! Teams travel entirely on foot, navigating by map and compass. Checkpoints may be visited in any order, with checkpoints being allocated differing points. The highest score wins. Teams may return to the event centre as many times as they like (in the 24 hour events the event centre has a big cook up for people to come back to) and people do not have to stay out for the entire time allowed. Penalty points are deducted from a teams overall score for a late return.

The idea for having one of these events in the Auckland region was dreamed up by Phil Wood and myself and Piha was the spot that we both thought would be ideal for such an event. The event was targeted to be an entry-level event - so none of that 24-hour stuff - we decided to have the option of either a 3-hour or a 6-hour event.

We were stoked with the turnout of around 180 people which worked out to be 80 odd teams. The best thing was the diversity of the competitors - there were people from multisport clubs, rangers, orienteering clubs, alpine clubs, trampers, adventure racers (fine tuning the navigation skills before the Arrow 24 hour race in Auckland) and even some professional (or experienced anyway!) rogainers from England who had just flown into NZ the day before for the start of their holiday. There was a huge mix in ages and ability too with a couple of young uns (9 months) going in the backpack and lots of novice navigators who looked very nervous at the start.

The 6-hour event was first up with a start at 10am. Maps were handed out at 9am to allow time for planning. The more experienced people used this time to the maximum to ensure they had planned the optimum route. As the hooter sounded, in a mass chaos, people took off in different directions. We tried to place the checkpoints in some of the nicest spots in the area - encouraging people to check out some of the awesome vantage points for admiring the views. Checkpoints were on track junctions or prominent trees and there was no bush bashing necessary as all routes were on established walking tracks. Feedback from competitors was that this was a great area to be on a sunny day!

The 3-hour event started, after their planning time at 1pm. Then for us it was a waiting game - well not really as we had to cook up a feed for the 180 people.

3 o'clock ticked over and no sign of people. 15 minutes later and a team came back to check out the time, looked at the race clock and decided to head out and try for some of the closer ones they didn't have yet. 15 minutes later and a couple of teams started to come in looking tired and muddy. They didn't think they had time to get anymore so headed for the hot showers early. Five minutes to 4pm and probably half of the people were in...tick ...tick....tick people trickled in. The gates to the courtyard in front of the clubrooms were shut at the countdown from the people who had already finished. Bang on four the gates shut. Yet still people came in collecting their 20 penalty points for each minute they were late.

The grub was served and the courtyard was a buzz with the constant questions of "where did you go?", which way did you get these ones?". The great thing about this type of event is the amount of post race analysis that you can do with everyone else - comparing routes. Great for socializing.

Maybe you're keen to have a go - the NEXT EVENT is on 28th June 2003 starting again at the North Piha Surf Club. See our website (www.lacticturkey.co.nz) or contact Shaun on 8177621 for entry forms and more details.

Cheers and see you there.
