COVID-19 RECOVERY: As a member of the IOT Regional Development Organisation (RDO), I was able to attend a teleconference with Nola Marino, Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories and members of Regional Development Associations around Australia to discuss economic recovery in the regions. While we share many of the same challenges as the other regions, it was pleasing to note that the Minister is acutely aware of our unique situation and the effort the Minister, our Administrator, Natasha Griggs and the Australian Government is putting into recovery and economic stimulus is very much appreciated. We look forward to working with the Australian Government as their on-ground enabling partner as we enter this critical recovery phase. HOME ISLAND RETAIL CENTRE - restumping: A local contractor has been successful in winning the bid to restump the Home Island Retail Centre as the first step in the refurbishment of this important community asset. TEAM BUILDING AND RUBBISH PICK UP The Office crew did a two hour team building morning last week. The team did a walk around Home Island to pick up any maintenance issues for the budget and have captured lots of maintenance requirements such as repairs to the brick paving, curbing, painting and other maintenance to public buildings. While we were at it, we also did a rubbish pick up. In less than two hours we filled 11 bags with rubbish. The main problems appear to be cigarette butts, soft drink cans, lolly wrappers and plastic drink bottles. We were disappointed that despite our best efforts to keep our community clean and tidy, there is so much litter around. Please, assist us to keep our islands clean and beautiful and put your rubbish in a bin. TIM BUILDING DAN ANGKAT SAMPAH Pekerja opis melakukan tim building selama dua jam minggu lalu.

Defence Plans New Facility at the Island’s Airfield

The Department of Defence has held discussions with the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Administrator Natasha Griggs as

well as the then Shire President, Seriwati Iku and CEO Andrea Selvey, about the construction of a new RAAF

    facility at the airfield.

The 2016 Defence White Paper highlighted that “to ensure our forces can continue to operate effectively and safely

in our region and globally, they need a comprehensive understanding, or situational awareness, of what is

happening around them”. To provide this situational awareness, Defence is acquiring a number of new aircraft

including the MC-55A Peregrine (image provided – credit ‘Concept Art from L3 Harris’).

As part of the acquisition a new building at the airfield is proposed to provide the Peregrine crews support for

operational planning and communications. The proposed work is planned to be completed in 2023 using a

combination of mainland and local businesses. The building will be approximately 80m2 in size and will feature solar

panels with battery storage as well as a rainwater tank for non-drinking water use.

The project is currently before the Joint Standing Committee on Public Works. Any one wanting more information can do so at the PWC website at https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/Joint/Public_Works. Submissions can be made to the PWC up to 28 July 2020. Additionally individuals can contact Defence’s Project Team via [email protected] with comments or questions.

Defence memperoleh sejumlah kapal terbang baru termasuk MC-55A Peregrine (gambar disediakan - kredit

Committees/Joint/Public_Works. Penyerahan boleh dibuat ke PWC hingga 28 Julai 2020. Selain itu individu boleh
