CHALLENGES FOR THE APPLICATION OFPULSED POWER IN THE INDUSTRY - THEFOOD SECTOR EXAMPLE

Nowadays Pulsed Power is making its way through commercial applications, in traditional sectors such as material engineering, environment and the food industry but also in new areas such as health and microbiology. Almost every week a new application of Pulsed Power can be found in specialized scientific journals and new Pulsed Power equipment is installed in a factory.

From its roots, in military and large physics applications, with megawatt hard-tube single pulse systems, to the recent kilowatt semiconductor based efficient repetitive pulse systems, Pulsed Power has been both an image and also a key-drive of technological progress. Whilst the goal has always been the same, enhancing a product or a process and most of the time with energy efficiency.

The PEF “must haves ” and the renting optionHowever the route is still very demanding as industry sets high requirements on

Pulsed Power systems, the most common being: electrical efficiency, reliability, low cost, reduced size, portability and on top of these the equipment must comply with the safety and electromagnetic compatibility regulations. In addition, as is the case of the food industry, further difficulties arise from two specific aspects: i) first it is a highly-regulated sector and; ii) it is very complex to identify improvements in industrial environments. In addition, some times the processed materials are not available all the year round, as in seasonal materials such as grapes and olives, where the available period to process can be just a few weeks, which can make renting, instead of selling, a good option.

Show that it works Then, the need for careful design of tests is crucial; in order to introduce the Pulsed

Power systems in the correct industrial step to achieve the wanted result. For the food sector, normally pulsed electric fields are used, so a treatment chamber, or transducer that converts the voltage pulses to pulse electric field applied to food in-line with the existing processes is needed.

One possible solution is that in order to mitigate some of the industrial hurdles for the food sector and at the same time have the opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of the technology to a specialized audience, is to integrate the Pulsed Power system in an available Pilot Plant that simulates the industrial process but where most of the steps of the process can be better controlled, producing also more precise diagnostics.

In conclusion, the mission of transferring this technology to the industry needs resilience and a good understanding of the industrial process, also because although everyone is always looking for a Wow effect, most of the times a 5% yield increase or energy reduction can make an industrial happy, but you need to prove it.

Marcos D. N. Teotónio Pereira received the Dipl. Ing. degree in physics from the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL), Portugal, in 1989, the M.Sc. degree in atomic and molecular physics from the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL), Portugal in 1994, and the Doctor degree in atomic physics (high energy pulsed laser interactions with atoms) in 2002, from Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal.

LUÍS REDONDO is Professor at ISEL, teaching Power Electronics and Digital Systems, where he coordinates the Pulsed Power Advanced Applications Group, GIAAPP. His research interests include development of solid-state pulsed power topologies for industr ial applications. From 2011 he is the R&D manager of EnergyPulse Systems that develops, manufactures and sells Pulsed Power generators for adding value in var ious industr ia l applications.

The SIAME laboratory of the University of Pau is divided in two teams. The High Voltage Processes team is led by Professor L. Pecastaing. It is one of the few French university teams working in the field of high voltage and the only one in the field of High Pulsed Power (HPP). This team includes 12 teacher-researchers, 1 research engineer and 9 PhD students currently enrolled. The main topics currently being developed at SIAME are related mainly to the generation and metrology of high voltage and / or current pulses. Our main applications are flash radiography, pulse electroporation, high-power microwave sources, rock fracturing, and especially high-power lasers.

The SIAME laboratory has developed different types of high voltage transient sources (Marx generators, Blumlein, pulse resonant transformers, transmission line transformers) which have complementary characteristics. Also a 100 kJ energy bank is dedicated for dynamic pressure wave generation in fluids. These different sources have been developed, most of the time, under industrial contracts (DGA, CEA, Total, ITHPP, ABB, ISL, Effitech...).

In the framework of studies conducted by the CEA in the domain of HPP systems for Defense applications, the SIAME was identified 10 years ago as a unique French university partner in this field. The level of training and specificity in HPP provide the SIAME laboratory as a unique place in terms of building pools of young people with real expertise in this area. In 2017 a common laboratory between SIAME and the CEA has been created: the SAGE laboratory. It brings together about 30 researchers working in the field of HPP. His research interests are related to the development of high pulsed power systems (devices involving very high power, compact, reliable and sometimes autonomous).

The SIAME thus has a capacity of expertise and a unique know-how at the French university level in the field of fast high voltage pulse generators, whether in their design, implementation or test.
