SPORTS REPORTS Hockey 1ST XI HOCKEY Having lost only two members from last year’s 1st XI, we had a strong and well developed team to tackle the season with eight members from Upper 6 and having the advantage of playing together for many seasons. As well as retaining our two Lower 6 players, Lizzie Sherwin and Harriet Newhouse, we had several much appreciated younger additions to the team from Upper 5 including Katelyn Aitchison, Moya Smith, Sarah Moore and of course Margaret Young who took on the crucial role of goalkeeper once again. The season started with some evidence of an unavoidable lack of fitness after a long summer break but the team soon began to become accustomed once again to the game now having to adjust to a much faster pace due to several new hockey rules which allow a much faster game. Once in our attacking third, it was the job of the forwards to get some results in the D and Hannah Davies, Alicia Harvey, Lizzie Sherwin and Sarah Moore stepped up to the challenge making leads and many opportunities from which to score. Although at times the team found it infuriatingly difficult to get the ball into the goal, we usually came out with a win. This was evident from the results from our first set of matches: we beat Portsmouth Grammar 6-2, Reed’s School 8-2 and Churcher’s College 4-0. The younger players proved their potential by providing some excellent performances from the start. Sarah Moore, the newest addition to the forward line, offered both speed and enthusiasm and Moya Smith showed an impressive amount of improvement as her skills developed rapidly, becoming an extremely versatile player. After recovering from an injury, Katelyn Aitchison played in her first match in November against Ardingly and adjusted brilliantly to a new defensive position aiding in victory against the opposition 6-0. The defence were undeniably a reliable and solid unit headed up by Margaret Young who has made some extraordinary saves throughout the season; most notably perhaps in the Under 18 Surrey Indoor Tournament in December in which her presence was, somewhat regrettably, invaluable. The team has been proud to say that Margaret has played in matches without having touched the ball first, but the whole team appreciated her consistently reliable attendance and play. Jennie Williams, Millie Chapman, Hannah Walker and Harriet Newhouse made up the rest of the defence and formed a highly skilled and intelligent unit communicating efficiently and positively to the rest of the team and remaining calm and composed when under pressure. A notable performance was against King Edward’s School in which the team had all midfield players missing and many others out of position. The defence remained a solid barrier against King Edward’s attack and we succeeded, winning 7-1. The season continued with many more highlights. An 11-1 victory against Brighton College brought an outstanding performance from all players who displayed high intensity and energy throughout the game and scored frequent and entertaining goals for the spectators. The last match of the Autumn Term ended with an extremely exciting and hard fought draw against rivals Epsom College 2-2. An enormous effort was presented all round and the team was satisfied with its performance in spite of the level result. As well as the many victories and celebrations there have also been some times of disappointment, the most memorable being our performance in the Under 18 Surrey County Tournament. The last match of the season was a memorable one. A 12-0 win over Prior’s Field ending in a penalty corner from which we scored was an emotional and ideal way to end what was a fantastic season and, for the Upper 6, a perfect way to end their hockey career at Freemen’s. On behalf of the entire team I would like to thank Miss Ridley for organising matches and providing constant support and guidance. In addition, a mention must go to the families and friends of the players who came to watch us for their endless support and encouragement on the sidelines. In particular I would like to thank our coach Mr Martin Durban. Not only did he provide a steady supply of Jelly Babies for all our matches, he also imparted precious words of wisdom upon us regularly and with enormous enthusiasm and dedication. The team had another good season, reflecting our ability to work well as ateam so that play flowed and as a resultthe score ended in our favour. Despitebeing the 2Bs we were often playingbetter sides from opposing schools, meaning that we had a harder job witha tougher side to beat. We hadoutstanding victories against Reedsand St Theresa’s, but whether we wonor lost our team spirit has been

amazing and we have developed wellas a squad. It will be sad not to trainwith the 2Bs next year. I would like tothank the whole team for theirdedication and commitment this year.

Claire McCarthy

It has been a memorable season witha lot of fun and laughter. It began withan unsuccessful trip to Portsmouth, but wasquickly followed by a great 4-1 win atAlleyn’s. Our success continued with an 8-0 win against Churcher’s College, and a 3-1 win against Cranbrook. We also manageda 3-1 win against Reigate Grammar, and a5-1 win against St Teresa’s. Due to thesnow, many of our games were cancelled, but we didn’t lose focus and enjoyed aChristmas dinner together. Although ourseason was full of great wins, we did havesome unlucky losses such as againstEpsom College and against St Bede’swhere we travelled on a four hour roundtrip, got stuck in traffic and got completelydrenched playing in the freezing cold! Ourspirits were never dampened thoughthanks to the enthusiasm of Mrs Shaillsinging Christmas songs with us! We alsoexperienced unlucky losses to Tormead, StGeorge’s and Kingston Grammar.

The team started as 14 individuals, andended as a united team. Everyone playedreally hard all year, and should be veryproud of their efforts. We may not havebeen the most successful team, buteveryone can be commended for never

giving up and having a memorable seasonof laughter and excitement. All of our highspirits, successes and fun have to be downto Mrs Shaill, who never gave up on us,always bought us Jelly Babies for coachjourneys and gave 100% commitment to us

whatever. We would all like to thank herfor the effort she put in to give us such amemorable season.

U18 AND U16 SURREY PLATECOMPETITION WINNERS

Both the U18s and U16s won their respectiveplate competitions at Surbiton HockeyClub in December. After disappointingresults for both teams in the preliminaryrounds of the Surrey Hockey Tournamentswhich meant they did not progress tofinals day they were out to provethemselves.

The U18s quickly dealt with Tormead in theirsemi-final, eventually winning 7-0. The

final was against Reigate Grammar Schoolwho had played their semi final prior tofinals day and were keen to make theirmark in the competition. However a strongFreemen’s side had other ideas and withexcellent constructive play and swiftpassing throughout the whole team,Freemen’s ran out 7-1 winners meaning theU18s were crowned ‘Surrey Plate Winners’.

The U16s played Winston Churchill in theirsemi–final and we played very decisively, winning the game 11-0. After a quickchange of venue we faced Prior’s Field inthe final.

We started well and with some swiftaccurate passing quickly converted ourchances. Prior’s Field applied somepressure to our defence but it was quicklydealt with. The final score was 6-0 and theU16s were crowned ‘Surrey Plate Winners’.

It was a new experience for CLFS toplay in the South Round of theNational Indoor Championships forGirls and the girls played with greatenthusiasm and tenacity. Theycontinued to play good indoor hockeythroughout the day and were unluckywith some of their results, with goalsbeing scored against them in the finalstages of some matches. The girls werea credit to the school and finished in acredible position. They gained valuableexperience competing in this high levelcompetition and it will stand them ingood stead for the indoor hockeycompetitions next year.

The team has had a mixed seasonwith some high scoring games, some exciting draws and somedisappointing losses, but everyonehas had their opportunity to shine.

The year began with disappointinglosses to Hierstpierpoint 0-2 andSevenoaks 0-1. This made us moredetermined to win our next match, which was our highest scoring match ofthe season against Churchers College, winning 5-0. Despite a few games beingcancelled due to the bad weather wewon three other matches in the season, including beating Christ’s Hospital 1-0,Ardingly 5-1 and Sutton Valence 3-1.

Another memorable achievement wasagainst St George’s, a very strongopposition, and despite an excellentperformance from Rachel Mengham asgoalie, a last minute goal in the topcorner lead to a 1-0 loss. However, theteam was very happy that it was only 1-0! At St Teresa’s we found ourselves 4-0down at half time although after a toughsecond half we managed to come back andscore three goals before an unexpectedaccident meant that the match had to becancelled before the end, resulting in adisappointing loss for us.

A big thank you goes to Miss Higginsfor coaching us and to all the otherteachers who helped referee andtransport us to the matches throughoutthe season.

U15A HOCKEY

We have had a successful season, winningthe majority of our matches due to ourenthusiasm, fitness and ability to worktogether as a team. It was a shaky start, with a draw against Hurstpierpoint 0-0 andtwo losses against Sevenoaks andPortsmouth Grammar. However wequickly got back on our feet and gained acomfortable win over Manor House in anA/B team match, winning 8-0.

We often felt during matches that the gamedidn’t reflect the score as was the case withour next two matches against St George’s(a team we know are a strong opposition)and Christ’s Hospital. Despite losing both,St George’s 3-1 and Christ’s Hospital 2-1,we played skilfully and kept possession, unfortunately unable to make the most ofour chances. However all of our fitnesstraining and shooting practice paid off aswe won our next six matches convincingly. In particular winning 6-0 against St Teresa’sand 4-1 against Reigate Grammar.

The next matches had mixed results as webegan the Spring Term, beating BrightonCollege 2-1 in freezing conditions butunfortunately coming up against sometough opposition too, including Ardinglywho we lost narrowly 1-0 to, and KingstonGrammar, who we narrowly lost to 2-0.

However the sudden snow meant our twonext matches were cancelled but also gaveus time to get fired up for our rematchagainst Kingston Grammar. It was a tenseaffair with some superb saves by our goalieIsabelle Johnston, a consistently reliablemember of our team. We held our nerveand won the match 2-0. Our winning streakcontinued with some very comfortable

victories over Burgess Hill, Harrodian(winning 12-0) and finally against PriorsField which we won 10-0.

Our thanks go to our brilliant coach MissHiggins who kept us positive and droveus to some of the furthest hockey groundswe have ever known. We’d also like tothank Mr Martin Durban, our fitnesscoach, who continued to push our fitnessto new levels despite sometimes gettinglittle thanks for it at the time. Finally Ipersonally want to thank my team mateswho always played to the best of theirability, carried on fighting even in thetoughest of games, and made matches soenjoyable. I wish everyone luck in the future. It has been a pleasure to play with you all.

We had a good year performing well andsecuring some well deserved victories. Theseason opened with playing againstHurstpierpoint College which we won (3-0). We were unfortunate in meeting StGeorge’s so early in the season and we sadlylost. However we were inspired to do betterwinning our next match. We participated inthe Surrey Hockey tournament and gotinto the finals, unfortunately losing andcoming fourth in Surrey–still an impressiveplacing as we came behind St George’s andKingston Grammar school, both nationalfinalists. As the season progressed ourlevel of hockey improved, with new stickskills and Miss Ridley’s encouragement.

This resulted in us winning tour last matchagainst Harrodian 12-1. Two memorable

matches were against Godolphin &Latymer (6-0), when the team weresurprised to find tree roots growing underthe pitch which made it a much moreinteresting game, and Brighton College

(5-1) where it wouldn’t stop raining so thedefence created a very unique hockey slidetackle as they jabbed on the slippery surface.

The Under 14s celebrated success as theycame fourth in Surrey. On 13th October, they stormed into the finals day of theSurrey Hockey Tournament by winningtheir pool games against Epsom 1-0 afterdominating the game; JAGS 1-0 afterplaying well as a unit and taking one of afew chances that came their way; andOxsted School 6-0 after again dominatingthe game and working well as a team.

Going through to the quarter finals asgroup winners, the team went on to beatAlleyn’s School 2-0. The team wasconfident and determined to win. Thegirls settled into their own style of playmanipulating our strong right side. Thedefence improved enormouslythroughout the tournament and enabledthe team to retain possession and createeffective phases of attack.

The finals day on Wednesday 18thNovember at Surbiton Hockey Club was

a round robin affair and the girlsunfortunately lost to Kingston Grammar 0-4, Sir Williams Perkins 0-1, and StGeorge’s 1-2. We had no medals to show, but came away with the title of the fourthbest Under 14 team in Surrey. The girlsplayed fantastically well, and on another day,we could have finished higher, but Icongratulate the whole team on a greatachievement.

The Bs have had a very mixed yet excitingseason. Unfortunately we started off losingin the tri-tournament to bothHurstpierpoint College and SevenoaksSchool. This dampened our spirits for thenext game against St George's School, oneof the best sports schools in Surrey –however we played excellently, beatingthem 5-0. Our winning streak continuedagainst Christ's Hospital when we beatthem 3-2. We then drew against Churcher’sCollege 0-0, but then regained our strengthto beat Cranbrook School 2-0, and thenArdingly College 5-3. Sadly, we lost toManor House 0-2, but then beat SuttonValence School 7-0, our most successfulmatch of the season. However, we againlost to St Teresa’s 0-3.

After Christmas, we beat Reigate Grammar4-0 but then drew against the HarrodianSchool in the last match of the season. Wewould like to say a special thanks to ourexcellent coach Mrs Whiteley. We may not

have had the most amazing season but we sure had a lot of fun and we are all lookingforward to next year.

During the season, the A and B teamsplayed a mix of seven and 11 aside. Bothteams had a great season, which we allenjoyed.

We had some great players and somestunning performances. At the back, Julia,Jasmine and Celia really shone, providinga solid defence. In the midfield, Miriamplayed excellently as centre during thesecond part of the season. Rosie, varying

between right wing, right midfield andcentre midfield was also a strong player.Olivia Sabin and Ellie Sloper had somebrilliant runs down the wing, along withsome fantastic goals. Katharine and Emma-Louise also contributed to the massivenumber of goals that we scored during theseason. Eleanor Wilson played excellentlyas our goalie. In our 11 aside team, RachelDunne and Izzy Forsyth helped greatly inmidfield and defence.

The As played exceptionably well in allour matches, and some of the bestincluded our match against CranleighPrep where we won 7-0, whilst we scoredthe same against Woldingham later on inthe season. We had an action-packed gameagainst Manor House which we won 6-3.The As played in three tournaments, andin the U13 Surrey Mini HockeyTournament Finals, we won round one butunluckily lost in round two.

The Bs also had some superb games, winning with a remarkable score of 10-0against Manor House, and a brilliant game

versus Feltonfleet ended in an 8-0 win. They played excellently against Downsendand Sutton Valence, winning with greatresults of 5-1 and 7-1. An intense and closegame against St George’s ended in a drawof 0-0.

FromDecember onwards we only lost twomatches–one against Burgess Hill when wefielded a mainly B squad and againstBeachborough who played an U13 teamagainst us. The As have benefitted this yearfrom a strong B team that have alwaysbeen pushing towards places in the Asquad. Well done to all the girls thatattended the training session each weekwith Mr Durban and then used these skillswithin the matches at the weekends.

The B squad saw movement of players ona weekly basis with C team players

Their seasoncontinued with a noticeable win against StGeorge’s which was a battle from end toend. Their best result came just after all thesnow. Maybe our snow-balling fitnessskills helped our aim on target because atFeltonfleet the Bs scored a phenomenal 11-0 victory and then scored a further fivegoals to win against Tormead three dayslater. They ended the season with quite afew goals into the aforementioned water-polo nets winning 7-0. Again, well done toall those who trained hard together andplayed with such spirit in the matches.

Itwas a good start to their Freemen’s hockeycareers and should stand them in good steadfor next year.

The girls made huge strides throughout theseason. Attendance at practice was rathershaky at the beginning of the year, but aftersome friendly encouragement from MissRidley the numbers started to rise. Fromthat point on the commitment wasoutstanding, with over 90% of the yeargroup attending on a regular basis.

The first fixture against St George’s was abaptism of fire and proved to be a valuableand steep learning curve, but an enjoyableone, as the As lost 0-3 and the B team 0-4.Sadly our long awaited fixture againstHoebridge was cancelled. In the SpringTerm the girls faced Feltonfleet andSutton High, and their hard work andfantastic attitude paid off. The As had aclosely fought game against Feltonfleetwinning 4-3. The girls moved the ballaround with increased accuracy andpositioned themselves accordingly.Defensively they got back behind the ballto prevent strong Feltonfleet attacks. The Bshad a somewhat easier task, winning 5-0,the determination of the attack paying off. These wins gave the girls the confidenceboost they needed, and in training had arenewed enthusiasm to improve. The finalgame against Sutton High Juniors was agreat reflection of how far the girls have

developed over the season. The As won 6-1 and the Bs won 5-1.

The girls were a delight to coach, andfantastic fun. There is some real potentialacross the year group, and if theirenthusiasm, team spirit and tenacitycontinue over the coming years they willbecome a force to be reckoned with.

Rugby1ST XV RUGBY

As we began our preparation for theseason, the challenges facing us weremore than evident. Primarily the factthat this season would not end inMarch, as is traditional, but continuethrough to mid-August, with theexciting prospect of the tour to NewZealand awaiting us.

This meant that on and off the pitch, thesquad would have to take measures to lookout for each other. From the first trainingsession, the determination and commitmentwas obvious. We relished the opportunityto begin our season with a trial gameagainst ‘that school from Cobham’.

The team against Cobham represented a newera of Freemen’s rugby, comprising sixplayers from last year’s 1st XV, and the restcoming up through either the 2nd XV or theU16XV. As it was a trial game, it consisted ofthree 20 minute periods. The first was a hardfought physical battle and considering theadvantage Cobham had in size, 0-0 was arespectable score, and the amount of skilland fitness within the squad became evident. Our second period however was not sosuccessful, as two of our key players, vice-captain and fly–half Jamie Ray and humanwrecking ball/tight head prop Ollie Mays, picked up injuries which would rule themout for a few weeks. Again, the rugby wastough and abrasive and we were unluckyto come out of the second period 5-0 down.In the third period, the fact that ouropposition had only recently returned froma tour became apparent, as we conceded 19points without managing to notch any upourselves, leaving the final result at 24-0,which greatly flattered our opponents.Despite the loss, the rugby and thecommitment displayed were more thanencouraging and there were manypositives to take from the game.

Our next fixture was another trial game, away to St John’s College in Southsea. As

we were still experimenting with differentplayers in different positions, a final resultof a 15-6 loss was also far from discouraging, albeit disappointing as we had possessionand territory which we were unable toconvert into points. Joe Hutter’s pinpointaccuracy with the boot became evidentduring this game, an aspect the teamwould benefit from in games to come.

With the trial games finished and positionsdecided, we were eager to claim our firstvictory. Training intensity was increased, exemplified beautifully by Dinos, whoturned up to one of our training sessions inthe pouring rain, wearing only shorts andt-shirt, and wielding a large baseball bat.Despite their obvious confusion, the centrepairing of Henry Swindell (who never takeshis mouthguard out, even to brush his teeth)and Ed Hodgson (forced through lack ofmemory to guess most of the backlinemoves) managed to refrain from doinganything too silly during this session, anachievement the entire team appreciated.

We entered the match against Emanuelbrimming with confidence. The training paidoff as we applied pressure from the firstminute, and this never really showed anysign of relenting. A brilliantly workedforwards try scored by the tame(ish)caveman-like presence of blindside flankerMotez Touqmatchi combined with threepenalty kicks and a conversion from thenever–faulting Joe Hutter gave us the victorywe had all, coaches and players alike, workedextremely hard for, and even though 16-7was not representative of the pressure wehad enjoyed, our confidence received amassive boost.

Our next game was against Seaford College,a side no-one in the team had everencountered before. It became obvious thatFreemen’s were by far the moreaccomplished side, and we were given achance to showcase our vast skill base. Ourquiet yet interestingly insightful pace man, winger Michael Rees, got his season off themark with a hat–trick of blistering tries.Motez also managed to score, as he wasmost probably lurking in the back line, fantasising about the prospect of becoming acentre, as did Hutter, Hodgson, Seb Cox,new boy Patrick Anderson, and captain AlexWright. Hutter capped the day with fiveconversion kicks, and we came away witha convincing 55-14 victory.

Sutton Valence were our next scalps, as weplayed them on an incredibly sunnySaturday in Ashtead Park. (I can confirm, having played on the 1st XV pitch for twoyears, that Mr Deighton is spot on when hedescribes the pitch as the best in England,

second only to Twickenham). Sutton Valenceconstantly field extremely competitive sides, and this was no exception. However, thecommitment displayed by the boys wasoutstanding, as we came away with acomfortable 28-17 victory, with tries fromthe returning Jamie Ray and Peter Hyams.Wright managed to get on the end of acouple, one after a fantastic run from Ray,which the captain was more than happy tosaunter in under the posts.

The following Saturday, we were faced withthe challenge of Reading Bluecoat, apredictably unpredictable side. We battledhard in a close-fought encounter. Despitetries from Hutter, Cox and Hyams we wereunable to gain the advantage and lost 36-26, in a high scoring game which couldhave gone either way.

Caterham have undoubtedly been one of themost consistently strong sides on the fixturelist. Always boasting a proportion of countyplayers, we were more than aware of thechallenge that faced us. Our preparation isalways immaculate, and the week prior tothis game, there was a hunger and a fierydetermination building in the side. Therewere a few nerves by game day, but thematurity of the team to channel these nervesinto positive energy was incredible. In thechanging room, five minutes before kick off,Mr D stepped in, and words were said. No-one outside of that changing room will everknow what was said, or ever quiteunderstand the impact it had, however, wecame out of the blocks like a steam train, smashing opposition players out of thefirst ruck. After an early score from full-backLewis McDonald, our dominancethroughout the entire game wasunquestionable. It also spelled the return ofprop Olly Mays, who contributed to theannihilation of the opposition scrum, andthe total outmuscling in the loose. I don’tthink many of us will forget the hit he putin on the opposition scrum half. Withfurther tries from Touqmatchi, Wright,Hutter and Anderson, and two conversionkicks from Hutter, our victory was sealed29-7. It is impossible to convey in wordsthe atmosphere felt by the boys on thatpitch, however, after eight years playingrugby for Freemen’s, I can personally say itwas my favourite experience, and I’m surea good proportion of the boys would agree.

Unfortunately we could not carry ourwinning form into the next two games.Wimbledon College and Chislehurst andSidcup are our two most difficult fixtures allyear. Losing only 15-0 to WimbledonCollege, a school with more than 250 boys tochoose from, was a positive to takeforward. A 30-12 loss to Chis and Sid greatly

flattered our opposition as we exhibitedsome great passages of rugby, especiallytowards the end of the game. However, theselosses inevitably caused a slight dip inmorale, and we proceeded to lose 38-17 and24-8 to Dartford Grammar and WallingtonGrammar respectively. Our last gamebefore Christmas was against Sevenoaks.Despite the 26-3 loss, we displayed someincredible character during the game, andhad the school from Kent on the back footon more than one occasion.

It was evident during our first Januarysession, that some of the team had enjoyeda little more turkey and trimmings thanothers. Despite this, it was a new year, and anew start for the team. We eagerlyanticipated our rematch with Wallington. However, due to the poor weather, this gamewas cancelled, making our first game of thenew year against London Oratory, away.Following an interesting bus journey, anexperience 2nd XV back rower RossO’Brien will surely not forget, we arrived atthe ground. Despite good preparation, theteam, possibly due to the long respite fromrugby, seemed somewhat unable to clickon this occasion. The referee’s questionabledecisions at scrum time were alsodetrimental to our performance, as wewere defeated 36-14.

We therefore relished the opportunity toplay Gravesend Grammar, a side we haddefeated the previous year. Weather again, however, was not our friend, and thereferee deemed the pitch too hard andunsafe to play on, thus cancelling the match. We finally got our chance against Glyn on avery wet Wednesday afternoon. Ourconfidence returned, and despite theconditions, the team displayed somefantastic rugby, and with tries from YiannisCharalambous, Jonny Woodley, BenReavley, Cox and Swindell we ran out 31-0winners. Hard skulled hooker StuartKeenan even managed to have a bite of aknuckle sandwich in the middle of thegame, and actually rather enjoyed it. Thisproud Scotsman’s only regret is that he wasnot able to reciprocate the favour.

The following Saturday came the last gameof the 1st XV season, against St Bede’sSchool. We were lucky enough, thanks to MrDeighton, to have this fixture changed fromaway to home, a far more fitting way to sendoff the departing Upper 6 boys in the side.We could not have ended the season inmore style, smashing the opposition 69-0,with a hat-trick from winger Dom Sinnott, who luckily had the try-line finally pointedout to him before the game, two from Ray,two from Woodley and further tries fromWright, Rees, Charalambous, Keenan andGough. Considering the effort andcommitment we had displayed all season, coaches again included, this was a reward, and a fitting way for the leavers to saygoodbye to Freemen’s 1st XV rugby.

Finally, I would like to say thank you totwo extremely important people. Firstly, MrDinos Alexopolous, whose unquestionablefaith, and astounding commitment madeworking with him this season extremelyenjoyable. I would simply advise him toavoid carrying dangerous looking objects,

as, with all due respect, and in the nicestway possible, he is himself a verydangerous looking object.

Of course, every one of the first teamplayers owes a serious debt of gratitude toMr Deighton. The time and effort MrDeighton puts into the 1st XV rugby isastounding; an outsider looking in wouldseriously believe that he had no othercommitments. I’m sure all the boys wouldagree with me when I say Mr D has madeplaying rugby at Freemen’s a trulyfantastic experience, which we will allcherish later in life; we will never forgetthe lessons we learned, or the fun we had.

SEVENS

The sevens seasons should not bedwelled on too heavily. Unfortunately, the side became plagued with injuries, ruling Wright, Gough, Ray and Hutterout for most, if not all of the season. Wewere still a competent side, and hadconfidence in our ability, going into someof the toughest tournaments in thecountry; the Gravesend Floodlit Sevens, the Senior Surrey Sevens and the RosslynPark Nationals. Out of the nine gamesplayed, we were unable to notch up awin. We were unlucky with the draws, asoften the teams we played in the groupstages proceeded a long way in thecompetitions. Despite this, thecommitment and character of the teamwas unfaltering, heads were always up,and there was no sulking. That is thetrue spirit of Freemen’s rugby. We playto win, always, however, we are notafraid of losing – we learn from it.

2ND XV RUGBY

The season started brightly with abrilliant and hard-fought 5-0 winagainst ‘that school from Cobham’,Patrick Anderson making an instantimpression on his return to seniorrugby with a stunning try. (He wasimmediately promoted to the firstteam). We followed this with fourcomfortable victories againstEmanuel, Sutton Valence, ReadingBluecoat and Caterham (the lattersticking in my memory as anexcellent performance).

However, our hopes of being unbeaten athalf term were dashed by the enormousWimbledon College boys with whom wecould not compete at the scrum or ruckand it was therefore difficult to secure anyreal possession. We put up a good fightand nearly got back into the game in thesecond half but eventually lost 21-5.

After half term we welcomed back DomSinnott and Patrick Anderson from the

first team who strengthened our back lineconsiderably. Our first match was againstChislehurst and Sidcup – another schoolwho always seem to have massive ladsand a strong senior squad. We beat them in abruising encounter and followed this greatvictory with another win against strongKent opposition in the form of DartfordGrammar. However, the Autumn Termended badly with two losses againstWallington County Grammar (26-19) andSevenoaks (24-0).

A combination of bad weather andunreliable opposition meant that we onlymanaged one game in the half term afterChristmas against Glyn, whose seniorrugby squad has improved greatly in recentyears. We beat them 17-5 thanks to threegreat tries from Joe Roberts, Peter Hatcherand Chris Curtis. As before, the last coupleof games did not go well. These games areusually against stronger opposition as weusually gain some non-sevens playersfrom the first team which bolsters ourpack. This year, however, our only squadaddition was Lewis McDonald (aconsiderable boost for the backs but not aforward). Nevertheless, the Upper 6leavers enjoyed their last few games and Ihope that they continue to play at university.

Player of the season was fly half and vicecaptain Joe Roberts. He had the skill andconfidence to receive the ball flat enablinghis fellow backs to execute our over-complicated backs moves (though most ofthe time he chose to step inside looking forglory!). Special mention must also go toNick Bluck (outstanding week in, week out

at scrum half), Jake Wilkinson (fearlesstackling and safe hands at inside centre),Alex Gregory (strong in the scrum andpacy with ball in hand) Johnny Wheatcroft(laid back and smiley at all times exceptduring matches when he transformed intoa demented beast) and last but not least, captain marvel Charlie Oliver (genuineFreemen’s rugby hero.) My thanks to themany talented players who had to toleratesquad rotation due to the large number ofplayers. Many of these would have beenregular choices in a normal senior rugbyseason and their good humour andpatience was much appreciated. I am surethat many will be key members of theseconds next year.

As this my last Freemen’s coaching season,I will miss the boys’ camaraderie andbanter, the satisfaction of seeing a trainingground move successfully executed in amatch, the thrill of beating a good teamand probably most importantly, having theopportunity to see these young men (mostof whom are also musically, artistically, dramatically or academically talented)putting their bodies on the line each weekto represent Freemen’s with pride.

CITY OF LONDON FREEMEN’S SCHOOL 111

U16 RUGBY

After an U15 season riddled withfrustration, disappointment andinjury, the U16s were determined tomake amends. After successful pre-season training sessions in August, hopes were high for the seasonahead. After hard work in the gymover the summer, and some seriousgrowth in our second row, the teamlooked alive.

Our first match was against local rivalsReed’s. Our enthusiasm and dynamicdefence ensured a convincing win 21-0.One lunch-break, the following week sawthe first ‘game analysis’ of many. Thenovelty of seeing ourselves on TV enabledus to relive big hits, huge runs, ‘rancid’steps and hilarious moments. However, they were obviously greatly beneficial aswe managed to rack up 81 points in thenext two matches against St John’s College,Southsea, and Seaford College. Our 50-7win against Seaford saw nine players makethe score sheet, clearly showing thestrength of the side, and the depth of talent.

This talent shone in the combination of our9 and 10, Chris Harvey and James Wilson. With Chris representing Surrey U17s thisyear, and James South East and London, their individual ability was celebrated andhighly deserved. However playing week inweek out together for both school and club, their ability to read and play off each otherprovides a solid, essential base for theteam. James’ astonishing acceleration, strength and creativity enable him toconjure gaps out of nothing, or close themhard on unsuspecting opponents. Thecombined pace, vision and flarecontributed so much to the team and sawChris finishing joint top try scoreralongside Josh French, with a total of 40tries between them.

As a side we showed huge improvementand development. Josh French, ourresident ‘gas man’ if given the ball in space, would be backed by all to put in a classyfinish and is well known for the infamous‘Kiwi’ move. Will Straughan, our oppositewing, previously shy in defence, chaseddown and floored the poor boy whofoolishly backed himself to out-run him.Our second row this year featured anotherrock-solid partnership between Chris‘beast’ Etherington and Max ‘lineout king’

Bower. Chris is quite big. His actualdimensions are unknown. Howeverspeculation of his towering figure suggesthe is 6ft 8 and weighs in at around 18 stone.During brief and spectacular moments offerocity, his flailing limbs and mighty roarsleave a path of destruction behind him.Max, our lineout don, stands focused andpoised for take-off. Ignoring thumbs… hisfrail body allows him to seamlessly float inmid-air, giving him ample time to pluckthe ball out of the sky and hand it to Chrison a plate. Max’s providing us with quick, clean ball enabled us to utilise thedangerous pace we had out wide.

We punched above our weight during thesevens season, scoring over 300 points. Inmany games, we walked out onto the pitchthe smaller side, overcoming this withgood communication, organisation andcapitalising on opportunities, withsignificant victories over Dulwich College,Reigate Grammar School, St John’sLeatherhead and Abingdon. Chris becamea vital part of the sevens squad, and hisacceleration, strong hand off, and the ‘Har-veey’ sidestep crowned him as ‘GoldenBoy’. His attitude, work-rate andknowledge of the game made him thestrong leader that everyone in the squadwas able to look up to.

The season could not have been such asuccess without the hard work and effortput in by Mr Moore who willingly gave uphis time during squads and games sessions, from video analysis, to tackle bags, tocreating a positive atmosphere within thegroup. Thanks must also go to Mr Gibson,Mr Bloomer and Dinos, who again playeda fundamental role in the success of the side.

This season has undoubtedly been afavourite of mine. It has been an absolutehonour and a privilege to play alongsidethese boys during the highs and lows of theseason. I wish every one of them continuedsuccess and look forward to Sixth Formrugby next year.

U15 RUGBY

In many respects we may be a typicalFreemen's team: small, mobile andwell-trained. In our opening match,we beat Emanuel at home 36-17.Philip MacDonald shone scoring ahat-trick of tries and conversions.

We lost the next four matches, againstSeaford College, Sutton Valence, ReadingBluecoats and Caterham, but theencouraging aspect was that the margin ofdefeat was shrinking, and our team-spiritnever flagged. We lost to significantlyheavier and stronger teams from muchlarger schools, but at least the boys wereimplementing the skills taught duringtraining. Our loss against Caterham (12-31)in which Steven Pilley and MacDonaldeach scored once, showed real promise, butour last match of the half-term, awayagainst Claremont Fan Court, bore fruit. We really communicated, supported theball–carrier, tackled much bigger boys, andscrummed in excellent fashion. The 39-0victory was well-deserved; the singing in theminibus back home and the smiles onevery face told of the significance of thiswin. MacDonald and Nicholas Mays eachscored two tries, while Sebastian Legros,Pilley and Coyle each dotted down once.

witnessed superb, tough, attritional rugby. We also moved Legros on to the wing. Our7-3 victory over Dartford Grammar hingedvery much on his try. Not surprisinglyLegros scored again, against WallingtonGrammar; so did Oliver West, and twotries from MacDonald secured our 24-12win. Unfortunately our match against StDunstan's was cancelled. We were on aripple of victory and wanted to win again. So, it was with anticipation that we set offfor Sevenoaks. After an early try from Mayswe didn’t take advantage of the slope inthe first half, so perhaps inevitably the tiny, uneven and muddy pitch, and our naivetyin negotiating overhanging trees on thetouchline, all contrived to deprive us ofvictory in a strongly contested match – themargin of 5-19 did not reflect our effort.

Three matches in January were cancelledbecause of the weather – againstWallington (rematch), Glyn and GravesendGrammar. We quickly rubbed our match-less rust away, and secured strong victoriesagainst London Oratory and St Bede's.Admittedly we were pitched againstOratory's B side, but the 60-0 margin doesnot detract from the exciting brand ofrugby played where Coyle, Legros,MacDonald and Charlie Morrison eachscored two tries, while Mays and West alsodotted down. The 39-0 victory over StBede's School from The Dicker witnessedour best rugby of the season. MacDonalddotted down twice, and Mays, Culhane,James Stringer, Joshua Carter and West allscored tries as well. Equally praiseworthyand selfless was the fine gesture offered byWilliam Nash, Edwin Ball and Emil Way tohelp St Bede's by donning their green kitand playing for them after they were threemen down at half-time. By doing so theyensured that this match continued.Commendable too, and just as exciting, was the comradeship and unity in thismatch, the culmination of five months ofhard work – we rucked effectively, we ranand passed with accuracy and kickedintelligently. It was a sweet victory. Ourcaptain, Steve Pilley, enjoyed a stronggame, and his captaincy deserves specialmention. He has led this team by playinghard himself. I have greatly enjoyedworking with this softly-spoken, self-

effacing young man who has matured intothis role and learned to encourage andcensure in equal measure and withincreasing diplomacy.

Our final match was a triumph. Wedefeated Royal Alexander and Albert 12-5on a very picturesque pitch close to theirlake. Mays and Legros each scored a try inthe second half, but not before some fairlyblunt and stern words at half-time. We hadabandoned our game-plan, and wereplaying chaotic, frenetic rugby. A few'rhino' calls, a little bit of pick-and-drive,and an accurate Morrison boot saw us backin command. It was a strong game ofrugby, and a wonderful way in which toconclude the season.

Looking back, this report may read like alist of try-scorers – it is not. It is a proudlydescribed record of the magnificentprogress that this team has made, and asincere account of my enjoyment in coachingthese boys. So it is fitting and right toscribe special praise for the 'try-less' boyswho served this team with typicalFreemen's dedication, loyalty and pride;strong boys like our props Ben Mady andMatthew Hall, our indefatigable hookerHarry Househam, and our tireless locks EdBall, Calum Lightfoot and Ben Goslingwho all scrummed with great strength. And other boys who worked, tackled andran hard, like flankers Marcus Dawes andGeorge Seymour, fullback Frederick Kratt, centre William Nash and winger Emil Way.I express an enormous debt of gratitude tothese fine boys for playing so well, and tothe many dads and mums who supportedus faithfully and enthusiastically everymatch.

SEVEN-A-SIDE SEASON

Playing against teams who played thepredictable sevens pattern of one off-load to the quick boy, we easily playedthe more attractive brand of sevens, possibly because we didn't have aspeedster. These boys worked so hard, running and holding back and passingand looping and holding an arrow-likeline. It worked.

We lost our first match of the SurreyTournament against Riddlesdown 24-19. Against a much bigger side wholooked for contact we played catch–uprugby, and nearly won; it was our onlydefeat. We conquered Harrodian on anarrow field 31-5. Coming second inour pool shot us into the Plate and wequickly dispatched Ewell Castle 34-7 inthe Quarters. Perhaps our best displayof the tournament was in the Semisagainst a typically big Christ's Hospitalteam. The score of 45-5 says everything. We danced and flung the ball wide andran ourselves ragged to destroy theopposition, and marched with ever-increasing confidence to the Finalagainst Tiffin.

The score line of 28-7 belies the tale ofour success. This is a team who grew instature, self-belief, trust in their peers, and played such an exciting brand ofrugby – full of flair and structure.Unfortunately Charlie Morrison tore ahamstring in the dying moments of thematch, but the result was alreadysecure by then. The medal ceremonywas a little poignant. Mr FredBatchelor, formerly Head of History atFreemen's, now the president of SurreySchools' rugby, beamed with pride ashe shook the hands of our 12 boys. Andthey could not contain their well-earned pride either. They deservedevery second of their success.

As usual an expression of enormousgratitude is offered to Mr Moore andthe parents who chewed theirfingernails to the quick in excitementand beaming joy. It was a magnificenttournament. Top try-scorers were PhilipMacDonald and Nicholas Mays, withseven and six tries respectively; butactually the try tally of the whole teamis more telling – we scored 24 in total.11 of the squad of 12 crossed theopposition's line at least once. CITY OF LONDON FREEMEN’S SCHOOL 113

U14A RUGBY

The team had a tough season but wecan take away many positives. Theteam has improved tremendouslyand has consistently played goodrugby.

Everyone turned up to every squad andevery fixture. We never had a lack ofplayers and the whole squad showedgreat enthusiasm.

A lot of new boys had joined the schooland we received many players. We hadnew additions mainly into the pack and anew full back. This gave the team evengreater strength. The squad became verytight as a team and started to function verywell together. We developed a largeknowledge of the game, which helped usto develop a variety of effective set piecemoves which were executed at times verysuccessfully during fixtures. The packstarted to dominate in the ruck and weresoon retaining most of their ball and evenstealing a lot of opposition ball. The packalso developed line out moves that wereeffective and allowed us to keep possessionagainst teams with huge boys.

Our first game of the season was againstEmanuel. We lost quite convincingly with ascore of 40-7, a try and conversion from thefly half put us on the scoreboard. Thismade us realise we had to improve tocompete and going into the next gameagainst Seaford College we did. This was a

close game that could have easily been avictory. The final score was 12-14 with triesfrom Hamer and Fitzpatrick. We suffereddefeats in our next two fixtures againstSutton Valence (34-5) and Caterham (46-12). Then we scored our first victoryagainst Claremont Fan court where wewon convincingly with a score of 34-14with Earl, Aitchison, Roberts, Solway,Fitzpatrick and Etherington all scoring.Unfortunately we then lost to Chislehurstand Sidcup 17-5. The first cancellation ofthe season occurred due to bad weather.Unfortunately we then came up againstsome tough opposition and lost threegames to Dartford Grammar (22-10),Wallington County Grammar School (29-7)and Sevenoaks (35-7). Following this wehad another two cancellations. We cameback and lost narrowly to London Oratory15-7 with Etherington scoring and Solwayconverting. Our fixture against GravesendGrammar was sadly cancelled as well. Thisgave us a break and a chance to come backeven stronger to beat St Bede’s quiteconvincingly with a final score of 31-12,with Bucks and Ntow-Aninkora bothscoring tries and Etherington managing toscore a hat–trick. In our final game of theseason we were determined to end on ahigh. We were facing a Harrodian teamwho we had played during the weekbefore in the Surrey 7s. Everyone wasready for it and after a positive pre-matchbuild up the team played through thephases and managed to not only win butwin convincingly.

Finally, thanks must be made, especially toMr Bird who put a lot of effort intocoaching us at every squad session andgave up each weekend to take us to thefixtures and referee. Also thanks toeveryone in the squad who put all theireffort into the team and strived to reachour targets and making the role of captainso rewarding.

This was an interesting season, despitenot winning a match all the players inthe team displayed a remarkable senseof enthusiasm and commitment andkept their heads held high. The vastmajority of players turned up for squadtraining and matches despite often somefoul weather and unpleasant conditions.Throughout the season the boys learnthow to play better together as a team. The team played eight games in all, three at home and five away. Pointswere scored in all bar two of the games.Krishan Shah scored some great trieswith hard and purposeful running andbreaking tackles. Other players whoscored points during the season wereJack Roberts, Alex Tzortsis, JamieFernandez and Hugo Solway. Overall, there was improvement as theyprogressed towards the end of theseason and we will hope to carry on likethat. The boys can look back at this seasonextremely proudly. However, one or two ofthis competitive group will bedisappointed that they did not record anunbeaten season. Something that wouldhave been achieved if they had scored atotal of four more points in the first twogames and indeed turned up in the firsthalf against a giant Chislehurst and Sidcupside. These slight shortfalls, combinedwith us losing five very winnable fixturesto the weather were the onlydisappointments in the entire season.

Throughout the season come wind, rainand shine (snow and mud!) over 50 boysattended squad with a professional andcommitted attitude. This was a credit tothe pupils but also reflected in thesuccesses of the sides. There is no doubtthat the Bs 100% record and the number of Cfixtures contributed heavily to the Assuccess. Competition for places was high andthe standard and intensity of trainingsessions was a pleasure to be involved in.

On the field, highlights came thick andfast. The team managed to demonstratetheir full repertoire of moves, skills andphase play in classy performances againstSevenoaks (54-0), Willington (48-5),Caterham (43-17) and Claremont (52-12).Nevertheless, it was the close gamesagainst Reading Bluecoat (12-5), Amesbury(24-28), Wallington (15-5) and MilbourneLodge (12-7) that they managed to grindout results that were the most pleasing. The boys rose to the test of character andtime and time again showed great teamspirit in the face of adversity. Ashtead Parkbecame a fortress as they won every homefixture.

By the end of the season the players wereunrecognisable in terms of their individualdevelopment and their understanding oftechnical and tactical aspects of thegameplan. The forwards Pilley, Howardand Swindell dominated set piece andbreak down ball and offered powerful ballcarries (including some outrageousdummies). Eldridge, Pasche, Harvey andBall unselfishly worked their hearts out indefence and won so much quick ball whichbecame the team’s platform. In thebackrow Meek and Gordon were able toplay with the freedom to make breaks, score numerous tries and turnover a hugeamount of ball.

With so much great ball created by theforwards the backline had licence to playwith freedom. After Nash and Rutherford

developed a taste for crossing thewhitewash it appeared they spent much oftheir time finishing some scintillating teamtries. Stringer’s service was sharp and hispartnership with Lumsden is developinginto an impressive one. Ben’s tacticalkicking and reading of the game was attimes exceptional and hopefully canbecome a consistent part of his game in theSenior School. Room, Slater and Waltonshowed real pride in defence, slick handsand also crossed the line on severaloccasions. Finally, Orchard playingpredominately at full back showed flashesof excellence with ball in hand andmarshalled the defence from the back.

Special thanks must go to our Captain.Throughout the season Tom Slater lead theside with maturity and enthusiasm.Despite suffering a serious injury in thegame against Reeds and missing a largepart of the season he never missed atraining session or fixture once he hadrecovered.

The season ended with frustration in allthree sevens tournaments. Despite this itwas a hugely satisfying season. Thank you toall the boys that were involved, the staffthat aided the training sessions and theparents (and grandparents) for theirsupport throughout the season no matterwhat the weather.

The team completed a remarkableunbeaten season on Wednesday 24thMarch by demolishing Willington 53-0.

The team played 13 games winning all ofthem with an incredible points record, scoring480 points and conceding just 62. This is aresult of the team’s all year round grit anddetermination, training hard twice a weekand showing true dedication on the pitch.

Throughout the season the squad playedsome delightful rugby scoring over 70 tries, and there were many highlights. The teamput in a great performance against SuttonValence romping to a 68-0 victory. Arguablythe best try came against rivals Reed’s, theball was won inside their 22, the backs thentook control with superb handling to letwinger Liam Fitt score in the corner. Referee,Mr Retzlaff, said afterwards that it was oneof the best U13 tries he had ever seen.

Alex Lumsden frequently got the team outof danger with his accurate kicking, withhis best coming against Harrodian. Underpressure in our 10 metre line he cleared to

win a lineout on theirfive metre line, a kickany professionalwould be proud of.

The team has also had to grind out somevery tense games, especially againstEmanuel and Chislehurst & Sidcup, butthe team stayed focused and kept theopposition at bay.

Thanks must go to all the sports staff whohelped throughout the season, butespecially to Mr Gibson and Mr Chadwickwho inspired the team to work hard and toplay good rugby. There is no doubt that theteam wouldn’t have achieved this superbrun of results had it not been for them.

Of course on match day it is all down tothe players and the captain of the side, RoryPenfold led the team superbly keeping

everyone’s heads up if we were losing andleading by example on and off the pitch.

It was a great season topped off by the factthat half of the team were U12 players, which builds a strong platform for nextseason. For the players moving up into theU14s and senior rugby they are alreadylooking forward to next season.

This crop of players were keen andcommitted to improving their skills anddoing themselves proud.

Many of the boys in the Cs findthemselves here due to their size and notas a result of their lack of skills oraggression in the tackle area. Our gamessessions would normally comprise a skillssession followed by a game whereby oneor two players would run rings aroundthe others and the rest would enjoyknocking each other to bits. We werevulnerable in defence all season andwithout Windle and Wilkinson, we wouldhave leaked many more tries throughoutthe season.

Mr Gibson had a huge number of playersattending his afternoon squads and as aresult was able to give many of the Cplayers game time in B fixtures. Windle,Wilkes, Thompson and Boardman werejust a few of our players who made thetransition successfully.

Rolandelli was our go-to guy and hewould destroy teams with his strong runs. The rest of the team were his supportrunners and as long as we kept possessionof the ball, things were generally dandy. However too often we scored three or fourtries in a game only to leak five or six.

As the seasonprogressed and theLower 4s grewnoticeably bigger, webecame more andmore competitive. TheUpper 3s becamemore confidentplaying with theolder boys and as aresult the teamstarted playing foreach other. We endedthe season stronglyputting togetherphase after phase ofcleverly constructed

forward play, backed up with strongrunning lines and aggressive running by thebacks. Defensively we operated as a unitand despite falling off a few tackles, managed to put more points on the boardthan the number of tries we conceded.

To the Lower 4s, I wish you well as youfight for a starting place in the U14s nextseason. Upper 3s, well done fordeveloping as players this season andgood luck next season challenging forpositions in the U13A and B teams.

We lost our first match but as the boysrealised they were growing as a unit theirgeneral play improved. They grew inconfidence and learnt what was expectedof them. For our second fixture againstAmesbury we were without our captainand playmaker Ben. However, the boyswere confident of repeating last year’svictory. Our defence showed signs ofimprovement but try scoring opportunitieswere squandered. In the third minute ofextra time, Amesbury didn’t find touchfrom a penalty under their posts and as aresult we managed to get over their line forthe match winning try.

After Christmas we had a regular supplyof matches and our standard of playimproved considerably as a result. Havingbrushed aside Kingswood House, ReigateSt Mary’s and Milbourne Lodgeconvincingly, our real test was againstDonhead Lodge. Due to roadworks we hadtwo minutes to warm up before ourtoughest match of the season.

We got off to a flyer, scoring in the firstthree minutes and never looked back.Everyone in the team was making breathtaking runs and defending with selfconfidence and conviction. It was greatwatching every member of the teammaking such a valuable contribution.

Just before our 7s season began we playeda 12-a-side tournament at Caterham. Wemade it through our pool safely as runnersup and found ourselves playing Chinthurstin the semi. We managed to pip them andwere now in the final playing Hilden Grangewho had outplayed us in pool earlier in theday. We turned on the magic in the final.Special mention must go to Eddie Freemanfor his man of the match performance(which included two tries) as well as Oliand Ben for dictating play with their pin-

point kicking. Jake too was invaluable, turning over possession throughout theday, winning us invaluable ball.

A few days later we played our first 7-a-side tournament at Rokeby. Again wemanaged to go through to the semi-final ofthe Cup, but came up against a strongShrewsbury House team. Despite going upone try to nil early on, we allowed themback into the game which relegated us to thethird/fourth play off. We despatchedRokeby in the play off and left with oursecond trophy and medals in a week.

The Donhead 7s tournament is a wellsupported event attended by strong rugbyschools from far and wide. We showedglimpses of the form we had displayed atRokeby but were out thought and outplayed. We found ourselves in the plate, risking the chance of returning to schoolbefore triple games. It turned out the threeschools we would face in the knock outstages would be all boys schools with strongrugby pedigree. Our opposition in thequarter–final was Whitgift. We had had timeto refocus and we stitched on the skills tocompletely brush them aside. We wereplaying an expansive brand of 7s but wouldwe be able maintain this intensity for twomore games? Rokeby were our semi finalopponents and a team we had beaten twicebefore that week. Once again we managedto find chinks in their armour and outpacethem through the cleverly worked spaces.

St Benedict’s were our opposition in thePlate Final. Despite falling off a few tacklesand leaking an early try, we fought ourway back and went down fighting fourtries to two. We left as Plate Runners Upwith our heads held high.

As coach it has been a rewarding season, watching my support players (non-coreplayers) become able match winners aswell as winning me my first Cup in 10years. Thanks boys. I would like to thankMr Moore for his valuable contributionsthroughout the season at games sessions,as well as Mr Windle for his supportduring 7s tournaments.

May I also extend my thanks to the troopof supporters who followed us, come rainor shine to watch us. Your enthusiasm andsupport were much appreciated.

The squad enjoyed a challenging seasonin which they worked hard at improvingtheir skills and developing their game. The commitment throughout the seasontowards squad practices and games lessonswas highlighted in the movement of someof the squad into the As later in the season.

The first match was a close encounterwith St George’s College, Weybridge, withthe scores tied at 30 points all. The teamproduced some fine rugby with forwardsadapting well to the new five-a-sidescrum and coping with the new four-manline out. They recycled the ball skilfullyallowing the backs to breakdown theopposition defence. The side scored sixtries equally shared throughout the team.

The next game against Amesbury was atough encounter resulting in a 10-35 loss, with Alex Taylor scoring both tries. TheAmesbury team was physically strongerand dominated at the breakdown. Wecontinued our hard work in squadsessions and games lessons.

Our next game resulted in a very emphaticvictory over Kingswood House, winning35-15. Again the tries were shared equallyaround the team emphasising our all roundteam approach. Buoyed on, we encounteredDonhead Lodge and lost the game 35-5.Despite encountering strong oppositionour spirited performance was impressive.

The development of the team continuedwith an impressive victory overWillington winning 60-0 as the teamplayed with great confidence and ability.

The highlight of the season was theimprovement shown throughout the wholesquad, who really worked hard atimproving their basic skills. The boysproved to themselves that sheer hardwork and determination can result insuccess and enjoyment. The squad reallyenjoyed themselves throughout the seasonand were a pleasure to coach. CITY OF LONDON FREEMEN’S SCHOOL 117

U10A RUGBY

The season started in the usual fashionwith a hard fought competition at ReadingOratory, a tournament consisting of largeprep schools from the South East. Yet againFreemen’s maintained the successfultradition winning the Cardinal’s Shieldwithout conceding a point. The squad of12 boys, including three pupils who joinedthe school in September, beat St John’sBeaumont, Donhead Lodge ‘B’, Oratory‘B’, Abingdon Prep, Thorpe House and StHugh’s scoring 22 tries in total.

The mood amongst the boys was buoyantafter winning some silverware and trainingsessions were productive. In our first fullfixture against St George’s, Weybridge, ferocious tackling wasn’t enough and theirorganisation paid off as we lost 10-25. Afterhalf term and a few weeks dedicated to

set-piece anddefensive structurewe defeatedAmesburyPreparatory Schoolby seven tries, 35-0and played someexciting, expansiverugby. Unfortunatelydue to extremeweather we lost theChinthurst Festivaland two fixturesversus Chinthurst and Caterham.

Our next competitive fixture came inCheshire versus Terra Nova PreparatorySchool in which the amount of trainingpitch time paid off with a convincing 40-5victory. After returning from a verysuccessful tour, a more cohesive bunch ofplayers strode towards the same goalsboth in training and fixtures. This wasevident against Kingswood Housewinning 35-0 and also during the CumnorHouse Tournament where we beatTonbridge feeder school, New Beacon 5-0,Shrewsbury House 10-0 and drawing withHawthorns 0-0. This meant we played

Shrewsbury Houseonce more in theSemi-Final, eventuallylosing 0-5.

After another two cancelled fixtures(Donhead Lodge and Reigate St Mary’s) weplayed Rokeby. Having refereed the gameand being very close to the action I can saythat the tackling, rucking and knowledge ofthe contact area from both teams wasexceptional, a credit to the players on thefield. We took the lead but after a few lapsesin concentration we lost narrowly 15-20.The enthusiasm towards rugby withinUpper 2 is enormous, and the boys were apleasure to work with and even tour with!I congratulate all the players who not onlyused their experience to score tries, vary lineouts, attempt audacious free pass moves butalso encouraged others into the game andallowed them to learn from their knowledgeand understanding of the game.

The squad enjoyed a successful seasonwhich began with a home fixtureagainst St George’s Weybridge. The boys battled courageously and weredrawing 5-5 at half time courtesy of an OliverChesover-Dennard try, but were unable tomatch the pace and power of the oppositionin the second half and eventually lost 15-5.

The first success came a fortnight later witha 15-5 win over local rivals Downsend.Tenacious tackling in defence and free-flowing attacking rugby were much inevidence, and tries were scored by FreddieCox, Ethan Kitto and Tom Turner.

In the last match of the term the teamproduced more impressive rugby, withforwards recycling the ball skilfully andbacks making breaks through theopposition defence. The boys ran in sixtries with Freddie Cox (2), Tom McCleave(2), Charlie Bolam and Matthew Parisi on

the scoresheet,resulting in a 30-0victory againstAmesbury.

The inauguralUnder 10 rugbytour of the NorthWest was thehighlight of theseason for many ofthe squad. Theexperience wasextremely valuable.Tackling was put to one side in the gameagainst Terra Nova prep as the boys decidedto simply outscore the opposition. By the endthe score was 45-30 to Freemen’s and thecoach’s nerves were in tatters! Ethan Kittowas the star perfomer with five tries, withOliver Chesover-Dennard, Oliver Bisping,Tom Turner and Tom McCleave also crossingthe line. The following day, with the pitchtoo hard for full-contact rugby, the boysenjoyed a game of tag versus Ryley’swhich ended in an honourable 0-0 draw.

The fixture against Kingswood House inearly February saw an improvement in theteam’s communication and commitment indefence. The forwards provided a strongplatform by winning countless rucks andthis allowed the backs to use their pace andpassing skills. Tom McCleave (3)and Michael John (2) were the tryscorers in a comfortable 25-5 win.

After a sub-par performance against Rokbywhich ended in a 35-0 defeat, the sidefinished their season with a 10-10 drawagainst Willington A. We dominated the firsthalf and were unlucky to only lead 10-0 athalf time with tries from Ethan Kitto andCharlie Bolam. However in the second halfthe boys took their foot off the gas andconceded two late tries.

Overall it was an extremely positive season. The boys worked very hard to develop theirskills, and as a consequence have improvedas individuals and as a team. The squadhas been a pleasure to coach and I wish allthe boys well when they make the step upto 12-a-side rugby next season.

After a steady start to the season the teamput in some really promising performancestowards the back end of the season.Captained by Reuben Rowe the boys had aleader who was very vocal and an excellentrunner with the ball in hand despite himbeing new to the sport. As the seasonprogressed the boys showed a much betterunderstanding of positional responsibilitiesand started to work better as a defensiveunit. Unfortunately a number of fixtureswere lost due to the weather including theChinthurst Festival which was a massivedisappointment to all involved.

Throughout the season the smallest boy,Max was the strongest defender showingwhat technique combined with heart canproduce. Other highlights includedCharlie’s snipes from scrum half (and hishat-trick at Caterham), Rob and Nick’spowerful rucking, Henry’s aggressive

breaks and pace from the outside backs ofBen, Fred, Alex and Leonidas.

The boys must continue to develop theirphysicality on the field and be moreeffective at the ruck situation if they are tocompete at Under 10 level.

The primary aim of Under 8 rugby atFreemen’s is to introduce the core skillsand principles of the sport in practice andthen offer all boys the opportunity toparticipate in a few competitive fixturesbefore they start contact rugby at Under9s. This year the boys worked really hardat developing these skills throughoutgames sessions and lunchtime squadsand were rewarded with someencouraging performances against otherschools such as Donhead, Willington and

also in the fiercely competitive InterHouse Rugby competition.

Towards the end of the second term thepupils had the opportunity to experiencesome ‘contact rugby’ and took to it like

Cricket1ST XI CRICKET

We started off with a fixture against Reed’sthe weekend before term started and werecaught cold – from a good bowling positionof 100-5 we allowed them to score 200 runs, and in reply we managed only 100. Poorperformances against KCS Wimbledon,RGS Guildford, Trinity and John Fisherfollowed, though interspersed withwinning performances against Sevenoaks,KES Witley and Emanuel by four wicketswith Will Culhane taking 4-43.

After half term we came back to schoolwith renewed vigour. The boys trainedwell in the first week back beforeoverwhelming Caterham with anoutstanding performance. More consistentbatting created partnerships, which, coupled with good bowling and fieldingresulted in successful performances. Thisform continued as we achieved aresounding win against Tiffin.

With exams out of the way the squadmoved into an intensive final part of theseason. Cricket week saw us playingschools from home and abroad, againstadult sides and in a National Festival.

The match against the XL club was onceagain a one sided affair with the schoolbatting first (for the first time in mymemory). After the loss of an early wicket,Fred Davies (169*) and Jonathan Lewis-Oliver (50) posted a total of 271-2 beforewe bowled the opposition out for under100. Against the MCC the team had a lastover loss in a closely contested gamethough bounced back with a convincingwin against Forest school and anexhilarating last over victory againstAustralian touring side St Laurence’sCollege, from Brisbane.

After a satisfying few days cricket andsome very good performances we set off toSomerset and launched into the BrutonFestival with confidence. On day one weplayed Christ’s Hospital from Sussex. After some tight early bowling andwickets we allowed them to get off thehook before Marcus Dawes (4-22) and WillCulhane (3-55) pegged them back to 215.We started well with Fred Davies scoring 36but lost wickets at regular intervals, sonever allowed ourselves the platform fromwhich to score such a total. St Peter's Yorkwere next and this was now a must wingame. We found ourselves chasing 199thanks to some solid bowling fromMichael Dawes (2-47) and Will Culhane (3-58). Unfortunately we once again lostwickets at regular intervals so weren’t able

to overtake their score, but we did salvagea draw with some resolute batting fromWill Culhane (11 off 42 balls) and EdWalton (14 off 69 balls). Finally we playedKing’s Bruton and at last got our battingtogether and posted a competitive total of168 with Fred Davies (49) leading the way.Early wickets in the Bruton innings put uson the front foot, however we let ourconcentration drift as we handed theinitiative back and allowed partnerships todevelop. A stern few words from MrStewart at drinks had the desired effect aswe ran out winners by 20 runs, MichaelDawes (2-22) and Will Culhane (3-33) onceagain our most effective bowlers. This winelevated us to runners up which was a mostsatisfying result and fitting end to the hardwork Mr Stewart, Mr Gibson and the boyshad put in after a fairly poor start.

To all leavers, thank you for all yourefforts and contribution to cricket duringyour time at Freemen’s and I wish you allthe best for the future.

2ND XI CRICKET

This was an unusual and strangelydifficult season for the team, mainlybecause the initially strong andenthusiastic commitment from the boyswaned as the summer exams loomed, andit became a battle to support a team forevery Saturday match. This inevitablyaffected our team spirit, and too often welet ourselves down with weak-mindedbatting and sloppy fielding. Frequentlycoaches euphemistically offer a post-season report which refers to their statisticsas not accurately reflecting the story of theseason, where perhaps several closedefeats belie the success of the season.

Actually, our statistics really do tell the taleof this season with accuracy – our onlyvictory of the season was against JohnFisher. We played them on their ground, and stubbornly suggested to play ourchoice of format, which was 20/20.

“They played abrand of cricket thatcan only be describedas swash-buckling”

It was a format which made a lot of sensefor us in terms of excitement and energyand time. On this occasion we did indeedrise to the challenge and several of theboys scored well, posting a verychallenging total. It was the only time thatan opposition school did not make ourtotal. The other matches do not really beartroubling the printers with description.

The squad was large because we had tocall upon many boys to help us out;indeed, some names do not appear in thesquad because they only played for us on asingle occasion – boys like Oliver Mays,Christopher Harvey and Henry Swindellwho must be thanked for helping us intruly selfless Freemen's style. Two boyswho stand out in the squad are PeterHyams and William Vinter. They played abrand of cricket that can only be describedas swash-buckling. Both boys hit the ballvery hard, with huge enjoyment and aninfectious spirit. Needless to say, bothbatting styles were unorthodox, but highlyeffective. William also bowled aninteresting left-arm off-spin, and oftenfooled the opposing batsmen with bothflight and guile.

I wish particularly to thank Mrs Hyamswho once again kept score for us onnumerous occasions. I wish all the boys thevery best for the years ahead.

The boys entered our first fixtureagainst ‘that school from Cobham’ inpositive spirits. However, due to thematch being played in the holidays,we were without the safe hands andpowerful hitting of CharlieMorrison, and the reliable battingfrom Sam Eglen.

Coyle made a fantastic debut, scoring abrilliant 69. However, no one else managedto reach double figures, and we werebowled out for 130. Despite our low score,we managed a resistance, with our bowlersdoing very well. Culhane led the attackwith three wickets for nine runs, and TomRudnai and Sam Scott bowled great lineand length, but it was in vain, with Reed’swinning by two wickets.

We then played Emanuel at home, andconvincingly won by nine wickets, bowling them out cheaply, with wicketsshared about, and scoring the runs quickly.Sam Eglen and Oscar Coyle batted verywell, to make 43* and 33 respectively.

An early test in the season came when wetravelled to Trinity. We welcomed GeorgeSeymour back into the side, and bowledgood areas, to restrict Trinity to a decentscore. With early losses of wickets, Coyleand Culhane rescued the innings, puttingon a 70 run partnership, until Culhane on36 ran Coyle out for 40, and then the verynext ball was caught on the boundary.Despite a valiant effort at the end of theinnings, with Fred Kratt hitting somesuperb shots for his 35*, we fell anagonising two runs short.

Convincing wins against KCS Wimbledon,KES Witley and John Fisher followed, withvarious squad members doing well. Oscar

Coyle and Marcus Dawes scored wellagainst KCS. Culhane bowled a fantasticspell against KES Witley to take 5-26. Coyleagain scored more runs against Fisher, making another half century for the side, with his 72.

Various cup fixtures followed, againstWimbledon College and Reigate GS in theSurrey Cup, and Royal Albert & Alexandrain the Dorking Cup. George Seymour andSam Eglen’s batting saw off WimbledonCollege, with the help of U14 Matt Jackson’squick bowling, taking three wickets. MarcusDawes scored 58* against Reigate, while afantastic performance from both GeorgeSeymour and Tom Rudnai won the fixtureagainst Royal Albert & Alexandra. GeorgeSeymour scored a memorable 158*, whileTom Rudnai scored a half-century, and tooka five-wicket haul, which included a hat-trick.

Mid-week Cup fixtures continued, and wemanaged to record victories in the DorkingCup over Ashcombe and Howard ofEffingham, beating both sides by ninewickets. Eglen performed well with the bat, scoring 61* against Ashcombe, while Daweshad a fantastic all-round performance, scoring 38 and taking three wickets. CharlieMorrison scored his maiden Freemen’shalf- century against Howard, with StevenPilley supporting the side in the field, taking four catches.

With a break from the Cup fixtures, wetravelled to Caterham with high spirits. However, George Seymour’s spin efforts, and his four wickets were not enough to

win the game, as we were bowled out for amere 28, which was an improvement fromthe start, when we lost eight wickets for noscore. Following this disappointment, wewon a close match against Tiffin, whichcame down to the last ball. Sam Eglen’s fourwickets meant we managed to securevictory by one wicket.

Despite losing to a much stronger KCSWimbledon side in the Surrey Cup, webounced back to end the season on a high, with a fantastic performance against localrivals St John’s, in the Dorking Cup final.Culhane and Jackson picked up earlywickets, with Rudnai also bowling well, but Dawes came on late, and took afantastic six wickets, bowling St John’s outfor a low 113. In reply, we batted withpatience, and Eglen and Seymour openedwell, scoring 38 and 25. Coyle and Dawesthen finished the game off, and we wonthe Dorking Cup.

Overall, we had a hugely successful season, culminating in the Cup win. The future ofcricket at the school looks bright, withOscar Coyle, Alex Culhane, Marcus Dawes,Sam Eglen and George Seymour all playingfor the 1st XI this year. Our thanks must goto Mr Bird, for his excellent coaching andguidance, but also his commitment andorganisation throughout the season.

The squad were capable of playing strongcompetitive cricket, but unfortunatelywere unable to do so in both innings onmore than one occasion.

The side had a tough season as far asresults were concerned, howeverindividual success provided highlightsthroughout the summer. Ben Mady hit twosixes and five fours to race to a score of 47in the last fixture and Nick Mays took fourwickets for 14 runs off just four oversagainst KCS Wimbledon.

Each member of the team had a role toplay and the effort and participationshown was much appreciated.

The squad’s approach to cricket wassomewhat unorthodox, however they wereable to enjoy what the game had to offer. Anumber of boys showed potential

Overall the season was a great successwith a number of very good wins andsome individuals really developingtheir cricket. There were contributionsfrom every player and whilst there were anumber of individual batting and bowlinghighlights perhaps the biggest achievementwas the team spirit that was created shownin the attitude to training, fielding andencouragement of our teammates.

Our first game was against a strong Reed’steam. Some loose bowling and someexcellent batting lead to Reed’s reaching atotal of 200. A hard score to reach, but withhelp from an excellent 50 from JordanTurton we reached a creditable 153.However, a tough lesson was learnt in thelast few overs, as batting for a draw, welost quick wickets and somehow managed tolose a game that was never there to be lost! This loss made us determined to practiseand work on the errors for the future.

This was a good attitude to keep, as our nextgame was a great victory against Emanuel.Bowling first we restricted them to 110 withMatt Jackson taking four wickets and othersbowling tight, pressure-building spells.

Batting with confidence we got off to a goodstart but after losing a few quick wickets, the nerves set in. However, as Mr Gibsonhad told us partnerships were key towinning games and sensible mature battingfrom Alex Duke and Dominic Catlow (43)developed a partnership of 52 and left thecaptain to come in and finish the job with acouple of blows to win the game.

Our next games were called off due to theweather, which was disappointing as thesewere matches we could have won. However, we practised and prepared forthe next games.

Our next game was KES Witley. Weexpected a win and that’s what we got.Although a few players were missing weperformed really well. We bowled first, and with real success as Jonny Evans took

three wickets as we held them to 56 runs.We batted well, Tom MacConnol with 34*helping our win.

KCS Wimbledon were our next opponents.Again we bowled first, and were solid inthe field. They reached 118. Our openingpair batted magnificently creating a seasonhighlight. They built a partnership ofabout 90 runs. Hugo Solway reaching 60and MacConnol getting another score inthe 30s not out. We were sure of a win. Then disaster happened and the sidestruggled against their spinner. We lostbatters 3-8 in quick succession. Again thecaptain’s big hitting helped the side overthe line to secure the win.

Against John Fisher we got off to a flyingstart but once the openers had gone theirSurrey bowler ripped through our toporder. Nick Etherington was one of the onlypositives as he smashed ten to our total. Wewere held to a very disappointing 60 runs.We set out to field and tried to take someearly wickets, but they reached our score.

We then faced Caterham. After animpressive victory last year we were lookingfor a win again. We bowled well with a greatspell from Jack Hamer, taking two wickets.Jack Roberts also bowled superbly andMichael Sheehan took a good catch on theboundary. We started batting slowly but thenhit some runs. Unfortunately the game wasabandoned due to a back injury to JackHamer. After a long delay for theambulance neither team were in the frameof mind to continue the game. Jack luckilyhas made a full recovery.

Our last game was against a good Tiffin side, and two important players were missingfrom our team. We started positively, butthen the wickets fell due to some silly shotsand we paid for it, reaching only 60 runsfor the second time in the season. Fired upto finish on a high we put on an excellentbowling performance. Matt Jackson andHugo Solway bowled with aggression andgood economies. We needed a wicket andJonny Evans gave us the breakthrough. The team managed to keep the oppositionout in the field for a long time but wesimply hadn’t scored enough runs.

A huge thank you to Mr Gibson for all hisexpertise and commitment during trainingsessions and fixtures. In future I think wewill become a hard cricket team to beat.

The first game of the season was a B andC match against Reed’s. The Cs beganwith a low score of 60. Fortunately, theirtalents lay in bowling.

Our next match was against John Fisher, who put in a solid batting performancescoring 143-5. Krishan Shah had a goodbowling spell taking two wickets for 11runs. We fell slightly short scoring 123-3.Credit has to be given to James Wilby forhis half century (53*) and centurypartnership with Krishan Shah (39*).

The second game was against adominant Caterham side with a lesspleasing result; we lost by 50 runsscoring only 81. No one performed withthe bat and we struggled bowling. We allagree that this was because of our longand relaxed half term and decided totrain harder for our next match.

The last match of the season was also ourhardest. We played a powerful Tiffin sidethat had some of the fastest bowlers wehad ever faced. We gave a creditableperformance with the ball. Hugo Solway,in the B team for bowling practice, produced an excellent opening spell andwas well backed up by Krishan Shah whotook two wickets. The batting did notmatch the strong bowling, as three quickwickets fell and we were left strugglingwith no recovery forthcoming.

This has been a tough season. There wassome sensational individual batting andbowling; despite this great effort wefailed to win any matches. However, wedid not only play to win but to have funand enjoy the sport. Everybody lookedforward to matches and we shared afeeling of camaraderie between us. Wefeel that none of this could have beenachieved without the motivation, dedication and enthusiasm of oursuperb coach Mr Brooke.

We started the season with a match atarch rivals Reed’s. We scored 213with contributions by Captain BenLumsden who made 61 and a quickfire 47 from David Pilley.

The bowlers knew they had a considerabletotal to defend and came out ready toknock the home side over. However itwasn’t that easy. The openers put on 37before Toby Nash claimed both openers’wickets, finishing with figures of 3-27.After the openers were gone we started torip through the opposition. SupportingToby, Javick Patel, Tim Newhouse and AlexLumsden all took two wickets each. Reed’sfinished 82 all out and we walked awaywith a 131 run victory.

The team then lost the next three games, including a Jet Cup match againstDulwich, which came down to the last ball.

We got back to winning ways againstCranmore, beating them by just five runs. The next match was against John Fisher inthe first round of the Surrey Cup. Webatted first but only put on 154 in 20 overs, which we didn’t think would be enoughfor victory. Our fears were realised when, after getting the openers out, in came twobatsmen who could hit the ball to allcorners of the park. The bowlerspersevered and eventually got the two ofthem out, but not before the run gap hadbeen considerably reduced. Although wedidn’t take another wicket, the bowlingkept things tight and we won by a nailbiting one run.

The next game was an easy victory againstKES Witley by nine wickets, but the teamslipped up in the following two gamesincluding a loss in the Surrey Cup. Thenext game was against John Fisher again. Itwas just as tense as the previous match, although this time we posted a score of243, our highest of the season. Ben Windlegot 61 whilst Ed Stringer, James Howardand Chris Walton got 49, 48 and 47respectively. The fielding though was poorand the team allowed the opposition to getwithin eight runs of the score, but we heldon in another thrilling finale.

We lost another three matches with somevery close finishes especially againstCaterham on their astro turf square. The teamwas not used to Astro but managed to cutCaterham down to 138. None of our top six

put in the sort of score needed to achieve avictory. Instead it was down to the tail-endersto do the work. They almost succeeded,Tim Newhouse and Tom Slater battled andgave the bowlers a challenge, continuallyrunning quick singles. Sadly the twocouldn’t hold out and we lost by 11 runs.

We really showed our full potential with ourlast two victories of the season. In the firstagainst Milbourne Lodge, we batted first. After Edward Stringer and Ben Lumsdenwere out, Ben Windle (the batting star ofthe season) joined Javick Patel (the team’sonly Surrey representative). The two hadbatted well together all summer and theyshowed that to the full in this match.

Javick played the anchor role scoring onesand twos and the occasional four, whereas,Ben couldn’t stop hitting fours. Ben waseventually run out on 67, after a thoroughlyentertaining innings. It included just threesingles, one two, only eight dot balls, 14fours and one six.

Once Ben was out Javick was joined byChris Walton who put on a helpful 20, thenJames Howard who showed his attackingstyle scoring a quick fire 27. However theinnings belonged to Javick who kept goingand once Ben was out started reallymotoring, reaching 88 with just an over togo and the team was willing him on to geta century. Unfortunately he went for oneshot too many and was out on 88, by farhis highest individual score of the season. The team finished on 242 for 5.

The bowlers came out all guns blazing, andwhen Ben Lumsden got their opener outfor a golden duck, Milbourne Lodge neverreally recovered, slumping to 131 for 8. Ben

Lumsden and Javick Patel both took twowickets for 12 and 14 respectively. Thismeant a victory by 111 runs.

In the last match we faced Downsend, ourclosest rivals. It would be for the last timeever, so this match had lots of pressurestacked on it. The batting once again didn’tdisappoint. Everybody from number oneto eight all scored ten or more. The openersdid exceptionally well against Downsend’stwo Surrey opening bowlers. Javick and Edwent out with a fearless attitude, and theyshowed it, hitting the bowlers to all cornersof the park. James Howard came in late onand hit an awesome 38 including threesixes. The team ended on 235 for 9 off 20overs – an amazing score, with a run rateof over 10 an over.

The bowlers did their jobs, despiteallowing one of Downsend’s openers to get41, they ripped through the rest of theorder. Downsend ended on 178 for 7,giving us victory by 57 runs.

Overall it was a fair season, winning eightgames and losing the same amount.Although we could have done better insome of the close games, we feel it was agood summer. Special mention should goto Ben Lumsden as captain and leadingbowler, he had a great season with the balland contributed well with the bat. AlsoBen Windle was an awesome batsmen forthe team, coming in at number 4 he oftensaved the team if they were in trouble andadded big scores if we were doing well. Thanks must go to Mr Lewis for coaching usand Mr Parkin, Mr Longden and Mr Lewisfor umpiring the matches.

The team had an up and down season, starting against Emanuel which provedto be tough. We put in a good battingperformance and finished on 152.

This was mainly due to brilliant scores byRory Penfold, George Meek and JohnnyRutherford. Unfortunately our bowlingwas average and fielding poor and weended up losing the match on thepenultimate ball – a very disappointing loss.

Our next challenge was against Reed’s. Wedrew this match. We played quite well andagain some good batting performances byGeorge Meek, James Howard and HarryFryer put us in good stead. A mentionmust go to Elliott Barnes and Matt Paschewho grabbed a couple of wickets each.

We then faced Trinity. We put a good scoreup on the board with Rory and AshleyMarshall being the best batsmen. We werebowling well and our fielding was good.We were heading for a win but then thematch was rained off. This was frustratingas we were looking forward to our firstwin of the season.

“After the brillianceof the cup final win,we went on to our

last game of theseason and beatour local rivals”

Cranmore were our next opponents and wecame out of the match with a win, our firstof the season. Our best batters were CallumRoom and James Boardman (16 each) andJames Dakin (24*). In the bowling, JamesDakin got four wickets and Elliott Barnesthree. What was pleasing was that somebatsmen lower down the order all madetheir mark as our three best batsmen. Thiswas much needed as unusual quickdismissals of our best batsmen had occurred.

Next we won against Kingswood House.Matt Ball and Rory Penfold both scoredgood half centuries and ended the matchnot out whilst Elliott Barnes and JohnnyRutherford did a good job bowling, bothgaining three wickets each. This was a bigwin for our team.

We added another win to our tally with amatch against John Fisher. Matt Pasche,Rory Penfold and Peter Wilkes all put upfantastic batting scores. Matt Pasche alsogot three good wickets. Well done to Mattfor putting in a man of the match display.

Our next match against Caterham was aloss. Steven Gordon put in a top battingdisplay and James Boardman took fourbrilliant wickets for us but we weren’t quitegood enough on the day. We followed theloss with a good display against DanesHill. Thanks to Tim Newhouse, JohnnyRutherford and George Meek for greatbatting, James Dakin and Elliott Barneswho grabbed a couple of wickets each andthe team for a superb win.

We then had quite a tough loss against Tiffinwith unfortunately no one putting in a goodperformance. The next match was a platefinal game against St Andrew’s which wewere all excited about. We enjoyeda win in a tough test. Everyonechipped in well with the batting.

In the bowling Olly Orchard took anamazing four wickets and Alex Lumsdentook three. At the end of the match wereceived a trophy for winning the Plate.

After the brilliance of the cup final win, wewent on to our last game of the season andbeat our local rivals, Downsend. Excellentdisplays by Matt Ball, Elliott Barnes, CallumRoom and once again Rory Penfold helpedus on our way to a strong win.

So, the season had come to an end and wefinished on a high with two wins in a row.Our best batter of the season had to beRory Penfold who got lots of wonderfulbatting scores including three halfcenturies. Matt Ball also battedconsistently well. Our best bowlers wereElliott Barnes (14 wickets) Matt Pasche (12wickets) and James Dakin (11 wickets).Well done to the team for a good season.

In our first fixture against KingswoodHouse, we batted first, and lost a wicket inthe second over, but things improved witha partnership between Symonds andSidwell. Our total was 107 with Symondsmaking a superb 59*. We knew we wereshort of a good score and with a horrorshow in the field, Kingswood reached ourscore with 1.3 overs to go and the loss ofjust one wicket.

Our second fixture was our first ever cupgame against Downsend. Another poorbatting performance saw us score 89 runsin our 20 overs and despite good bowlingby Ollie Cooper who took three wickets,Downsend won comfortably.

In our third fixture, against Lanesborough,Symonds and Bearryman opened and wegot off to a flier. Bearryman (17) was thefirst wicket on 39. Sidwell came in andcontinued to add to the runs, losing hiswicket just short of 50. Symonds finishedon another brilliant score of 48*. Stephensand Williams opened the bowling andboth bowled immaculately. Simpson andGraham carried on well, but Victor Fohnstole the show, taking 3-15 off three overs. We held Lanesborough off verycomfortably for our first win!

Against Danes Hill, Symonds and Grahamopened the batting. We found ourselves introuble after a maiden first over andwicket-maiden next, and we finished on

85. Bowlers Ollie Williams (two wickets)and Victor Fohn (three wickets) madeDanes Hill work, before they won in the18th over, with eight wickets down.

With only Sidwell and Symonds reachingdouble figures, we really struggled againstCranmore. Six of our team got ducks.Despite an excellent opening spell fromWilliams (three overs, two maidens twowickets for three runs) Cranmore reachedtheir target in 17 overs.

Against Milbourne Lodge, Tom Oliverscored an excellent 36*, ably supported byJake Slater (17), and a late contribution of52 (retired) from Ben Sidwell, saw us scorea huge 156. Our bowlers then held them to92 off their 20 overs.

Possibly our best performance of theseason was against Parkside, in a twoinnings match. In total, we scored 127,with great batting from Jack Symonds (32),Noah Hewitt (27) and Sidwell (55*). Weheld them to 88 off their 20 overs, withSidwell taking three wickets, two run-outsand a catch. This was the first timeFreemen’s had beaten Parkside at Under11s, so a famous victory.

We went into our game against Downsendfull of confidence and batting first, put on120 before we lost our first wicket.Symonds scored an excellent 36 andSidwell 70 in a total of 146. In reply,Downsend looked like they were cruisingto victory, until a magic spell of spinbowling from Ollie Graham. He took fourwickets for 20 runs in four overs and wewon by just one run.

Against Chinthurst we got off to a goodstart, losing our first wicket on 84. Hewittcame in and scored a very good 21, withBearryman scoring 11. Jack Symonds – thepick of the batsmen – scored 46 in a total of

142. We bowled well, with Williamsbowling four overs for just four runs (andone wicket) and Tom Oliver getting threewickets for six runs. Chinthurst neverreally looked like getting our total and wewon comfortably by 55 runs.

Our last fixture against Donhead got off toa really bad start, as we lost three wicketsfor just five runs. A good middle orderperformance saw Tom Oliver (32), JackSymonds (54*) and Ben Sidwell (32), takeus to a score of 141. Donhead couldn’t livewith the excellent bowling of OllieWilliams and Victor Fohn, who both tookthree wickets. Donhead were all out for 55.

The campaign began against KingswoodHouse. Batting first, we compiled anexcellent total of 110-2, with Eli Pooley topscoring on 16*. James Lawrence, DanielWiddowson and Alex Taylor bowled wellbut were unable to prevent KingswoodHouse from scoring the required runswith two overs to spare.

We then hosted Danes Hill and set a targetof 71, largely thanks to the solid batting ofLewis Cooper and Eli Pooley. Alex Taylorwas the pick of the bowlers with threewickets, although Danes Hill were able topass our total with five overs left.

We then faced Cranmore. Only DanielWiddowson and James Lawrence offeredresistance in a total of 63 all out.Cranmore scored the necessary runs forthe loss of only one wicket – a fine caughtand bowled by Alex Taylor – with theresult a nine wicket defeat.

Against Parkside, the side were bowledout for only 28 by an excellent bowlingattack. Parkside had little difficulty inpassing this modest score and we lost byten wickets.

This result was repeated in the next matchat Downsend. Once again we batted firstand reached a total of 58 thanks tocontributions from James Lawrence,Daniel Widdowson and AlexandrosKanavos. Downsend reached their targetwithin seven overs.

The highlight of the season came in thelast match, an away fixture againstDonhead. They batted first and reached acompetitive total of 104-5. Wickets wereshared by Daniel Widdowson (2-14),James Lawrence, Alexandros Kanavos andEdward Freeman, while Calum Walkerbowled four economical overs. Openers

Lewis Cooper and Daniel Widdowson gotus off to a good start with a first wicketpartnership of 35 and the team werecoasting to victory on 92-4 before abatting collapse saw five wickets fall for 12runs. With the scores tied on 104 werequired one run to win with only onewicket remaining. The winning run camecourtesy of a wide and the boys were ableto celebrate a victory at last. The hero wasundoubtedly Alex Taylor who retained hiscomposure during the frenetic final overs, finishing 13*.

During the season the boys all workedhard to improve their skills and played thegame with great enthusiasm and a senseof fair play. Well done and good luck inyour future cricket careers.

The season started with a confident winagainst Lanesborough. The team showedmuch promise and this was demonstratedin matches against strong sportingschools such as Cranmore and Parkside aswell as encouraging performances againstschools such as Downsend, MilbourneLodge and Chinthurst.

The boys went into the season knowingthey had plenty of potential. The squadalso had an excellent team spirit andindividuals were very supportive of eachother.

As we played the first matches it becameevident that two areas of the gameneeded to be addressed if narrow losseswere to be turned into victories. The firstwas the bowling as too many runs weregiven away through extras. The teamoften bowled beautifully at the start of aninnings only to give away too many runsat the end. Secondly, the team’s fieldingoften allowed soft runs to be scored. However, the boys worked hard to

improve these areas and as a result theirperformances improved. Indeed, theyshould be commended for their hardwork, they were keen to develop boththeir skills and their understanding of thegame. Their enthusiasm was evident atevery practice session.

Every member of the squad contributedwith both bat and ball, and the runningbetween the wickets towards the end ofthe season was excellent. However, theside must learn the balance betweenvaluing their wicket and keeping thescoring rate ticking over throughout theinnings and punishing the bad ball. Themost significant area of development wasin the field. All the squad worked hard toimprove this aspect of the game and asthe fielding improved so did the results.

Whilst the team did not win all of theirmatches there were very encouraging

performances both from individualplayers and the team as a whole in whatwas their first year of hardball and ‘out isout’ cricket. It is evident that this squadpossesses a great deal of potential and ifindividual members continue to workhard at their skills the team’s encouragingperformances will be converted intovictories.

We would like to thank all the squad fortheir hard work throughout the season.Their enthusiasm was infectious. Wewould also like to thank the team for theirsportsmanship and for the maturemanner with which they represented theSchool. Each one of them was a fineambassador and the squad set a superbexample for other year groups to follow.Well done.

The squad were a pleasure to coach, theirdedication to both matches and squadsessions allowed them to enjoy thesuccesses that cricket has to offer. Thedevelopment of the squad also allowedsome members to gain experience in theodd A team fixture.

The highlight came mid way through theseason when the boys were beginning toplay some entertaining cricket as we beatReigate Grammar by six runs due to ourconsistent tidy bowling and our positivebatting.

Throughout the season Bisping and Parisiwere the side’s most reliable source of

runs. Bisping scoring 50* in our last fixtureand Parisi providing a consistent platformthroughout the season averaging just over21. Wilkinson and Turner were our mosteffective bowlers at a very economical rateof just four runs an over.

The immense effort shown by the boys is acredit to the way they rose to everychallenge and displayed themselves andthe school at away fixtures. Within thesquad there are some fine young cricketerswho have the ability and the enthusiasmto develop their cricketing skills over theiryears at Freemen’s. I wish all the boys everysuccess in their future cricketing careers.

We used our experience and enthusiasmon the field to win by 59 runs. Each playercontributed with both bat and ball andalso varied their fielding position.Donhead were our next opponents andthey set a large target which we were notable to chase eventually losing by 24 runs.

Our first home game and the privilege ofplaying on the 1st XI field allowed us totake our experiences from the previousgames to beat Lanesborough by 23 runs. The knowledge of fielding positionsaccompanied with enthusiasm allowed usto take numerous wickets specifically fromrun outs. Milbourne Lodge then visitedAshtead and after Nick Ruddell, Ben

Boardman and Leo Kanavos scored runswithout conceding their wicket we won by57 runs.

After half term we played local rivalsDownsend and lost by 26 runs after thebowling attack managed to take eightwickets, a superb feat. The final pairscricket game against Reigate St Mary’sproduced a victory by 59 runs and set theteam up before their next two games ofhard ball, ‘out is out’ cricket.

The first came against Parkside and afterthey set a large target, we fell 25 runs short, but Charlie Sidwell contributed with 53

runs and defended his wicket too, a greatachievement. Our final game of the seasonwas against Danes Hill. With our first match against KingswoodHouse the season was off to a flying startas we recorded a momentous victory inpairs cricket, winning by 69 runs. Howeverour next match against Donhead Lodgeproved more difficult as we came upagainst a very talented side. We were stillable to post a comfortable score but due toinconsistent bowling and poor fielding welost by 37 runs. Lanesborough proved tobe one of the highlights of the season as

two evenly matched teams were onlyseparated by one run. Unfortunately thiswas our second loss in a row. However theboys were spirited in the competition andenjoyed every moment of this close match.Milbourne Lodge travelled to Ashtead Parkto face a changed Freemen’s team. Withthe inclusion of experienced A team playersthe boys were lively in the field andaccurate with their bowling, an important‘knock’ from both Pandian and Turnersteered the home side to victory by 34 runs.

U15 TENNISThis year proved a challenging season forboth the A and B teams. The As played forthe first time in the ‘AEGON Team TennisSchools League’ and although losing themajority of the games learnt a lot from theexperiences.

In our other fixtures the team faired better, beating Sutton Valence 6-2, and alsobeating Christ’s Hospital, the As winning8-1 and the Bs winning 6-3.

We then unfortunately lost to Cranleigh ontheir hard court 9-3, but were soon back towinning ways, the As beating Guildford

High 7-1 and Bs losing 6-2 in some veryclose games.

Against St Mary’s, Ascot, the team playedextremely well but were unlucky to lose 9-0 but they bounced back to win their finalgame against Harrodian in theirmagnificent school grounds.

Thanks must go to the players for all theirefforts, time and talent which made theyear’s tennis a truly inspiring andenjoyable experience.

SENIOR GIRLS’ TENNIS

The season on paper looked encouraging, and the depth in the squad was strong. The result against Sutton Valence across allthree teams went in our favour, but therewas more than a little dust on some of therackets! This success was followed up by amixture of results. Away at Christ’s Hospitalthe second and third teams produced closeresults in our favour, whilst the first teamstumbled against their weaker pairings anddemonstrated glimmers of excellence in thetougher sets. Freemen’s walked awayvictors overall, but highlighting the need towork on consistency.

In between school fixtures, House tenniswas scheduled. This highlighted the depthof tennis talent we have and was also anexcellent chance for new pupils to shineand be invited to squad training.

Fixtures followed and a convincing 4-0and 8-1 win against Dunottar helpedregain confidence. However Cranleigh’sdepth and technical ability led to anoverall score of 2-7, 1-8 and redemptionwith 7-2 for the third team. Training timewas dedicated to building an attack andidentifying the time to eventually go in forthe kill. This also required work onaccurate cross court shots and precisionvolleying skills.

For our final fixture against St John’s,Upper 6 pupils took on the challenge. All the girls had previously playedcompetitively for Freemen’s. On manylevels the afternoon was a resoundingsuccess, but wasn’t reflected in the finalscore. It was a fitting end for all the girlsconcerned.

The annual City Livery tennis fixture isalways a popular event. The standard of thepupils was outstanding, highlighting thedepth and interest of both boys’ and girls’tennis. Throughout the afternoon staff andpupils were mixed and matched toprovide equal pairings for our guests. TheCity Livery tennis club as always were a

delight; their fantastic humour anddetermination to succeed was ever present. The day was rounded up by a presentationfrom the Livery Club to Ellie Marsh for herdedication and commitment to Freemen’stennis. Our thanks go to all at the LiveryTennis Club for their excellent hospitalitythroughout the day.

The final note should go to the ladies. Thequality and attitude both on and off the courthas been exemplary, proving excellent rolemodels. There is such a wealth of enthusiasmand talent, and I hope the leavers continueto play and enjoy tennis for years to come.

The squad were not short of enthusiasm.Every week there were 15-20 girls inattendance. At each squad session wepractised serving which led to animprovement in power and accuracy.

The most pleasing area of improvementduring the season was court tactics andexploiting any weaknesses the oppositiondisplayed.

Entering the league for the first timebenefited us immensely, as it not onlyshowed us how the game should be played, but it gave us an idea of where we neededto be with our own tennis development. Both Guildford and St Catherine’s brushedus aside with ease – but it was all part ofthe learning experience.

Our friendly against St Mary’s was a reallyclose match but once again we were unableto hold our service in the crucial games andlost narrowly. The most pleasing results ofthe season were our victories againstDunnotar and the match against KingstonGrammar which we won comfortably.

I thoroughly enjoyed the fun and laughter Ishared with the squad this year and I hopethey begin next season playing confidentlyand consistently.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

The Junior Boys’ swimming season startedwith a new fixture, away at Harrodian. TheUnder 9, 10 and 11 boys proved far toostrong, as the A and B team came first andsecond respectively. This result wasrepeated when the Intermediate squadhosted Harrodian. Cumnor House PrepSchool also visited Freemen’s and the galawas settled on the final race – the Squadronrelay. This involves two swimmers from

each age group and is swum head to head. Our strength in depth was evident as wewon and therefore took the victory overall. In October Reigate GS hosted a gala whichinvolved the Intermediate and Senior squadsand also saw another victory 196-152.

We then had the onerous task of five galasin five weeks against some strongopposition. The squad again eased intothings with a win against Harrodian atIntermediate level and then lost narrowly

to Sevenoaks (147-168). The Junior Schoolteam then beat Aldro Preparatory 91-69followed by a narrow loss for the SeniorBoys away at St John’s. The final event ofthe term was a closely fought gala atCranmore involving all Junior School agegroups, where we won two age groups butlost overall 187-215.

The traditional Downsend Friday eveningfixture was our first 2010 event andallowed a minimum of eight swimmersper age group to gain competitiveswimming experience, although we lost174-222. Yet again Cranmore proved toostrong in the return fixture and we lost by asimilar margin, 210-238. Our Junior squadsthen beat Hazelwood Preparatory and theSeniors beat Reigate GS again and alsoWimbledon College, a great achievementas they have over 180 boys in each yeargroup to select from. St Benedict’s, Ealingthen visited Freemen’s who swam a Bteam against St Benedict’s A team, a greatopportunity for a large number of boyswho have had limited pool time and itwas a great occasion for all involved.Senior Boys then hosted Reed’s and wonby 23 points.

In the spring Harrodian Intermediate teamcame to Ashtead and we proved too strongas the Juniors did when swimming awayat Caterham, winning by a large margin535-445. Further fixtures against St John’s(Lost), Harrodian (won), Caterham (won)and Cumnor House (lost) completed thedomestic season and led to the SecondInvitational Prep Schools Festival hosted atFreemen’s – an event for U10, U11, U12and U13 boys and girls with over 140swimmers. The boys came second behind astrong Hawthorns team and yet again itproved to be a superb event.

It was a successful season overall with alarge number of boys swimmingcompetitively in 23 fixtures against otherschools over a range of ages. The season came with someunexpected phenomenal results. Itwas the first time in Freemen’shistory that a Senior Netball teamwas entered into official tournamentsin addition to inter school matches.

Despite this lack of experience, due to MrsBennett’s coaching ability and a group ofdedicated girls, the team proved their placein Freemen’s sport. Not only did the girlsshow great enthusiasm throughout theseason, they also achieved amazing results.

The First VII had the perfect season, notlosing a single match, including intournaments. In Freemen’s first evertournament the girls played againsttraditional netball schools, such as ReigateGrammar and Dunottar, and not onlymanaged to play well as a team but to come

out on top, wining the Dunottar Shield. AsMrs Bennett said: “This is the first netballtrophy that Freemen’s has ever won. Thegirls played extremely well and workedincredibly hard for each other as a team.”

However, the victories did not stop there. The 1st VII went on to convincingly beatKingston Grammar, Christ’s Hospital, StTeresa’s, Claremont Fan Court and KingEdwards who are well known to be verygood sporting schools.

“This season theFreemen’s netball

teams achievedsomething no-one

thought they could”

The highlight of the season however, wasthe District Tournament, an event open toall schools in the area. Once again, weseemed to pull it out of the bag and withstrong teamwork and huge determinationthe team came out undefeated and

victorious, defeating the previous winnersRosebery very convincingly as well as thevery physical opposition of Howard ofEffingham.

This season the 1st VII put netball ‘on themap’ at Freemen’s. However, it was due toMrs Bennett’s and Mrs Whiteley’scoaching that Freemen’s has developed astrong netball squad with the 2nd VII alsoproducing great results, under thecaptaincy of Amelia Harman.

This season the Freemen’s netball teamsachieved something no-one thought theycould, it goes to show how far determination, motivation and teamwork go in terms ofsucceeding. On behalf of both teams, Iwould like to thank our coaches, MrsBennett and Mrs Whiteley for their constantsupport and belief in us and our ability. It hasbeen an honour to captain such a motivatedand fun group of girls throughout thisfantastic season which provided a perfectend to the Upper 6 players and mysporting career at Freemen’s.

The teams have had a very successfulseason. Their match play and awarenessof each other on the court continuedto improve throughout the season.

This development was helped by severaltournaments played early in the seasonwhich showed a mixture of success butmore importantly bonded them as a team.

Their first match was at the Chesham PrepTournament in which they came fourth intheir group, and a few weeks later theyplayed in the Surbiton Tournamentnarrowly missing third place. Thiscompetition was hard fought and BethanMoncur and Kirsty Bizaoui did very wellshooting some fantastic goals.

Sutton High, Cranleigh Prep, Halstead andDanes Hill are the schools to beat nextseason although the average goal

difference in matches was only three. Theteam have also had their successes againstManor House, Surbiton High and DanesHill.

Both the A and B teams have worked hardtogether all season and indeed a few Bteam players have supported the A teamwhen players have been ill or injured suchas Ashlynn Harvey, Isobel Briggs, GeorgiaWest, Suzy-May Lister, Cydonie Ashbridgeand Marie O’Donovan.

In the A team, congratulations must goagain to Kirsty Bizaoui whose skill inshooting constantly under pressure inmatches has been superb. Well done toBethan Moncur for supporting Kirsty soreliably in the GA position. Isabelle Nashand Mia Bradford are very determinedcentre court players and are always in thethick of the action in the centre third.

Congratulations to all the players whohave worked hard to improve their matchplay. This hard work has paid off andshown in all their matches and indeed tothe umpires of the opponent schools whohave commented on the strength andimprovement our players have shown.

The U10s were a highly dedicated squadthis year with over 90% of the girls in theyear group regularly attending squadpractices. As a result of their commitmentthey made excellent progress culminating inan excellent showing at the St George’sTournament.

U10A ST GEORGE’S NETBALLTOURNAMENT

On Tuesday 2nd March the U10A netballteam represented Freemen’s for the StGeorge’s netball tournament. The girls didvery well with some frustrating matches asthey passed into the quarter finals.

The team played its best game againstLady Eleanor Holles. This was a trickymatch as they were quite tall and it was avery close match. After normal time, it wasa draw, so it went to extra time. Each schoolstill hadn’t scored another goal during thistime, so as the pressure rose, it wasdecided that it had to go to golden goal!

Unfortunately we just missed out onscoring the first goal and got knocked outof the cup finals. As a team we came 8thout of the 20 schools and were awardedthe fair play shield. Aisling Slater wasplayer of the team.

Thank you to all the players including LauraSwift, Alicia Wilson, Olivia Ball, Ella Pearson,Anna Whitworth, Rachel Slater, Aisling

Slater and Jasmin Clark, and Mrs Bennett andMiss Ridley our coaches. We enjoyed ourday very much even though it didn’t comeout with the result we would have liked.

This season has seen the girls go fromstrength to strength, building on theirsuccess in Form 1. An average of 25enthusiastic players have attended theclub. We have been fortunate enough tohave Jennifer Baldock and Alex Willisfrom Lower 6 mentor the girls, puttingthem through their paces each weekwith a series of drills aimed atimproving their passing and shootingskills. Our thanks go to them for theirdedication.

The girls began the season at the CheshamPrep Netball Tournament, giving themthe opportunity to experience playingagainst a variety of teams. They facedtough opposition, but the girls battledhard, despite the rain. The highlight ofthe day was the C team winning their

tournament. A week later the As and Bscame back fighting hard; the Asdefeating local rivals Downsend 3-1 andthe Bs narrowly losing 1-2. The As thentook on Claremont Fancourt, playing aclose game resulting in a 5-5 draw. InNovember, three teams travelled toGuildford High where all teams camehome victorious. The As and Bs thentook on Cranleigh Prep, but strongdefending from the opposition resultedin a 0-3 and 0-6 loss to both teams.

At practice, we fine tuned our shootingand worked on passing the ball quicklyand effectively down the court. The Asand Bs then took on Reigate Prep Schoolat home, playing a much improvedgame, both teams winning 4-3 and 3-1respectively.

The season ended with a School’sInvitation Tournament hosted atFreemen’s. The weather made it difficultfor the teams to control the ball, but aftera slow start the team played someexcellent netball – notching up winsagainst Reigate St Mary’s, Aberdour,Sutton High and local rivals Downsend, the defending champions. A drawagainst Greenacre meant that the girlsfinished t he afternoon unbeaten tosecure the title.

“Euphoric fromtheir previous

Despitestrong opposition and both teams losing, thegirls learnt a lot from the mistakes they madeand were determined to come back fighting.A week later, they played Downsend athome. The As won 2-0, however the Bsstruggled against a powerful attacking sidewith the final score being 0-8. With regularlunchtime practice and a renewed teamspirit, the girls travelled to Cranleigh PrepSchool. This time both teams won withscores of 3-0. Congratulations must go toKatie Lyons and Amber Collett who werenominated for ‘women of the matches’. Thegirls had time to improve considerably inall aspects of their game play before the nextfixture against Sutton High. Euphoric fromtheir previous victory, both teams battledhard and both teams were victorious withthe final scores being 2-0 to the As and 3-1to the Bs. CENTRAL SURREY SCHOOLS’ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Thursday 20th May the Athletics teamstravelled to Kingsmeadow Stadium,Kingston upon Thames to compete in theCentral Surrey Schools’ AthleticsChampionships, with the U15 girlscompeting to retain their title, and the U17girls looking for their first title.

The girls’ teams were organised, focussedand ready for their events. The heatsdetermined which athletes could beeligible for points representing their teamin the finals. Freemen’s was the only teamto have both their athletes in every trackevent qualify for the finals, a phenomenalachievement.

Particularly outstanding performances inthe girls’ U15s included Philippa Nicholls, who ran like lightening to win both the100m and 200m finals and Zoe Clarke, who smashed the field by a clear 11cm towin the Long Jump and finished second inthe 75m Hurdles. Emily Stewart camesecond in the High Jump jumping thesame height as the winner but losing to anearly knock down. There were also somevery promising performances from theyounger athletes who were competing upan age group: Aila Diffey finished third inthe 75m Hurdles and fifth in the 200m andMillie Reid finished fifth in the 1500m –reassuring news that future teams look tobe in safe hands.

In the girls’ U17s Jessica Filby stormed tovictory in the 800m finals with a time of2.34 mins and Katelyn Aitchison whocame second in the Hurdles also won theTriple Jump by a clear and substantial42cm. Holly Bicknell was narrowly beateninto second by a whisker in the 200m. Twoathletes from Year 9 then joined the U17team for the 300m race, Amy Owens andMaia Penfold showing real promise at thisdistance. They ran strongly against theolder athletes to finish second and third.

The relays provided an exciting and fittingend to a fantastic day’s athletics with boththe U15 and U17 teams winning inconvincing style.

These events rely on strong individualperformances, but overall results aredependant on the effort of the whole team.Girls that were perhaps not in the topthree make a big difference in such acompetitive environment where everysingle point and placing counts. As a resultof the performances throughout the day,the U15 team retained their crown asDistrict Champions, and the U17 teamwon their first ever District Champions

title. I have to thank and congratulate eachand every member of the teams for theirperformances and conduct on the day. Both teams are truly deserving winnersand have done the school extremelyproud.

The boys also had some excellentindividual performances. Will Straughansped away to win the Hurdles before outjumping the Epsom College favourite towin the Triple Jump, Sam Eglendominated the U17 1500m race (despitebeing a year young), winning by over 200metres and breaking his own personal bestby 12 seconds, and Steven Pilley ranstrongly to win the 800m. Other notableperformances came from Dominic Holm-Kander who finished second in anentertaining 1500m Steeplechase, PhilipMacDonald second in the Discus and TaiBucks in the Shot putt.

Our girls’ teams also won two moreNational Team titles at Acland BurghleySchool in London on Sunday 14th March. The U15 team of Clara Hutter, Ellie Irwinand Louisa Sparks beat Bishop ChallonerSchool 45-26 in the final. The U13team of Katy Griffin, Katharine Curran andMarie Pritchard also won their tournamentbeating Woldingham School 45-30 in thefinal to become national champions. OurU11s of Emily Elstub, Sarah Spice, GeorgiaWest and Maia Diffey, were so close tomaking it a clean sweep for Freemen’s butunfortunately lost 28-37 in the final.

This is now five years of continuousnational team epee title success.

The strength of our Junior School fencingwas apparent when Freemen’s totallydominated the IAPS prep schoolschampionships on Saturday 12th June. Wewon three of the four individual titles (U14girls Clara Hutter; U11 girls Zoe Lowrey;U14 boys William Lane) and the overallTeam trophy.

The girls Under 14 team dominated theirevent with the top six finishers all fromFreemen’s (won by Katy Griffin). In theUnder 11s Emily Elstub excelled herself inbeating older and more experienced girlsin the semi-final and in the final (winning10-9). Eight of our fencers represented the South-East section at the British YouthChampionships, held in Sheffield: JamesFrewin, Lucy Brown, Clara Hutter, EllieIrwin, Katy Griffin, Zoe Lowrey, EmilyElstub and Suzy-May Lister.

Numerous final placings have beenachieved in a variety of events and agegroups throughout the season at local, county, section, national and internationaltournaments. Perhaps the most remarkablewas the family success of Stephanie ElstubU12 and Emily Elstub U10, both winningon the last hit in their respective Surrey agegroup finals.

nationally recognised Elite Epee series andone at men’s Senior level (with 60 of thetop 64 in the country competing).

The Club now has over 60 fencers, includinga senior group during Wednesdayafternoon games, (most of whom havenow competed in at least one tournament, showing their rapid rate of progress).

The club is only able to run so effectivelybecause of the extra time and effort put inby its coaches, so my special thanks go toMatthew Dean for all his specialist andexcellent coaching help and keenness, and toJames Frewin for his boundless enthusiasmand encouragement to the others. And ofcourse, a big thank you to all our dedicatedparents who give up so much of their timeto transport our fencers and then supportthem so well at all the events.
