80% of Southeast Asia’s coral reefs are at risk due to destructive fishing practices and coral
bleaching.
ASEAN ACTION
Conserve biodiversity, sustainably use its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from use of genetic resources;
Significantly reduce the rate of biodiversity loss in the Region by 2010;
The ASEAN Blueprint for the Socio‐Cultural Community (2009‐2015)on Ensuring Environmental Sustainability
Achieve sustainable development as well as promote clean and green environment by protecting natural resource base for economic and social development including the sustainable management and conservation of soil, water, mineral, energy, biodiversity, forest, coastal and marine resources as well as improvement in water and air quality for the ASEAN region
Promote sustainable management of natural resources and biodiversity
Strategic Objective: Ensure ASEAN’s rich biological diversity is conserved and sustainably managed toward enhancing social, economic and environmental well‐being
ASEAN Heritage Parks Programme – designated a total of 27 national protected areas in the region following a declaration signed by ASEAN environment ministers in Yangon in 2003
• Established in 2005 by agreement of the 10 ASEAN member states
• Regional centre of excellence to facilitate cooperation and coordination among the AMS, and with relevant national governments, regional and international organizations, on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of such biodiversity in the ASEAN region.
The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB)
• Serve as an effective coordinative body to facilitate discussion and resolution of cross‐country biodiversity conservation issues.
• Provide a framework and mechanism for sharing information, experiences, best practices and lessons learned for efficient access by ASEAN Member States.
• Implement a proactive approach in monitoring and assessing biodiversity conservation status as a strategic approach towards identifying critical issues and future trends.
ACB: Strategic Goals
• Facilitate conduct of capacity‐building services and technology transfer.
• Enhance common understanding of biodiversity conservation issues and strengthen ASEAN regional positions in negotiations and in compliance with relevant MEAs.
• Promote regional public awareness to develop biodiversity conservation champions and enhance support at different stakeholder levels on biodiversity concerns.
ACB: Strategic Goals (cont.)
ASEAN Biodiversity Status Report 2010
Regional workshops to identify regional biodiversity indicators:Biodiversity Indicators and Database Uses and their Applications Biodiversity Indicators: Their Calculation, Interpretation and Communication
Assist AMS in the preparation of their 4th National Reports to the CBD
ASEAN Conference on Biodiversity 2009Provide a venue to report and discuss the status of biodiversity in the ASEAN region and assess the progress in achieving the 2010 target;Discuss key biodiversity issues that are important to the region, including the gaps and challenges in AMS’ biodiversity conservation efforts; Recommend the way forward in addressing the region’s biodiversity challenges beyond the 2010 target; andProfile the work of ACB and the ASEAN in biodiversity conservation and attract potential donors and partners to support regional biodiversity conservation programmes.

ASEAN Workshop for the Preparation for the Ninth UN Conference of the Parties (COP‐9) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
•Implementation of the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI) of the CBD
Develop synergistic linkages between CBD and other Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs)
•Conduct workshops on synergizing the activities of the MEAs to harmonize the various environmental agreements that AMS are parties to •increase AMS capacities in preparing national agreements for different MEAs.

ASEAN Technical Guidelines on Risk Assessment and Risk Management of GMOs/LMOs
based on the provisions of the Cartagena Protocol, the proposed technical guidelines can serve as framework for ASEAN Member States’ national biosafety strategiesgives an overview of the current situation, including the legal basis for the risk assessment of GMOs/LMOs and the availability of guidance documents. does not supersede the existing guideline endorsed by the ASEAN Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry but should be viewed as an auxiliary document that captures risk assessment based on the provisions of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
A. Programme development and policy coordination:
Other thematic areas of cooperationUrban biodiversity
undertake initiatives that will identify areas of convergence between urbanization and the sustainable management of biodiversity by identifying, documenting, and publishing best practices that will promote urban biodiversity
