THEARTSNEWS‐STATEHONOURSENSEM‐BLEPROGRAMThe State Honours Ensemble Program or SHEP is an instrumen‐tal music program run by Griffith University and the Queensland Conservatorium. Eminent conductors and composers come to Cairns to work with selected students who were nominated by their instrumental music teachers.

Congratula ons goes to Caitlin Goodhew who was accepted into the Senior State Honours Ensemble Program. Congratula ons also goes to Mitchell Booth and Mary Cerna who were accepted into the Middle School State Honours Ensemble Program. Also featured in the photograph is Johanna Radell‐Madsen from Mareeba State School. Well done Caitlin, Mitchell, Mary and Johanna on your musical achievements.

RECEIVE/RESPONDARTEXHIBITIONRecently the Receive/Respond Art Exhibi on opened in Cairns on Lake Street. Opening night was a big success and saw the gallery space filled with families. Art students from Far North Queensland were invited to nominate and compile a submis‐sion to be part of the exhibi on. Five Mareeba State High School students were successful in their nomina ons and included Kane Midgley, Jay‐Kaylah Grogan‐Creed, Amanda Jenkins, Kassie Holmes and Bianca Roccella.

Successful students submi ed a piece of art work for the exhibi on. They were then sent an image of another stu‐dents artwork to respond to. Students needed to forward their art response by the deadline. At the gallery the art‐works, both receive and respond, were exhibited side by side.

Well done to Kane, Jay‐Kaylah, Amanda, Kassie and Bianca on being part of this fantas c exhibi on. Thankyou to all the family members who supported their students.

THEARTSNEWS—ENERGYARTEXHIBITIONLast Friday night was the opening of the Energy Art Exhibi on at the Tanks Arts Centre in Cairns. Energy is the largest student art exhibi on in Queensland. This year there were over 150 entries by the best student ar sts in Far North Queensland. So far Energy has

been seen by over 10,000 people as part of the Cairns Fes val.

This year Mareeba State High School was repre‐sented at Energy by Jor‐dan Moreno, Jessica Mostert and Airlie Rob‐erts. Jordan’s wearable art was much admired and Airlie’s conceptual artwork provoked conversa on about how frag‐ile memories can be. Jessica’s sculpture received an Ergon Energy Award.

PRINCIPALSWORDSThe past few weeks have seen a spike in teasing and bullying amongst our student popula on. This is not only disappoin ng but is causing disrup ons to classrooms and learning. Such behaviour will not be tolerated. Next term, we will be providing a range of proac ve programs for groups of students engaged in such behaviours to teach them how to form more posi ve and respec ul rela onships. We will also be working in partnership with some external providers to provide more appropriate and purposeful learning opportuni es for disengaged students. I am hopeful that these intensive interven on strategies will restore a calmer, more conducive learning environment.

The outstanding successes students have achieved in the Arts feature in this newsle er highlights the richness and variety of opportuni es students have at our school.

This week interviews have been conducted to appoint the new Principal. Hopefully we will all know who this is by the end of next week. This term, and this year are disappearing quickly. Year 12 students have 39 days of school le . Year 11s and 10s have 44 days and year 7s, 8s and 9s have 59 school days ahead.

LIBRARYNEWS—YEAR8FANTASYWRITERS’CAMPIn the first week of September, 6 keen Mareeba State High School students a ended the interschool Year 8 Fantasy Writ‐ers’ Camp at Black Gully, Tinaroo, with 18 other students from a range of Tableland and Cairns schools.

Throughout the four days, students took part in a magical quest, par cipa ng in a series of chal‐lenging ac vi es involving teamwork and their imagina ons. The students were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with published author, Michael Pryor, who helped the students complete a piece of fantasy wri ng. The camp provided a great opportunity for stu‐dents to meet with other students who shared common interests, and will hopefully inspire the next genera on of writers.

Subjects were selected for our soon‐to‐be Year 11s and some crucial conversa ons were had regarding students future pathways. Pathways Evening was held on Wednesday 2nd September from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm in the school

Hall.

This event provided informa on for parents and students about subject choices and their post schooling pathways.

Subject displays, Heads of Departments and Program Coordinators were available to

provide details about each course of study, as well as access to alternate course providers and registered training organisa ons currently working with our school‐based appren ces and trainees.
