The university will transform the Roland Levinskybuilding into an arts career hub on Wednesday24 March. This Arts Graduate EmploymentShowcase is open to all students, graduates,members of the public and staff – it will helpFaculty of Arts students and graduates getcreative with their careers.

We'll bring together some of the UK's mostsuccessful arts individuals, including thefounder of Grazia magazine, to provide expertadvice on how to flourish in the world of art.But the event will also be a showcase for emergingtalent – so you'll get the chance to meet a rich blendof people and pick up practical, expert advice on howto flourish as artists in professional life.

There'll be presentations, workshops, exhibition stands, employershowcases, stage productions and informal sofa sessions so that you'll getinsights into how to take charge of your career. You can mix with awardwinning authors, national media agencies, commercial photographers,public artists, local theatres and international illustrators. There'll also befriendly business advisors available who will help turn your talent intoenterprise.

If you want study at postgraduate level, or if you're looking to become ateacher, then there's advice about these career paths here too. We will alsohave our successful and approachable alumni on hand to answer anyquestions you might have about opportunities after graduation.

The session will be an illustratedlecture tracing the behind the scenesprogress of one particular illustrationcommission. From the first piece ofself promotion sent to the client, to the final artwork in print, via briefing,negotiation, roughs, artwork, invoicing etc.

This will provide very practical information for a smooth-running andhazard-avoiding career as a freelancer. A session especially relevant toillustrators but also useful to others going into freelance creative work.

How to get into broadcasting

TWOFOUR will be coming in to give a presentation to students interestedin a career in broadcasting.

Creator of UK Grazia, a TV series for kids; publisher of Redmagazine; journalist for Just 17; consultant to Tony Blair'sgovernment and now media agency owner and entrepreneur inPlymouth and London. If you dream of using your creative skillsout in the big wide world in an exciting and relevant way, Dawn'sstory will inspire you. An arts graduate, Dawn persued her mediaambitions and learned a whole bunch of interesting and crucialstuff on the way. Share 20 years of experience and learn howyou too can get ahead in arts and media with Dawn.

Public Art… A Case StudyLesley Kerman has made Public Art works for The ArtsCouncil, The Environment Agency, SUSTRANS, SAFLE forthe St David's Centre in Cardiff and most recently, ZESTfor the Cumberland Centre in Devonport.

She will talk about how her studio practice evolved intomaking public art, about working with commissioners,architects and engineers, the concept of 'the artist asethnographer' as Hal Foster puts it, and the aims, difficultiesand ambitions involved in making public art.

Postgraduate study for arts graduates

The talk will cover the range of types of postgraduate courses and awardsavailable for arts graduates, using the programmes at UoP as examples.There will be advice on fees, funding and application procedures.The session will include a Q&A opportunity.

Nema El-Nahas, a highly successful UoP graduate, now of the Arts Council,will be holding a workshop session with Cindy Dalgleish, Director ofCreative Economy for Plymouth City Development Company, on theopportunities for graduates who are pursuing careers in the creativeeconomy sector. This will include funding opportunities, supportprogrammes, business planning and development.

Thisworkshop is suitable for any creative, no matter what stage of thinking youare at.Workshop facilitated by creative coach Karin Jordan who has worked withover 350 creative practitioners at all stages of their career.

Sofa session with the authorBabs Horton is a prizewinning writer of fiction, member ofthe Welsh Academy and works as a Learning developmentadvisor and associate lecture in English at the Universityof Plymouth.

Getting Published - Informal sofa sessionChildren's author and editor, Helen Greathead, who has worked in thepublishing industry for over 20 years, specialising in children's non-fiction.She was the original commissioning editor of the Horrible Histories series.Helen will talk about her experiences in the business,giving some useful pointers as to how to get published.

Other Features...Vinitha RajkumarVinitha owns her own dance school in Plymouth and will be showcasing aroutine on the stage from 12.00. After lunch there will also be an opportunityto ask any questions in an informal sofa session with her.

Peter CadePeter owns his own photography business and will be talking about hisexperiences in the world of photography. He will be giving hints and tips onhow to be successful in this industry and answering any other questions youmay have.
