DESCRIPTION
The Arts Centre Gold Coast Subscription Season 2013 show program.TRANSCRIPT
Your City. Your Centre. Your Season.
WelCome noteWe are thrilled to present our 2013 Subscription Season.
This year, we’ve handpicked dance, theatre and music from around Australia and the globe that we know you’ll love. Not only is the program diverse, but it brings outstanding cultural experiences to our stage, to enjoy in our city.
The Gold Coast is fast becoming a hot spot on the cultural map. We are gaining a reputation as both an incubator for local talent, and a must-visit destination for reputable touring companies. We’ve already celebrated many milestones, including first time presentations from world-class companies such as Bangarra Dance Theatre and Sydney Dance Company.
In 2013, for the first time on the Gold Coast, we welcome Opera Australia’s Oz Opera with the highly acclaimed Don Giovanni. We’ll also see why European audiences have been rising to their feet for Cuba’s Ballet Revolución, which was included in the Royal Variety Performance 2012. And on the subject of royalty, we host the beloved soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in an intimate recital of exquisite classics.
We’ll also bring you another hilarious Williamson satire and welcome back Bell Shakespeare, Circa and DanceNorth.
These productions and more will be presented in Your City, at Your Centre, as Your Season.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa’s glorious soprano voice soars the borders and culture of her native New Zealand. Like Sutherland, Melba and Callas before her, Dame Kiri’s formidable vocal talents are scored in world musical history. Dame Kiri’s extraordinary appearance will be a superb opportunity to hear why she is regarded as one of the world’s most remarkable operatic sopranos applauded by audiences of every generation. Accompanied by her pianist Terence Dennis she’ll perform a rich programme of classic and contemporary highlights from her famed repertoire.

Black Crows identifies with soldiers in battle, and loved ones left at home; and a Fall From Grace, inspired by Lucas Cranach’s painting The Three Graces, negotiates the fine balance between the masculine and feminine. Fugue, a powerful work set to Ravel’s Bolero, draws inspiration from Strasbourg’s dancing plague of 1518, where men and women danced for days, some even to their death.

Through the eyes of three generations, Sundowner tells the story of so many Australian families. If a loved one starts to lose their memories, what role can we play in holding on to them? And how can we care for them in the present while honouring their memory? Starring Helen Morse, original music by Paul Kelly, Megan Washington and Kelly Ryall, and an appearance from the Tivoli Lovelies (original dancers from the Tivoli Theatre), Sundowner combines theatre, dance and physicality in a powerful story of love: love of family, love of history and love of life.

Gruff, well ordered, quintessentially Aussie family man Ron has 111 minutes left to live. In a final gesture, he hosts a family party. As the minutes tick away, the party unravels to reveal a dysfunctional family that’s outlandishly bizarre, yet utterly recognisable. This dark comedy is guaranteed to make you laugh... but the elbow jabbing at your ribs is sharper than expected.

Love plays a major role in all our lives, but as Shakespeare knew too well, love does not always guarantee a fairy tale ending. Set across three different eras, and telling three different versions of events, Expressions Dance Company cuts through to the essence of what is real, human and inevitable. The state’s only full-time professional orchestra brings a delightful program full of contrasts to the Gold Coast with Something old, Something New. The spotlight is on opposites, with the old and the new, frenetic and calm, serious and funny pieces highlighted by a performance by Malcolm Stewart, QSO’s horn player, of Gliére’s expressive Concerto for Horn. Presented and conducted by the witty Guy Noble, this is a concert for all the family to enjoy.

In this exquisite cabaret of the senses, a diva melts into a rope, balloons and bubble wrap discover their artistic souls while bodies twist and fly. Seven performers of unbelievable ability bend the very fabric of reality. Sexy, funny and explosive, Circa returns with a breathless cocktail of new circus, cabaret and vaudeville. Control and abandon, skill and humour, lyricism and anarchy all meld into a sinuous fugue of profound beauty. Circa is world-renowned for creating startling new ways to experience circus.
