Portfolio Development Thursdays, 9/15/11 - 11/3/11, 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM, (8 classes) Members: $238 | Non-Members: $264 | Studio Fee: $100 Instructor: Emma Copley The Arts Center offers an intensive program of drawing and painting with the goal of creating strong portfolio pieces for college applications that represent the student’s current artistic interests and demonstrate drawing skills and awareness of formal visual values. For an art student, preparing a portfolio is a central part of the college application process. This course is designed for high school juniors and seniors pursuing a college degree in art or design.

In this course, we will explore a variety of tools, media and approaches ranging from large scale charcoal drawings to bookmaking, image manipulation and wintergreen oil transfers. We will draw and paint from direct observation, using still life, nude figure models, and landscape as our subject matter, as is typically preferred by most art colleges. Students will begin to develop their own artist practice, discovering interests in new methods and gaining new skills in drawing and image making. We will discuss portfolio reviews and answer any questions on how to research the appropriate school. Students will gain insight into the application process for college art programs and at the end of the course will have the chance to present their rough portfolios at an informal review to a visiting art/design professional. The studio fee covers the cost of high quality art materials, a model’s fee, and studio maintenance.

- W R I T I N G - Writing What You Know Wednesdays, 9/14/11 - 10/26/11, 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM, (6 classes) Wednesdays, 11/9/11 - 12/21/11, 6:30PM - 9:30PM, (6 classes) | No class 11/23. Members: $285 | Non-Members: $310 Instructor: Marion Roach Smith Flannery O’Connor said that anyone who survived childhood has enough material to write for the rest of his or her life. She’s right, of course. But writing about yourself and your crazy (or not-so-crazy) family can be the big vein, if you’re ready, or the brick wall, if you’re not. This course will help you dig among your stuff and get it down on paper in some interesting, funny, enlightening, compelling, readable and possibly saleable way. Let’s go! It’s there for the mining. Creating the Poetry Chapbook Thursdays, 9/15/11 - 10/27/11, 5:30:00 PM - 8:30:00 PM, (6 classes) Members: $194 | Non-Members: $216 | Studio Fee: $10 Instructor: Julie Gutmann Closets and drawers full of rough drafts and unfinished poems? Many finished poems but no idea how they go together? Poet Evan Boland writes, “In the work of a new poet, chapbooks serve both as a sampling and shape of the first book which is to come.” This poetry chapbook workshop will introduce an experimental, visual, playful form for poets to create a themed collection of their work, through exercises in ordering, language experiments, title finding and book design. If you’ve been writing for years, or are looking for a way to begin capturing those fragmentary thoughts and memories, the process of creating a chapbook manuscript will help you identify those themes and connections. We will also explore the field of self-publishing, professional chapbook competitions, and how to create a poetic memoir to share with family and friends.

Memoirama Thursday, 9/22/11, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM, (1 class) Thursday, 11/10/11, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM, (1 class) Members: $72 | Non-Members: $80 Instructor: Marion Roach Smith Put down that glue gun, toss aside that scrapbook, and take the challenge to tell your tale. A possible subtitle for this one-night class could easily be Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Memoir, but that’s a little wordy, isn’t it? We’ll talk about being too wordy, as well as every other aspect of writing what you know, in

this unique, one-night, rarely-offered class. Multi-media, highly entertaining, this is the class you say you never have time to take in the 8-week, wait-listed version we regularly offer. Highly informative, after this class you will be able to write memoir, whether it be a college essay, a blog, a letter home, an essay for public radio, an op-ed for the newspaper, or a book-length memoir. Marion Roach Smith is a former New York Times staffer, author of four mass-market books, and commentator on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. This will include a session during which you can pitch your tale to Marion, and she tells you how to do it. Required Text: The Memoir Project, A Thoroughly Non-Standardized Text for Writing and Life (June, 2011, Grand Central Publishing) is available for purchase at Market Block Books in Troy.

Shaping the Short Story Every other Saturday: 9/24/11, 10/9/11, 10/22/11, 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM, (3 classes) Members: $113 | Non-Members: $126 Instructor: Lucia A. Nevai Is it a tale, a flash fiction or a classic short story? Find out! Drawing on your own experience, develop techniques for crafting characters and events into a compelling and imaginative piece of short fiction. Lucia Nevai is the author of two critically-acclaimed short story collections, Star Game, winner of the Iowa Short Fiction Award, and Normal, published by Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill. Her fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, Tin House, and Iowa Review among others. Note: this class will meet every other Saturday and is limited to five students.

Reading Memoir So You Can Write Your Own Tuesdays, 10/4/11 - 11/22/11, 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM, (8 classes) Members: $198 | Non-Members: $220 Instructor: Donna Miller If you are thinking of taking “Writing What You Know” to learn to write your own story, consider taking this first. Sharpening memoir reading skills takes us deep into the writer’s intentions to consider technique, pace, structure, and dialog. Whether you plan to write a memoir or you want to experience great reading, this class is good preparation and great fun. Bring along your draft memoir or your notes and journals if you’re still in the planning stages. There will be time to read, write and discuss good storytelling.

Master Class: Memoir with Marion Roach Smith First Friday of Every Month, 10/7/11 - 6/1/12, 1:00PM - 4:00PM, Members: $640 | Non-Members: $720 Instructor: Marion Roach Smith Book in a drawer? Book in your head? If you are ready to work hard, this once-a-month, three-hour master class will get that book finished by summer, 2012. Limited to 12 students, a one paragraph pitch on what the book is about, accompanied by a three-page (double-spaced) writing sample must be submitted to The Arts Center for review. The deadline to submit is September 15. Please send to Marion Roach Smith Master Class, c/o The Arts Center, 265 River Street, Troy, NY 12180.
