CIM Graduates, and Avant Garde Duo Kimberly Zaleski-Flute, & Trevor Kazarian-Cello, mix genres includingclassical, jazz, beat box, and more, with original compositions, and contemporary improvisational forms.

Adventurous new music Live at Nighttown!

Their motive has always been to emotionally connect with their audience while breaking the boundaries of twohistorically conservative, classical instruments.

Although classically trained at the Cleveland Institute of Music, IN2ATIVE's vibe is anything but traditional. Thisavant-garde duo, consisting of Kimberly Zaleski (flute) and Trevor Kazarian (cello) specializes in a fusion ofmusical genres, combining the street rhythms of beat-box with more contemporary improvisational forms, quite"out of the box." The combination and blending of musical styles, mixed with jamming high energy and beat-boxing swing creates a product that is sweet but also very passionate. All of their pieces are originalcompositions, inspired by events and experiences, both past and present.

This year, IN2ATIVE has been chosen as Musicians-in Residence at the Cleveland Clinic, an honor garnered fromtheir consistent outreach initiative through both the Clinic and University Hospitals. They are also performingand teaching artists on the roster of the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning Agency (CAL). Through CAL, they haveprogrammed both performances and workshops for children ranging in age from pre-school through highschool. They are very excited to present their music for students at Penn State University this fall 2016.

IN2ATIVE was the first prize winner for the 2014 Young Artist Initiative Competition as part of the Ohio ArtsPresenters Network Conference. Quoted by Jim Walker, former principal flute of the LA Philharmonic: "[IN2ATIVE] is one of the freshest concepts intoday's music scene. The musicians are first rate and their music is only innovative, but appealing to alllisteners."

IN2ATIVE has also been reviewed in CMUSE music news by Andrea Caccese: "The music created by avant-garde,

Ralph Peterson Trio featuring The CurtisBrothers$20.00 Saturday 4/09 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Master Drummer, leads cutting edge Trio! Featuring: Ralph Peterson-Drums, Zaccai Curtis-Piano, & LuquesCurtis-Acoustic Bass.

Featuring music from their new release "TriAngular III" on Onyx Music & Truth Revolution Records.

A great sequel is a rarity worth waiting for. Drummer/composer Ralph Peterson returns to the trio format for onlythe third time in 30 years on TriAngular III, due out April 8 via Peterson's own Onyx Music label and TruthRevolution Records. This time out he's joined by brothers Zaccai and Luques Curtis on piano and bass, adding anew incarnation to the prestigious TriAngular lineage. Recorded live at New Haven's Firehouse 12, TriAngular III provides not only a showcase for Peterson's boundlessenergy and imagination, but also a testament to the healing power of music. TriAngular III will be released just days before the drummer marks a landmark 20 years drink and drug free. "I'mnow approaching the balance where I've been clean longer than I ever used," he says, "and that's a powerfulexample of what is possible through faith. It shows the restorative and healing power of the music to move youthrough situations in life that can be challenging." Given the evidence of the music contained herein, which bristles with electric interplay and abundant joy, RalphPeterson has plenty of life and music left in him. The album is a fitting successor to its two predecessors: 1988'sTriangular with Geri Allen and Essiet Essiet, and 2000's Triangular 2 with David Kikoski and Gerald Cannon. "The trio is one of the purest vehicles for expression in this music," Peterson says. "With the right players you cansound like an orchestra." Peterson is particularly proud of the line-up for this outing, as Luques Curtis was a student of the drummer's atBerklee College of Music and he's therefore known both brothers for nearly half their lives. "Our families haveadopted each other," he says. "The fact that they're brothers makes them seem telepathic at times, and I think ofthem as my brothers. These two guys never rest on their laurels. They're always pushing the music forward, they're always trying to get something different out of it, and that's good for me as I get older."

Legendary Singer/Songwriter returns to Nighttown!

In a career that spans five decades, 23 albums and three GRAMMY awards, multi-talentedsinger/songwriter/guitarist Tom Chapin has covered an incredible amount of creative ground. In addition to hiswork as a recording artist and concert performer, Chapin has acted on Broadway, as well as working extensivelyin films, television and radio.

As a music-maker, Chapin has maintained two long and productive parallel careers, both as a highly respectedcontemporary folk artist and as a pioneer in the field of children's music. In the former role, Chapin hasestablished a reputation for insightful, heartfelt songcraft and effortlessly charismatic live performances.Chapin's infectious songs, sterling musicianship and personal warmth consistently shine through, whether he'sperforming on record or in a concert hall, an outdoor festival, a school, in front of a symphony orchestra or in anintimate coffeehouse.

The New York Times called Chapin "one of the great personalities in contemporary folk music."

The son of noted jazz drummer and teacher Jim Chapin and the grandson of author/critic Kenneth Burke andportrait painter James Chapin, Tom grew up in a family that encouraged artistic pursuits. He began performingprofessionally as a teenager in the early 1960s, playing in Greenwich Village folk clubs alongside his siblingsHarry and Steve as The Chapin Brothers.

Chapin launched his solo recording career with 1976's Life Is Like That. It was the first of a string of albums thatfurther established his reputation as both a gifted storyteller and a natural entertainer, winning him anuncommonly loyal fan base in the process. He also continued to venture into other creative areas, playing thelead role in the hit Broadway musical Pump Boys and Dinettes, working off-Broadway as musical director of bothCotton Patch Gospel and Harry Chapin: Lies and Legends, and serving as host of TV's National GeographicExplorer. He's also written and performed satirical topical songs for National Public Radio's Morning Edition, andhad a cameo role as the Vice Presidential candidate in Jonathan Demme's 2004 remake of The ManchurianCandidate.

A new CD, Put A Light In Your Window, features original songs, one completely reinterpreted song, and a cover ofa folk classic.

In addition to his varied musical and media endeavors, Chapin is also a powerful advocate on behalf of a varietyof charitable causes. He is an active board member of WhyHunger, the organization which the artist's olderbrother, the late singer-songwriter/activist Harry Chapin, founded (as World Hunger Year) in the 1970s. He alsoremains active in a variety of environmental causes, as well as efforts on behalf of music and the arts in ourpublic schools.

"I'm at that place in my life where I follow what interests me," Chapin concludes. "I still love the guitar, I still loveto sing, and I still love the thrill of creation: a good song, a good recording, a good concert. I feel blessed to be myown boss, creating my own material and performing for so many different audiences, ages and generations."

15 60 75 The Numbers Band has been praised by almost every national music publication and severalinternational publications since the beginning of their 30 years of live performances and recordings. Many fansare under the impression that the band remains obscure by choice. In fact, they have never been offered acontract from any recording company in the industry, ever.

The music "cannot be categorized", "it is undefinable", "too original". The music industry is not about music

Page 15: The Art of the Fugue (Bach, Beethoven, - EZezinelive.ezezine.com/ezine/pdf/640_3-2016.03.24.17.13.archive.pdf · This is a one person show with the world ... Original Alternative

The music "cannot be categorized", "it is undefinable", "too original". The music industry is not about musicanymore. It is about selling products the public can relate to. After all, it is a business. Even "alternative" musichas become a label. The founder of the band, Robert Kidney, explains, "The music industry, the media, and thetellsusourvision (TV) are defining for the American public what is good music by only playing and supporting whatis profitable. We are taught to disregard everything that is not familiar. We (The Numbers Band) give the peopleour best. Our effort goes into being creative, unique and original. We define our own sound. There are no rulesbecause we don't play the game. We are not in it for the game, we're in it for the music."

So, the band continues to create and evolve outside of the "Rock & Roll" establishment. The majority of therecordings were financed by friends who loved the music enough to put up their own money. Hundreds ofphotographs taken of the band in different stages of it's existence by different amazing people tell a story ofintense performances, long nights, and the passing of time. Band members have come and gone, and returnedagain. Robert sees music as much more than an emotional release or a performance. It is a job, a job for whichhe demands respect and payment for services.

The title of the band has always aroused curiosity from fans. The fans called them The Numbers because it waseasier than trying to get the figures right. Numbers had not been used in a name before, and the political climatein 1970 was quite Orwell-ian. Robert choose a sequence of numbers mentioned in a book written by Paul Olivercalled The Blues Fell This Morning. In the chapter "The Jinx Is On Me", Oliver describes the Numbers Racketpopular in Harlem in the 1950s and how dreams were analyzed as number sequences and used for placing bets. The band's music theory specialist, Terry Hynde, also discovered that 15 divided 15 is 1, 60 divided by 15 is 4,and 75 divided by 15 is 5. In a musician's world, "1, 4, 5," is referred to as the "universal progression".

The band resides in northeast Ohio. They have several recordings under their belt and more music than they canafford to release.
