SuMmer Art Camp & pre-TeEn Studios 2016
in Haverford
JUNE 13 - AUG. 26 AGES 4 - 12
Art, science, engineering, and fun collide for one STEAM-tacular summer. Gear up your imagination, spark up your creativity, and unleash your inner-
artist for The Art of Invention & Innovation at Main Line Art Center in Haverford!
Want to know what it is like to create a masterpiece in a real art studio alongside an actual working artist, and then exhibit your creations in a gallery with all of your new friends? This is the Main Line Art Center Camp experience!
Each week-long session introduces young artists to a variety of age-appropriate materials, techniques, and artistic concepts through imaginative projects designed to tap into each child’s innate creativity. In a social and nurturing environment, young artists explore drawing, painting, ceramics, jewelry and metals, printmaking, digital media, and more, all while developing crucial life-skills like critical-thinking and problem-solving.
Camp is broken down into age groups with low teacher-to-student ratios to ensure individualized learning. Throughout the day, campers move to different studios to explore new mediums and techniques as they create masterpieces based on the weekly theme. On Fridays we welcome a special guest to enhance our learning, then celebrate with friends and family at an Art Party and exhibition in the award-winning galleries.
Summer Art Camp for 4 year olds is offered in half days (9 - 11:45 am), for ages 5-12, in morning (9 - 11:45 am) or afternoon (12:45 - 3:30 pm) half days, or full days (9 am - 3:30 pm). Before care and after care are available to extend a full day camper’s day from 8 am - 6 pm, and lunch care (11:45 am - 12:45 pm) is available for morning half day campers.
Science, technology, engineering and math (the STEM subjects) blended with art?! But of course! Just ask Leonardo Da Vinci, artist, scientist, and inventor (some say he invited the bicycle!). Integrating art helps children grasp abstract concepts by rooting them in practice, teaches creative problem-solving, and encourages children to be independent thinkers. All of this wrapped up into some seriously fun and imaginative projects that will send campers to the moon and back, blur the lines of art, movement, and music, and transform the way they see the world!

“ The experience at art camp was positive all around! The teachers were seasoned and skilled and by taking an interest in my daughter’s work, they encouraged her to succeed at her own level. She had fun and enjoyed her day tremendously. This was our best camp experience!”

Ceramics ‘Round and ‘round it goes! Learn how to turn a clump of clay into something that is both beautiful and functional on the potter’s wheel. A pre-teen favorite!
Drawing: Sketchbook TechniquesDig doodling? Take it to the next level and learn to quickly capture ideas and images, while creating a book about the way that you see the world. We’ll cover observational drawing, gesture drawing, telling a story with pictures, and incorporating text.
Glass Fusing
Let’s melt some glass! Explore light, transparency, layering, and color, and create shapes and forms using techniques like kiln carving and slumping. We will create impressive-looking tiles, coasters, small dishes, necklaces, and earrings that you will be proud to say you made yourself.
Print, Paper & Book ArtsOrigami is great, but there’s way more you can do with a piece of paper! From weaving an accordion-bound journal, to drawing and etching on a variety of surfaces, to smashing pulp into paper, we’ll tap into your creative side and have you creating differently with print, paper and book arts!
Graffiti Arts Express yourself! We’ll look at the history and present form of this eclectic medium as we create powerful works of art using stencils, lettering, montage, painting, and more. Then, learn how artists take it from the street to the world of art and media.
Photo Encaustics Break free of the picture frame! Turn photographic prints that you’ve taken or found into mixed-media masterpieces as you explore the boundaries of image making. Photo encaustics combines photography with the ancient art of painting using beeswax and pigments. Collage, sand, paint, and draw your way to a surprising work of art.
