Wall of Ice, a Bother for Track-makersA rare, natural phenomenon has occurred this year on the lakes surrounding Arjeplog, a bother for most of the ice-track makers, creating a lot of extra work.

In Swedish it is called Isfall (fallen ice) relating to a similar occur-rence in glaciers. In English, we call it a ‘wall of ice’.

What happened was that the 30-50 centimetre-thick ice on Lake Kakel and Lake Uddjaur cracked and was pushed up in a way similar to when the earth’s crust forms a mountain range. A ‘wall of ice’ can stretch from one side of a lake to the other.

Cartest, Colmis, Icemakers and ATM are all having problems resulting from this year’s isfall, which stretches for many kilometres across the two lakes. There are now walls of ice, up to two metres in height that close off access to some of the ice tracks.

Harald Fjellstöm at Colmis says that this kind of ‘wall of ice’ occurrence is rare and happens only once every ten years or so.

He says that they try using chain saws to take away the ice, but it entails a lot of work since the ice keeps moving all the time.

At Cartest they have tried building a bridge using old telephone poles but again there are problems regarding the movement of the ice.

Alf Sundström says that they are not really worried. They accept that this

is how it is and they know that they can always find a solution. It does, however, create a lot of extra work.

Why does this phenomenon occur some years? Nobody knows for sure, but one possible explanation is that the water levels are lower than usual this season in both Lake Uddjaur and Lake Kakel, which are hydro-electric reservoirs.

When the water level drops the surface area shrinks and the ice is forced upwards.

Sten-Åke Nilsson at ATM (Arjeplog Test Management) is sure that this ice wall phenomenon is caused by the ice having no place to go when the surface shrinks.

For people snow-mobiling on the lakes this year, the risk of crashing into a unexpected wall of ice is very high, especially if the weather is bad and visibility poor. There have been some very serious accidents in the past as a result of snow-mobilers being surprised by these treacherous walls of ice.

Anna Sundström from Cartest stands next to a two-metre-high piece of ice, which is part of a several-kilometre-long wall of ice. This wall is a result of the shrinking surface of the lakes. It is a bother for the track-makers and can be dangerous for snow-mobilers.

Changes since last seasonEvery season new things appear, some things disappear and some change. Here are some of these changes, which we will write about in detail in the coming issues of The Arjeplog Times. • There has been a lot of refurbishing and construction work in the various restaurants, hotels and shops. Look around and see the improvements for example at Pizzeria Verona.

• ICA supemarket has had a total face-lift and there are now many more organic products, especially fruit and vegetables. They have installed new fridges to keep and display the food, keeping it fresh and making it pleasing to the eye.

• There was a sewerage leak in central Arjeplog last summer resulting in water damage in the basements of some of the buildings. The basement of Hotell Lyktan was totally water-logged but they took the opportunity and refurbished the basement into a new and attractive recreation area.

• Mathörnan restaurant on Drottninggatan has been com-pletely re-done. The original blue building was painted black with red decor and is now Leon’s Steakhouse and Sportsbar. Together with Harrys Pub and Restaurant (situated nextdoor Leon’s) Thair runs this food and entertainment centre.

• Nelly’s Café in the market square went bankcrupt at the end of last year’s season and has stood empty and deserted since then. The good news is that Helena and Jonny from Viltbutiken have bought the place and plan to move their shop and open a café there at the beginning of March.

• FlyCar have decided not to build their Iglootel this year.

• Jerry Johansson, former mayor in Arvidsjaur, resigned from his post in autumn and Lotta Åman is acting mayor.

• There is a new information light sign at the entrance to the town. Arjeplog’s Kommun has an updated and improved logo and municipal arms, a new komunchef (highest municipal official), Ann Engberg as well as a competent person respon-sible for information and marketing, Fredrik Westerlund.
