Salajekna is the largest glacier in Sweden. It has existed for more than eleven thousand years. Maria Söderberg is taking a big chunk of the ice to Stockholm in order to promote tourism in Arjeplog.In the north western part of Arjeplog, on the border with Norway, lies Salajekna, a valley glacier with an areal extension of 24 km2. Mysterious and very remote, this glacier is best visited by snow-mobile.

responsible for a lot of tourist activities in Arjeplog during the summer months.

Once again, she has one of her ‘crazy’ (in a good way) ideas. She wants to take a large piece of the glacier and display it at the winderness tourism fair in Stockholm in the beginning of March.

As usual when it comes to Maria, things happens fast, she is the embodiment of a ‘do-er’. She did not wait to get fi nancing before she launched her project of fetching a 1000-2000 kilo piece of ice from the glacier. Some companies in Arjeplog, among them LiLAB, think that her idea is fantastic and gladly contribute to this project.

A number of companies and even private people are helping to put up some of the 60,000 kronor estimated to get the ice block to the capital of Sweden. She says that she really needs more sponsors to pay all the bills and is very happy if she gets more help.

After getting the necessary permits to cut the ice, Maria found people to help transport the ice via snow-mobile to the road. An adventure that had Maria and others biting their nails. Right now, the ice is in Arjeplog waiting for further transport to Stockholm.

It will be a main attraction at the fair and already there is a lot of hype around the ancient ice. Newspapers and radio reports help keep the interest high. She says that they will

off er visitors a chance to taste the ice in a drink, but they must be aware that it contains both sand and perhaps other things.

Now that the ice is in civilisation all that remains for Maria is to fi nd the lacking funds. Th ere is still a chance to be part of this historic event. Footnote: A glacier is formed when the amount of snow that falls is more than the amount that thaws. 12,000 years ago ice covered a big part of Sweden.

• Th e 37-year-old man who attacked and murdered Hans Granberg with an axe in Arvidsjaur last December, was sentenced this week for murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

He will be put into psychiatric care until he is considered men-tally healthy, after which he will be deported from Sweden for life.

Since the Luleå District Court considers that there is a risk that the 37-year-old might escape, they have decided to keep him in jail until the sentence can be implemented.

• Last weekend, some men were riding their snow-mobiles on the Pite River near Piteå when suddenly the ice broke under one of them. Th e driver jumped off , grabbed hold of handlebars and refused to let go. He did not want his new snow-mobile, that is worth 150,000 kronor, to sink to the bottom of the river.

Th ey called the police and SOS Alarm but were told to let go of the snow-mobile and leave the area for a safer place. Th ey were upset that they did not get more help but in the end they left the snow-mobiles and got to a safe place.

Th ey were naturally shocked and upset, but physically unharmed.

• In the mountains of Arjeplog a man fell from a three-meter high cliff . A friend alerted SOS and he was fl own by a police helicopter together with medical staff to Sunderby hospital, near Luleå. He is reported to be lightly injured.

• According to local papers three members of the board of the Silver-hatten Concern have been reported to the police for accounting fraud. Former ceo, Jan Edvardsson is behind the report.

There is a crisis group in Arjeplog headed by the mayor, Britta Flinkfeldt Jansson and she said that luckily they have never been called on to do anything.Th ere are very few really bad things that happen in Lapland. No earth-quakes, hurricanes, wars nor acts of terror. In fact, life is pretty safe and quite predictable here.

In spite of this, there is a law in Sweden that each kommun must have a group that can take over in an emer-gency situation.

Britta said that last year they took part in a crisis exercise where the scenario was a power failure in the whole of the municipal area.

‘Tingsbacka’ is the name of the municipal building on Storgatan that houses the municipal offi ces, the police station and various state and other departments. In this building, there is a room for emergencies, where there are separate telephone and power supplies.

Other than power outages, one of the worst case scenarios, is fl ooding if the walls of the hydro-electric dams break. Another possibility is a really bad traffi c accident.

In the case of such a crisis or emer-gency situation, it is her responsibility to take charge. She is, however, very happy to run a crisis group that has never ever been called on to do anything.

What is good in Arjeplog?Th e Nature is untouched, it is clean here and not crowded like a city. Th e people are nice and it is so good to stay in a private house. We can get everything we need.

What is bad in Arjeplog?Th ere are so many car testers here and I think we should all try to harmonize our behaviour to the locals, which some people do not do. It would be nice if some of the older equipment at the gym could be updated and more modern.

What music you enjoy?Mostly rock music.

What is important in life?To live a healthy and relaxed life. To have good relationships with your family.Also, do not be negative. If you have a problem, solve it and don’t dwell on it.

I moved to Germany from Budapest in Hungary about one and a half years ago and I feel so much more relaxed in Germany. Th is is important.

The Silver MuseumThe Arjeplog mountain area may seem barren and untouched. There are not many traces that show that this is a landscape that has been in use for thousands of years. But for those who know the area and have heard stories about it, the long history of the landscape becomes visible. The key to the cultural landscape of the mountain region can be found in the exhibitions at the Silver Museum. The silver hall is a treasure chamber and beneath its blue arches the Sami silver shines – wealth and prosperity are concealed in collars and belts, cups, beakers and spoons. Th e silver of the festive attire showed success in reindeer herding and trading. Magnifi cent silver collars crown the display that, with its almost 700 individual items, is the largest of its kind. In the next room, in Mujttalus = ‘From the memory’ there are memories narrated from the everyday life of the Sami people - costumes and objects, where natural materials have insightfully been used.

Hunting and fi shing, as well as farming and forestry, have always been important to the people of Arjeplog. Th ese industries have their rightful place in the museum and are displayed in re-created environments in the exhibitions of the settlers.

Company: Arctic Food, during the winter at Arvidsjaur Airport. We sell smoked and marinated salmon which we prepare ourselves. We also sell moose and reindeer meat. We run the café at the airport inside the security gate on Mondays, Fridays and some Wednesdays.

Favourite food: Fish - of course!

Dream car: I do not have a dream car, I am not interested in cars.

Spare-time activities: I don’t have so much spare time, I work almost all the time. When I am not working I like to spend time with my family.

We also have a cottage in Abbor-träsk, where my husband comes from. We go there to relax.

What’s good in Norrbotten?I like the closeness to Nature and the beauty of Nature. I am not a city person.

What’s bad in Norrbotten?It is so far away from everything.

Present car: We have a Citroën C5 as a family car and a Citroën Jumpy, which is a good practical car for the business.

(Norrbotten is a county that (among other places) includes Arjeplog, Arvids-jaur and Piteå).

Politicians also have to stop using tobacco - this was one of the deci-sions, among other things, that the 31 participating politicians decided on, at last Monday’s town council meeting in Arjeplog.

Th is decision extends the tobacco ban, that already exists for employees of the kommun, to include paid politicians.

Most politicians in Arjeplog are only paid for the time they spend in meetings and now they will be forced to give up all tobacco consumption, including snuff , while they are work-ing for the kommun.

Th e use of tobacco was banned in 2011 for all kommun employees dur-ing working hours, as well as during their fi ka (coff ee/tea) breaks.

Ban on Tobacco at the Kommun

Lunch break is excluded from the ban, but if you smoke during lunch you must change your clothes before coming back to work.

Th ere are about 350 people working for the kommun and, as far as we can work out, none of the employees have stopped smoking or using snuff since the ban was enforced two years ago.

Some of the people we spoke to at the kommun admitted to cheating when they can.

One politician, however, thinks that it is a matter of honour to follow the rules.

Th is new extension of the tobacco ban to include politicians has caused some media coverage and discussions in Arjeplog and Sweden.

Fish prepared in traditional way

Eva Wallin and her husband Mikael Granström run the company, Arctic Food. Th ey live in Piteå but are also stationed at the airport in Arvidsjaur on Mondays and Fridays during the winter season. Th ey run the café inside the security control at the airport, where they also sell their products.

Th ey specialize in fi sh which they prepare themselves. Th ey use only Swedish fi sh and other food stuff s from the north. Th ey prepare the fi sh according to old traditional ways.

Th ey also sell some moose and reindeer meat, which is locally produced. Th eir most popular product is gravlax which is marinated salmon and smoked salmon. Th ey have also experimented with various other spices when marinating the salmon.

Do you know why Jürgen Zech-mann has a beard? This summer Jürgen Zechmann will retire from a long working life for BOSCH. He remembers so many things about the early years of car testing in Arjeplog that he is busy writing book about it.

Zechmann came to Arjeplog for the fi rst time in 1977, one year after completing his engineering studies.

He said that they had tested on a Mercedes S-classe, a BMW 3-series and an old Golf. Th eir job was to develop a new braking system, but sometimes it did not work at all and they ended up making holes in the snow-bank.

He continued, “We had so much work that we smelled like forest people, this is when I decided to grow a beard; I saved fi ve minutes every day for extra work”.

Zechmann remembers the ‘after parties’ at Hotell Silverhatten where they stayed and worked. He remembers Jörgen Stenberg playing ”Killing me softly” and the wall of beer cans in the apartment.

Jürgen Zechmann was a fi reman, he helped to solve any problems that developed. Everything was so new, and the brake system was described as ”Belt-ABS”.

He explained that they were always nervous to see if the car would make it down the hill and all the way to the BOSCH-See (Lake Hornavan). Th e cars gave them the biggest problem because they were not made for minus 30°C. Nobody had heard of engine heaters then. T-Röd (denatured spirits) saved them many times. Th e measure-ment equipment weighed 60 kilos and could not run on 12 volt, so they had a stinking one-piston engine in the boot to provide 220 volts. Th e diesel froze and it was smelly and noisy.

In his book Jürgen Zechmann will tell a lot of stories that are now forgot-ten and of many things now forgiven. Th e person involved in the stories is always called ‘Harry’, so nobody has to worry.

Harry was involved in an incident when he was found fast asleep in the reception of a small hotel in Arjeplog, smelling strongly of alcohol.

Th at was another time and another world and the people who came to Arjeplog then were pioneers. Th ere were no rules.

In the ’s the ABS-brakes were functioning and BOSCH had their offi ces, workshops, tracks in seven diff erent places in and around Arjeplog.

One day, Zechmann found a road to a summer house in Vaitoudden, ten kilometres west of Arjeplog.

He remembers thinking that it would be a perfect place for new facilities and the ice on the lake there froze much quicker than on Lake Hornavan.

He had been very involved in the BOSCH test facilities in Boxberg in Germany and so he started working on creating a new test area in Arjeplog.

After months of negotiations, wheelings and dealing, the Vaitoudden facilities was opened in 2003 by the Swedish king and other dignitaries.

Now it is time for Jürgen to end the BOSCH chapter in his life and continue in to the next part. He is planning to fi nish his book about car testing and to go travelling with his wife Bärbel. And if that is not enough to keep him busy, he can always work on his house and in his garden outside Stuttgart.

Jürgen Zechmann spent 35 years working for BOSCH and probably 4 or 5 years in Arjeplog. If he saved fi ve minutes everyday because he did not have to shave, how many extra minutes or hours did he work?

We wish him luck in his ‘new life’.

Exactly ten years ago BOSCH still used the facilities on Maskinvägen just west of Arjeplog. Th ey still used ice tracks on Lake Hornavan which they called the BOSCH-See. In 2003, BOSCH moved to Vaitoudden where they are still located.

The Winter MarketTh e winter (Lappish) market will take place this year from Friday-Sunday March 8 -10. In the coming issue of Th e Arjeplog Times on March 8, there will be detailed information. Here are a few highlights, so you can plan ahead.

Th e inauguration will take place with a fi re sculpture on Friday 18.30 by the ice-skating path near the schools (below Lena’s Fish shop and the Glass studio).

Besides the usual market trade, there will be various exhibitions at the Silver Museum and new this year, guided tours in English and German on Sunday.
