Message from the Principal We would like to thank you for your continued support of Sherwood School. We continue to
be a vibrant school with many events and activities meant to support your child’s learning
and personal growth. These cannot happen without you and we are so grateful. Our grade
5 students recently participated in creating soapstone carvings in class, many of our Div 3
students will going to WE Day in November, 20 students will be participating in the annual
Imperial Oil Expo, 8 students will be participating in the YOUTHSmart Mental Health
Initiative, our Outdoor Stewardship students will be going out for their first hike and many of
our students will be weaving blankets for the homeless.
Our fall fundraisers were successful endeavours and we are about to launch our
Winter/Christmas fundraising campaigns. Consider supporting Sherwood by purchasing
Christmas plants and Purdy’s chocolates.
We are excited about our Cross-Country team’s success this year as well as all of our
volleyball teams. Our first grade 6-7 developmental volleyball tournament will be played on
Thursday, November 2, and our Junior Digfest tournament will be November 3 and 4th. It
would be great if you came out and supported our teams.
Ms. Moore is looking for LEGO
If you have any LEGO at home that you would like to part
ways with, please consider donating to our school! We
have many students who love being creative with LEGO.
At this time, we are only seeking classic LEGO brand
brick materials (not duplo) to help keep our collection
consistent.

British Columbia Sailing Program S.E.A.
Sherwood School is pleased to be offering another, once-in-a-lifetime British Columbia
sailing experience through the S.E.A. program. Our school has been participating in this
unique program for the past fifteen years. The S.E.A program provides students with a
hands-on look at the spectacular geography, social history and ecology of beautiful British
Columbia. Each participant will develop their personal potential through the various team-
building and outdoor activities involved our field trip, such as exploring marine biology
during day excursions and sea kayaking along the Strait of Georgia. Participants will learn
sailing concepts and put their knowledge to the
test while we sail the South Gulf Islands, BC from
October 9-13, 2018.
This program is open to any student who will be
enrolled in Grade 8 and 9 in the 2018/2019 school
year (current grade 7’s and 8’s).

Grade 9 Farewell
Attention grade 9 families! We are pleased to announce that the grade 9 farewell
celebrations will be held at Heritage Park on June 14, 2018.
Please contact Mr. Castagne if you would like to volunteer for this event.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
A huge thank-you to our Sherwood community who supported the book fair this fall!
Scholastic had some great titles, not to mention a new Diary of a Wimpy Kid coming this
November, and we were able to add some great choices to our library. The kids are really
excited to read all the new books, so, once again…..

Hello Parents and Guardians,
Just a reminder of a couple important dates School Council & Parent Society: 1. Our casino dates are November 1 & 2. If you are available for a shift or can
sign-up for the ‘spare’ list, please get a form from the office or email [email protected]
2. Our next council meeting/AGM is on Monday November 13, 2017 at 6:30 PM.
Casino and our fundraising efforts help enhance student programming and educational
opportunities that would not be possible with just our basic funding. This is why your
participation is so valuable. If you are unable to attend meetings, we can always use
daytime volunteers to help sort our fundraising orders like apples and Purdy’s Chocolates.

August and September, and Ron Southern and Griffith Woods Schools are
set to open later this year. These four schools will create 3,000 exciting new
learning spaces for students.
Our communities keep expanding, and we expect to report another record year
of student enrolment. To support our more than 120,000 students, we hired an
additional 240 teachers this year.

I hope that many of you were able to attend a welcome back or meet the
teacher event at your schools. We encourage families to be a part of their
school communities and I look forward to working together for student success.
Non-instructional days
Ever wondered what happens during a non-instructional day at your school?
Students are not in attendance but staff are.
Non-instructional days may be used for parent/teacher/student conferences,
professional learning for staff, appeals or organizational work. They provide
opportunities for school and system staff to work together as well as provide
cost-saving measures for transportation. Individual schools may have the ability
to include additional non-instructional days, depending on the circumstances.
Speak to your school’s principal for more information on the professional
learning opportunities happening at your school!
Classroom Improvement Fund
The CBE has been allocated $13 million through the Classroom Improvement
Fund grant. Through a grant application approval process, each school may be
eligible for the following (for example): hiring of an additional part-time teacher
or non-teaching staff, cost of new or augmented professional development
initiatives to address student specific needs, or material or equipment for the
classroom.
Principals and staff are collaborating on grant proposals to improve the student
experience in the classroom.
2017-18 School fees
CBE fees for the 2017-18 school year have been finalized and approved. Fees
have been loaded into parents’ My CBE Account during September and
October. A confirmation email will be sent in October to all parents/guardians
who pre-registered for yellow school bus service. The email will include
transportation fee information and payment options. You can cancel your
transportation pre-registration with no financial penalty using My CBE
Account or replying to the confirmation email before Oct. 31, 2017.
No child is ever denied access to an education in the CBE because of an
inability to pay. The CBE has a waiver process for families who can’t afford to
pay the fees. Visit our Waivers page for more information and the documents
required as proof of income.

2017 The SE Community Resource Centre is preparing
Christmas hampers for families.
Please note the following criteria to receive a hamper
from the SE Resource Centre.
Families must live in the communities the Resource Centre serves Families must be a registered client with the Resource Centre or by Referral Families need to provide a proof of identification for all family members in
the household and proof of address at the time of registration
Please contact the SE Resource Centre at 403 720-3322 for more information. There are a limited amount of application forms in the
Sherwood School office.
Clients must take their completed forms directly to the Resource Centre. Monday-Friday 8:00am – 12.00noon 1:00pm – 4:30pm

We have had a very busy and successful start to this school year, and I would like to share some of the highlights.

Election Day is October 16 Calgary’s civic election is October 16. Remember to get out and vote for your school trustee, mayor and city councillor.

New Board of Trustees

The trustees were sworn in on Oct. 27, 2017 by the Honourable John D. Rooke, Associate Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta. The CBE welcomes two returning trustees, Trustee Hurdman and Trustee Hrdlicka, and five new trustees, Trustee Adams, Trustee Dennis, Trustee Davis, Trustee Hehr and Trustee Bradshaw to the Board. Calgary Board of Education students achieved high standards on the 2016-17 Provincial Achievement Tests and Diploma Exams.
The hard work of students and teachers is once again evident in our Diploma Exam and Provincial Achievement Test results.
Teachers, students, parents and our community partners continue to work together to support student learning and academic success. As always, we review the results, analyze the data and look for areas of future improvement. Provincial achievement testing is one of several ways the CBE measures student success. Other measures include report card data, student survey data and the province’s Accountability Pillar. Full student results are available on the CBE website. Individual school results will be posted on your school website. Grade 6 and Grade 9 PAT Results
• CBE student results in Grade 6 were equal to or better than the province in all measures at both the Acceptable Standard and the Standard of Excellence. In Grade 9 our results were equal to or better than the provincial results in French Language Arts, Science and Social Studies at the Acceptable Standard and in French Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies at the Standard of Excellence.
• While the CBE is 4.3 percentage points above the province in Grade 6 mathematics, our Grade 9 result at the Acceptable Standard shows a point from which we can improve. Our K-12 Mathematics Strategy is being implemented this year and is designed to support student success in mathematics.
Grade 12 Diploma Examinations
• CBE results were above provincial results in all but three of the Diploma Exams and in 10 out of 11 at the Standard of Excellence. More than 40 per cent of CBE students writing the Biology 30 and Chemistry 30 Diploma Exams have achieved the Standard of Excellence. In Physics 30, more than half the students achieved the Standard of Excellence this year.
