The Arch

There are four things on earth that are small but unusually wise: Ants—they aren’t strong, but they store up food for the winter. Rock badgers—they aren’t powerful, but they make their homes among the rocky cliffs. Locusts—they have no king, but they march like an army in ranks. Lizards—they are easy to catch, but they are found even in kings’ palaces.

(Proverbs 30:24-28, New Living Translation) God speaks to us even through the actions of bugs and creepy-crawlies! The writers of scripture took the time to pray, meditate, look, and listen to what God was teaching. Then, they passed on what they learned to us. Charlie Pride sang a song that was written by Ann J. Morton. Just like the simple-seeming wisdom of Proverbs, the refrain is loaded with truth. “Take time out for Jesus, he took time for you.” As we enter the Summer season, let us keep our eyes open to God’s creation…our hearts and minds open to what God is trying to teach us through them. Watch the critters, feel the wind, soak up the sun—and hear in them the message of the Son. Listen to the still, quiet voice of God that is all around us. Happy Summer!

A Note from the Moderator

Layman’s 10 Commandments 1. Prayer is not a “spare wheel” that you pull out when in trouble,

but it is a “steering wheel” that directs the right path through-out the journey.

2. So why is a car’s windshield so large and the rear view mirror so small? Because our past is not as important as our future. So look ahead and move on.

3. Friendship is like a book. It takes a few minutes to burn, but it takes years to write.

4. All things in life are temporary. If going well, enjoy it, they will not last forever. If going wrong, don’t worry, they can’t last long either.

5. Old friends are GOLD! New friends are a DIAMOND! If you get a diamond, don’t forget the gold! Because to hold a dia-mond, you always need a base of gold!

6. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, God smiles from above and says, “relax sweetheart, it’s just a bend, not the end!”

7. When Gold solves your problems, you have faith in God’s abil-ities. When God doesn’t solve your problems, God has faith in your abilities.

8. A blind person asked St. Anthony, “Can there be anything worse than losing eyesight?” He replied, “Yes, losing your vi-sion!”

9. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.

10. Worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles, it takes away today’s PEACE!

A recent book I reread is TUMBLING a novel by Diane McKinney-Whetstone. It is one that has stayed with me for several years. I don't know if it is still available, but if it is, it

is well worth reading. Herbie and Noon, a couple living in an African-American close-knit community in South Philadelphia are an extremely happy couple, who have never been blessed with children. Both dearly wanted a family, but an experience in Noon's past has prevented this. Suddenly, they are blessed with two infants left on their doorstep. At the urging of their neighbors in the community, they keep both babies to raise as their own. The girls become inseparable and become a part of this close-knit group.

Noon becomes very involved with raising her new found family. Herbie finds companionship at a local Jazz Club with a woman named Ethel. And, as much as he loves Noon and the girls, he finds Ethel a warm and caring friend.

The book explains a great deal about this little community of row houses . TUMBLING shows how love between a man and his wife, adoptive children and their parents and the community can forge

stronger bonds than blood.

TUMBLING lets us see how, after a hard week at work at lower paying jobs gives these friends and neighbors something to look forward to. They find their entertainment dancing at the local jazz club.

This is a warm and delightful book that I highly recommend reading.

Samantha Cruse, granddaughter of Mimi & Don Cruse graduated from Findley University on April 27th. She is

continuing her graduate education for the next two years (including summer sessions). It is her hope to receive her Ph.D. in Pediatric Physical Therapy. Sounds like she will be a very busy lady for the next few years.

Our Sunbirds, Gerri Tommer & Pat Kuhar have returned to sunny Cleveland.

Unfortunately, Pat returned with a very bad back problem. Prayers for Pat are in order.

Thanks to the Meal Ministry, Betty ate very well during her recuperation from

Retina Surgery. Youth Sunday was really inspiring! It is so good to see our younger generation

taking such an active part in our congregation.

Pat Nichol went to Alaska recently for her nephew's wedding. He was married in Juneau! Congratulations to Holly Sajna and Nancy Ickes, who completed the

Cleveland Christian Home 5K run in April. Also to Holly & Mark Sajna, who both ran the Cleveland Half Marathon in May!
