In Kenya we have the Yellow Baboon Papio cynocephalus which leaves in varied habitats and are extremely adoptable but they are majorly found in semi arid habitats but some can be found in Tropical and light forests. They are majorly found in Very Tall Trees and next to water sources. The adult Baboon is 50 to 100 Lb and about 15” at the shoulders and the average baboon lifespan is between 20 to 30 years.

They are diurnal terrestrial; they also leave in complex mixed gender social groups of between 8 to 200 individuals called troops. They are omnivorous and have a general liking for fruits and other plant parts .They also feed on Insects but they will eat almost any kind of food they come across including young gazelles and in some instances even there young ones! the loser submits and walks away. They are herbivorous and feed on roots and buds on tree tops that few animals can gain access to this they can manage due to their height advantage which also helps them to keep a kin eye on predators across the wide savannah plains.

Female giraffes give birth while standing and the young once usually have to endure a 5 feet fall when arriving into the world also there height gives them a disadvantage especially when drinking water from a water hole to do so they must spread their legs and bend down in an awkward position which makes them vulnerable to predators.

Giraffe have spotted patterns on their coats and no two individuals have the same pattern but giraffe that come from the same area more or less appear similar

The African buffalo Syncerus caffer caffer is the largest sub species of buffalo also known as the cape buffalo and mostly found in East and South Africa. It is also reputed to be one of the most stubborn animals found in Kenya. A fully grown buffalo weighs between 500 to 900kgs with a shoulder hight of 1m to 1.7m.Being a grazer it leaves in swamp, mopane grasslands and flood plains. It is mostly found in habitat with dense cover, such as reeds and thickets and at times can also be found in open woodlands.

They graze in herds with the central parts made up of mostly related females and there offspring’s which are then surrounded by subordinate males and females and high ranking males. A typical buffalo resembles the domestic cow but with gravish color with a dangerous look. They also have dangerously up curving horns. They are also known to be high tempered and unpredictable and has been known to gore people without warning and even other predators that pray on them and dare to come to close to the heard

The Lion Panthera Leo is amongst the Big Five animals in Kenya that comprise The Buffalo, Elephant, Rhino and Cheater. It is also a member of the four big cats and the second largest after the tiger. Lions are the most social of the cat family and they live in Prides which consist of related females and offspring’s and a limited number of adult males. In the pride it is the Lioness (the female lions) that does the hunting and searching for food. The lion is an apex predator. Lions spend a lot of time resting averagely 20hrs a day and the period that they are most active is after dark when they spend most of their time socializing and grooming. There is no breeding period as lions are polyestrous. Lions are phenomenol”lovers” with mating occurring once every fifteen minutes or on the average 21 times a day. The Bush elephant is the largest known living terrestrial animal they are also Known as L. Africana and the males have an average height of 3.7m,They have large ears that facilitate heat loss from their Huge bodies. The African Elephant is commonly found in Kenya where it is recognized amongst five famous animals known as The Big five. The African elephant has four molars weighing about 5kg and during its life time this teeth wear out and are replaced about 4 to six times and when this is done the elephant no longer has teeth and will die of starvation. The average life span of an elephant is between 40 to 60 years. The elephant also has a second set of incisors used for digging roots, stripping the back off trees and in confrontations during mating seasons. Elephants have a sharp sense of smell, are very intelligent and it is said that they can recognize each other even after death it is with this memory that helps the matriarch during the dry season that they need to guide there heard to water holes that they used in the past.

Elephants have deep family bonds and live in tight matriarchal family groups of related females called a

herd. The heard is led by a matriarch which is the largest and oldest female amongst the Herd which

consists of 8-100 individuals depending on terrain and family size. They usually engage in social

upbringing of their young ones and When a calf is born, it is raised and protected by the whole

matriarchal herd. Males leave the family unit between the ages of 12-15 and may lead solitary lives or

live temporarily with other males.

Recent discoveries have shown that elephants can communicate over long distances by producing a sub-

sonic rumble that can travel over the ground faster than sound through air. Other elephants receive the

messages through the sensitive skin on their feet and trunks. It is believed that this is how potential mates

and social groups communicate.

These long-legged and long-necked birds are related to the storks and the ibises and favors shallow

blackish or alkaline lakes. They are numerous in east African rift valley lakes, especially Nakuru,

Bogoria, Natron and Manyara. The bill of the Flamingos is especially adapted for sieving water and mud

to get at the Algae, planktons, diatoms, and crustaceans.

The greater flamingos phoenicopterus rubber is a migrant and its range extends to the Mediterranean

region .At times, Flamingos congregates in thousands along the shores of lake Nakuru and it is one of the

world s̀ greatest spectacles to behold. Industrialization and the discharge of effluence and toxic material

in to these lakes has affected breeding of these birds, as well as limiting their food source.
