  • OFFICIAL SUPPLIER OF ALL SOFTDRINK BEVERAGES TO THE VAFA

  • Country takes crown mA balances ledger .,,Too big, too strong, too L _ :t . . . and too good!!"

li,is statement probably best sums up last Sundays~ representative match at Elsternwick Park where the;erori?.n Country Football League comprehensively beat

%-;aFA team 23 .16.154 to 8.9.57 .~;hllst the final score shows a fairly convincing oneresult and it would be fair to say we were always play-catch up football" . The VAFA side for three and a bi t

nanc rs gave their all and in the third quarter in particu-lar played an excellent quarter of crisp, committed football

~,IvU the Amateurs perhaps a sniff of victory . This effor tor could not be sustained and not long after the last

quarier began the floodgates opened and it was then justmatter of "by how much the VCFL?"

The VCFL win now takes the overall head to headwins/losses to 3 all from six encounters since 1984 so

lien we next meet in 1999 we certainly will be playing for6i ; stakes . Both bodies have already committed them-

Ives to the match and preliminary discussions havealready begun to have this next match in 1999 playedat the MCG before an AFL match .

Last Sunday's match concludes a busy year of repre-~entative football for the VAFA and leaves us with a 2

.2win /loss season with wins against South Australia andNSWAFL (senior and U19 teams June) and losses toVCFL and NSWFL (senior and C-E teams) .Last Sunday's match deta ilsVAFA 2 .3 .15 5 .4 .34 8 .7 .55 8 .9 .57VCFL 5.5 .35 11 .8 .74 12 .11 .83 23 .16.154VAFA Goals: J. The Executive would like to thank all VAFA supporterswho ventured to Elsternwick Park to support the team andin particular the Executive would like to thank the supportstaff who worked so selflessly and diligently in support ofthe players. Neville Taylor who coached the team in both

our matches this sea-son is to be congratulat-ed on his performance .The degree of profes-sionalism, planning and effort that Neville has put intothis year's campaign has earned the greatest respect fromofficials and players alike

. Hopefully we can retainAievffieis services for 1998 and beyond .

Finally a huge expression of gratitude to the clubsand club coaches who supported the VAFA by giving ustheir players for the representative football campaign thisyear . We hope they come back to you even better playersand people for the experience.

Elsternwick Park Fixture 1998 .At the end of season 1997 we reach the end of a two

year cycle where each A and B section team gave upeither 2 or 3 home matches to be played at ElsternwickPark.

Opinion is divided on the future of Sunday matches atElsternwick Park, however the current Executive is com-mitted to the Sunday "one match" concept and at the lastmeeting the following proposal was agreed to .

The proposal adopted is that for 1998 there wi ll beSunday matchdays set aside and each A section clubwill he rostered once to play one home match atElsternwick Park . A section sides not a llocated amatch on a Sunday and the 10 B section clubs wi llthen be rostered on a Saturday matchday on one occa-sion .

This will leave a number of Saturday matchdays (esti-mated to be approximately 10, in number) whereEisternwick Park wi ll be "free" . Any "free" day can beused in one of the following ways .- rest for the ground in the event of a poor winter, keep-

ing in mind we endeavour to have the ground at itsbest for the heavy finals program of matches .

    - for a second home match for A or B section clubs orapplication from a club seeking extra experience onthe ground where finals are conducted .

    - as an alternate venue for any club of the Associationexperiencing problems with securing an alternatevenue due to ground clashes.Looking forward to some great footba ll heading

towards the finals. Next week I'll stick my neck outand predict my premier for each section and relegationnominations .

Those A section footballers not fortunate to takepart in representative football last weekend

should be fresh today as the competition prepares tolift a notch with the end of the home and away sea-son just a few weeks away.REVIEW

De La Salle travelled to Trinity for a clash whichwould have an important bearing on each club's for-tunes and the D's, with a spot in the four at stakedependant on a Haileybury loss, jumped to an earlylead of a few goal which had the home side playingcatch-up footy all afternoon . At the last changeTrinity trailed by 29 points and the game looked allbut over. Not so . Inspired, the T's set about gettingback into the contest, and Peter Hannan's heartwould have been in his mouth as Trinity crept towithin 7 points, but that was as close as it got. BenMannix kicked five for the victors in a best-on-grounddisplay with help from Evans, Rennie an d Seager.

Old Xaverians hosted Old Paradians and nodoubt Nick Bourke's charges would have tread morecarefully than each side's respective ladder positionsmight suggest - Parade toppled the reigning premierin this fixture earlier in the year but any hope DaleMcCann may have held dissipated quickly as Xavsbooted 8 goals in the opening term to open up ahandy 5 goal lead . A similar margin at half-timebefore the floodgates opened to a barrage of Xavierforward play during the third quarter and an eventu-al margin of 87 points . In what has become an oddi-ty of Xavs' forward set-up, both Richardson an dBourke were among the goals on the same afternoon, sharing 12 majors with the former booting 7 .Holmes, Dillon, Ford and Wood were among a num-ber of better Xavs players while for Parade,Heffernan, Pannam and Cosgriff battled hard .

In what some described as the best clash of theseason to date, Collegians suffered a 22 point loss athome to an inspired Old Melbu rnians. The first halfyielded just seven goals between the two teams withplenty of desperate footy being played by both sidesbefore a heated, almost spiteful third term . WithThomson, Parkin and Deane-Johns battling hardthe Lions seemed to have gained the ascendancybefore the enigmatic Micah Berry brought theRedlegs right back into the contest with some fantas-tic work across half-forward and around goals . Hisgood work continued in the last term as the Redlegsadded 5 .2 to 1 .1 to snatch a hard-fought win .

The University Blues - Old Haileyburyencounter promised much in that both sides hadplenty to play for. The Blues have endured a dismalseason and Grant Williams returned just in time, perhaps, to save the Blues from relegation while

Haileybury, rightful ~rowners of fourth spo tfor most of the year, -can feel the air of D eLa Salle breathing on their necks . The Bloods lookanything but likely finalists in the first half the;rather forget ; with Featherston and Herrald on soin front of goal the Blues had skipped away tomatch-winning 56 point lead by half-time, amassi26 scoring shots to five in one half of football wSlimmon, Furphy and Fairbank all playing well

. TBloods lifted in the second half kicking 11 goals ttto lose by 21 points, but it was a case of shutting tgate after the horse has bolted .

Scotch an d St Be rnards travelled south of triver on Sunday for the clash at Elsternwick Pawith the underdogs throwing everything at tCardinals to set up a narrow victory . A belated rfrom St Bernards; alarm bells ringing at Scotch . Vthey lose their way again ?

PREVIEWXaverians host Scotch as the Cardinals prep

for the two most important matches of their seasacross the next two weeks . They won 2 from 2 earlin the year but Xavs are in good touch at the mom(and will add to Wayne Harmes' woes . OX by 22 .

St Bernards host Collegians in what is a in(important clash, for both sides, than anyone mi=have imagined a few weeks earlier. The Lions are ftering and the Bernards are firing as they battle siin A section, but Collegians will just sneak home b,points .

University host Old Melburnians with the Blueager to notch up another win and bury its relegatifears once and for all . The Redlegs over the seashave been unpredictable and will no doubt surprus all once more - Blues by 6 goals.

Promoted to A section in 1997, demoted to B sition in 1998? Is this the fate which awaits Tr

i and Parade? Unless the T's can notch up a win tod tngwT. Reid 2. Haoer

    THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1997

  • e Great Jessie Jackson said at the 1988 USConvention "Whoever said, "It's not whether yo u

win or lose that counts", probably lost". After reading

the reports from the club scribes with comments suchas "at the end of the day its only a game" or "we werealways worried about that one" or "football is a funnygame" or "its not the end of the earth", it was easy toidentify that these scribes not only probably lost butwere belted by a side below them in what could best bedescribed as a boilover

. With the ninth team (go Saints)defeating the top side, with the fifth team (go Pies)defeating the second side and the sixth team (goTherry) defeating the third side, any knowledgeablescribe would have had great difficulty in selecting thewinners of Round 14

. I have heard in recent days thatIvanhoe has its sights set on gatecrashing the BSection finals but with a draw over the last four roundsthat includes Old Brighton an d MHSOB the challengeis there for the boys from the Boulevard

. Another greatman once reminded his charges that on the footballteam you must take charge of your own destiny andnot rely on other teams to do the job for you

. SimilarlyTherry Penola must take the bit and record a few stun-ning victories to participate beyond August 23, 1997

    .

Review of Round 1 4Therry Penola kept its finals hopes alive with a

gutsy 16 point win over third placed MHSOB. In a high

standard game, Theny's free running half back line setup countless moves into the forward line . Mark Crottyat CHB was best afield with Brad Hollow on the flankproviding support. Kuret an d Reddick were other fineperformers

. MHSOB rovers in Paul Albergo and AndrewSaultry were best with the reliable but somewhat inac-curate Dan Woodley always a focus up forward .

Ivanhoe gave Ormond a football lesson (to use thescribe's own words) in a match that may have revealedsome vulnerability in the Ormond side and given a fewof the final four sides a message that the final positionsare far from settled

. The Ivanhoe mid fielders were incontrol for most of the day with Flynn, Rawley an dShane McGowan top players . Mark Seuderi with hissuperb kicking and Steve Saunders a focus in the for-ward line, the Hoes were never really in danger

    .

Ormond was best served by Craig Symes (100 games),Darren Edgell, Joy, Gilmore and Beckett .

The S KOBS journey to Central Reserve was ahappy experience for the senior side who reversed aflogging by the Nodders earlier in the season

. After aneven first half, with Mark Brady, Jim Macey and"Huddo" (welcome back) in control, the SKOBS drewclear for a 51 point victory

. For Mazenod SimonFisher, Nick Jacobs and John Le Grand were bestwhilst Matt Quirk (good young lad) worked hard at fullback in an effort that was rated highly by the Mazenodhierarchy .

The Saints wer eout of the blocks in a !1frenzy against Old ------ - -Brighton and excep tfor a spirited 15 minute period in the third quarter, tlSaints gunned the Bloods all day particularly in it,marking duels and at the centre bounces

. Big "DocNeeson in the ruck took control whilst KnobeAstapenko, M. Ryan an d Gilmore gave their opp(nents the short back and sides

. Old Brighton was leto contemplate its next match but I am sure that mucwill be gained from a loss at this stage of the season

    .

Old Ivanhoe put in a solid performance again ;Banyule to record a 57 point victory

. The "CorcoraBros .", Shadbolt (back pocket), Moore, Young anHaros gave Old Ivanhoe every reason for celebratioafter two very disappointing performances over thprevious two Saturdays

. A revival by the Bears in thlast quarter was encouraging but the Old Hoes hagone to a lead by the last change that ensured a "bi,win".Preview of Round 1 5

Banyule faces MHSOB on the rebound and woulappear to be facing another huge loss

. MHSOB to fain by 61 points .

St . Kilda South Caulfield will be hoping to recon.another surprise victory

. A close encounter woulappear certain but I'll go for the SKOBS to prevail b26 points .

The in form Ivanhoe takes on Mazenod an d musbe a big show to record its sixth win on end

. Sorry Piebut its time for me to jump abroad and select you bymargin of 21 points .

A huge effort by Therry Penola will be required tirepeat the earlier victory over Old Brighton . I'll tip th,home side to cause an upset by 17 points

    .

Ormond will need to be fired up against OkIvanhoe who will be keen to have a big say in the composition of the final four. I find it very difficult to tip thiunderdog here

. The Monds will win the day by aroun(15 points

    .

Reserves: Ormond, Mazenod, St . Kevins, MHSOBOld Brighton

  • Schweppes, C SECTIONby Russell Gould

somewhat predictable round saw results go asexpected, the only blemish on my scorecard the

win to North Old Boys in a match that could alwayshave gone either way. St . Bedes Mentone have movedinto second spot and this week face NOB's in a clashthe Tigers will look to win and grab a second chance inthe finals . St . Leo's got themselves a game clear of thebottom and although it may come down to percentage,I still think Monash will have to pull something out ofthe bag. But even Thomastown, once fighting for aplace I the four, are just a game and little percentageclear of second last spot, so they will have to win thisweek

. As far as the goalkicking is concerned I had mynumbers wrong last week, but this week there is defi-nitely only three goals separating our leaders, whom Ithink may also be leading the VAFA

. But all bodes wellfor the final few weeks, this week's clash atKeysborough particularly interesting as the winner willsot likely become our fourth finalist .Review - Round 1 5

Firstly to Mentone where a plucky Ajax hungaround before St . Bedes Mentone turned it on to comeout victors by 32 points. With the aid of a strong breezein the first term Ajax kicked three goals clear and wasshowing some promise . The Tigers though hit back inthe second and took back the lead. Ajax again had thewin in the third but could not capitalise on it until thesecond half of the quarter when they scrambledthrough a few goals to take a 2 point lead into the finalterm. But the last quarter was all Tigers, they kickednine goals to three to take the game away from a verycompetitive Ajax side whose good players includedskipper Halphen, Segal an d Rosen who kicked fivegoals . For the Tigers MacGeorge's 9

.2 was a highlight,as was the running and defence of Tully andGoodchild. A less than spectacular game in difficultconditions but the win still putting the Tigers in secondspot .

In the match of the round also played in windy con-ditions Marcellin were unable to stop a fast finishingNo rt h Old Boys who, after trailing for most of thegame, kicked 6

.5 in the last to defeat the Eagles by 14points

. A torrential wind was blowing, the Eagles hadit first and kicked six to be up by 29 points at quartertime

. Marcellin worked well into the breeze in the sec-ond and although being outscored were still up by 19points . With the win in the third Marcellin failed tocapitalise on many forward thrusts and through somesolid work the NOB's had kept the lead to just 21points at the last change

. In the last the NOB's liftedand kicked six goals to seal the game in a good teameffort

. For the Eagles who would be rueing this loss athome, O'Flynn, Theisz and stand in full fonvardKaravasillis were solid as they fell out of second spotand must now chase for that vital second chance .6

Bulleen-Temple-stowe kept their finalschances alive with a49 point win over theHampton Rovers side. With the game evenly poisedhalf time, the Bullants, playing for a finals berth neeed to come out firing . They did just that through goosolid football and were able to run away with f1match . Parris was explosive in the middle for the vitors whilst George controlled the backline

. TIBullants must now win their remaining three matchif they are to make the finals, whilst the Rovers woube looking to win at least one match to get off that riegation pile

Down at Keysborough Old Mentonians mattained their hold on fourth spot with a sound 59 poinvictory over a lacklustre Thomastown side who leadhalf time but completely faded out of the game in tlsecond half scoring just two goals to the Panthers 1The first half was a good contest with scoring veeven . The home side lead by seven points at the firchange, the Bears kicking five second quarter goalstake a one point lead at the break

. In the third aifourth quarters Panthers players who had been mising appeared and they kicked six goals to one in ea(quarter to take the game . Bournon took the mantfrom Big Ad's this week and kicked nine goals and w;best for his side with Stroud an d Twentyman wlwere both very good . For the Bears Fellows again w~best, this week helped by Alberti and Ristevs.amongst few others. A win this week will see tlPanthers back into the finals

    .

Finally, in what was quite an important match, SLeos kicked clear of the bottom with a rousing points win over a discouraged Monash Blues. Mona ;got off to a great start and with the aid of a good bree;were up by 22 points at quarter time, inaccuracy cosing them though. The Two Blues kicked six of theown in the second term, but Monash were also ablekick two to even the scores up at half time . St

. Le(managed to kick four goals into the breeze in the thinMonash kicking 1 .8 and themselves out of the game .seven goal to zero last term and nail in the coffin fordejected Monash side. Best for the Two Blues thouwere Pitcher, Major and McKenzie amongst a veihappy St. Leos outfit.

REVIEWt appears only Parkside and Old Essendon arenow in the contest for fourth spot

. Old Geelongand Beaumaris appear set for the double chance andthe Whitefriars performance would be a concern atthis stage of the season

. The gale effected nearly allresults as tiredness caused three sides kickingagainst the wind to just run out of steam

    .

Play of the Day was the great mark standingabove a flying pack by St Johns Simon Canning inthe final quarter

    .

Parkside started slowly kicking with that gale buteventually took control . Caulfield got back into thegame to be only two points down at the long break

    .

Supporters at Caulfield crossed their fingers knowingthat in the last three weeks they have not kicked agoal in the third quarter

. It wasn't to be and a greatthird quarter into the wind set up a possible victoryfor Caulfield

. The Devils played their name and forgedahead with desperate play at the ball to kick 7 goalsagainst the wind whilst inaccurate kicking byCaulfield who could manage only three form ninescoring shots . Parkside's Tessari played an inspiringcaptain's game and was again supported byMcNamara, Panjari and Harvey. Caulfield's bestwere Royals and Rosster whilst Cowlishaw finishedwith 5 goals.

Whitefriars travelled to Aquinas where the windensured a scrappy game which at half time saw thescores locked together

. The Friars kicking with thewind in the third could only manage an eleven pointbreak going into the last and although Aquinas pow-ered home to record a great victory the visitors hadtheir chances but let themselves down with poor kick-ing

. Aquinas's VanKerhoven at full back shut downRobinson whilst the onballers struggled between thetwo clubs

. Ex Friar Doeherty served his new clubwell kicking a crucial goal into the wind in the third

    .

Grierson, Tarulli, Kenny and Colliver also put inexcellent performances .

Old Essendon struggled all day against OldCamberwell who ran out of time when they finally gotgoing with the wind in the last

. Two early goals toOEGS after the last break set up a seventy point leadbut then a nine goal last quarter which saw OldCamberwell get back in the game was stopped by thesiren as they rampaged to close the gap

. OldCamberwell's work rate at the centre bounce wasexcellent but went unrewarded as OEGS back linerepelled the attacks

. The overall difference beingOEGS taller forwards

. OEGS best were Hexter,Lutterschmidt (5 goals) and Steven

. OldCamberwell's best were Scott, Hansen, Whitehead(3 goals) and Heffernan . Kent also finished with 3goals.

Old Geelong as predicted bounced back hardfrom last weeks loss to Parkside by easily accounting8

for Salesian. Salesian still reeling from the one poirloss struggled all day and although trying hard coulnot match the skill of OGS as they returned to somgood form heading towards the finals

. Salesian's be;were Tassone, Bobetic and Wiseman with Canavakicking 3 goals

    .

In the final game St Johns who were at home saltheir last chance at a finals berth come to an enwhen they were defeated by a fitter Beaumaris as thvisitors came home with a strong breeze

. The gainopened at a furious pace with neither side giving ainch and everybody being focused on the ball

. SJohns had moved to a valuable lead and in the second quarter extended that into a strong wind, Iookinthe better side

. The third quarter saw the gam.

return as the Sharks work rate lifted as St John, seemed to tire and rely on the wind to do some worlfor them

. This effort gave the Sharks a sniff, an(although St Johns tried hard they couldn't get th+ball across the line whereas Beauy's thrusts resultecin some good goals as St Johns tired badly into thiwind to see the Sharks record a comfortable 3 goawin. Best for Beaumaris was Pitts, McNicholas (4goals), Mahmoud (4 goals) and Hoyne. St John:best were Hilton, Saunderson, Koppens ancAboujaber who finished with 5 goals

    .

PREVIEWThis week Old Essendon travel to Whitefriars

i what will be the Friars last chance at getting the dou-ble chance and Old Essendon's last chance to cementfourth spot from Parkside

. A loss to either being cost-ly and a win creating a comfort zone

. SelectingWhitefriars at home is a little difficult as they havenot been as impressive in the second half of the sea-son but that ground, crowd and double chanceshould be enough to get them across the line

    .

Beaumaris take on Old Geelong at home in a pre-view of the second semi and probably the Grand Finaland certainly this weeks match of the day

. OldGeelong may be a little too strong over all asBeaumaris seem to lack depth after the sixteenthplayer as their skills drop off

. Old Geelong on theother hand switched back on last week after the lossto the devils and I predict they will be too strong inthis and the finals against Beaumaris and will gethome by 16 points .

Old Camberwell have a chance to win at homethis week against the Devils as this seasons formsuggests the Devils play two good games and thendrop their bundle

. If a spot in the four wasn't theincentive I would pick Old Camberwell but Parksidehave their sights on fourth and will win by 3 goals

special word of thanks to the Mazenod OldA Collegians for their administrative efficiency andhelpfulness when hosting the Old Carey v. ChirnsidePark match at Central Reserve on July 22nd .Everything went with a minimum of fuss, and therewas even talk about arranging other night fixtures atwhat is an excellent venue

    .

Unless something goes seriously amiss, Yarra andthe C's will meet in the 2nd semi, and Kew will playeither Parkers or Central . The Parkers have had a hor-ror run home, the C's twice last week, Kew today, thenthe Cits, followed by Yarra in the final round . If theysurvive that, they deserve the spot they currently clingto. Central must win all three against, the Sharks, theC's, and Eltham, or rely on the Parkers dropping two, with themselves losing only one

. Best of luck to both!LAST WEEK

Old Carey defeated Chi rn side Park in their longawaited Round 7 game at Central Reserve last Tuesdayweeek

. A large crowd watched a very entertaining gamein which the C's broke away to a 43 point lead in the2nd term and clung to it despite a spirited challenge bythe Parkers immediately after half time, which sawthem slam on 3 goals in the first 5 minutes

. Both sidesadapted well to the different conditions and played atop brand of footy. Tony D' Angelo, Scotty McIntosh,Mick Carusi an d Marcus Walker were outstanding forthe Parkers

. Cam Matthews was a rock at CHB for theC's, Cam Campbell and Vas were great round theground, Chad Esler was strong in the ruck, andHamish Morrison was his will o' the wisp self .

Eltham OC were outplayed by Eley Park on a daywhere the Sharks seemed to have their measure, what-ever they tried. The Turtles had good efforts fromStevie Justice across HB, Mattie Ryan, round theground, Mark Gasporotto in midfield, an d BennyHespe . on the ball.

Richmond Central couldn't cope with Yarra ValieyOB's pace and cohesion, when Yarra was able to score3 goals into the wind in the 1st term, then rattle on abagful in the 2nd to open up a substantial lead .Central battled on but it was a lost cause . Livesey-Cole an d Peterson did well in the ruck for Yarra,Scales, McVean and Peak ruled around the packs, andthe coterie of backs kept running the ball forward allday

. Central's best were HF, Chri s Andonopoulos,Greg Tate and Franki Bove on the ball, Merv andChief Shannon in a variety of roles. Hamish McAlpindid well on a wing

    .

Chirnside Parkmet Old Carey on thewind swept plains ofElsternwick Park, andbounced to a 19 point lead by the 16th minute of th,first term

. The C's picked up 2 valuable goals againsthe gale to be only 16 points down at the first changeAn 11 goal 2nd quarter from the C's proved to be th(turning point of the game, with the Parkers unable tcpenetrate the C's tight defence enough when using th(wind in the third . Paul Allat and Carlo Piccioli, orballers, and 'Doc' Ho ll iday in the ruck, came up fronthe U19's and did well for the Parkers, as did the evergreen Mick Carusi, again. The C's all contributed in l,,e,1i1 . In his first season as skipper, a dedicat-,d i,c_i committed leader "Cacca" has stood by th e

E SOUTH Tiby Ken Bremne r

    & Tom Brain

Tn arguably the worst footy conditions thus far thisseason, the Monash Gryphons maintained their

new found winning momentum, the Krushers 6 matchwinning sequence came to a halt an d Powerhouse tosome degree at least, got the 'wheels' back on track .Interest is still focussed on the 4th ladder spot and itwon't be cut and dry til the 'Fat' lady sings at around4.45pm on Saturday August 16 (Round 18).REVIEW

SENIORSA windy day isn't a visiting teams delight at any-

time let alone at Southern Road Reserve, Mentone. St

Mary's never got their act together against St Patshowever only trailed by 10 points at lemon time

. ThePatters blew 'em away in the last kicking 11 majors to1. Better players for the Saints were Jones, Chapman

and Gerstman and for St Pats, P. Su llivan, Sebire andBarr.

ANZ Rats showed great commitment and had plen-ty of the ball in their match against Powerhouse.Difference between them both was the greater confi-dence and skill up forward displayed by the House

    .

Turnovers also proved very costly for ANZ. MVP's for

the rats were Waikley, McLellan and Lovett.

Monash Gryphons jumped to an early lead(against the wind) in the first quarter, then went onwith the job in the 2nd

. Nearly a repeat performance inthe 2nd half saw the Gryphs home comfortably by 45points

. The Coaches message is getting through at theGryphs camp and they will give a very good account ofthemselves in the remaining games. No excuses fromthe Hunters but they weren't well served with thedreaded 'Flu'

. Best for Monash Gryphons were Barrie,Killmister and Gilchrist and for Glenhuntly, Miller,Rossiter and O'Donne ll.

Due to a very good first quarter in a strong wind .Elsternwiek setup a very competitive day of footy fortheir opponents, Peninsula . In a confusing and frus-trating day for both camps the Pirates ended up justcoming out on top at days end

. For Elsternwick, it wasat the very least, a much improved effort on recent per-formances

. Best for the Wicks were Lyons andMurphy and for the Pirates. Sharpin, Franks an dDentry .

For the first time this season. Southbank found

itself in arrears at lemon time (10 points). Oakleigh's

homework had paid dividends and they led narrowly atquarter time only to see the Bankers claw back theascendancy by the long interval

. A great 3rd term putthe Krushers in the box seat . To their credit,Southbank showed great character to not only save thegame, but win it handsomely (at least on the score-board)

. Best for Southbank were Nudge, who wasinspirational. Mirrors and Bubba and for Oakleigh .14

Justin Knopp was solid all day, Damon Rubery wa;great ruck rover, Marcus Wood until injured with sIcial mention to Pat Heverin.RESERVES

The Saints ensured their finals spot by puttiaway the Patters by 33 points

. Peninsula in a can by 64 points against theWickers. Southbank wit

stood all Oakleigh's effort, and won comfortably bypoints . The Hunters tasted success by 17 points at texpense of Gryphons an d Powerhouse, too strong Ithe Rats by 73 points

    .

PREVIEWSt Mary's can be relied upon, especially at hon

to pack too many guns for Elsternwick. KB has :

hesitation in selecting the Saints by 40 points. TB

tipping a minor upset here. I feel the sting may have gone from the Saints season and they may

looking to the ressies finals which puts the Wickswith a big chance one which they will take .

ANZ Albert Park will struggle in their clas hPeninsula. The Pirates simply have too much claand KB can't see them dropping this one

    . Pirates by'points

. The Pirates must keep winning to keep tVultures away, and whilst the Rats will be buoyedthe reunion of some of their legends at the lunch itwill not be enough to get them home

    .

It's a safe bet that the Krushers will have doitheir homework on St Pats as they had done againthe Bankers . KB reckons the Oakleigh lads are gastudents and will get the points, only just though, by'snags'

. Barry Alexander will be a well travelled mbefore the end of this season he obviously does t.sums well

. Big match for both clubs this one TB wimpressed with the Oaks last week but feels that tlVultures may be just too strong on the day

    .

An air of confidence purveying from the Mona.,

Gryphons camp this week for their clash wiSouthbank. KB is extremely confident that the Gryplwill put up a mighty effort, however I still reckon on tlBankers to win well by 39 points. Gryphs Guru's PeUBurke and Tim Lee are confident of a good showiltoday, as put across the airwaves of 88

.3 but try ~they might Mr Brain feels that the Bankers will juhave a bit too much talent and should win well

    .

Powerhouse have enormous incentive in theclash with Glenhuntly

. The House are well aware thone hiccup could spell disaster. It won't happen arKB picks the House to win by 21 points

. Glenhuntwill certainly take the game right up to the House wlif they wish to play finals football must win today arI think that will be the case .

    THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 19

  • RESERVES: St Mary's shouldn't be extended bylqicks and will get home 30 point victors . The Rats

c; rou ,h [ will continue to extend when the Pirates scut-

lilem by 60 points . Oakleigh Krushers can be;ecled to bounce back with a vengeance against th e

Patters and knock 'em over by 40 points . MonashGryphons will no doubt serve matters up to5outhbank, however their efforts will count for very litti, . ,,-,th the Bankers expected to win by 48 points .P oW arhouse may just prove a little too good on the day;of dle Hunters and get to the post 12 point ahead.
