LWMA Board of Trustees Appoints Dr. Roy W. Berwick
10th President of Lyman Ward Military Academy
Dr. Berwick, who attended Lyman Ward as a cadet in the 1960s, brings
more than 20 years of experience in the military school arena, at both the secondary
and collegiate levels, since his retirement from the U. S. Army in 1993. He has held
senior leadership positions as president of two military secondary schools -- Millers-
burg Military Institute in Kentucky and Oak Ridge Military Academy in North
Carolina; as executive vice president and chief of staff at St. John's Northwestern Military Academy in
Wisconsin, where he established a student-focused post-graduate program; as vice president and aca-
demic dean at Massanutten Military Academy in Virginia; as vice president for cadet development and
senior Army instructor at Oak Ridge; and as commandant of cadets at St. John's Northwestern. He also
has taught at least one class in American history, government, or law at each institution he served.
Dr. Berwick previously served as chair of the military science department and professor of mili-
tary science at Northern Kentucky University. He has served as an adjunct instructor of history at the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and as an adjunct instructor of law and government at
Shenandoah University in Virginia.
A native of Kentucky, Dr. Berwick is a retired soldier. While on active duty, he served in the
Military Police Corps in every leadership position from squad leader to battalion executive officer. He
later served in the Judge Advocate General Corps as a lawyer, and was a liaison officer for the U. S.
Army ROTC Cadet Command at the Pentagon in Washington, D. C.
A distinguished military graduate of the U. S. Army ROTC program at the Creighton University,
Dr. Berwick holds a M.A. degree in history, a Ph.D., and a J.D. degree from Creighton University College
of Law. He is a member of the Kentucky and Nebraska Bar Associations. He also is a graduate of the U.
S. Army Command and General Staff College.
Dr. Berwick is the author of numerous publications, and has been active in a variety of civic and
community organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America and the Civil Air Patrol.
Dr. Berwick and his wife Janice are the parents of a grown daughter, Meredith, who graduated
from a military prep school. They live in the President's Home across the street from the LWMA campus
in Camp Hill.

LWMA Graduate Returns
Hunter Smart from Tallassee, Alabama
graduated from Lyman Ward in 2000. He is
a former Army Infantry Captain and holds a
Masters Degree in Counseling from Troy
State University. Hunter recently viewed
the video of Cadet Tristan Sanders inter-
viewing our new President, Dr. Roy Ber-
wick. He felt compelled to visit LWMA and
offer to give back to the school in any way that he could. Captain Smart
and his wife visited the campus on August 27, 2013. A TAC position had
become available that day, he was interviewed and hired on the spot as
the TAC Officer of Bravo Company. It just so happens that his company
while attending the Academy was Bravo. Lyman Ward is thrilled to
have one of their own come full circle. Welcome aboard, Captain Smart.
ALUMNI TO SPONSOR LWMA RESTORATION PROJECTS
An idea emerged from the troops during a discussion at the Alumni
Muster held on campus in July 2013. In talking about ways that
Alumni could help the school, it was mentioned that many alums
have skills, machinery, or supplies that could be used to benefit the
Academy. With volunteers, donations, fundraisers, gifts-in-kind, a
little elbow grease, time, and labor many things could be accom-
plished. It was decided to begin a Restoration Project Fund.
Contributions to the Restoration Fund are designated to be used
only for projects which will benefit Lyman Ward Military Academy.
All projects must first be approved by the Officers of the Alumni
Association and the President of the Academy. The fund will only be
used for the items necessary to complete each project. Donations of
material, labor, and machinery for a project will gladly be accepted.
Each project will be completed before the next is begun. No individ-
ual alumni will be paid from this fund. All work by alums is strictly
volunteer. Each project will be headed by one person to be ap-
pointed by the Officers of the Alumni Association. The project will
begin when all funds necessary to complete the project are received.
The first designated project is the restoration of the Outdoor Rifle
Range. John Nixon „80 is heading this project. All funds have been
received thanks to many generous alumni donors.
The rebuilding of the Outdoor Rifle Range is scheduled for the week-
end of September 14th. All alumni are encouraged to join in and
help with this project in any way that you can. For more informa-
tion about the project and what might be needed, go to Facebook and
visit the page LWMA Campus Renewal Projects. John Nixon is the
POC. You may also call the Alumni Center at (256) 896-2715. How-
ell Hall will be available for those who wish to stay on campus. Ca-
dets will be on campus; therefore, strict guidelines are required.
All funds will be handled through the Alumni Association. Dona-
tions can be mailed to The Alumni Association of SII/LWMA or paid
through the Alumni Online Store at www.lwalumni.org.
