The Alternative für Deutschland (AfD): A Case Study in European Right-wing Populism
Founded in 2013, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) garnered 12.6% of the vote in Germany’s 2017 federal elections, making it the third largest party in the Bundestag. Yet how to classify the party ideologically has sparked lively debate among politcal scientists. By offering a systematic analysis of the AfD’s ideology and how that ideology is expressed in practice, this presentation argues that the AfD is best categorized as a populist, radical-right party, alongside European peers like Austria’s Freedom Party (FPÖ) and France’s National Front (FN).
