8 YORKSHIRE POST TUESDAY DECEMBER 11 2007 ADVERTISING SPOTLIGHT Watson Burton Suzanna Bain WATSON Burton has been established for nearly 200 years and has a solid reputation as one of the leading law firms in the North. Until recently, the only offices were in Newcastle but, as testimony to the firm’s unprecedented growth and progressive outlook, bases have now been set up in Leeds and London, too. A huge publicity campaign and much fanfare surrounded the opening of the Leeds operation in June 2005, not least because creating a new practice in such a highly competitive city is a hugely ambitious and bold move, one the sceptics said was misguided and foolhardy. But thanks to the passion and dedication of the partners at the helm of the Leeds office – and their extended teams – the client list has flourished and now includes such high profile names as Countrywide plc, Minorplanet Systems plc, IDS plc, Austin Reed plc, Braime plc, Freudenberg, Barrett Steel, American Golf, Safestyle UK, Icelandic Group, Clugston Group and Connells, flying firmly in the face of the doubters and sceptics who said Watson Burton’s Leeds Office would never be a success. So what is it about these lawyers and the way they work that sets them apart from the rest? It’s clear the moment you meet Andrew Walker, Lester Wilson and Martin Smith that they are not only totally dedicated to what they do but have an infectious energy and enthusiasm that’s hard to beat. Add to this their approachable, friendly manner and unswerving commitment to always put the client first and maintain direct, personal contact and it’s easy to see why they’re taking Yorkshire’s corporate finance community by storm. They have certainly tackled the Leeds legal establishment head-on and challenged the established Leeds legal hierarchy with considerable success. Intrigued to hear about how they gained such a diverse range of quality clients, I ask what it was like laying the foundations of a fledgling business and whether starting from scratch was a help or a hindrance. “The majority of law firms in Leeds have been around for hundreds of years so Watson Burton’s decision to launch a new venture meant working on an entirely blank canvas and building the business up,” explain Walker and Wilson. “Daring to be different was inevitably going to get tongues wagging but thanks to the support, systems and know-how of our Newcastle and London offices, we quickly got an effective infrastructure up and running and now have an impressive track record that proves our critics wrong.” A case in point is the Countrywide plc £1.15bn take private by Apollo Management International LLP, for which Watson Burton’s corporate finance lawyers advised a 150- strong management team on management equity investment. Also for Countrywide plc was a proposed £970m 3i-backed management buyout, led by Andrew . Without wanting to highlight deals, the list of goes on including significant deals for Geo. Adams & Sons, IDS plc and Brill Properties Limited, adding weight to the argument that Walker, Wilson and Smith are more than capable of handling a wide range of clients and transactions, no matter how diverse and complex. Perhaps another reason for such speedy success is that only partners who understood the local scene were allowed to join the fold, to make the most of their in-built strategic knowledge of the local marketplace and the relationships they already had. So at a time when many larger firms have stepped out of Yorkshire to concentrate on global work, Watson Burton is maintaining a superb focus, allowing it to truly plug into servicing quality clients across the region. Yet that doesn’t mean the county’s borders create boundaries – quite the contrary, in fact, with a number of clients from further afield being referred and engaging the team on the strength of reputation alone. Keen to delve deeper into this success story, I decide to find out what really makes this crack team of down-to-earth professionals tick. I want to know what drives them, what inspires them and ultimately what makes everything they touch so consistently turn to gold. It’s clear one of the main reasons these key players love their jobs so much is being able to fashion new ways of working, rather than being shackled to stuffy old traditions and pointless protocol. Walker explains: “There’s something very energising about the process of moulding everything from the grass roots upwards. Gathering specialists from different backgrounds when the Leeds office was starting out means we now have a vast wealth of experience and knowledge and can deliver services in a fresher, newer, more innovative way than our competitors. “Seamlessly bringing together a collection of like-minded professionals from different disciplines has not only benefited existing clients but also attracted new ones, which in turn has allowed us to deliver very real results in a relatively short space of time.” Smith and Wilson agree, saying a key reason for them signing up to the Leeds venture was to be a part of “back to basics lawyering” where partners work on deals right the way through from evolution to completion, rather than delegating all the work and never being seen again by clients. “There’s more partner involvement here than in other firms and the fact we’re local, rather than national or international, means customers don’t end up paying through the nose for an inflated cost base,” explainsWalker. Indeed, The Legal 500 describes the team as “very commercial in their opinions” and their clients are pleased to find “the team that pitches for the work does the work” with “immense hard work and enthusiasm”. Add to this what Martin Smith calls “the pioneering entrepreneurial spirit” – and the sense that what you achieve is a direct result of your own effort “instead of having little influence over shaping things and rarely getting to see the outcome of your own ambition and drive” – and you have a recipe for a happy workforce that’s always prepared to go the extra mile. This level of commitment is undoubtedly recognised and appreciated by clients – many of whom are so impressed they will remain loyal for years to come – as is the firm’s determination to provide that personal touch, rather than let deals roll along without a name or face to put to them. For Lester Wilson, the satisfaction of “building something unique” is a key motivator as is “seeing other members of the team grow, develop and blossom” and when I speak to David Bowden, Head of Commercial Property at Leeds, all these sentiments are echoed through and through. David explains that to keep up- to-date with developments in his field he runs his own practice, because he firmly believes property lawyers risk becoming institutionalised and a mere function of the corporate department if they don’t keep their finger on the market’s pulse by maintaining direct contact. “Watson Burton’s work is high profile and high value, as are its clients, which you get to know well because it’s such a partner- led service,” he tells me. “I thoroughly enjoy being involved in transactions from beginning to end and engaging with them in this hands-on way. It’s refreshing, rewarding and motivating to work with such a well-bonded team.” The firm’s ability to see the bigger picture and pull together expertise across other core specialist disciplines is a big selling point, as Bowden explains: “It’s vital the corporate department has a strong property department to support it, as many clients are important to both, such as Barrett Steel. But this goes for tax, employment, commercial and pensions, too, right the way across the Leeds, London and Newcastle offices.” Having gained an insight into the minds of these high-flying individuals and learnt more about the contribution they’ve made to the success of the Leeds office and quelling speculation about its strength, stability and potential, I’m eager to find out what the future holds. “The Leeds office is performing very well, ahead of target, so we’re going to maintain our approach of being genuinely client-led and will be recruiting people across all three offices who share this ethos,” says Andrew Walker. “Now we have an established client base and team, we will be building further on our key disciplines of corporate and property in particular,” he continues. “Having proved our Yorkshire operation is not only sustainable but very profitable and quashed any negative rumours we are well- placed to deal with any downturn in the short to medium term and are confident we’ll continue moving onwards and upwards.” Wilson concludes: “At Watson Burton we’ve got the right blend of grey hairs and youthful exuberance – there’s simply no substitute for experience married with enthusiasm.” So what can I tell you about this prestigious law firm’s Leeds operation that I haven’t already mentioned? One thing’s certainly for sure; not only is it here to stay, it’s also a force to be reckoned with. A legal force to be reckoned with EXPERTS LEADING THE WAY The great success of the Watson Burton Leeds Corporate team has been complemented across several key legal disciplines at the City Square-based practice, with partners in employment, education, tax insurance and family making a strong impact in the Yorkshire market and beyond. Dr John McMullen, one of the UK’s leading authorities on employment and an acknowledged education specialist, has firmly established the firm’s presence in its chosen markets. A wide range of new clients across commerce, industry and the public sector have followed John and the firm has developed strong links with key bodies such as the Association of University Administrators (AUA), which the firm sponsors and ACAS . Professional negligence and tax law expert Karen Eckstein has also made her mark with a special commendation at the UK Tax Lawyer of The Year awards in the summer, while Head of Family Lyn Ayrton has acted in a number of recent high-profile, high- value divorce cases. The fact we’re local means customers don’t pay through the nose for an inflated cost base. TOP TEAM: Watson Burton’s partners, from left, Martin Smith,Andrew Walker and Lester Wilson.
