To be independent and provide energy for oneself: Roland and Hel-ga Mayer wanted to make their landscape gardening business in Villingendorf, a small town near the Black Forest in southwestern Germany, as independent of the utility company as possible. As far

as they were concerned, only a PV system with storage unit from KACO new energy could be considered as a long-term, cost-optimised solution. By means of solar mo-dules on the roof of the house, a solar car-

port in front of the house and a storage system they generate their own electricity, supply the business with it and back up the business data of the IT system with a solar-based emergency power supply in the event that the public grid fails.

Solar power with storage for self-consumption: "Far-reaching inde-pendence from electricity price increases, secure energy provision, simultaneously CO2-neutral energy and less burden on the environ-ment were very important decision criteria for us when deciding which PV-storage system to purchase", commented Mr. Mayer. Planned and built according to their needs on the company pre-mises, the system is now able to provide clean energy, to store it and to feed in. Fuelling with solar power and parking it – twice the benefit. As a small highlight, the parking space has been turned into a power station. The trendy, "light" design of the carport awning facilitates electricity generation.

The portion of self-consumed solar power can even be increased by the storage system: the blue-planet gridsave eco 5.0 TR1 serves as an optimum extension to the existing photovoltaic array. The combination of PV system with battery storage makes it possible to use a higher portion of the self-generated electricity on site. In that way, the home and the business can reduce the amount of electricity procured from the grid, together with the associated costs in the long-run. The electri-city produced by the solar power system is stored temporarily in the cellar and can be used after sundown, for example. With the addition of the battery storage it is possible to increase self-con-sumption and thus increase the amount of self-sufficiency even more, without the inhabitants having to change any of their usual habits.

On top of that, the intelligent energy manager can provide an almost uninterrupted emergency power supply if the public grid should be hit by a power cut. In that way, basic electrical supply is se-cured even in the event of public grid disturbances.

FMS Computers was founded in 1980 in Bad Kissingen by Bruno Kriener. On 10.12.2008 the first German Apple Store opened in Munich. At the same time, FMS Computers were specialising in Apple products.

Software solutions are not quite enough to secure the valuable data at FMS. The basic prerequisite is the effective hardware protection of the computer primarily from power imbalances and power cuts.

Hardware and software can be protected ef-fectively against irretrievable losses by me-ans of uninterrupted power supply (UPS). "We need such a UPS for our server – and the storage unit complements that well“, said Mr. Kriener. "At the moment I consider the risks of power cuts in Germany to be

limited, however, there were a few last year. The PV-based emer-gency power supply ensured trouble-free operation meaning that we did not suffer from any operational disturbances." Explaining his decision, Mr. Kriener said: "I was looking for a true three-phase system and came across the KACO new energy blue-planet gridsave eco 5.0 TR1. I particularly liked the exceptional advice that I was given in advance, the chance of attending pro-duct training courses and the good experience that I had had with KACO new energy support in previous projects.“ Apart from its

The businessman also considers self-consumption to be an additional benefit which is optimised by the AC-coupled blueplanet gridsave eco. Self-sufficiency is not however his prime aim: "Above all else I was curious to find out how such a sys-tem could be integrated into our office premises and to find out what portion of self-consumption we could achieve.“ The result: The clear majority of the PV electricity is used directly and in sunny months the self-sufficiency climbs to over 80 per-cent. The PV system has a 26.4 kW output and the battery capacity is 65 kWh.

Sunshine facilitates education – education facilitates development.PV storage system for the grid-remote energy supply of a Nepalese school.

KACO new energy off-grid experts started off on a very particular expedition into the Himalayan mountains at the beginning of May 2014. With the aim of constructing a basic electricity supply and hence, improving the living conditions of the people living there, the expedition erected a photovoltaic array combined with a sto-rage system. That was the first system of its kind at an altitude of almost 4,000 metres.

For their “light and electricity“ project, the ARAGUA association took a special decision to embark on the Lo Kunphen school pro-ject in Lo Manthang. There were absolutely no energy facilities in the school or in the boarding area, meaning that they required urgent assistance.

Jörg Mangold, ARAGUA's president said: “I was personally very impressed by the landscape in Lo Manthang. Even more impressive

were the simplicity of the living conditions and the poverty of the population, which often gets in the way of a regular school education for the children. The poverty

and remoteness causes health care restrictions which we cannot even begin to imagine in our daily lives.“

The ARAGUA association was founded on 12.04.2008: Its purpose is to promote general bodily and mental health, in addition to pro-moting age-appropriate education for children, teens and adults in

regions where such primary care is not sufficiently taken care of.

The blueplanet gridsave eco 5.0 TR1 battery in-verter serves as the centre point of the off-grid system. In combination with a PV inverter, the AC-coupled device enables storage of solar ener-gy in external batteries for use later on. As soon as the energy is discharged from the batteries, the blueplanet gridsave eco establishes a stable single-phase home grid and therefore closes the 24 hour solar provision loop. 6.5 kW output from the PV system and a 15 kWh battery capacity pro-vide lighting for classrooms and dormitories.

The system has been running without a hitch sin-ce mid-2014: That is a sure sign that the compo-nents were well selected for the harsh environ-mental conditions. They withstood the bumpy transportation without sustaining any damage and continued to perform their duties after the devastating earthquake in Nepal in April 2015.

The TARGET association is the human rights organisation founded by Annette and Rüdiger Nehberg, which defends women’s rights. Defying building and bureaucratic hurdles with great perseverance and tenacity, the association built a childbirth clinic among the Afar people in the middle of Ethiopia’s Danakil desert.

Careful use of natural resources and minimum environmental im-pact were crucial pre-considerations for TARGET. From this ecologi-cal point of view alone, solar energy is preferable in comparison to

diesel as an alternative. Moreover, purchasing diesel is expensive and is a recurring task. Par-ticularly in remote, sun-rich regions, the price advantages of locally-generated solar energy lend themselves as an ideal replacement for conventional diesel generators: photovoltaic can be easily integrated into existing systems, contributes the lion’s share to energy provision and is independent of rising oil prices.

The clinic’s photovoltaic system has a 60.5 kilowatt output and it was complemented by a 109 kWh storage system. During the day the system supplies electricity directly to the electrical appliances in the clinic and the operating theatre, as well as to the kitchen and laundry. Excess power is stored and, when required, is taken from the batteries to contribute towards the electricity supply at night.

The automatic energy supply management is per-formed by the bidirectional blueplanet gridsave eco battery inverter. Three of the 20 kilowatt ver-sion are deployed in the clinic. These, together with the solar inverters and the distribution box are housed in a well-ventilated container. TARGET attaches enormous importance on the operating theatre being ready for use at any and all times. If the solar energy reserve becomes critical, then it switches the diesel gene-rator on as a back up to enable continued use of the operating theatre.
