I recently came across a box of old childhood photographs that got my mind racing on a trip down memory lane. Remembering how, as a child, everything still seemed possible, but also simultaneously impossible as we felt so small in this big world of ours. At the tender age of seven I was still running around and worshipping cartoon super heroes, aspiring to be just like them. It is also at this stage of our lives that we start thinking about what we want to be when we grow up. A clear memory always comes to mind when people ask me this question - I see the image of my uncle in his supreme Navy uniform. My ultimate dream at this tender age was to join the Navy or Air force - ultimately, I wanted to fly… It is a little known fact that, as we grow older (bigger), our dreams tend to get smaller (less extravagant, if you will) as we mature. Our scope of life changes as we become more informed, skilled and street smart to eventually make better decisions on what we are really equipped to achieve or be “when we get big”, given our upbringing, talents and available resources. My growth process took a slight turn as I became fascinated by music and decided to start studying BMUS after school. I became a musician, thriving at what I did. Performing at various events and weddings, I got introduced to the hospitality industry. This effectively lead to me becoming a businessman alongside Aleit. Looking back at my life process, I evaluated my initial interest of flying against that of being a musician and businessman and came to the following conclusion: Although I am not literally flying (apart from my monthly flying lessons!), our business is towering, soaring….flying! Without realizing it, I made my childhood dream come true and I don’t even have to wear the uncomfortable Navy uniform – I can do it in style!

KIRSTY HARTMANN

You are one of the ambitious new coordinators at The Aleit Group. Why did you choose a career in weddings?

I have always had a passion for romance; the idea of two people coming together and getting married is such a beautiful occasion. The flowers, candles and the unity has always appealed to the romantic in me. A wedding is a reason for people to come together in celebration of love, with beautiful sparkling wines and exquisite food – everything I love. There are so many moments to look forward to – the tears in the groom’s eyes as he sees his bride walk down the aisle, the romantic first dance and the heartfelt speeches.

What has been your most rewarding moment at The Aleit Group?

The recent high profile corporate event that I coordinated was definitely the most rewarding project I have worked on to date. Weddings require a lot more work to organise as it incorporates so much more detail and tradition, however this event was just on such a huge scale. It was like nothing I, or the company for that matter, had ever experienced before. Having to please so many different people simultaneously, almost functioning on a higher level, was a very fulfilling achievement.

Being a graduate of The Aleit Academy, what is your advice to someone who wants to follow a career in events management?

It is imperative to have exceptional organisational skills, undying patience and a very outgoing nature, but not overly so. You definitely need to include elements into your daily routine that make you happy and that offer a creative outlet. Whether it be art, a good breakfast or going to the gym, a happy coordinator is a productive one. If you are contemplating a career in the events industry you have to look at how attending

events make you feel. Do you look at a finished product and think; “how could have improved that?” Or do you constantly look around for new inspiring ideas? An interest in events is essential!

The best advice I can give is to experience it first hand in order to know what you are letting yourself in to. Events management is a very specific industry, and requires a very specific persona.

How do you cope juggling a serious relationship and your demanding workload?

I am very lucky to have a mature and understanding boyfriend. I hate to be cheesy, but he is the yin to my yang. I’m colourful and creative and he’s the scientist, always interested in numbers. We truly bring out the best in each other. We’ve been dating since the end of grade 11, so we’ve been through the biggest life changes together. He has been there throughout my entire journey as an events coordinator, and understands the demands of the job. I love that he has his own life. He has his own interests and passions, and we can appreciate each other. Most importantly, he loves my food, and I love to cook for him.

People often perceive Aleit to be an extremist perfectionist. How does this affect your work?

I find Aleit to be demanding when necessary. He will push you that extra mile when you are exhausted, and the results are usually incredible. He will find that roof that needs an extra piece of draping – he will push you to do it and it will look a 100 times better without costing you a cent. Aleit is always open to reasoning and new ideas. He always has an answer and an opinion, which is the essence of creativity. His ability to create a conversation around something small makes one feel completely comfortable in his presence. Finally, he is honest – sometimes too honest, but this attributes to him being the industry leader that he is.

This month we had the immense pleasure of chatting to project manager, style guru and all round creative whizz Kirsty Hartmann, The Aleit Group’s exciting new coordinator. Beautifully styled on a chaise lounge in a gorgeous summer dress, Kirsty told us a bit more about the person behind the coordinator.

| ALICIA & JOHAN //WEDDINGS

On the 17th of November 2012, two beautiful people married at Nooitgedacht Estate. Californian born Alicia, and Johan, a purebred South African, had a wedding day inspired by simple and elegant vintage styling. The gorgeous setting of Nooitgedacht, found at the end of an avenue of oak trees, provided the idyllic and intimate atmosphere the couple were after.

A warm sunny day started off with a hair and make-up team of massive proportions arriving in the early hours of the morning for a wedding party sporting nine Bridesmaids, six Groomsmen, a Flower Girl and a tiny Ring Bearer. The ceremony was held in the rustic Italian inspired Chapel with a rose petal aisle leading up to an ornate altar filled with candles. Guests were then directed to the pre-dinner drinks area where they could delight in canapés and cocktails under the shade of big oak trees whilst enjoying a game of croquet or boules.

For dinner, the reception area was transformed with candle light, chandeliers and the perfume of fresh flowers. Guests enjoyed a three course dinner followed by an after party with a whiskey bar for the gentlemen, while the charismatic 5fm DJ Rob Forbes kept the dance floor packed for the rest of the night. The celebrations ended at 2am with the guests departing all laughs and smiles.

How did you experience your wedding day?

The wedding day was the most wonderful day of our lives. It was absolutely perfect to share such a special day with our family and friends. Everything from getting ready with our best friends to seeing one another for the first time during the ceremony, to our first dance, the delicious food, the hilarious photo booth shots and rocking out on the dance floor.... everything was incredible. We didn’t want the night (or morning rather :) ) to end.

How did you meet?

We both work for Accenture and after Johan transferred from the Joburg office to New York, we met on a project at Nike in Portland. From the moment we saw one another for the first time we knew there was something special. Our first 6 months together were in Portland and it will always be a very special place for us both.

What was your best moment of the day?

This is almost impossible to answer. :) Thinking back on the day, every second was so special. If we had to choose, exchanging vows and our rings and officially starting our lives together was an incredible moment. Then, just celebrating after dinner, seeing all of our friends and family come together and enjoying themselves was unforgettable. Tell us more about your experience working with us:

For us, the ability of this team to translate our vision into something so personal and perfect on the day of our wedding was wonderful. Also, working with all the service providers and pulling everything together so seamlessly without us having to worry or stress about anything was very much appreciated. We often heard from other couples how stressful and hectic it is to plan a wedding but with this team everything felt very easy and was so enjoyable! Beyond that, every person within The Aleit Group and all those that were recommended were fantastic people and such a pleasure to work with.

Tell us more about the honeymoon:

It was amazing! :) We headed off for three weeks and started our married lives together with a great challenge - climbing Kilimanjaro! After the climb we headed off to the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengetti for a week and then finished it off with a week on the beaches of Zanzibar. As wonderful as it was to have everyone we loved together for the few weeks leading up to the wedding, we were both very excited to spend this time together. What advice can you give to other Bridal couples tying the knot soon?

Enjoy being engaged! Take your time to plan - a longer engagement allows you to do a little at a time so it doesn’t become overwhelming and it is a true reflection of you both. Invest in a wedding planner - go with Aleit, his team is the best! Take everything in on the day – don’t allow anything to stress you out. Everyone is there because they love you. Cherish every second of having all of the people you love most together. It is the happiest day of your life.

One of our all-time favourite couples, Amelia and Harry, celebrated their wedding at Grande Provence in the Franschhoek Valley in April 2012. It was an intimate affair, with their closest family and friends witnessing their love and admiration for each other.

It was a long time coming, since the initial concept for their wedding was discussed in 2010 already! Since then, a wonderful friendship has grown between us and we wish them only the best in their life together.

All eyes were on Amelia as she walked down the cobblestone aisle in the garden on her father’s arm. Harry was beaming with pride, when he saw his gorgeous bride for the first time. They exchanged vows underneath two huge oak trees and the celebrations started as soon as they said I Do!

Guests were treated to an extensive menu, with deliciously prepared food by the Grande Provence chef. Two long tables ensured a very festive atmosphere, with an opulent flower installation overhead and candlelight setting the mood.

As Harry and Amelia opened the dance floor for the after party, delectable cake pops were brought out for dessert. Guests boogied the night away with the famous DJ Darren Rose at the decks.

It was the perfect evening and the perfect start to a marriage made in heaven!

How did you meet?

We met, rather embarrassingly, at one of the cheesiest nightclubs in south London (Infernos) back in 2005. At the time I was working in Guernsey but was in London for the weekend to celebrate my sister’s 30th birthday. Harry came to meet his brother, whose wife is best friends with my sister, and we got chatting. With a little matchmaking from our siblings and after few months of texting and emailing across the Channel, I moved to London. We went out on a date that July and have been together ever since! Five and a half years later came the proposal. We were in Lake Como in the sunken garden of our Relais

biding our time before the restaurants opened. Harry was acting a bit odd, which I dismissed as hunger, and he randomly asked me if I would like a present. If you know Harry like I do, a ‘present’ isn’t always a pleasant thing so I cautiously replied “it depends what it is”. He knelt down on one knee, handed me a velvet pouch with a beautiful ring inside and asked me to marry him! Anyone who knows me well knows I dither when making any kind of decision, but this was by far the easiest I’ve ever had to make and of course I said yes!

How did you experience your wedding day?

We fell in love with Grande Provence on one of our first trips to Cape Town and both being lovers of art, sculpture and good food and wine, it seemed the perfect venue for our big day.

Our ceremony took place under two large Oak trees on the lawn in front of the Jonkershuis with a view of the magnificent Franschhoek Mountains as a backdrop. White parasols hung from the trees at jaunty angles together with our handwritten notes to guests attached to the leaves. We loved ‘Rev Kev’ who gave a very funny and heart-warming sermon which summed up our relationship perfectly.

Pre-dinner drinks took place on the lawn where guests were serenaded by the soulful voice of Soi-Soi and Gary Deacon’s band, whilst the drinks flowed and the dancing started early!

Low lighting illuminated the restaurant whilst green and white floral arrangements were placed in glass and wooden vases along two long banquet tables with large overhead floral arrangements and wooden chandeliers. The atmosphere was superb and made for a wonderfully relaxed and intimate wedding feast!

Once guests had enjoyed their dinner, we all moved through to the gallery where the cutting of the cake, handing out of the cake pops and the first dance took place. DJ Darren ensured that guests were entertained late into the night.

What was your best moment of the day?

It’s so hard to single out one best moment as the whole day was magical and full of special moments, but herewith a few that spring to mind:

− My first special moment happened during the morning at Burgundy Bourgogne when my mum and dad came into my room with a cup of tea and sat on my bed for a chat to see how I was feeling. I was so excited but all of a sudden very emotional (Thank goodness for getting the tears over and done with before lovely Alicia Buckle did my makeup!!). I had written a funny poem for Harry but wasn’t sure if I had the guts to read it, so I read it to my parents who gave me the encouragement I needed. Simonè, our coordinator, printed it out for me at the last minute and slipped it under my seat just as the speeches were starting. After a glass of bubbly for Dutch courage I was good to go!

− Walking down the aisle with my Dad and seeing all of our guests who had travelled so far to be there for us made me feel so happy. Seeing Harry standing waiting under the trees actually gave me the giggles – I was so excited and couldn’t wait to get down the aisle and marry him!

− The pop of champagne corks as we said ‘I do’ and walking out of the Jonkershuis after signing of the register to a shower of white petals. Our guests went to town with the confetti – Harry received a handful in the face whist I received a handful down the front of my dress, which made us all roar with laughter!

− The food and wine was impeccable! As our guests were travelling so far it was really important to us to give them a feast to remember - Chef Darren certainly did not disappoint! The four course meal was unforgettable. Guests especially enjoyed the springbok tartar and chocolate self-saucing pudding, yum!

− The private moments we had together when we went off with Jean-Pierre for our couple’s photographs. It allowed us a few moments of time-out and we were able to look on our guests having fun from afar!

− The first dance. We danced to Etta James: At Last, and although we were a little wobbly on our feet, it was definitely one of the most romantic parts of our day.

The whole day was perfect and we cannot thank the Aleit Team enough!

Tell us more about your experience with us:

From the first Skype call from London to SA we knew we wanted to work with the Aleit team as we found their approach so refreshing. We bonded instantly and booking Aleit and his team was an easy call.

Harry is usually laid back and I’m usually the stressed one, but on the run up to the wedding, our roles completely reversed. When we arrived in Cape Town and met with Simonè and Aleit it was clear that they had every single detail under control. This allowed us to relax and enjoy our wedding and the preceding days to the fullest.

Aleit and Simonè are both truly remarkable people. They both worked patiently alongside us for a full year interpreting our ideas and turning them into the most beautiful, intimate and relaxed wedding we could ever have hoped for. During this time they treated us like friends as opposed to clients and always went the extra mile to ensure we were happy. We were filled with confidence that our day would be spectacular and it certainly was! It was an absolute pleasure to work with such an extraordinary and professional team. Words cannot convey how grateful we are to the team for creating the most memorable first day of our married life. Thank you!!

Tell us more about the honeymoon:

The day after the wedding we hosted a braai, catered by Shesha, at Burgundy Bourgogne in Franschhoek. This gave us the opportunity to see our guests one last time before heading on our ‘mini-moon’ in Wellington.

We stayed at Grande Dédale, which was the perfect place for us to unwind after all the excitement of the days before and prior to having to head back to the rat race in London. A few months later we flew to LA for an ‘American road trip’ which consisted of visiting the Big Sur, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma, Yosemite, Vegas and New York!

Then to top it all off we were lucky enough to win a five-day honeymoon at The One & Only Le Saint Géran in Mauritius which was the perfect way to end our wedding celebrations!

Advice to other Bridal couples tying the knot soon

I would definitely recommend employing a wedding coordinator, especially when planning a destination wedding. Booking the Aleit team was the best decision we made. There is no doubt in my mind that we wouldn’t have had as much fun and been as relaxed if we had planned the wedding ourselves.

Avoid scrimping on the most important parts of the day. Opt for a great make up artist (you want to look and feel your absolute best) and talented photographer/videographer – after all, this person will capture the special moments of your day which you will treasure forever as a reminder of your wedding day.

At some point during the day, steal yourselves away from your guests for a few minutes of private time, take in your surroundings and watch your wedding in full swing – the day is over so quickly so take a few mental photographs! Most importantly though, relax and enjoy your day and don’t sweat the small stuff - leave that to the professionals! Don’t lose sight of the whole point of the day – you are marrying the person you love and this is the first special day of your married lives together!

The first element to take into consideration when hosting an exclusive dinner for an important group of people is the location. Le Châtelat was the perfect setting for such a dinner. The opulent interior and lush gardens set the tone for the evening. Guests were shuttled to the venue and arrived at the grand staircase, where they were welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine and mouth-watering canapés. In contrast to the opulent and luxurious venue, we de-cided to go with an organic green look. Raw wooden tiffany chairs were complimented by a neutral table-cloth to frame the organic, natural look of the indig-enous floral décor used to brighten up the room.

After guests were seated at the single long table, presentations commenced accompanied by start-ers comprising of vanilla and beetroot cured wild river salmon gravlax, with avocado yogurt, braised Shimeji mushrooms in ginger and saki with a citrus reduction, topped with caviar. This was paired with a chilled glass of Springfield Sauvignon Blanc. Af-ter the delicious starter, another hand-picked guest speaker was invited to presented her take on the Power and Energy Forum - a hot topic for the en-tire evening. Thereafter, a Black truffle infused beef fillet with toasted butternut risotto croquettes, pa-nache of fresh garden vegetables and applewood port demi-glace served as the main chapter of this exquisite dinner. Another esteemed guests then stood to present another angle of The Forum before guests were treated to dessert in the form of infu-sion white chocolate and passion fruit crème brûlée, with toasted almond snap and sautéed peaches.

After the formalities, guests moved downstairs to the wine cellar, where they enjoyed cigars with a glass of Johnny Walker Blue Label – a perfect way to end a very successful and productive dinner.

An air of tranquility welcomed guests upon arrival at the beautiful Glenelly Estate as they absorbed the French countryside style setting. The scenery was beautifully comple-mented by the soothing melodies of a roman-tic French café trio, harmoniously sweeping through the exquisite rose garden setting. It was rather difficult to believe that you were not truly in the heart of France. Hosted at the beautiful garden of the Glenelly Manor House, their 10th Birthday Celebration was truly an unforgettable experience. The night was set to be filled with class, fine food and, it goes without saying, the wines from this breathtaking Estate - as they say: South Afri-can wine with a French twist.

“I have always believed in the quality and po-tential of South African wine,” says Madam May De Lencquesaing, owner of the Glenelly Estate, with her strong belief in continuing the French heritage of wine making in South Africa. Madam May believes in the country and its people. This year, 2013, they cele-brate their 10 year anniversary and the Aleit team was there to help make this an unforget-table night for both Madam and her guests. Stir Food filled the Manor House kitchen with delicacies to accompany the wine at stations spread throughout the garden. Here guests had the opportunity to pair the food with the different wines from the Estate.

Upon arrival guests were welcomed and greeted with the refreshing Glenelly unwooded Chardon-nay accompanied by mouthwatering canapés – this night was not going to disappoint! The décor was inspired by the incredible gardens. Guests enjoyed the beauty of the setting, and floral de-tail had the appearance of originating from the soil of the estate. Guests moved towards the elegant stations, with their first stop being the pairing of the Grand Vin de Glenelly Chardonnay and seared salmon, a symphony of flavours on their palates. This was followed by the Grand Vin de Glenelly Red Blend paired with a succulent fil-let mignon. From here the guests were treated to the voluptuous, and highly spoken of Lady May and Karoo lamb rillettes. The piece de resistance was a tast of the Glass Collection Shiraz and Ca-bernet Sauvignon paired with a delightful char-cuterie station. Once guests had enjoyed the food and wine pairing they moved to the desert station to indulge just a little more with chocolate fondants and a variety of soft cheeses.

Madam May De Lencquesaing’s presence throughout the planning and execution of the event was evident in every detail. From setup to the final touches Madam’s influence was there, right through to the last goodbyes. This evening didn’t just lived up to expectations, but exceed-ed by leaps and bounds. It truly was a beautiful South African night with a French twist!

MAD HATTER TEA PARTYBabylonstoren, the iconic new venue situated on one of the oldest Cape Dutch Farms in the Cape Winelands, was the perfect setting for an unfor-gettable birthday celebration. The Green House, a glass structure usually housing an organic deli, truly lent itself to an afternoon high tea party. In-spired by a vibrant, fun and colourful mad hatter’s tea party, the palette consisted of pastel shades inside the transparent glass house canvas. A sin-gle long tea table was set using a variety of table shapes and sizes, adorned with pastel tablecloths. Decorated with antique tea cups, saucers, pots and beautiful garden roses displayed in silver pots, the setting had an opulent and fun ambience. A tea sta-tion where guests could taste a variety of teas from all over the world served as a beautiful feature. The courtyard sported lounge pockets in a vast va-riety of colours and shapes. Décor items included vintage clocks, giant cards, bird cages, rabbit or-naments, hat boxes with hats, antique telephones and large displays of stacked tea cups and sau-cers. Oversized polystyrene cut-outs shaped like stilettos, rabbits, vintage cakes and tea pots were tinted in pastel shades. Stilettos were also sprayed in an array of colours and suspended from the sur-rounding trees. A checkered black and white dance floor was used as a giant chess board during guest arrival, and later converted into a vibrant setting for guests to dance the night away. Upon arrival, guests were seated at the long high tea table where they enjoyed a range of petit fours, cakes, macaroons and other delectable goodies. Homemade iced tea and lemonades were served in glass consol jars. Guests were treated to an ex-quisite menu including tea sandwiches and warm items straight from the braai’s: succulent pork, home-made, traditional boerewors and a variety of interesting salads made from the fresh produce of the day’s harvest.

The entertainment line-up did not fall short either... We started off the af-ternoon with a live trapeze act from a standalone tripod situated right above the guests heads, followed by Magdalene Minnaar’s magical perfor-mance underneath the large oak tree. A magician kept both the guests and kids entertained with a few tricks up his sleeve continually out doing his last trick! The Blinde Boere Orkes was next in line and tied in perfectly with thematic elements of this event. Acclaimed Capetonian band Good-luck was definitely the highlight of the evening, entertaining guests on the dance floor deep into the night with 3 Tons of Fun following on - the lovely ladies kept up the pace, while Good-luck ended the evening on a high note with their second performance.

“This year boasts the addition of twenty four eager new 1st year students into the Aleit Academy fold. We have been keeping them behind the scenes until after their beautiful photo shoot with the incredible Inecke of Inecke Photography. We had beautiful props courtesy of In and Out Events that made the already pictur-esque Lourensford Wine Estate even more inviting... Keep your eyes peeled for the 2nd and 3rd years who also had a shoot and will absolutely take your breath away. So with no further a due, I would like to introduce The Aleit Academy 1st Years of 2013!”

AMY-LEE HARRIS Fresh from matriculating at Somerset College, Amy-lee enrolled at The Aleit Academy knowing exactly the career path she wanted to follow. During the course of her schooling career Amy-Lee worked part-time at Mofam River lodge where she established a deep love for the events industry. Having the opportunity to help at the front of house and working alongside many event coordinators, Amy gained masses of knowledge and experience in both events and weddings. Being a down to earth young lady and a lover of the outdoors, Amy-Lee is also a national water-skier. Knowing just what hard-work and dedication is all about, Amy-Lee is ready to apply the same ethics to the events industry. “My favourite quote and motto in life is - A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step - and I am ready to take my first step with the Aleit Academy. I am looking forward to the many more opportunities the course presents me with,” says Amy-Lee.

ANDREA HALSTED Andrea has lived in Johannesburg for most of her life and has always been a little reserved, so it was quite a surprise when she broke out of her shell and decided to go to boarding school at St. Anne’s Diocesan College in Natal. It was here that Andrea truly found herself and realized her enthusiasm for the events industry and she decided to embark on the journey of joining The Aleit Academy. A positive person at heart, what Andrea enjoys most though is spending quality time with friends and family. The thing that excites Andrea most about the events industry is the joy that producing a successful event brings to the people involved. “The enthusiasm shown by those already at the Aleit Academy with regards to the events industry and the ideas they come up with excites me even more,” says Andrea. She truly believes that choosing to go to The Aleit Academy was one of the best decisions she has ever made.

AMY BERRINGTON Amy is originally from the Eastern Cape but moved to Botswana at a young age. Living in many different and exciting places has taught Amy to live in the moment and adapt to situations easily. Amy attended boarding school at Kingswood College from the age of eleven years old were she learnt independence and self confidence. At school, Amy ex-celled at waterpolo and swimming, where she was both dedicated and focused. Sport played a huge role in Amy’s life, teaching her teamwork and leadership. After school Amy was fortunate enough to be able to take a gap year and went on an Aupair journey in America where she had the opportunity to travel to some amazing places, gaining masses of life experience. Outgoing and optimistic, Amy loves to be creative and is passionate about both fashion and design. “My goal is to become an exceptional wedding coordinator and I truly believe that The Aleit Academy is the perfect place for me to achieve this,” says Amy.

BETHANY LANG Bethany, known as Beth to her peers, hails from the beautiful midlands of Kwa-Zulu Natal and grew up on a dairy farm. As a typical farmer’s daughter, Beth is as comfortable diving into the farm dam and wielding a motorbike as she is herding cows and negotiating dirt roads! Beth’s strengths lie in her ability to see what needs to be done in most situations and her ability to then create order and structure. She has been known to be a little controlling although this is supported by her good people skills and concern for people’s well being. Known as the ‘go to girl’, the one you can call on if you are in trouble ,because Beth is sure to have a solution and has a special way of making you feel like everything is going to be allright. “This new adventure is a challenge that, despite some anxious butterflies, I am excited to tackle,” says Beth.

CARLA DIXON Carla is a born and raised country girl spending her childhood all the way up in Clanwilliam and matriculating there in 2012. A fun-loving, energetic and outspoken young girl, when Carla sets her mind to something there is no way of changing it. “Joining The Aleit Acad-emy was really the best decision for me. The time for sleep and relaxing is over but fun comes in massive doses!” says Carla. She decided to join Aleit late in 2012 grabbing one of the last prized spots, and has not regretted the decision since. “I can’t live the same day twice, it would bore me to death. So I decided on a career that will give me variety in massive amounts!” remarked Carla. Naturally someone who lives every day as it comes and is very determined to making a great success of her future.

CHARNÉ KROESE Charné is a true Capetonian at heart, born and bred in the wonderful Mother City. Known fondly by friends and family as “Bee-bee Bubblebek” and known to be on the loud side, Charné’s fun-loving and charming characteristics make her a joy to be around and with her strong personality and perfectionist attributes, Charné is fitting right into The Aleit family. Charné arrived at The Aleit Academy chomping at the bit to start on the journey to reach all her dreams and goals. Paying a great amount of time to finer detail, enjoying the decorative side and believing in doing the small things with great love, Charné loves laughing and is a firm believer that laughter is the key to happiness. She will strive to be the best and through her passion and creative vision, Charné will make the clients’ dreams come alive. “My motto in life is that if you find something you love to do, you’ll never work a day in your life. Do the best, be the best – being second best is not motivation,” says Charné.

CAITLIN PIPE The youngest of three sisters, Caitlin was born in the beautiful city of Cape Town. Spending her primary school years in the picturesque town of Greyton, Caitlin devel-oped a passion for horse riding and the outdoor life. Growing up in a house full of girls meant conversations were always of fashion, weddings and becoming famous in some sort of way! Attending high school in Somerset West, riding still played a big role in Cailtin’s life with the new additon of dancing. After a brief time at Stellenbosch University, Caitlin felt that her creative side needed attention and that was when she pursued her dream of events planning and applied at The Aleit Academy. “Being the youngest in the family has taught me to be adaptable - I have a friendly personality with a sunny disposition and have always been a busy bee. I can’t wait to get involved with what lies ahead for me!” says Caitlin.

NELIS VOSLOO Born in Pretoria and growing up in Middelburg Mpumalanga, Nelis ma-triculated in 2009 from Die Wilgers High School. Finding himself in Cape Town, Nelis spent a gap year as a leadership developer where he learned a lot about people and more about himself! Nelis ia a trustworthy, loyal down to earth kind of guy who is into sport as well as a keen participant in the cabaret. Nelis is a very active, outdoor type of guy who enjoys nature as much as he can, whenever he can. “I’ve always had an interest in people and creating an environment where they can be themselves and have a good time, a place with good food and wine,” says Nelis. Currently a 1st year student at The Aleit Academy, Nelis is looking forward to learning more about the Industry and getting on the path to success.

JANA VAN NIEKERK Jana is a Bloemfontein girl who moved to Welgemoed in Cape Town at the age of three. During her high school years, Jana was a boarder at Girls’ High School in Paarl, making it easier for her to adapt to new circumstances and meeting new people. Jana is a fun and loving person and enjoys the company of people around her. She has a great sense of humour and excels at any task at hand, always throwing a bit of fun in the mix. During her school years Jana enjoyed drama and the performing arts, which really suited her bubbly and enthusi-astic personality. “Due to the Aleit Academy’s reputation and opportunities to learn, I joined the Academy to get exposure to event management at the highest level,” says Jana.

JANINE GOUS Janine was born and raised in Somerset West in the Western Cape. She has been dancing since she was three years old and has participated in many productions as well as qualifying for an international group competition to represent Cape Town in Italy. One of Janine’s greatest loves is to travel the world and experience various cultures, which has been made pos-sible for her throughout the years. Janine has always had a keen eye for events planning and management, but never thought that she’d find herself studying the profession until stumbling upon the Aleit Academy in her final year of high school. Janine’s family and friends are most important to her, along with her love of animals and the ten animals of her own that she has at home. Janine can be described as a fun-loving, caring and easy-going character, who is willing to succeed in everything she does. Priding herself on being a strong-minded, genuine and hard working person, whilst still being able to go out and have a good time - Janine looks forward to her time at the Academy and predicts only tremendous things to come during her time here.

ELIZMA FREEMAN Elizma was born and raised in Kuilsrivier in the Western Cape as the wild and adventures one in the household. A hard working student, Elizma is a very caring per-son and treats everyone with respect and always has a smile on her beautiful face. Outgoing and a fun person to be around, Elizma loves playing netball and considers herself to be quite a sportswoman. Being with friends and family, treating them like gold, is one of the most important things for Elizma and she treasures all those who are important to her. Elizma always lends a helping hand towards others and is a big animal lover who loves to go horse riding, saying it’s like therapy for the soul! With a bubbly personality and always a story to tell, Elizma can light up your day with just a smile.” My motto to live by is to do good to others and they will do good to you,” says Elizma.

JULIET GODWIN Juliet, known as Jubes by her friends, was born in the beautiful Zimba-bwe. After living there till she was 7 years old, her family emmigrated to Australia. Juliet has always had a love for dance, choreography, drama and all things creative. She attended St. Hilda Anglican School for girls, where she was given the opportunity to study a vast amount of creative and exciting subjects such as drama, film making and fashion design. Through her ex-perience in numerous forms of arts, Juliet realised her love for using individuality, creativity and co-ordination to bring an end product together that could be enjoyed by all. It was not long be-fore Juliet realised that the events industry was the career for her. “It was fate that led me across the Atlantic to The Aleit Academy!” says Juliet. With her ready smile and keen nature to work with people, Juliet is excited to go on her journey learning about the wonders of the event world.

KOULA COASTANTINIDES Koula completed high school with flying colours, however still at a loss as to where she fit in – that was until so came across The Aleit Academy... Koula really believes in the values of what the curriculum has to offer and wants to use the opportunity to really show off her talents. Koula is a truly devoted young woman with a huge drive to succeed. She loves to work with different types of people and sort out a problem on the spot. Koula has deep morals and values which are very important to her. She loves to spend time with those who are close to her. Koula believes in what she is and will try her utmost to be the best she can be. Koula is a down to earth person, independent and excited for the next 3 years and then the rest of her life in the events industry.

MARGO KRITZINGER Margo was born and raised in the beautiful Boland and matricu-lated from Paarl Girls High. An outgoing person who tends to be a little on the shy side, Margo has a genuine love of people and loves spening time with friends and family. Margo likes to put her soul into positive things in life and therefore chose The Aleit Academy as it is a challenging environment that will bring out the best in her. Margo will strive to make a big success of her studies and is looking forward to the next three years with the Academy. Margo is aware that she is very fortunate to be enrolled in The Aleit Academy and is striving to use this opportunity to prepare herself to become the best the industry has seen. “I am really looking forward to all the challenges and events that I will face in the next few years!” says Margo.

KARISKA JACOBS Kariska is a fun-loving young woman who loves her friends and fam-ily. Born in Centurion and moving to Cape Town at the age of 12, Kariska matriculated in 2012 from Stellenberg High School. Always thinking she wanted to be a chef, Kariska realised even though she likes making food, she completely loves weddings and events. Kariska is very open and likes to let people know where they stand, always trying to see the best in everything and striving to influence others in a positive way. Even though Kariska is slightly impatient, she knows how to have fun even when she does her work - laughing is a second nature to her. “I am excited to be a part of something bigger than what my imagination can create!” says Kariska.

MARIKE MEYER Marike, born in the vast country of Namibia, has determination and cour-age - like all Namibian people have. Representing her country at the World Swimming Cham-pionship taught Marike to be conscientious and hardworking from a young age. Marike is ad-dicted to exercising and is a super energised person with a palatable zest for life. With the will to succeed in anything she puts her mind to, Marike never shies away from a challenge. She is a fun loving person and loves to feel the buzz of people around her. As a go-getter, Marike is ready to face all the challenges in her path and is very excited about the world that has opened up to her through this amazing opportunity to study at the Aleit Academy.

MARYKE HENNOP Born in Pretoria and raised in George, Maryke is an honest, down to earth girl, ablaze about everything she does in life. Maryke is a fun and very loving person who is organ-ized and focused as well as approachable and friendly. A goal oriented young woman, Maryke takes pride in what she does and will always give credit where it is due. After school Maryke took a gap year to try and figure out what she wanted to do – having always been interested in events management, Maryke decided on The Aleit Academy. “I am very excited to learn everything that The Aleit Academy has to offer and am keen to participate to the best of my ability to strive for a long and successful career in this industry,” says Maryke.

MICAELA REID Micaela is a confident, independent, well-adjusted young woman deter-mined to reach for the stars whilst not forgetting the flowers beneath her feet. Born and bred in Benoni where she attended St. Dunstan’s College and had the honour to be appointed as Head girl where planning and organising was crucial. Micaela then went on to win the leadership award for her matric year showing even then that events co-ordinating and planning runs through her veins. Micaela is super creativite in the kitchen, be it with a cupcake or a six course meal – en-thusiasm and fascination is what drives her. Micaela is a person that quickly adapts to situations and is not easily intimidated nor does she shy away from a challenge. She is hardworking, loyal and extremely focused. Micaela believes that The Aleit Academy will offer her the opportunity to create a unique blend between people and cuisine which is her ultimate vision. One of Micaela’s favourite expressions is “Memories are made through people and food”.

MARISA NIEMANDT An Afrikaans Girl who hails from a small town called Villiersdorp in the Overberg, Marisa grew up in a creative environment and comes from a passionate and inspired family. Marisa matriculated in 2011 from Stellenbosch High school and has always been interested in Events management. After matriculating, Marisa completed a 1 year course in Business manage-ment & Entrepreneurship at Stellenbosch University Business School. After a wonderful opportunity to work for a royal family from Dubai while they stayed in South Africa, Marisa travelled with them all over South Africa and to Dubai and Abu Dhabi to attend a royal wedding. When Marisa applied to the Aleit Academy she knew this was where she needed to be and this is what she wanted to do, she is still not sure if she wants to be an event or a wedding planner though! Marisa appreciates the little things in life like a good cup of coffee and meaningful conversation. Marisa is quiet and observant in nature but also loves to be social and outgoing, loving to spend time with her family and friends. Marisa believes that kindness & respect towards others goes a long way. “I am where I need to be, this is what I love and this is what I am passionate about,” says an inspired Marisa.

NICOLA EDLEY Born and bred in Hillcrest, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Nicola matriculated from Hillcrest High School just last year after the culture shock of transferring from St. Marys DSG Kloof. She never thought she would be straight out of school and moving away from home already! Far from home she is eager to learn and to reach her goals. Nicola has grown up around the events industry and has enjoyed seeing every aspect of each event come together. As a little girl she would always insist on setting and decorating the tables for dinner parties. As she got older she began to take a greater interest in her mum’s work and started helping out at many events - this is where her obses-sion began... Nicola has always known that she wanted to follow in her mum’s footsteps and work in the industry having always shown a talent for organising and attention to detail. She is independent and exudes a quiet confidence with a big heart! Nicola has always enjoyed helping and being of service to others. “With family from all around the world I am really looking forward to being able to travel and share my talent and creative ideas with people everywhere,” says Nicola

RIAAN BARNARD Riaan was born and bred in Cape Town and embodies the true Cap-tonian lifestyle . With a fantastic sense of humour, Riaan always has a wide smile on his face. Outgoing and active, Riaan loves the outdoors and playing sports. Riaan matriculated from DF Malan where he was well known for his acting abilities as well as sport, playing both first team rugby as well as a stint in the Netball team! Meeting new people and making friends, Riaan loves being busy. He is very interested in other countries, languages and different cultures. Riaan enjoys life to the full and tries to make the best of all situations “ I am keen to learn more about the industry and take it by the horns! The Aleit Academy is going to be a fantastic place for me to hone my skills and learn as much as I possibly can,” remarked Riaan.

ROBYN REINHARDT Robyn matriculated in 2010 from Felixton College, a small town school in Zululand. After realizing that a Bcomm at University wasn’t for her, she decided to study something that would enable her to express herself more creatively. She enjoys drawing, painting and coming up with new innovative and creative ideas. Robyn has a great interest in marketing and believes events play both a creative and innovative role in life. Robyn is eager to see for herself first hand the ways in which to market an image of a product or company. She has an open minded personality and aims to put those around her at ease. Robyn enjoys work-ing with people as well as meeting new people from different walks of life. Aiming to learn life lessons from others and to become a more understanding person, Robyn’s passion is art and she hopes to challenge as well as show her creative side while studying at The Aleit Academy.

PAIGE PLEDGER Paige considers herself to be quite the gypsy when asked about where she is from... Born in Johannesburg, Paige then moved to Botswana where she lived for 8 years and found her love for art and drama. Always considered as the ‘arty one’ amongst her peers, Paige sees herself as a go-getter, as well as an enthusiastic young woman. Later on, Paige moved to George in the Eastern Cape where she fell into a peaceful lifestyle by the sea where she finished the last few years of high school. After applying and getting into Stellenbosch Uni-versity she stumbled across The Aleit academy and she fell in love with the course criteria, as it embodied everything she loves. Paige envisions being in a creative career path where she can thrive and grow as a person each and every day. “I’m really looking forward to what the next three years hold for me - I’m ready for whatever is thrown my way!” remarked Paige.

SONIQUE BEETGE Born in Pretoria and raised in Port Elizabeth, Sonique matriculated in 2012 from Cradock High School. Excited to start a new beginning, Sonique made her way to Stellenbosch. With an absolute love for organizing events, Sonique knew that The Aleit Acad-emy was the best place to both set and achieve her goals. Her passion is and always will be to organize the most beautiful and successful weddings possible! Sonique is kind, loving, fun, outgoing, hard working and loyal young lady who has the world as her oyster!

A cool summer breeze refreshes the evening sky as I sit here, reflecting back on the first three months of a very exciting year. 2013 truly is proving to be a very good year, filled with exciting new changes, projects and unforgettable events. The Joburg team is work-ing themselves to the bone, executing numerous in-credible events on a weekly basis, while the Cape Town office is operating like the well-oiled machine it is. Not only are we achieving more ground breaking innovation than ever before, but an upswing in the economy has finally become a reality for the events industry.

With the steady growth that our economy is showing we can finally say with great excitement that we are once again able to work on the high profile functions that make us the industry leaders. The public are no longer clutching to their wallets, and have stopped waiting for better times to come. Better times have finally arrived, and with it truly magical events filled with beauty, wonder and unparalled style.

As always the European market adores our work. I am incredibly excited about my upcoming trip to Lon-don and Germany in early April. There I will be meet-ing with some of our beautiful clients, and of course will also be visiting some of our wonderful European media friends. Then of course there is the South African media. Not only are we the leading events coordination company in South Africa, but also the preferred television personalities representing the industry that we love. I am proud to have once again been selected as the lifestyle editor of DeKat Televi-sion, for which I am planning an extensive range of incredible documentaries, sure to alter the way we perceive eventing and hosting in South Africa.

Something even more special to me though is see-ing the biggest dream of my career blossoming. Our Academy has now become the most sought after event training facility in the country (and in my opin-ion the world). To see our promising new intake of students evolve and develop so quickly into brilliant coordinators must be the most rewarding feeling on earth. The young ladies quickly traded their pumps for elegant stilettos, and the boys are evolving into refined gentlemen.

With the turn-around experienced in the economy, trends have also once again adapted. Pastels are big, but more importantly, weddings and events are becoming more personalised and intimate. Clients are creating experiences that are true to themselves, while celebration is once again the key focus. Opu-lence can of course never be replaced and is once again ever present in all of our functions. Yes, less is more, but more is so much more. It’s wonderful to see glorious settings, exquisite floral décor and touches of drama once again featuring in everything we touch.

In closing, all’s well that ends well. As The Aleit Group continues to go from strength to strength in 2013, I am just thankful for every blessing bestowed upon our beautiful family.
