Cleone W. Elwell Hambright, 51 year DKG member, passed away at the Fairbanks Pioneer home on May 4, 2014, with family by her side. Cleone was born June 21, 1922 in Calumet, Oklahoma, and would have celebrated her 92nd birthday this summer. She was fortunate to have good health and a sound mind all her life. !! Receiving a BS in Home Economics, Cleone was already an experienced teacher when she moved to Fairbanks with her family in 1958. She taught eight years before moving again to teach in Anchorage. In all, Cleone spent 24 years in Education. She retired to Arkansas for several years and then, after her husband Al died, Cleone returned to Fairbanks to be with her family.!! Cleone was extremely proud of the fact that both of her children, Claudia and Randy, chose to be teachers. !! When asked for a couple of memories of her own career, Cleone mentioned these two: I taught Head Start the first summer that it was held in Fairbanks. Also, one time I had 106 Kindergarteners, in three groups, for one whole year at Hunter school.!!M. Florence Allen Holmes, 95, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013. Daughter of gold mining and adventure seeking pioneers, Florence was born in Haines, the second of five children, to P.B. (Doc) Allen and Ella Anastasia Carroll Allen. Raised on her parents' homestead, when she and her siblings were old enough, they attended school in Haines. She loved her youthful years in Haines, and throughout her adult life, Florence relished any

opportunity to return. After graduation, and at only 17 years of age, Florence left Haines, traveling by boat and train, to reach Fairbanks so she could attend the University of Alaska. Travel back to Haines took too long and it cost too much for a young woman putting herself through college in those days, so she stayed in Fairbanks until 1939,

when she earned her bachelor's degree in education degree. She worked many jobs during her college years and always credited Dr. Charles Bunnell for resolutely finding employment for students so they could afford to stay at the university. One summer, she worked as a cook for Frederika Wallen at Rika's Roadhouse in Delta, and the anecdotes she told of her adventures there became the basis of many inside family jokes.!Florence completed her student teaching requirements under the guidance of the late Rosamond Weller and was awarded her first teaching contract in Wasilla by Marie Drake. During her 27-year career as an educator, Florence and her husband, Orval, taught in Flat, Dillingham, Homer, Anchorage, Texas and Fairbanks. She highly prized education, consistently promoted its value, and proudly maintained a retired, lifetime Alaska teaching certificate. It was often said Florence had the patience and the skills to teach any student to read. She loved reading, especially biographies and stories about Alaska, and it is a tribute to her memory that she shared this invaluable gift with many fortunate students, including her own children. Florence enjoyed her membership in Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Chapter, P.E.O., Chapter B Sisterhood, the Pioneers of Alaska Auxiliary, the First Presbyterian Church and the Fairbanks Garden Club. She made many dear and lasting friends among the members of these groups.

May Musings from DKG State President Judy Jasperson

It is 72 degrees, ducks are on the lake in about 50 feet of open water, and it is only May 3rd. Last year at this time, things were frozen solid, temperatures were in the mid-20s, and everything was covered with snow. We wondered if we were ever going to have summer. What a difference a year can.!

Similarly, in Beta Gamma State AK, a lot has happened since officers were installed at the April 2013 Convention. Sadly, several long time members have passed away and two chapters made the difficult decision to dissolve.!

DKG is about like-minded ladies Teaching Minds & Touching Hearts as we move Together Towards Tomorrow, while Sharing Our Vision and Strengthening Our Society. These are this year’s slogans at the state and international levels, and they string together nicely. However, they are more than words in a slogan, they are what we do every time we gather!!

We realize that to move forward, we are going to have to be visionaries. As we teach others, and touch their hearts, we should open our minds to today’s “new woman” and to the changes she needs from us to become a DKG sister.!

To help DKG AK grow and grow stronger, EVERYONE needs to know the society on every level: local, state, and international. The more you know, the more you’ll be able to talk the DKG “Buzz” and encourage others to join us. Feel free to “borrow” from your sisters.!

The Info Fair at Zone Three’s outstanding 2014 Workshop was adapted from NW Regionals in WY. It worked beautifully at the state level, and again at our own Beta meeting yesterday. Keep an Info Fair experience in mind for your own chapter, as a tool for teaching about DKG at the state and international levels.!!I want to thank again, those of you who said YES to State positions last April, and thank now, those who said YES to Chapter positions this May. YOU will help us plan the direction of Beta Gamma State. What is YOUR vision for our DKG Future? What should we keep? What should we move on from? And where should we end up? !DKG members have thought “outside the box” since our twelve Founders (who had NO IDEA of the extent to which their group would grow) gathered in 1929, and since our own AK Founders formed Beta Gamma State in 1955. I’m calling upon YOU to do it again now. We can Teach Minds, Touch Hearts, and move Together Towards Tomorrow to Strengthen our Society. We merely have to accept the changes that come with the move. !

Have a happy summer and join me in July at Indianapolis. jj!
