i recently listened to a pastor deliver a thought-provoking sermon about “hubs and holding patterns”. As an editor of an

airport magazine, you can imagine how my interest was piqued and how keen i was to hear how these two worlds, so to speak, came together. i was impressed. i know that religion and faith are different for many of us, but this pastor was able to relay principles in a way that was worldly enough for anyone. For me, it resonated in my Christianity, but i was amazed at how the concept of travel, airport hubs and being held in holding patterns could connect in our daily lives with the concept of faith.

indulge me — i hope i do Dylan justice in sharing this message in the context of an editor’s letter in this magazine.

The first concept, hubs, is a simple one. Airports and airlines use hubs to bring people from different places around the world together in one place before getting

them onto different planes for shorter journeys to their ultimate destinations. in many cases it wouldn’t make sense to fly from, say, Manila to Dallas, since the scale of economies just doesn’t work. so, hubs are there to bring people together from different points of departure and realign them with the purpose of all reaching one single end destination. interestingly, most of these people don’t know each other and haven’t made prior arrangements to travel together. They just place their trust in those who have put together these routes and have done the work of figuring out how the routes and hubs should work. There is unquestioning faith in this system, even although it places you in a strange place, with strange people, sometimes off-track from where you are heading. Odd thing, this Faith.

The second concept, holding patterns, was even more profound for me. The pastor explained that we are usually kept in holding patterns up in the sky, frustrated and wanting to just get down to our end destinations, because there is some form of chaos or disorder happening below — which we normally can’t see and are not even aware of. A holding pattern is generally for our safety and, while it doesn’t always fit into our plans, you can be sure that

you’d prefer to have the plane in a holding pattern, keeping you safe, rather than dropping you into a situation that could put you in harm’s way. Again, there is trust and faith in those looking out for us and, even although we don’t know what is taking place on the ground, or what chaos is unfolding, we trust that there must be some reason for the holding pattern. Once we arrive, the chaos is sometimes long gone and we are left questioning why we were held up, never to know what harm was averted.

You can read into this what works for you, or even just read it as a simple story on hubs and holding patterns but i can tell you that i’m glad to place my faith somewhere, in someone that puts me in hubs i hadn’t planned for and connects me with people with a common vision and i am grateful that there are times that i am kept clear of chaos, even when i may feel that i’m being unjustifiably held up.

Before i close, i must add thanks to Dylan for an inspiring service. Keep your wings up!

God BlessJustin scott

Chiano SkyJohannesburg model and singer, 19 year old, Chiano Sky is taking South Africa by storm with her seductive mix of jazzy pop. With three major singles under her belt, which have been play listed nationwide, Sick Sick, Walking Away and her current single, Home Sweet Home, have rapidly made Chiano a firm favourite amongst S.A audiences and it won’t be too long till she’s as sought after all over the world! The Sky is definitely the limit for this fun, fresh and exciting singer. This Is Chiano’s City and this is what she likes to do in it!

Favourite place to Take a walkArts On Main, Observing the city life is always interesting- the buildings are old fashioned and there is always a lot of trendy, funky and fashionable people walking around, it’s a great atmosphere to be surrounded by when on foot.

Where is a must go to, to see the sun set?Definitely the roof top of the 12 Decades in Main Street Life, you look over the whole city of Johannesburg while sipping on a refreshing drink and listening to live acts.

MY CiTY Johannesburg

Favourite Place to let your hair down and have a good timeThis has to be Liberation Cafe in Melville, I only recently found this place. It is very vibey but still spacious so you can dance and have a good time. My favourite thing about this cafe is that it has a jukebox so you become the DJ all night.

best place to catch up with your friendsThe Office in Greenside or lunch at Tasha’s. The Office is a bar with modern interiors where you can listen to old classics and taste their famous cocktails, the lights are dimmed so the mood is also very smokey - not only do I get to catch up with my mate but we get to shake it too.

Favourite Place to Go for breakfast Good old Mugg & Bean, a quick M&B on the go breakfast never disappoints or French toast with bacon and syrup when I’m really treating myself.

Favourite Place to work outAt home! The gym is far too distracting and to me more of a ‘runway show’ for people than a place where we are focused on getting fit and working out.

With the annual Consumer Electronics Show having wrapped up in Las Vegas during the first two weeks of January, loads of new devices, gadgets and models have been launched.

First up, the Sony Ericsson team announced a number of new mobile devices, one of which, the Sony Ericsson Xperia S, will soon be hitting South African shores.

The Xperia S is the next generation model from the ever popular Xperia series launched in 2010. The new Xperia S is an Android smartphone that delivers a

stunning viewing experience with a high resolution screen, Sony HD experiences and a 12MP camera that takes pictures in just 1.5 seconds from standby. The Xperia S also comes with a powerful 1.5GHz dual-core processor for faster performance.

The Xperia S will be available to consumers globally from the first quarter of this year. Launching on Android platform 2.3 (Gingerbread), Xperia S will be upgraded to Android platform 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) during the second quarter of 2013.

Housed in a stylish full aluminium case, with six high-bright pinpoint LED lights, the PowerMonkey Discovery will recharge an iPhone twice, standard mobile phones three to four times, or give iPods / MP3 players up to an additional 120 hours of playtime. It is also compatible with e-readers, Sat Navs, handheld games consoles, portable GPS systems and more!

Featuring a state-of-the-art 3500mAh lithium polymer battery, the sleek PowerMonkey Discovery offers users real power on the move.

Wahoo Fitness, the leader in smartphone fitness technology, recently announced the awesome new Wahoo Fitness Blue HR, the world’s first Bluetooth smart heart rate monitor. Using the latest in Bluetooth technology, the Blue HR (Heart Rate) will communicate directly with the iPhone 4S and other Bluetooth smart-ready devices, providing users with real-time heart rate readings on their smartphones. With Wahoo’s Blue HR and the fitness app of your choice, you now have your heart rate data, music playlists, phone, GPS maps and more all in one place.

The Wahoo Fitness Blue HR is available for purchase online at www.wahoofitness.com. We have ordered ours and will be giving a full review in an upcoming edition.

The Discovery has been optimized for weight, size and performance, measuring just 114 x 13 x 46mm and weighing 107g — approximately two thirds the size of the iPhone 4.

There’s a clothing company

(I won’t mention any names) but

it should be called YWF — you won’t

fit — or YCA —you can’t afford. Apart from the fact that

everything they sell is size “I-only-eat-lettuce”, if you’re a

medium-height bird you’re stuffed when it comes to dresses and

skirts unless you’re the type of girl who likes to show off your past,

present and future! The sad fact is that it’s not just this particular

clothing store! It’s happening everywhere — the fit gets smaller

and the shorts, dresses and skirts get shorter and these days even

the shirts are getting shorter! These girls might as well be walking

around in bikinis or their underwear — that’s if underwear even

fits under these skin-tight, minute pieces of fabric. Come on,

ladies, show some pride and give the guys something to work

for— leave something to the imagination! I’m not an old

hag trying to correct the youth; I am the youth trying to

wake the youth up!

2 I don’t really know the protocol for talking on a phone in a public loo — on the loo! But I find it extremely distasteful! I mean, surely you can wait a

minute till you’re done tinkling. After all, what could be so

important that you have to answer a phone call while you’re

doing your business? If it’s a mate, you know you can phone

back and if it’s a client, making them endure the awkwardness

of the silent echo of a bathroom stall is just so wrong. Another

thing — a lot of people suffer from shy bladders and you

blabbering about your auntie’s uncle’s sister’s big hairy wart on her back is not something that helps anyone pee

any better!

3 No means no! What is it with people who don’t understand the concept of “NO”! A lot of the time people are just being polite and won’t say “yes” to things like food or drink, but if you’re past the third “no” on the menu, you kind of get the point that they don’t want anything! Same with going out — no matter what the next thing that comes out of your mouth is, my answer will still be “no”. Forcing someone to do something they clearly don’t want to do isn’t exactly going to make them the life of the party. If anything, you will be walking around with a miserable bint who takes every little thing as a sign that she shouldn’t have gone out. In my opinion, if you force it, it’s going to be fake.

4 Taxis are going to be the

end of the human race as we

know it! They (not all, but most)

have a complete disregard for other drivers on

the road; it is frightening how people just don’t care

if they kill a few people because of their inability to

drive like a ... responsible person. Is there a school

that they go to, to learn how to drive like complete

jackasses, or are they born with it — “When I grow up,

mommy, I’m going to be a taxi driver and probably

hurt a few people on my way to being a superstar

in the taxi industry!” Proud moment that must

be...

issue 19 | the airport magazine

A perfect entry into the world of motoring starts with a small car.

Superminis are no longer sold on price competitiveness alone because they are so capable in key areas and buyers are increasingly downsizing to them from bigger models. Larger cars are more practical, but these latest small cars make better use of their size. They are safe, too, having performed well in Euro NCAP crash tests. City cars and superminis really come into their own around town and many have impressive refinement at speed, with enough power to keep up with the traffic flow.

CEO of Honda, Takanobu Ito reckons his Honda Brio helps expand the joy of owning vehicles to more customers by being affordable. “To accomplish this we have focused on creating an attractive package at an affordable price,” he says.

Brio means ‘verve’ in Italian, and true to its name, this little Honda is extremely nimble in congested city traffic. A sprightly 1,2-litre i-VTEC engine offers 65 kW of power and 109 Nm of torque - good for 0- 100 km/h in just over 12 seconds. The 5-speed manual returns a combined consumption of 5,6 litres/100 km.

Inside, it’s overwhelmingly beige, but the high quality materials and trim is

impressively well put together. The dashboard is simple, yet complete. Four adults in the car is a feasible proposition.Slightly bigger than the Brio is the Peugeot 208, the replacement for the unloved 207. It has fresh face and engine line-up, but it has the same platform that underpinned the 207, albeit much lighter and better handling than its predecessor. One of the most pleasing aspects of the new 208 is that it has a cheeky character, reminiscent of the Citroen 2cv and Renault 5.

The all-new three-cylinder engine is spirited, if a little intrusive, when worked hard. There is plentiful room in the Peugeot 208 for four adults. Indeed, it is comfortably commodious by class standards. The new, ‘floating’ communications, audio and navigation screen on the centre console looks slick but takes some getting used to.

The manual gear-change encourages a gentle driving style, which is rewarded by a claimed combined fuel consumption of 4.7 l/100km. Peugeot’s other ‘08’ models have real promise and to some extent The 208 continues the theme. It rides and steers very well and subdues cabin noise well.

Back to Japan again, Suzuki is one of those brands that punch under its weight. A mass producer of SUVs, motorbikes and cars, it does not pierce our consciousness like its other Japanese rivals, notably Toyota,

Honda, Nissan and even Subaru and Mitsubishi.

The first Swift dates back to 1983 but this, the evolutionary Suzuki Swift Sport is surely the best ever- quicker, more efficient and cleaner too- with a well-sorted all-new, platform. The rev-happy motor produces an entertaining drive. The cabin offers decent passenger space, but the boot is small.

The Swift Sport has real appeal and is more competitive than before. It’s a real hoot to drive, has a well-built interior and is competitively priced. It looks a little too similar to the standard Swift for some, but if you want MINI Cooper type handling and verve, this car deserves a serious look. Its blend of low mass, a powerful engine, sharp and direct handling makes it thoroughly entertaining. This car will put a smile on your face every time you drive it.

Get ready, start your engines and it is a go for the annual Gauteng Motor Show! With the event back

in top speed action at the Zwartkops Raceway in Centurion on 1 and 2 June, the exhibitions and special events company, Thebe Exhibitions and Projects, who have the rights to the Gauteng Motor Show, are shifting it up a gear this winter.

Since 2004, the annual show has been entertaining thousands of visitors with the latest and greatest in motoring technology, thrilling stunts and adrenaline-charged track and driving experiences. However, new on the event line-up this year is the Atomic Junkies Adrenaline Sports Fest, which features activities such as a remote control drifting competition, the SupaDrift series and suicide rides. Glynis Anderson, General Manager at Thebe Exhibitions and Projects, explained that it had made sense to combine the Atomic Junkies Adrenaline Sports Fest with the Gauteng Motor Show as this would increase visitor attendance. “We acquired the Gauteng Motor Show in July

last year and with the two shows combined, we expect around 12,000 visitors this year,” she added. “There are also a number of new Adrenaline products that will be showcased this year.”

Some of the regular attractions that visitors can expect to see again at this year’s show include a vast number of activities and events, unique car exhibits and the launch of exciting new products and track activities. But Anderson also understands the importance of switching up the list of activities each year and adding some fun new surprises to the programme line-up. “It is imperative that new areas are incorporated and developed every year in line with visitor demand,” she said.

As for new additions to this year’s line-up, there will be new exhibitors and track events, as well as the VIP opportunity to drive around the track with one of South Africa’s drifting champions. “Various VIP packages are available for the discerning petrol-head — it is a must,” Anderson said.

The Gauteng Motor Show is at the Zwartkops Raceway as usual this year and the track is a major contributing factor to the success of the event. “Visitors like the venue — they are familiar with the surroundings and the size of the track and the format adds to the excitement of the event overall,” Anderson explained.

With the incorporation of exhilarating new activities and events into the programme, visitors can prepare to kick into sixth gear at this year’s Gauteng Motor Show. “We hope to take the show up a few notches this year,” she said. “We feel that visitors will be tempted by the line-up of new activities and events and the enhanced profile of the exhibitors.”

The fun does not stop there. Anderson added that visitors can expect several exciting surprises at this year’s show, including one that will include some top motoring celebrities. “It will be a great day out for the whole family and you can shop till you drop,” she concluded.

“The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our ‘behind-the-scenes’ with everyone

else’s ‘highlight reel’” ~ Steve Furtick.

Comparing yourself to others can be the most self-limiting and pointless thing you can do.

Yet we all do it, or have done it at some point in our lives — we compare ourselves to others and gauge where we are based on what we observe them to be doing.

Of course, part of comparing is a natural human tendency and an important part of critical decision-making. However, it becomes dysfunctional when it stirs envy and jealousy and reinforces an unrealistic and negative self-image. And when this happens, there is never a win. I mean, how often do we compare ourselves to someone less fortunate than us and consider ourselves blessed? More often than not, we do the exact opposite — we compare

son ourselves to someone who we perceive as

being, having or doing more.

And this just leaves us coming up short. So how do we kick the habit of comparing? Well, here are a few ideas:

1 Learn from a rival’s positive pointsGet your mind off of what you perceive you lack and try to learn from everyone

you meet. Yoko Ono says, “Transform jealousy to admiration and what you admire will become part of your life.” An inspiring credo to live by.

2 Stop being afraid to be yourselfWhy compare yourself to others? No one in the entire world can do a better

job of being you than you. Whatever your size, colour, gender, race, or nationality, don’t be afraid to be yourself. God made you and He loves what He made.

3 Forgive and learnLearn to recognize that holding a grudge only ties you down and

prevents you getting what you really want out of life. Untie the knot and set yourself free. Better yet, analyze and learn what actually hurt you and use the experience to become a better you.

4 Give to others what you most desire for yourselfEchoing the timeless words of Jesus,

if you want your work to be valued, value others’ work. If you want love, give love. If you want a successful career, help another’s career to flourish.

5 Cultivate gratefulnessTry to appreciate the grace of both the hurdles and the joys you’ve been

given in this life. Instead of comparing, try to appreciate what you have rather than focussing on what you lack. And when you do this, I guarantee you’ll feel better about yourself and about this world.

LIRA The voice of Africa

We get to speak to one of S.A’s most cherished Afro singers and get a sneak peek behind the curtain into this inspiring woman’s life! With her indisputable natural talent and

extraordinary — and unique — vocals, LIRA has gained a loyal following, but life for this songstress has not always been glamorous. Born in daveytown, a Johannesburg township, she started honing her talent as a singer/songwriter at a young age, following in the footsteps of her idols, like Miriam Makeba, Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin, and at the tender age of 16 began performing perform live. Today Lira is a multi-platinum award-winning South African singer/songwriter who has won a plethora of accolades and graced the covers of numerous magazines. In 2008 she was named Woman of the year by Glamour magazine South Africa. With her jazz, soul, funk Afro-fusion sound and goddess-like looks, it is no wonder that this dedicated and hard-working diva has found success and made a name for herself that easily and proudly ranks with that of her idol, Miriam Makeba!

Tell us a bit about yourself — hobbies, character and the girl behind the music? I am a very private person and am happy to spend time at home when I am not working. I also enjoy playing golf when the opportunity arises.

What does it mean to you to be one of Audi’s Ambassadors? Audi has always been my favourite vehicle brand and for years before I became an ambassador, I had the image of an Audi as my desktop. Looking back on the years that I have been associated with the brand, I couldn’t be prouder to be an Audi Ambassador.

how and when did you realise that you were a good enough singer to pursue singing as a career? When I was 16 years old, my best friend and I entered a talent show and won in

the categories of Best Composition and Best Performance. This win gave us more opportunities to perform at various gatherings and it is though this experience that I discovered that I could hold and connect with a crowd.

how did you manage to get your big break into the industry? In 2003 I signed up with a small independent label that distributed through Gallo Music. It took two years for my first album to be released but the first single, All my love, broke the record for being the most-played song on SA radio at the time. I had seven songs off the album on high rotation. This gave me an introduction into the industry, but it was, however, my second album, released through Sony Music and entitled Feel Good, that was my big break.

Who are your music idols? how have they shaped you into the singer you are today? Mirriam Makeba, who taught me the importance of being African no matter where in the world I am, Stevie Wonder, who made me want to write beautiful lyrics and Sade, who reminds me to embrace my femininity.

Besides singing, what else have you done or are you interested in — modelling/ acting, etc? My singing career has opened many doors for me that include modelling and acting. I co-starred in a movie called The Italian Consul in 2010, which was a fantastic experience. I am also an ambassador for The Southern Africa Trust Change4ever Campaign, which aims to reach a new generation of people who want to find lasting solutions to poverty rather than temporary relief through conventional “charity”. This is very much in line with my core values and I enjoy the work I do with this campaign.

Fashion and celebrities almost go hand-in-hand — what is your view on fashion and what fashion tip would you give someone that needed help? Fashion trends come and go, but it is important for people to dress to suit their bodies and to feel comfortable in what they wear. I tend to advocate wearing South African brands because I believe in them and love the uniqueness and global appeal that the designers have managed to capture.

What do you like to do during your downtime — are you a pyjama-chill-around-the-house-on-a-Sunday type of girl, or do you like to get out and make the most of your days off? Sunday is usually the day when I want to relax and recoup before another busy week, so I am perfectly happy to be home doing the absolute minimum all day.

What advice would you give to young women who want to pursue a professional career in music? An educational background will stand you in good stead. Approach your music career as a business. Have a clear vision of what you want to achieve. Look for, or create, opportunities to express your talent. Find your audience and make a point of performing as often as you can. If composition is your strength, then do that often, too. Your talent is only a potential until you refine and hone it through practice. The more you get out there, the more you increase awareness of what you

do. Don’t wait for that big deal — go out there and create opportunities for yourself.

Once you’ve made it to “star” status, do things just fall into place or does it still take constant work to keep yourself at the top? The music industry is a very dynamic environment so it’s important for you to continuously give of your best, no matter what the hype may dictate. It’s important to keep refining your craft and staying on top of your game. You want to keep growing and finding new ways to thrill your fans. What would you say is the best part of your job? I just love producing good quality music and incorporating new elements when I perform live. I’m an entertainer and I also enjoy finding new ways of doing what I love to do.

you have won many awards since your debut What has been the most satisfying award?I have received awards for being a Role Model several times. I also received an award for being the biggest fundraiser for charity. These awards speak to my character and are the most special to me.

What do you see yourself doing five years from now? Where would you like to be in your career? In five years’ time I want to have fully-established my brand globally and I want the world to know what Africa can offer and for people to realise how much we have to offer.

Funniest thing you’ve ever seen at an airport: I once saw an imprint of a bird that flew into a window, it was the weirdest thing because the bird was nowhere to be seen but it had left such a clear print on the window!

Fave thing to do to pass the time at an airport: I use this time to go through my e-mails. When this is not possible, my band and I pass the time by playing a game of cards. Crazy 8 is our favourite — actually it’s the only game we play.

In the fourth instalment of Photographers to look out for, in which we profile the

best of our nation’s photographers — professionals who we think you would do well to use when you want to capture that next special moment — we are featuring Dylan Laubscher, an automotive photographer who is known for his ability to capture the beauty of a car in a single photograph. He is said to be the ultimate petrol-head and is rumoured to enjoy a double petrol on the rocks from time to time. His passion for his craft goes beyond the extraordinary and his experience in the design industry has catapulted his talent to a level of its own. Specializing in automotive photography and with a love for innovative thinking, Dylan Laubscher is this month’s photographer to look out for!

Tell us a little bit about yourself? I live in Durban and have been in the marketing/ advertising industry for the last 10 years. Because of my love of all things automotive, I decided to use my background in art direction to create some art. Now I use my skills to do what I love.

how long have you been a photographer? I have been shooting for the last seven years.

What got you started in photography and did you study? I studied Graphic Design as Photography was not offered the year I applied. However, I consider this as providential as I learnt more and was sent in directions that I would never had been allowed to if I had just studied Photography.

What gives you ideas or inspires you to create such amazing imagery?Petrol runs in my blood. I believe that everyone has their own passion and this happens to be mine, so creating imagery out of your passion just seems the logical thing to do in a very emotional topic.

Favourite place to shoot? I have not had the privilege yet, but I believe that my favourite place would have to be the Bonneville Salt Flats …

What type of cameras do you shoot with? I shoot with Nikon cameras with a full frame sensor as much as I can.

What is your favourite photography accessory?A light bank.

how important is Photoshop in your final images? For my style it is paramount. I use the layering capabilities of Photoshop to create depth and multiple light situations in one image.

What do you think makes a great photographer? The willingness to try to manipulate light as much as you can, as well as getting an evocative image as your end result.

Where would you like to see your photography business in five years time?I would like to be shooting for private clients internationally, as well as to have some commercial campaigns under my belt.

MR Price Pro 2013

It’s time to get your beach on

issue 19 | the airport magazine

38 |

The prestigious Mr Price Pro is almost on our doorstep and once again it promises to be THE event

on the KZN winter Calendar! Each year this top surfing event attracts thousands of eager beach-goers and, of course, some of the world’s top surfers to Ballito’s unblemished shores and the organisers are promising a jam-packed, entertainment-filled week that will be bigger and better than ever before this year!

Now in its third consecutive year in Ballito, The Mr Price Pro has gone from strength to strength, offering visitors the ultimate in surfing competitions and an ever-growing entertainment schedule that will keep both kids and adults entertained for the duration of the event.

So what can one expect from this year’s event? Rather ask, what can’t one expect! So, from 1 to 7 July 2013, prepare to get bronzed and barefoot, because you won’t want to leave the beach.

There is the exciting Beach Mania programme that offers beach sports and recreational activities for the whole family. A new addition to the entertainment calendar is the Food and Wine Exhibition, which will be hosted by La Montagne in partnership with First Resorts. This is a fantastic, not-to-be-missed addition that will showcase the hospitality and food industry of KwaDukuza and the North Coast. As we all know, local is always lekker, so join in the festivities and show your support. Included in the presentation will be a celebrity chef demonstration component, local produce stands and a variety of cook-offs.

As usual, the festival area will be buzzing with all sorts of things to do and buy and, and, and… The Urban Rage Extreme Sports Programme will once more host awesome, adrenaline-fuelled demonstrations during the five-day period. The programme, activated and sponsored by Mr Price and Monster, include items such as BMX, freestyle-soccer, breakdance, wakeskate

parkour, and much, much more and is definitely a must-see. As always, the entertainment stage will showcase some of our amazing local talent, of which there is no shortfall in our beautiful province.

And finally (even though I’ve probably only touched the tip of the iceberg of what’s on offer) the ever-popular Mr Price Pro Music Concert kicks the weekend off and this year the weekend starts on Thursday, July 4! Yes, there will be not two, but three, nights to rock out under the stars at the 2013 Mr Price Pro. Whoever said that too much of a good thing is bad for you, hasn’t been to a concert under the stars with some of South Africa’s BIGGEST and BEST artists! To say it’s going to be one incredible party does not do it the justice it deserves!

So, are you going to be a “Pro-goer” this year? I think it’s pretty safe to say that the question is not debatable!

Have you ever lost your proof or purchase, slip, receipt or whatever document you got given when you

bought something with a guarantee? While it seems to happen more to men than women we are all prone to losing our slips and the end result is generally the same...we lose money. While the new Consumer Protection Act does offer some reprise, stores and service providers are still entitled to ask you to produce your proof of purchase to confirm the purchase date and that it was indeed purchased and this is where you get stuck if you haven’t kept that little piece of paper.

Luckily for us shoppers an innovative team in South Africa, obviously suffering the same pain we all do, has developed a simple yet extremely effective solution to losing your slips. The application, named MySlips (www.myslips.co.za), allows you to take a photo of your slip and email it to a unique email address set up during registration, or you can upload your slip or other important documents from a PC if you are logged into the app. With so many smart phones able to take a photo and email getting your slips into MySlips is a breeze. Once your slip is ‘filed’ you can access it anytime, anywhere through the mobi site developed and the team have thought of all scenarios you might encounter when trying to get something repaired, returned or get a refund.

Apart from managing the warranty period of your purchases and keeping you informed, the mobi application allows you to email or fax a copy of the transaction document to the retailer while you are standing right there. MySlips has confirmed that a majority of retailers will accept you simply presenting the copy of the slip on your phone, but the forwarding and faxing options are there as a backup.

The app also helps you know your CPA rights and will prompt you if you are entitled to a refund or replacement when you look to forward a slip. This way stores can’t force you into accepting repairs when you might want to swap the item or just get a simple refund.

We got to play with the application before it got released and it does exactly what it says it does – make life simpler. The only thing that could have put a damper on the app would have been the price to use the service but again MySlips have been progressive and adopted a simple, affordable price along the lines of apps for

phones. For only R48.00 a year you can store unlimited slips and the cool thing is it also has a full module to handle all your cars warranty and service documents...all included.

Check it out, simply head to www.myslips.co.za and sign up for what we think is one of the smartest apps to come out of South Africa in a while. Well Done MySlips!

To my mind, Scotland is the land of false misconceptions and nasty national clichés. I’d spent my life being told that the Scots were stingy, unfriendly, ugly and hard to understand. So one day I decided to pack my bags and go find out for myself, and hopefully meet William Wallace, bagpipes, kilts, haggis, whisky and all things Scottish along the way.

With lots of enthusiasm but not much cash, we (I, an Englishman and an Aussie girl) decided to begin our merry adventure in Edinburgh, without a doubt the heart of Scotland. Right from the start, what really blew us away about the city was its history – and not the kind confined to museums and dusty old encyclopaedias. It knocks you over as you arrive in the city.

The buildings are grey and imposing, as if they’ve been there for thousands of years (which most of them have). The graveyard we walked past had a sign saying that this

was where the original grave robbers stole bodies for medical research, while the pub that we landed up in that evening had originally been used as a place for hanging people 500 years ago. While most of these events do have a sort of gruesomeness to them, if you relax and soak up the atmosphere, Edinburgh really is an amazing city.

That being said, there’s a lot more to Scotland than just one ageing and rickety city, so it’s worth taking the trouble to see a bit of the countryside. There are many whisky distilleries close to Edinburgh, most of which offer tours at a very reasonable price. A proper whisky fan could well be tempted to tour Scotland with a constant hangover, stumbling from one distillery to the next.

However, there are plenty of other distractions – St Andrews Golf Course is well worth a visit, even if just to say that

you’ve been to the oldest golf course in the world. As you travel further up country, the days seem to blend together.

One day, we were meandering along in no particular hurry when we passed the most beautiful loch, with a whole lot of canoes tied up to a jetty. On the spur of the moment, and despite the rain (yes, even in the middle of summer, it rains just about every day), we piled into the boats for a paddle through the near-freezing water.

Travelling further up country, there are many old castles scattered around, as if to remind you that this is somewhere special. We decided to spend a night at the famous Loch Ness, although not because we expected to find its famous monster.

Travelling during July definitely has its advantages. One of the highlights of the trip was spending an evening sitting overlooking Urquhart Castle (not much more than ruins)

and enjoying a sunset over Loch Ness that carried on until almost midnight.

The town of Inverness, also close to the Loch Ness, was also where I plucked up the courage to eat my first meal of haggis. The contents of this meal are too gruesome to not explain: haggis consists of the stomach bag of a sheep, into which the heart, liver and intestines are placed. Everything is then mixed together and cut up very fine, leaving a meat that tastes remarkably like boerewors.

Served with mashed potato, and without too much thought of the contents, it makes a very good meal.

From Loch Ness we slowly cruised across to the Isle of Skye. The only fact that I had heard about the Isle of Skye was that it had the most expensive toll-road in the whole world, so we were all eager to see what was so special about this place. As it turned

out, the speciality was in the nothingness. We drove around the whole island looking for something of interest – anything really, and only managed to find a sheep farmer with an accent so broad that he really was impossible to understand.

That evening in the local pub, we discovered that the locals were really friendly and were more than happy to have a drink with us – Scots are not stingy or unfriendly, and they don’t hate the English (at least not the one we brought with us).

The next day we drove down towards the English border, stopping off for a last night in Loch Lomond. A castle had been converted into a backpackers, and the chance to finish off the trip with a night in a proper castle with turrets was the perfect way to end our Scottish adventure.

Positioned just 300km from Durban on the Elephant Coast, in the heart of the Kingdom of the Zulu at the gateway to Maputaland, the Three Cities Jozini Tiger Lodge is surrounded by a natural paradise. In addition to game along the shores of the dam itself — including elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, kudu, bushbuck, duiker, steenbok, hyena and warthog — the lodge is close to the Pongolapoort Reserve, the Ndumo, Mkuze and Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Parks and the iSimangaliso Wetland

Park, with its pristine beaches and beautiful coral reefs. Sodwana and Kosi Bay are close by which means that, in addition to enjoying game drives and boat cruises, you have an opportunity to view the vibrantly coloured sea-life while snorkelling among the reefs or scuba diving. Deep sea fishing and whale watching can also be placed on your itinerary.

The main lodge boasts an array of amenities, including a private lounge bar, swimming pool, wellness centre with spa facilities, children’s playroom and a

gymnasium. There is a superb restaurant and, if you would prefer to dine under the stars, dinners in the outdoor boma can also be organised.

Although the Three Cities Jozini Tiger Lodge offers a range of accommodation options, including self-catering units, the place to stay is definitely in the lodge itself.

There are currently 60 guest rooms, which include three deluxe suites, 21 family lofts and 36 classic standard rooms, with another 10 that were completed in October 2012.

In keeping with the style of the lodge, the rooms are trendy, stylishly decorated and offer double beds while the family units have sleeper couches. Each and every room comes with the standard features expected from a luxury hotel — en suite bathrooms and furnished balconies overlooking the water.

The deluxe suites are perfect for a honeymoon or romantic break. The large bedroom comes complete with a four-poster king-sized bed and custom-made linen. The luxurious bathroom has a

large jet bath with a shower and offers a wonderful view. In addition, each suite leads out onto a private balcony offering an opportunity to see hippo and other animals at the water’s edge while you sip that first cup of tea or, later, watch the magnificent sunset.

Family lofts are the fun way for families to experience Africa in comfort. The generously-sized rooms have either double or twin beds, whilst the upstairs lofts have single beds. The en suite bathroom has a separate bath and shower.

If you wish to wake up to a breath-taking vista, get up close and personal with the Big Five, glimpse the magnificence of the humpbacked whale, or patiently cast your line for that tiger fishing experience, there’s no better place to be than the Three Cities Jozini Tiger Lodge.

Africa’s premier travel and tourism expo is returning to the Albert Luthuli Convention Centre

in Durban from 11 to 14 May. This year’s INDABA will once again showcase a wide variety of Southern African tourism products for the international travel trade. Colin Naidoo, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) Communications and Brand Manager at King Shaka International discussed some of the planning and organising that is going to happen before and during this big event and KSIA’s input!

What are ACSA and king Shaka International doing differently this year to prepare for INdABA?We do not want INDABA delegates to wander around on their own and get lost

thus, as we did with the BRICS Summit, there will be branding signs and footprints on the floor so that visitors will know where to go as soon as they set foot in the airport. We want to create a relaxed atmosphere for our visitors, so we will have chill areas set up around the airport, but we want to keep it seamless so we do not disturb the activities of other travellers and operations.

does the airport organize transport for the visitors? The organizers decide on the transport, so between them, SA Tourism and their affiliates will accredit a shuttle service provider. If there happen to be more people than expected, they will bring in accredited taxis and transport services to accommodate all the visitors.

how many people do you expect to fly in for the expo this year?We usually have about 10,000 people flying in for INDABA. They are either from other provinces across South Africa or from other countries.

What are the retailers planning to do for all the visitors? They are all gearing up for the many people

who will be arriving and they will want to make sure that they can accommodate everyone. I think people understand that Durban is an events city and that it offers a wide range of restaurants for visitors to choose from when they want to chill and have a drink.

Where do most of the INdABA visitors come from?We get a lot of visitors from Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Western Cape has a very big stand at INDABA, as does Gauteng. We also have lots of visitors from Mpumalanga who come for the Kruger National Park, plus people flying in from Namibia, Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho and Botswana. All of our provinces are also

well-represented at INDABA. In addition, we get visitors from Europe, India and the United States who come to buy packages at INDABA to sell in their countries.

do you think that the delegates “notice” the airport?Your perception of a city starts with the airport and ends there as well, so we have to make sure that each person’s experience is an impeccable one — we always try to make sure that a visit to our airport is a pleasant one. The delegates who fly in to Durban often have some sort of expectation, starting at the airport. They enjoy being taken around the airport and having someone look after them, so you set a standard.

What are some of the main problems that could occur during INdABA?People lose stuff. They need to make sure that they keep their baggage safe and remember that they are in a public space. The last thing we want is for delegates to say that they were robbed at the airport. So, with this in mind, we have upped our security and we have people who escort the delegates to where they need to go.

t It is that time of the year again where we warm our fathers’ hearts on a cold winter morning

with a box of chocolates, a tight hug and gratitude for all of their love and care throughout the years. This June marks the 41st year since president Richard Nixon made Father’s Day a federal holiday in the United States, and today, children from all over the world honour their fathers with gifts and love on the third Sunday in June.

The history of Father’s Day dates back to the early 1900’s in the United States, where it all began with Mother’s Day. After activist Ann Reeves Jarvis brought together mothers in a small West Virginia town to honour their role in society during the 1860’s, it was not until 1908 when Mother’s Day became a holiday. Jarvis’s daughter, Anna, wanted to honour her own mother by establishing Mother’s Day as a national holiday, and in 1914, president Woodrow Wilson recognised the second Sunday in May as the day where we celebrate our mothers.

However, as word about this festive day for mothers spread, it quickly created

some tension. While some groups called for a day to celebrate fathers as well, others argued that such a day would not produce the same commercial success as Mother’s Day. But in 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd, who was one of six children raised by a widower, called on the Washington State to recognise a special day for fathers. Although she originally wanted to honour fathers on June 5, her own father’s birthday, the celebration was ultimately moved to the third Sunday of June. The young Dodd succeeded in her application, and the Washington State celebrated the very first Father’s Day on June 19, 1910.

The day only became more popular and widespread, and finally in 1972, president Nixon signed Father’s Day into law.

Today, Father’s Day is one of the most popular holidays on the calendar and is celebrated across the globe.

Although Father’s Day is not a public holiday in South Africa, we keep in tradition to the United State’s celebration of the first Father’s Day and also honour our fathers on the third Sunday of June each year.

Other countries like Australia and New Zealand celebrate Father’s Day on the first day of spring - the first Sunday of September - while Germany celebrate “Vatertag”, which somewhat differs to the traditional Father’s Day, on Ascension Day, a federal holiday in the country.

Back on local shores, Father’s Day looks set to be a joyous day for our fathers. Various top restaurants and spas across the country have special packages for dads this Father’s Day.

Father’s Day’s roots may date back more than a century ago in the Washington State, but the tradition of the day is very much alive throughout the world, including here in South Africa. Whether you have a homemade breakfast or an adventurous surprise in mind for your beloved dad, you have the opportunity to show your appreciation for him this Father’s Day.

Father’s dayFor years we have been surprising our dads on Father’s Day, but how did this tradition begin?

The key to success is to change what you do on a daily basis – John Maxwell

As we settle well and truly into 2013, how are you faring in your well-intended health and fitness regime? Unfortunately, for many of us the momentum has waned. And exactly why this happens, I believe, is down to one thing — no change, no results!

With lack of results comes boredom and de-motivation and the excuses come pouring in. Boom… you’re back where you started with bag-loads of fat taking up residence again.

Justin (the Ed) posed a rather cynical question to me just the other day. “Is there seriously a formula for getting into shape, Jenni? Everyone seems to have their own ideas about the best way to get lean and healthy and, quite frankly, it’s frustrating and confusing.”

Agreed, Justin! You are your own laboratory experiment and if something’s not working, why isn’t it? Change the formula! If you’ve been pelting it out on the treadmill or following a diet and nothing’s budged, well um… it probably never will.

According to top life and fitness coach, Douglas Brooks, we are only six steps

away from a life-changing experience! Therefore, if we could discover the vices holding us back from achieving our personal best and endeavour to conquer them, we would be successful in our dreams of becoming lean and healthy. These vices differ for all of us. Excess coffee, sugar, and alcohol spring to mind high on the list, followed closely by lack of water, acidity and the wrong exercise prescription.

For example, you may be someone who survives on copious amounts of coffee every day. This seemingly innocent little habit can actually wreak havoc in the body, causing everything from unstable blood sugar levels and dehydration to anxiety and depression, or elevated insulin and cortisol levels.

Gym as much as you like, but with the above symptoms present you’re unlikely to ever crack the health and fitness ideal! But an informed and conscious decision to eliminate the coffee, or even moderate it to two cups a day, will have your body responding positively until it becomes a habit.

Work on discovering the personal triggers holding you back and aspire to move your body into a permanent new space called “maintenance” by eliminating or moderating these little horrors one at a time, until they no longer have the power

to keep you from your goal of becoming lean, energetic and vibrant. Your body will quite simply wake up and start to work for you!

Here’s a great little formula to work by:• It takes the body 21 days to recognise

change• It takes the body 21 days to internalise

this change• It takes the body 21 days for final

transformation•BOOM — 63 days

Given this formula, we can easily understand why the quick-fix options continue to fail us. Ultimately we have to agree that the safest bet and an almost guaranteed formula is to opt for a change to a healthy lifestyle (which includes finding your personal triggers) along with regular exercise and sticking with this plan for 63 days. Once you feel re-energized, revitalized and alive again, the bags of fat will start offloading — hopefully for good!

When you’re in this space, watch this space!
