    PRESIDENTS REPORT

I am no Bradley Walsh but I was happy to play

    SEPTEMBER 2020

With the whole world in a state of disarray with the pandemic, earlier in the year many of us were forced to stay at home whether we wanted to or not. While this was a difficult time for us all I chose to look for the positive in the situation. The biggest silver lining for me was an awful lot of “Shed Time”. I returned to work in the third week of May having spent around 6 weeks at home. Needless to say I was not idle for much of that time, spending valuable hours/days in the garage. With 95% of my restoration now completed I am looking forward to unveiling my latest Morris project at a club event soon. If you have a story you’d like to share about how you dealt with the lockdown situation, or perhaps of how you worked through as an essential service provider then please get in touch with our magazine editor or a committee member who I’m sure will be happy to publish in a future issue of The Rag. The post lockdown club year has got off to a positive start with a great turnout to our club AGM in July. At which we welcomed 2 new members – Alan Banks & Marilyn Taylor and existing members to the club committee. Also very positive in July, our thanks go to Gordon and Marilyn who organised what looks set to become our annual winter bus trip. See story on page 9.

quizmaster again for our annual Inter-Club Quiz held at the Grouse pub in Lincoln at the end of August. There were a couple more rounds of questions in the pipeline but due to the venue having another event that afternoon we had to cut the quiz a little short. This means I have a head start on the next quiz we host and plenty more episodes of “The Chase” to watch in the meantime. See story on page 7. Our parts shed team saw quite a few visitors this month at a very sunny open day. See story on page 13. As most of you will now be aware, the VCC Swap Meet this year has been cancelled. This is disappointing for all concerned but there is still plenty happening to keep us busy. Keep an eye out for newsletter updates for more info as it becomes available. Happy motoring all Paul

    CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT SEPTEMBER 2020

I would first like to mention the sad news of the passing of Roger Louis. It was nice to see a number of our members at his funeral. A first for me attending a military funeral complete with the last post. Back to Covid-19 lockdown, I personally, like most, had no time to prepare for our time at home in our bubble. We did the garden lawns etc. One morning Claire woke to me getting the deck ready to stain. That was a fun day, having everyone not use the front entrance! All done now (finishing the pergola next!) Claire and I also started working on another project, which I will continue in the future, a bike shed so the Oxford won’t have to share the garage with anyone. I did start the Morris up and took it for short drive down the street, after checking the oil and water. (Yes, and brake fluid). I’m happy to have had a bit of a taste of retirement. It’s tougher than I thought. Maybe I might leave that idea for a few more years to come! Well a lot has gone on since the lockdown. Our AGM for a start. Then we had the Ashburton Bus Trip. Our annual quiz, with the brilliant idea of having a run just before it.

  • The Rag – September 2020 - 7 -

Just recently was our parts shed open day (an excuse for a BBQ maybe Keith). A few things sold and the place is amazing. Last week we had our BMC run organised by Tony. What a delight heading out through the countryside, some red zone and motorway driving to end up at Ray Drury's car collection with Richard Hore playing away on the organ. Well that's a quick rundown of the happenings. We have started to text quick reminders out to all members just before runs or events, this won't replace the Newsletters but add to our methods of getting information out. Well, that's it for me happy motoring. See you soon. Aaron

MORRIS RUN TO LINCOLN & QUIZ

Morris Run and Annual Quiz A very warm end of winter day saw a good turnout of vehicles with the Morris Minor club joining us as they usually do for our combined quiz & as we were having a run before hand they also joined in that. We started at Princess Margaret Hospital carpark and made our way to TaiTapu. A couple of wrong turns due to signposts but we all eventually arrived at the lovely old home of Carol & Jeff Westoby. Inspection of the colourful collection of vehicles was done first, Daimler limo, Commer truck and a Cadillac. We were warmly invited into the 143 year old house, after reading about its history through the family. Very original in places, lovely antique furniture and model car and tractor collections. A rope was needed to climb the steep and narrow staircase due to an unreliable bannister. We left there, with some farm fresh eggs under their arms, taking in points of interest along the rest of the run. Arrived at the Famous Grouse Hotel, Lincoln for a very nice lunch. Finished the great day with the Annual Quiz, enjoyed by all! Morris Owners Club team won so we retained the trophy. Regards Sue Banks

    ASHBURTON BUS TRIP JULY 26TH

Our first stop was at the Planes Historic Village & Museum in Tinwald to visit the Ashburton Fire Museum, where there was a heritage collection of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade. We saw a stunning display of fire engines, equipment and memorabilia. Of most interest was the horse drawn steam powered water pump. The unit was called the Pride of Ashburton and so it should be. All shiny and with manikins at the reins. We had a short screening of the history of the service and its members.

    2020

Once again we departed Wigram Museum car park for our days outing. The day was overcast and so being all together in the coach could only have been better should the driver had better control of the heating system. Gordon had prepared some entertainment for the passengers. He handed out the answer sheet and spread out a number of photographs with numbers on each. We were asked to record against the numbers what type or manufacturer of the vehicles grill and front end displayed. There was lots of amusement and chatter between the seats as each persons thoughts were discussed. The Bristol car with the third headlight recorded the best answers as many thought it might be a Cyclops. The answered were marked at lunch and the chocolate fish was handed out to the winner, Shane & Catherine McSaveney on the return journey.

Meanwhile outside was a restored Rolls-Royce & Dennis fire engine with ladder extended up to 75 ft (only half of it’s maximum) what a site to see. Were given a briefing on the operation of the British vehicle with a German extension ladder that controls the stability of its extension. There was also a few shops in the Historic Village, a pharmacy with some interesting medical equipment from way back, Hannahs Shoe Shop with some interesting footware & a wood turning shop. All being finished it was time to re board the coach for the next visit. Sticking to Gordon’s time schedule we arrived at Bruce McIlroy Ltd. We were given the usual OSH safety briefing before entry to see an arrangement of Rolls-Royce and Bentley marques. This company works exclusively on Rolls Royces and Bentley vehicles of all ages. Their engineers are trained with their respective vehicles under a Heritage Dealership, one of only two in the world. Visitor went between the vehicles and photographed and looked hard up close. A most enjoyable visit. The usual thanks was offered to the company from MOCSI. Onwards again to partake of lunch and drinks at the Fennies Restaurant at the Devon Hotel. A good wholesome roast or fish main was followed with desserts and free coffee/tea. A lot of time was allocated to allow lots of chatter between members. Back in the bus again and off to Rakaia to visit the Honeybee World shop and see the different types of honey and advantages of Manuka honey. Many facts

about honey bees and their pollination for flowers, fruits and vegetables were learn t. The hives (or colonies) are divided into three types: The Queen that runs the whole hive, The Workers that are all female and forage for pollen and nectar, The Drones that are male, are only there to mate with queen before being kicked out come winter. Meanwhile others visited the gift ship and made many purchases. This of course was to the delight of the co-operative as corona had slowed their sales with the loss of tourists. Back on the bus and try to stay awake as all had had a great day. Gordon & Marilyn Taylor

KUSTOMS BREAKFAST – MCLEANS ISLAND – HELD EVERY MONTH The breakfasts have now restarted after Covid19.

This gathering takes place on the first Sunday of every month rain or shine. There are regularly in excess of 400 vehicles at these events. Each month there is a feature vehicle nominated by the club. Previous feature cars include Mustangs, Camaros, Tri-5 Chevys, Pick-ups and Mopars. But it is not all about big American V8s. All classic cars are very welcome. A feast for the tummy & the eyes (to see the various cars on display.)

PARTS SHED OPEN DAY SEPTEMBER 20TH 2020

A sunny spring day was the setting for our gathering at the club parts shed. Some keen treasure hunters, myself included, enjoyed a look through our collection of rusty gold. There are a few folks I would like to thank for their efforts, firstly Keith and Dave, who have been doing great work organising parts and the club library. Secondly, Jan and Mike for bringing tea and coffee facilities as well as sausage-sizzle supplies. And thirdly to Dave Yates for not only the site but also for his assistance moving heavy objects with his excavator and lifting jib. It was great to see some enthusiastic new members among the seasoned hunters, and we wish them all well with their Morris restorations. All in all it was a great day and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who came away with a gem or two. Here are a couple of pics taken on the day. I sent the selfie to Dawn so she could see what she was missing. For some reason old engines don’t have the same appeal to her as they do to me, funny that! Paul Jones

    OBITUARY TO ROGER LOUIS

Roger Louis a member & committee member of the MOCSI for quite some time passed away on 17th September at the age of 82. On his funeral card was the poem called ‘The Dash’ which is about the dash between birth & death by Linda Ellis. Very appropriate for Roger.

I would like to share the contents of Rogers dash with others.

Roger spent a lot of time in his lifetime with athletics. As he grew through the teenage years he competed in NZ competitions for weight lifting. He became NZ champ in his lifting class. He continued for many yrs competing in Hammer Throw. He followed this sporting with loads of running and biking. He often claimed many thousands of miles completed of his group of up nine bikes.

He was an active member in many clubs over the years that include Racing Pigeons, Vintage car Club, Photography, and Morris owners club, welding & turning skills. He was the patron of the Royal New Zealand Air force Association.

scanners to listen to what was going on in his community.

Roger loved to tell stories and jokes whenever he had an audience. We became quite used to him telling or sharing a joke at all our MOCSI outings.

We will all miss his jovial personality and friendship.
