Lions, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14 B:

It is hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us already. I hope that everyone had a

wonderful Thanksgiving and was able to spend time with loved ones, especially those

who you might not see as often as you would like for various reasons. Soon Christmas

and Chanukah will be upon us. This is the time of the year, where among other activities,

we exchange gifts. As Lions we are very fortunate that we have the opportunity to give

gifts all year round. We get to give the gift of improved sight and hearing through our eye

glass and hearing aid programs for those otherwise who would not be able to afford them.

We make summer vacations possible for those who might not be able to have one through

our support of Beacon Lodge.

We help feed those who might otherwise go hungry through our generous support of the

area food banks, distribution of food baskets, and children’s back pack programs.

Through our support of Operation Safety Net we are helping the plight of the homeless by offering medical services. We

help make our communities look a little nicer by planting trees, improving our parks and cleaning up littered areas.

Through the Lions Diabetes Foundation at UPMC McKeesport Hospital we are helping to battle a disease that negatively

affects the quality of life for about 13 % of all Pennsylvanians and has staggering impact on our health care costs.

As Lions we also serve our youth by hosting Halloween parades, Christmas with Santa breakfasts, and Easter egg hunts.

Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos and friends of District 14-B,

Happy Holidays! How many time have you heard that? The period from Thanksgiving

through January 1 is considered the Holiday Season bringing happy times during Ashura

(Muslim), Bodhi Day (Buddhist), Hanukkah (Jewish), Christmas (Christian), Kwanzaa

(African-American and pan African), New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. These are usually happy times for most

Americans and indeed, all over the world.

But for many they are not happy times. For some they are sad times, and for many, they are no different than any other

times throughout the year. Parents don’t have money to buy gifts, clothes or even food for their children. People live on

the streets with only what they can carry in shopping bags or grocery carts. Senior Citizens live in nursing homes with no

one to visit them during times that they remember as joyous, but are no longer so.

The Holidays are an excellent time for Lions and Lions Clubs to embrace our motto, “We Serve” and provide needed

services to those in need. Consider planning a service project during the Holiday Season.

• Purchase a Holiday Food basket for a family without the means to have a nice Family Holiday meal.

• Visit a shut in, providing friendship and friendly conversation to someone who has no one.

• Go Christmas Caroling to a nursing home or Senior Center. I’ve done this. I remember doing it in high school

with my German Club and bringing tears to an old German man by singing Oh! Tannenbaum, in Deutsch.

• Visit a Veterans Hospital and just sit and talk to a Veteran.

• Collect coats, socks and blankets to give to the homeless. To make it easier, the University of Pittsburgh Lions

Club has a coat drive every year.

• Donate socks and underwear to school children whose families just don’t have the money to buy these

inexpensive but necessary pieces of clothing.

• Ring a bell for the Salvation Army.

• Help the Marines with their Toys for Tots Campaign.

There are so many ways to help during the Holiday Season. All it takes is a little thought and a commitment to do

something.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s greatest service organization, and the Lions Clubs and Lions who make it up do

great things every day.

Happy Holidays to everyone.

Lions Club of Kathmandu, the first Lions Club in Kathmandu and second in the

country, Nepal, was established in 1972 in the initiation of 50 young leaders of the

society. The club was brought into foundation as inspired from the slogan ‘WE

humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services throughout community

involvement and international co-operation. The club was chartered on 12th July

1972 by the International Association of Lions Clubs.

The Mon River Fleet Lions came out in full force on October 28 to collect for White Cane Day at Sam’s Club in

West Mifflin. Club President Kathy Yurik spent the day showing support of those members above who

participated in the White Cane Day initiative. In addition, the Club’s newest member Miss River is shown with

her trainer Michele Shepler, also a Mon River Fleet Lion. Monies collected by the Club are distributed year-

end to Lion organizations within District 14-B Allegheny County and Lions International.

The Mon River Fleet Lions Club inducted its newest member at its November 17 meeting. Past District

Governor Alice Jones inducts Gina Rosso as her sponsor Dee Connor looks on. The Club continues to grow to

77 members and is Allegheny County’s largest Lions Club. Welcome aboard Gina Rosso!

When does something old become something new? No, this is not a brain teasing riddle, but rather the story

of the oldest chartered Lions Club in Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Host Lions Club, which was chartered in

1920. For many years this proud old Lions club had been is a state of decline. Many of its members were retired

and no longer had any reason to travel to downtown Pittsburgh for meetings and many had transferred to clubs

located in or near the communities where they lived. Some of the more active members sadly and unexpectedly

passed away and others had just lost interest because there was nothing to keep them interested.

At the same time Blind & Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh, an organization which District 14B has

had long partnership, moved from Homestead to a new state of the art facility in the uptown section of

Pittsburgh. This facility was the only stop in Pennsylvania that IPIP Bob Corlew made during his Centennial

Bus Tour. During this visit the idea of rebuilding the Pittsburgh Host Lions Club with employees from Blind

and Vision was born and after several months this idea has finally come to fruition. On November 10, 2017, DG

Geoff Temple had the privilege of inducting nine new members who are employees of Blind and Vision, and

one new member who works with Club President Bill Lestitian. The following are the newly inducted members

of the Pittsburgh Lions Club: Amy Dewalt, Giovana Haider, Brenda Lembo, Tony Leonzio, Karen Murphy,

Carole Nadzam, Anne Parys, Erika Petach, Jim Rutherford, and Cindy Smith. Special thanks to Lion Bill

Lestitian for agreeing to be Club President and Leslie Montgomery for agreeing to be Club Secretary/Treasurer.

Leslie had been a member of the Bethel Park Lions Club and is the V.P. of external affairs for Blind & Vision.

Special thanks go to GMT Dan Hupp, IPDG Rich Keller, 1st VDG Kirby Marchand, Lion Mike Zaken, Blind

Vision CEO, and Lion Erika Petach for all their hard work and dedication for helping create this transformation.

Immediately following the Salute to

Santa parade in McKeesport, area

children and their families attended

the kids party at The Palisades where

they were served lunch and the Parade

Queen and Princess were announced.

Children were entertained by Shriners

Clowns, and each child had a personal

visit with Santa (the role was once

again reprised by Past President Tony

Ura). Members of the McKeesport

Lions Club serve the lunch and

participate in various roles in the

planning and execution of the parade

On 11/26/17 the McKeesport Lions Club held a Toys for

Tots breakfast buffet to collect new toys for the Toys for

Tots drive. Many club members were on hand to accept

donations, fill coffee cups, cook, and clear tables. The

donations collected will help brighten Christmas for

many area children who would otherwise not have a

nice holiday. Patrons who donated either a toy or

monetary donation received a bag filled with homemade

cookies made by club members, and were eligible to

win a large holiday themed basket donated by a club

member.

Patty Kotco, a Specialist at American Diabetes Association gave a very upbeat and informative

presentation as part of our speaker series. Patty delivered some very real information like (quote) “diabetes

Research and education have dramatically decreased diabetes-related complications. Approximately 300,000

people in Western Pennsylvania have diabetes. An additional 100,000+ are still undetected. It is estimated that

one out of every three children born in the United States will be directly affected by diabetes.

Congratulations to Vayda Caruso – 12 years old – a 6th grader at Saint Maria Goretti Elementary School –

Friendship Campus in Bloomfield. The poster was submitted by the Bloomfield-Lawrenceville Lions Club at

the District 14B Cabinet Meeting on Saturday, November 11, 2017.

Vayda’s quote is: “The Future of Peace: I have two sides of my poster, dark black and white and a brightly

colored side. On the black and white side, I have Martin Luther King, Gandhi and Rosa Park who fought for

peace. On the bright side I have 5 countries that represent how far we have gotten for peace so that peace will

reign over the world as our “Future of Peace” one day.”

Congratulations to Vayda Caruso

Her poster will now be sent to Council Chair Larry Edwards to compete against all the other District winners in

What is Pittsburgh Mercy’s Operation Safety Net?

Operation Safety Net® outreach teams make “house calls” to people who are experiencing homelessness in Allegheny

County. We visit them in camps, alleys, under bridges and overpasses, and other places they call “home.”

We believe we can best address needs when we go to the people, meet them where they are in life, and show them we care

– not just in our words, but more importantly, in our actions. This gives us a clear view of the realities and everyday

challenges they face.

Our outreach teams consist of one or more of the following:

• An outreach specialist

• A clinical volunteer

• A medical student

• A non-clinical support person to assist with social services.

Our outreach teams offer:

• Basic medical care

• Boots and sleeping bags (in winter)

• Food

• Water

• Socks

• Over-the-counter medicine, antibiotics, and medicine to help manage chronic conditions like diabetes, heart

problems, and high blood pressure

• Referrals to health care and other human services

• Referrals to housing through the Allegheny Link at 1-866-730-2368.

Our teams deliver services on street rounds, on our Mobile Medical Unit, at our Wellspring Drop-In Center, at the Winter

Shelter, and at Pittsburgh Mercy Family Health Center, our primary care center.

By meeting basic human needs, developing trust, and fostering deep, personal connections, we help those we serve to find

solutions to other problems that affect their quality of life.
