Heythrop Park resort, Oxfordshire6 - 8 July 2011
Welcome to Conference 2011 at Heythrop Park in the Cotswolds
We are delighted to welcome all of you to the afPE National Physical Education and School Sport Conference at this beautiful venue in the Cotswolds. afPE is committed to providing high quality professional learning (PL) for all physical education and school sport (PESS) professionals; we are also determined to maintain the high quality accommodation that our delegates have now come to expect at an acceptable cost. This venue is deemed to be outstanding and offers the very best in value for money and provides an aesthetic, calm and peaceful environment in which to engage in high quality PL as well as to network and relax.
This academic year has possibly been one of the most challenging for several decades but as ever the PESS profession has risen to the challenges and we know the future will prove to be, not only exciting but also, hugely successful as well. The comprehensive spending review and subsequent events signalled fundamental changes to school sport partnerships in England and we have all had to adjust and re-focus. The review of the National Curriculum is underway and the Ofsted framework is also under revision but the message is the same for both; they will be much slimmer and in the case of the National Curriculum there is to be greater focus on competition. afPE has played a role in both reviews and will continue to represent your views at all levels. A real cause for celebration is the inclusion of Physical Education as a statutory subject alongside English, Mathematics and Science.
Planning this year’s conference has been as challenging as ever because we aim to ensure that we provide appropriate and relevant PL which ensures that PESS professionals continue to lead the way in transforming the educational experience for young people. We are sure you will be delighted to find updates from Wales and Scotland in your conference pack. These are both interesting and informative and our thanks go to the Home Countries for providing this information.
The conference this year has a new look in order to meet the needs of all PESS professionals. We have put together a variety of opportunities so that you can select your PL which is also within your budget as well as meeting your needs. With strands focusing on strategic leadership, practical applications and research all underpinned by pedagogy and health you will be able to select either one strand or move in and out of strands that best suit your needs and learning style.
As you will see from the title “Physical Education driving the Big Society: looking, thinking and moving forward” we are embracing the Government’s commitment to driving improvement at local level across the United Kingdom.
We hope that whether a day delegate, or resident you will take the opportunity to visit the learning and interactive zones and indulge yourselves by using the extensive facilities at this beautiful venue.
During the conference you will hear inspirational speakers, take part in interactive learning sessions, visit the learning zone, network with colleagues and enjoy a full and entertaining social programme. We will be particularly delighted to welcome you for a pre gala dinner reception on Thursday 7th July.
As a small charity we are always indebted to our conference sponsors and supporters, and we are delighted to welcome the exhibitors and business associates and thank them for their contribution to the Learning Zone which is so highly valued by our delegates. Our thanks also to the Conference Planning Group for their on-going commitment to the conference and to the afPE staff and Sally and Mary from Equity Communications for their support in helping to create what we hope will be an excellent professional development opportunity for you all.
We hope you have a stimulating and enjoyable conference.

Physical Education Driving the Big Society 6
Wednesday 6th July 10.45mick WatersFacing the Challenge: ‘The place of Physical Education in the Big Society’
Professor Mick Waters currently works with the schools in the Black Country Challenge in raising standards in the West Midlands. He works with schools in Sheffield in innovative approaches to learning and on several other initiatives to push the boundaries for making learning better. He is also president of the Curriculum Foundation, which seeks to promote a voice for the power and potential of the whole curriculum. He is chair of 360 People, a company working to encourage young people to be involved in assessing their progress in the development of skills for adult life and employment. Mick is a patron of Heads, Teachers and Industry (HTI), which seeks ways to build reciprocal understanding between sectors.
Previously, he worked at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority as Director of Curriculum taking a leading role in helping schools to rethink their approach to curriculum design and influencing national policy on aspects of the national curriculum.
Before joining QCA, Mick was Chief Education Officer for the City of Manchester. In a challenging education environment schools he worked hard to break the cycle of urban deprivation, promoting a wide and rich curriculum and encouraging all learners to achieve as much as possible. Key agendas included the development of joint children’s services, the 14-19 strategy, the employment and skills dimension and configuring all this around Building Schools for the Future.
Mick believes that learning should be treasured and valued and that it needs to be shaped to fit with children’s lives. People in schools need to set understandings of their children alongside the learning they should meet to create learning that is irresistible.

What happens when a part of us is amplified? What happens if that part of us happens to be hate? This is a narrative piece looking at the extremity of hate and how it can manifest and be passed onto others like a virus. What happens if someone takes it too far? Two gangs collide through hate but come together through tragedy.

Friday 8th July 9.45Tasha Danversmoving forward to 2012 and beyond
Tasha took up athletics at Sydenham Girls School, and started juggling her athletics and studies at Westminster University and Bromley College. She was then offered an Athletics scholarship at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
In 2000, she became a Sydney Olympic Games Finalist in both her individual event and the relay. This achievement made Tasha the second woman in British history to ever compete in a 400m Hurdles Olympic Final. In 2003, she set a personal best time of 54.02, which placed her second on the UK all-time list behind Sally Gunnell, former World Record holder.
In 2004, she took time off to give birth to her son Jaden Smith born 8 December. Seven months after giving birth, in 2005, Tasha was back on the track competing at her National Championships. In 2006, not
only was she back to being ranked No.6 in the World, but she became the Commonwealth Games Silver medallist.
In 2008, overcoming many setbacks and injuries, on 21 August she put the past behind her and stepped onto the Olympic Podium to receive her Bronze medal.
Tasha is an amazing athlete with a great potential to be on the podium again at the London Olympic Games in 2012. Inspiring others to their own personal success is one of Tasha’s passions outside of Track & Field. Her determination, compassion, and desire to see others succeed make her one of life’s winners.

Professional Learning
Physical Education and School Sport have received unprecedented funding over the last decade and much has been achieved as a result, which has impacted on the lives of most young people. The profession is now faced with an enormous but not insurmountable challenge which is to keep physical education at the heart of school life.
From April 2011 funding for all professional development will be devolved to schools. Physical Education and School Sport will not have separate government funding so it is important that as professionals you secure your share of any funding to support you in your role.
Teachers and coaches involved in delivering both within and outside the curriculum will need support to ensure standards are not only maintained, but also continue to improve. Working and networking will be an effective way of continuing with the excellent work already done, and afPE will provide support for members within Higher Education Institutions, Local Authorities, School Sport Partnerships, schools, consultants and private providers.
There are many schools who will provide testament to the fact that high quality physical education and school sport have had a marked effect on standards right across the curriculum and the head teachers in these schools will surely stay committed to keeping our subject at the core of their school life.
We are working across the landscape to ensure standards in physical education are not only maintained but also continue to improve. We appreciate that it is not enough to simply offer more of the same; we need to find new ways to inspire different groups of PESS professionals. The association is committed to providing colleagues with a high quality experience
Developing and delivering a co-ordinated programme of high quality PESS opportunities has involved working with various partners in order to assess local need and to ensure that there is increased participation, a wider access to provision, high quality in all settings and the opportunity for our adults supporting learning colleagues to access education and training.
Our programme of professional learning provides a network of opportunities to meet the needs of head teachers, teachers, teaching assistants and adults supporting learners. We are committed to offer you bespoke opportunities that meet your specific needs and to provide you with the tools and expertise you need to deliver high quality physical education and school sport. This could be from purchasing resources, having one-to-one support, attending one our courses, seminars or conferences.
How can we help?
We have a dedicated PL team who will allocate you a high quality trainer from our team of quality assured national trainers, provide you with high quality delegate resources, support material, presentations and certificates of attendance, offer you follow-up PL to support your role within PESS and ensure our commitment as a charity to offer you best value for money.
We have a variety of exciting opportunities available to you and these include:
