The Wiltshire Fairtrade Coalition is a network of groups, organisations and individuals working to promote Fairtrade within the County and is

hosted by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. It is an expanding network seeking to celebrate the work of individuals and groups who have often been promoting a fairer trade system for many years. The Coalition supports the various groups throughout the county through meetings and a quarterly newsletter; one of its main tasks is to co-ordinate activities during Fairtrade Fortnight each year which, this year, runs from 25 February to 10 March.

Fairtrade is about more than tea and coffee; it is a way to support producers directly and to lobby for fairer trade rules for the poorest people. Certification offers a fair price, an additional premium to the community to develop local services and has an element of environmental protection. The fairtrade symbol is a guarantee that the required standards have been attained. Each year there is a theme for the campaigns and the theme this year is ‘Take a step in 2013’.

A wide range of activities has been organised by the many groups, large and small across the county, a few of which are listed below. Bradford on Avon has invited two Palestinian Farmers to visit them and Trowbridge is holding a Big Breakfast with Rotary. Devizes is hosting a discussion entitled ‘Do we have to choose between Fairtrade and local?’ Schools have been invited to take part in competitions and will be hearing about Fairtrade in their assemblies and many churches will have Fairtrade stalls and coffee mornings.

The two week campaign is the main focus of activity throughout the year but groups continue to put on events and offer talks all year long. Fairtrade Fortnight coincides with Climate Week (4-10 March) and some of the activities reflect that with talks and joint activities with other groups. A celebratory event for supporters will take place in Warminster after the end of the Fortnight for groups to share their experiences. -Kelley Barnett

The Hungerford/Marlborough Adviser, Friday, February 22 to March 1, 2013

F.J. “Barney” Wilson who died on Sunday, February 10th was an amazing man.

Afflicted by polio at an early age, he looked life in the eye and with the help and support of his loving wife Jane, through sheer drive and determination, climbed and conquered many mountains of life.

As a child, Barney’s family took him out of Singapore ahead of the Japanese on a KLM flight to Darwin. He was educated at Geelong College in Australia where amongst many achievements, he coxed the school’s First Rowing Eight.

His exceptional brain led him to become a lawyer in the leading international law firm of Slaughter and May later becoming a partner and continuing until his death as a respected and valued consultant in the specialist field of pensions.

Walking with the use of full-length crutches before later becoming mostly wheelchair-bound, he became a formidable car rally driver, driving with hand controls in his beloved Riley and Mini Cooper S. With rowing in his blood, he rarely missed a

Henley Regatta. Additionally he was an accomplished fisherman and a wine connoisseur with a magnificent cellar.

Always keen to travel, his knowledge of the world was unusually broad and he was interested in all people and everything around him.

He and Jane came to live in Hungerford in 1984 and they soon made their mark in the community with much enthusiasm and support of many pursuits, making and gathering friends around them.

Barney Wilson was a Hungerford Town and Manor commoner and water bailiff.

He was a great supporter of many local causes and never failed to back Hungerford Rotary Club’s charitable events.

Hungerford’s Constable Greg Furr said: “Barney was a very good friend and an enthusiastic supporter of

the Town & Manor of Hungerford, he was a commoner and great fisherman and had been a most reliable member of our fishery committee for many years. His wise counsel great companionship and wicked sense of humour will be missed by us all”.

Barney died in the Royal Berkshire Hospital having been admitted with a respiratory ailment.

His funeral will be at St Lawrence’s Church Hungerford at noon on Tuesday, February 26th.

With Ted’s passing we see the demise of the last of Hungerford’s pre-war firemen. He was a very special person as he had reached his century only in December

2012 and received the long-awaited telegram from The Queen.I hope I am not in error but in my last years as Town Mayor

1999/2000 there were three townspeople who achieved this milestone and I think there has been quite a gap until Ted Stevens died.

Born in 1912 he became a member of the Old Volunteer Fire Brigade in 1928 aged only 16. This was achieved as his father was OIC in those days before national and county brigades.

He was also a qualified water engineer and in the 30’s he was asked to take management of the Lambourn station, both waterworks in the two towns being under control of Hungerford Rural District Council.

He remained at Lambourn until early 1950 when he returned to Hungerford Water Works and almost at once he rejoined the fire brigade. He joined on a Tuesday in March on the very day that I joined the brigade and we attended a great many incidents together.

Ted was a splendid comrade with great competence and a very ready sense of humour. Obviously the peak incident being the James Mill fire in June 1960, the largest fire the town ever experienced and because of the special problems with a 4-storey mill it continued to break out for almost six weeks.

I can highlight a totally different incident which shows the problems of rural fire stations. A Saturday afternoon, three firemen attend a cart shed at Inkpen well alight. Ted, John Pike and myself attend and the fire was well under control before Newbury arrived.

I would like to think that the whole town will mourn his passing. He was a man with an indomitable spirit and it is only recently that he stopped walking from his home in Sanden Close into the High Street to draw his pension and do a little shopping.

So I say: “Let us all say farewell to a true man of Hungerford”.

AKORN CELEBRATES 10TH BIRTHDAY!

Akorn Kitchens Ltd are pleased to announce that they have reached the grand old age of 10 as a Limited company on 19th February 2013.

The three directors Diana,Wayne and John met whilst working in Shaston Kitchens a Winchester based company who had premises in Hambridge Road. When that company decided they could still trade adequately from their main site they closed the Newbury branch making them all redundant. After a short sojourn the trio decided to strike out on their own taking on the premises in The Paddock off Hambridge Road where their workshop and showroom remain today.

On their formation in 2003 their advertisements read ‘Newbury people creating Kitchens in Newbury for Newbury people’ and this is still their boast. There is no anonymous company miles away behind them, all the cabinetry for each Kitchen is cut from board and assembled in their workshop enabling them to make items that are not ‘off the peg ‘in terms of sizes to really make full advantage of the space available plus the advantage of buying many of their doors in any size required. They also have their own door spraying facility so a door can be painted in any colour the client requires. Simply bring in a sample of your colour of choice and a company in Andover will match it for you to create your unique Kitchen .This not only allows flexibility in the Kitchen but can also be advantageous in Bedroom or Home Study areas too, where space is of a premium and individuality counts. All this and very competitive prices too!

Akorn also offer a free no obligation design service at a time convenient to the client either in their home or at the Showroom.

Further information can be found on their website www.akornkitchens.co.uk or by phoning the office on 01635 49448 or emailing [email protected]

For more details see the advertisement on cover.

Best selling novelist Joanna Trollope will be talking about her latest book (just released in paperback) in an event organised by The Hungerford Bookshop. The author,

who was awarded an OBE, and has written over seventeen books including The Village Affair, The Rector’s Wife, and The Choir this time explores what it is like to be married to a soldier. The book, A Soldier’s Wife, asks the question: Does marrying a soldier always have to mean that you are not marrying a man, but a regiment?

The author will look forward to answering questions from the audience and signing copies of her books on Tuesday February 26th at 7pm in Hungerford Town Hall. Tickets are available from The Hungerford Bookshop.

The iconic red telephone boxes – would you miss them if they weren’t there? Would you notice... would you care? Having been decommissioned some time ago, they now

stand empty and vulnerable to vandalism. The Manton box is in good repair, but the one on the London Road is in particularly poor condition, with missing glass and some graffiti. Marlborough Town Council’s Property Committee put forward ideas and welcomed Cllr Andy Ross’s suggestion: to move them into the town’s public gardens, as a feature. Cllr Val Compton observed that some towns use them to display tourist information leaflets. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact the Town Council offices.

ICON OR EYESORE?The Committee plans to renovate the town’s bus shelters this

year. Mayor Cllr Edwina Fogg pointed out that they are structurally sound, but in need of a cosmetic makeover. Cllr Graham Francis hoped that a new shelter, with seating, would be installed on the south side of the High Street. Among other items, councillors discussed the Town Hall’s downstairs kitchen, which is in dire need of renovation. Committee chairman Cllr Guy Loosmore asked the Town Clerk to investigate costs and all of these items will be taken forward for more detailed discussion at the next Property Committee meeting on Monday 25 March. - Shirley Pryor

600 SIGN FOR ELECTRIFICATION600 signatures had already been collected in favour of electrification of the Hungerford Railway line, Cr Alana Wilson told the last Hungerford Town Council meeting. The petition may be viewed and signed at HungerfordTown Council office.

POTHOLE PROBLEM IN HUNGERFORDCr Roger Thompson has drawn Hungerford Town Council’s attention to extensive potholes in the town, brought about in severe weather.

LIST OF TOWN WALKS SOUGHTHungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee is seeking suggested walks in and around Hungerford for submission to the town’s new tourism and development group. The mayor, Cr Martin Crane told the last committee meeting there was a need to tell people how they can get around and enjoy the town better.

A war has been declared on non-native invasive species! You may not even have realised that we are being invaded. Such is the devious nature of our enemy. Help is at hand with Avon’s Army of Volunteers, but we still need more brave souls ready to fight the scourge of invasive species on our river.

This dedicated, if disparate, group gathered its troops recently at Salisbury’s Guildhall to draw up their battle plans. Avon’s Army of Volunteers includes representatives from parish councils, landowners, charities such as Wiltshire, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and Dorset Wildlife Trusts and even a representative from Bristol Zoo.

This project funded by the Environment Agency as part of their commitment to restore rivers, both physically and for water quality.

Leading the attack, Sam Stork, of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Source to Sea project said “Over the past months, local landowners have been helping us to reconnoitre, gather intel, and generally spy on our enemy, the invasive species. And now that we know who they are, and how many there are, we are ready to take the fight to them. We will fight them in the river. We will fight them on the river banks. We will not rest until the River Avon is cleared of non-native species again. This is our finest year. 2013 will go

down in history as the year that Britons helped their wildlife fight back.”

That intel – collected over 300km of the river - resulted in over 2000 records of harmful, non-native species currently invading our stunning river. It must be stopped before our wildlife suffers irreparable damage. That’s why Wiltshire, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and Dorset Wildlife Trusts are asking you to volunteer. Help us to fight these invaders. Come out and work along our river, its tributaries, chalk streams and waterways. Be part of our Avon’s Army of Volunteers and turn back the tide of the invaders. They do not fight with guns, but with sweat, with gloved hands and waders on their legs.

So far, 65 brave souls have stepped forward, representing parish and city councils, landowners, anglers, government bodies such as Natural England and the Environment Agency, the business community and ordinary people who care about the River Avon.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Sam Stork ended saying “This is our last chance. We either fight for the Avon or we lose part of our natural heritage that is currently struggling to survive. Like any good Army, we have a solid plan of action. What we need now are the troops, the volunteers to come out and help us fight.” -Kelly Barnett
