During the t r ip, Holmes explains to Watson that James Barc lay was the commander of the R o y a l M a l l o w s . Barclay married a very beautiful woman named Nancy Devoy and their thirty year marriage had been considered a happy couple.

The previous day, Mrs Barc lay and Mss. Morrison had left Lachine House.

When Mrs Barclay returned she asked the maid for some tea.

The coachman ran outside and

entered the room through the glass

doors which opened onto the lawn.

He found Mrs Barclay had fainted

and was laying upon a couch.

Colonel Barclay lay on the floor near

the corner of the fender. The Colonel

was dead with blood around his

head and a terrible look of fear upon

his face.

Miss Morrison tell that the night of the Colonel's death, she and Mrs Barclay b a c k t o h o m e together. As they walked a severely crippled man was coming towards them. As he passed he recognised Mrs Barclay and called out her name. Mrs Barclay
