Have just finished visiting the Adair county schools and looking after their sanitary conditions II find the health conditions good They generally have good watersome have to go quite a distance to get it but the most qf them have good neighbors who will not deny good water to the children of the schools 1 found the attendance generally bad It is awful to think how little attention i is paid to the schools by the trustees and the parents We have had under I the old law about 270 men who have been elected or appointed trustees whose business it is to look after the condition of the public school We also have a superintendent who receives the money from the State and pays it out to the teacher and the name of her office implies that she too has to see how the schools are getting along- I kept a recordof the attendance at the various schools and wish it pub- lished ¬ so that the people can see how the work of the public schools is being done The number of pupirchildren in thet county as given to me by teachers is 5095 The number in attendance is 1605 the number absent was 3190 making the attendance 37J per cent This includes all the schoolstaking the colored schools separately we have in alU >78 with an attendance of 128 or just 25 per cent s 1 found one only with no attendance and that was in a good neighborhood with 53 in the district I found two with only one present in each These were colored districts Among the whites I found one district with 79 and only 4 present I found two others with only 4 and yet I do riot blame the teachers They seemed to bedoing the best theycould In talkingwith them I found some of them murderers of the Kings English One of them whom I had met only once before a year ago when I asked her if she knew me an ¬ swered 0 yes I knodeyou as soon as I seed you A verycommon express ¬ ion among them is 1 taken so and so I attributed this fault to the ex- aminers ¬ They should I think give tlem oral examinations on grammer if it is lawful to do so Of course they know better but they should be taught to be more particular and not make so many blunders in the presence of their schoqls Now I see no splu ion of this state of things tyut in a rigid cpmpulsory school law We have a compulsory law now but it wont compuise We once had a law requiring the teacher to be dis ¬ missed if he did not keep 25 per cent r in attendance 1 do not know what has become of that Jaw It was a very poor law and ought nevjer to have been enacted It made the teachers respon ¬ sible for the non attendance of the pupils and made no provision for the 75 per cent not attending One trouble with our common school systenis the teachers are paid just as much for the children who do not at ¬ tend school as for those who do The teachers are paid in our county the magnificent sum 15000 or more and this sum divided by the number attend ¬ ing would be 8 dollars each- I do not want to close this communi ¬ cation without saying something re- specting ¬ the school houses Some are good some are bad and some are in ¬ different One house I visited was made of logs and the door was off the hinges the stove was nearly burned up had no shutter to the door and two of the windows to the house had not even sash taJhem That young lady teach ¬ er went from Columbia was bright and cheerful and making no complaint She had eight little children huddled aroupd that thing that had once been a stove and not a word of complaint from any of them If there had been a case of diptheria> or scarletina in that neighborhood I would have sus- pended ¬ that school and sent the child ¬ ren and teacher home And yet keep ¬ ing those children there under the cir- cumstances ¬ was much more detriment- al to their health than the other would have been for that day the thermom ¬ eter registered below 20 Now let us hear from the people on this subject especially the parents the teachers schoolsuperin7lt l Public Sale < > NextrSaturday afternoon at 2 oclock there will be sold A Visit to Adair County SchoolsV

Editor NewsI Have just finished visiting the Adair

county schools and looking after theirsanitary conditions II find the healthconditions good They generally havegood watersome have to go quite adistance to get it but the most qf themhave good neighbors who will not denygood water to the children of theschools

1 found the attendance generally badIt is awful to think how little attention

i is paid to the schools by the trusteesand the parents We have had under

I the old law about 270 men who havebeen elected or appointed trusteeswhose business it is to look after thecondition of the public school We alsohave a superintendent who receivesthe money from the State and pays itout to the teacher and the name of heroffice implies that she too has to seehow the schools are getting along-

I kept a recordof the attendance atthe various schools and wish it pub-lished

¬

so that the people can see howthe work of the public schools is beingdone The number of pupirchildren inthet county as given to me by teachersis 5095 The number in attendance is1605 the number absent was 3190making the attendance 37J per centThis includes all the schoolstaking thecolored schools separately we havein alU>78 with an attendance of 128 orjust 25 per cent s

1 found one only with no attendanceand that was in a good neighborhoodwith 53 in the district I found twowith only one present in each Thesewere colored districts Among thewhites I found one district with 79 andonly 4 present I found two others withonly 4 and yet I do riot blame theteachers They seemed to bedoing thebest theycould In talkingwith themI found some of them murderers of theKings English One of them whom Ihad met only once before a year agowhen I asked her if she knew me an¬

swered 0 yes I knodeyou as soon asI seed you A verycommon express ¬

ion among them is 1 taken so andso I attributed this fault to the ex-

aminers¬

They should I think givetlem oral examinations on grammerif it is lawful to do so Of course theyknow better but they should be taughtto be more particular and not make somany blunders in the presence of theirschoqls

Now I see no splu ion of this state ofthings tyut in a rigid cpmpulsory schoollaw We have a compulsory law nowbut it wont compuise We once hada law requiring the teacher to be dis¬

missed if he did not keep 25 per cent r inattendance 1 do not know what hasbecome of that Jaw It was a verypoor law and ought nevjer to have beenenacted It made the teachers respon ¬

sible for the non attendance of thepupils and made no provision for the75 per cent not attending

One trouble with our common schoolsystenis the teachers are paid just asmuch for the children who do not at¬

tend school as for those who do Theteachers are paid in our county themagnificent sum 15000 or more andthis sum divided by the number attend ¬

ing would be 8 dollars each-

I do not want to close this communi ¬

cation without saying something re-

specting¬

the school houses Some aregood some are bad and some are in¬

different One house I visited wasmade of logs and the door was off thehinges the stove was nearly burned uphad no shutter to the door and two ofthe windows to the house had not evensash taJhem That young lady teach ¬

er went from Columbia was bright andcheerful and making no complaintShe had eight little children huddledaroupd that thing that had once been astove and not a word of complaintfrom any of them If there had beena case of diptheria> or scarletina inthat neighborhood I would have sus-

pended¬

that school and sent the child¬

ren and teacher home And yet keep ¬

ing those children there under the cir-

cumstances¬

was much more detriment-al to their health than the other wouldhave been for that day the thermom ¬

eter registered below 20 Now let ushear from the people on this subjectespecially the parents the teachers
