Key Words: Writing, Recount Text , Peer Reviewing.

Writing as a productive skill is a very important skill in English for students

because writing has some benefits for them. Students can express their idea

through writing, for example in writing a recount text. They can tell their own

experience. In writing a text, students may find some difficulties and make some

mistakes. Teachers should help them to solve their problem so students can

improve their writing ability. The writer found problem owned by the eighth grade

students of MTs N Gembong in conducting writing. Peer reviewing can be used

by students to respond their friend’s writing and give comment whether they make

mistakes.

The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is any significant

difference between the ability of writing recount text of the eighth grade students

of MTs N Gembong in academic year 2012/ 2013 before and after being taught by

using Peer Reviewing.

In this research, the writer uses experimental research design without control

group. There are two variables in this research; they are Peer Reviewing as

independent variable and the Ability of Writing Recount Text of the Eighth Grade

Students of MTs N Gembong in Academic Year 2012/2013 as dependent variable.

The writer determines the eighth grade students of MTs N Gembong in academic

year 2012/2013 as the population and takes class VIII A as a sample. The writer

uses test to get the accurate data.

The result of this research shows that the ability of writing recount text of the

eighth grade students of MTs N Gembong in academic year 2012/2013 before

being taught by using peer reviewing is categorized as sufficient. The mean is 56

and standard deviation is 76,20. Meanwhile, the ability of writing recount text of

the eighth grade students of MTs N Gembong in academic year 2012/2013 after

being taught by using peer reviewing is categorized as good. The mean is 76 and

standard deviation is 47,96. The calculation of t-test gets the result 15,48, t-table

is 2,05. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the

ability of writing recount text of the eight students of MTs N Gembong academic

year 2012/2013 before and after being taught by using peer reviewing.

Considering the process and the result of this research, the writer gives

suggestions. For the English teachers, they can apply peer reviewing as alternative

technique in teaching writing to improve their students’ ability in writing,

especially in writing recount text. For the students, they should not be afraid when

they asked by the teacher to write a text. They can use peer reviewing with their

friends to improve their ability in writing text. Hopefully, there will be further

studies observing other advantages of writing recount text by using peer

reviewing.

Menulis sebagai kemampuan yang produktif merupakan kemampuan yang

sangat penting dalam Bahasa Inggris untuk para siswa karena menulis mempunyai

beberapa keuntungan bagi mereka. Para siswa dapat mengekspresikan ide mereka

melalui menulis, sebagai contohnya dalam menulis teks recount. Mereka dapat

menceritakan pengalaman pribadi mereka. Dalam menulis sebuah teks, para siswa

mungkin menemukan beberapa kesulitan dan membuat beberapa kesalahan. Para

guru sebaiknya menolong mereka untuk menyelesaikan masalah mereka sehingga

para siswa dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulisnya. Penulis menemukan

masalah yang dimiliki oleh siswa kelas delapan MTs N Gembong dalam menulis

teks. Peer reviewing dapat digunakan oleh para siswa untuk menanggapi karangan

teman meraka dan memberi ulasan apakah mereka membuat kesalahan.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan apakah ada perbedaan yang

signifikan antara kemampuan menulis teks recount siswa kelas delapan MTs N

Gembong tahun ajaran 2012/2013 sebelum dan sesudah diajar menggunakan Peer

Reviewing.

Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan desain penelitian eksperimen

tanpa kelompok kontrol. Ada dua variabel dalam penelitian ini; yaitu Peer

Reviewing sebagai independent variable dan kemampuan menulis teks recount

siswa kelas delapan MTs N Gembong tahun ajaran 2012/2013 sebagai dependent

variable. Penulis menentukan siswa kelas MTs N Gembong tahun ajaran

2012/2013 sebagai populasi dan mengambil kelas VIII A sebagai sampel. Penulis

menggunakan tes untuk mendapatkan data yang akurat.

Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan menulis teks recount

siswa kelas delapan MTs N Gembong tahun ajaran 2012/2013 sebelum diajar

dengan menggunakan peer reviewing dikategorikan cukup. Nilai rata- ratanya

adalah 56 dan standar deviasinya adalah 76,20. Sedangkan, kemampuan menulis

teks recount siswa kelas delapan MTs N Gembong tahun ajaran 2012/2013 setelah

diajar dengan menggunakan peer reviewing dikategorikan bagus. Nilai rata-

ratanya adalah 76 dan standar deviasinya adalah 47,96. Perhitungan t-tes

mendapat hasil 15,48, t-table adalah 2,05. Ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada

perbedaan yang signifikan antara kemampuan menulis teks recount siswa kelas

delapan MTs N Gembong tahun ajaran 2012/2013 sebelum dan sesudah diajar

menggunakan peer reviewing.

Dengan mempertimbangkan proses dan hasil dari penelitian ini, penulis

memberikan saran. Untuk para guru Bahasa Inggris, mereka dapat menerapkan

peer reviewing sebagai tekhnik alternative dalam mengajarkan menulis untuk

meningkatkan kemampuan menulis para siswa mereka, khususnya dalm menulis

teks recount. Untuk para siswa, mereka tidak perlu merasa takut ketika diminta

oleh guru untuk menulis sebuah teks. Mereka dapat menggunakan peer reviewing

dengan teman mereka untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam menulis

teks. Semoga aka nada penelitian lebih lanjut yang mengamati keuntungan-

keuntungan lain dalam menulis teks recount dengan menggunakan peer

reviewing.
