Old Settlers James Bartlett, one of the earliest settlers of Kankakee County died at the age of 72 years. He was highly respected and well known. This notice with no dates appeared in the Kankakee Gazette, Thursday, April 20, 1871. A short time later, his wife, who became ill at the time of her husband's death, died on April 29, 1871, a Saturday. James Melvin, who went to California for his health, died on April 30, 1870. His age was 47 years, three days. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 27, 1824. This man was one of the original founders of the first Congregational Church in Kankakee, in the year 1854. Peter Shreffler, born September 27, 1790, died May 26, 1871 in Limestone Township of Kankakee County. He fought in the War of 1812, moved to Ohio in 1835, and on to Illinois in 1846. He had twelve children, ten of whom survived him. With eighty one grandchildren, sixty six of whom survived him, he should have many relatives in Kankakee County. He died at the home of his son, E. Shreffler. This old settler became a Christian at the age of nineteen years. This appears in the news of June 8, 1871. Mrs. David H. (Emily Nichols) Denny died July 24, 1871. She had been in poor health for 18 years. Her parents were Peter and Elizabeth Nichols; she was born in Ross County, Ohio on April 2, 1817. Her family moved to Vigo County, Indiana when she was fourteen. She was married March 22, 1836. And she came to Kankakee County, Illinois April 1, 1857. She was the mother of two boys and four girls, all who survived her, and lived to maturity. Such obituaries helped inspire their peers to hold "Old Settler Days" reunions all over the frontier states. If you find an obituary of a member of your family in an old news paper, leave it there. Merely copy it, and have it printed. Several old news papers have square holes, left by the carving knife of an ignorant relative. We all need these articles for research. The Mormons All those interested in geneology should realize the assistance they can receive for the members of this denomination, who are required to research their family history and record it. Their libraries are very helpful. In Champaign, Illinois, they are located in the Latter Day Saints Church, and have access to all filmed records now collected by the Church. A free service! 27
