WELCOME TO ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA
Karibu Africa, Karibu Tanzania, Karibu Zanzibar, These are the words one would hear as they
enter the beautiful country of Tanzania specifically in Zanzibar. Zanzibar is the semi-
autonomous part of Tanzania. It consists of numerous small islands and two large ones: Unguja
(the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The capital is Zanzibar City,
located on the island of Unguja. Its historic centre is Stone Town, which is a World Heritage
Site.
Of many things Zanzibar is rich of, culture is in the top three. Composed of Africans, Arabs and
few European subpopulations, their mostly Muslims and follow the Muslim traditions like Eid
Al-Fitr. The people are driven by a sense of altruism and cooperation in everything they do. It is
one place where the word “we” is clearly defined.
Zanzibar's main industries are spices, raffia, and tourism. In particular, the islands produce
cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. For this reason, the islands are sometimes called
“the Spice Islands”
MESSAGE FROM TAMSA
TAMSA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear TAMSA, IFMSA and our friends!
It is once again a pleasant year in the TAMSA
calendar. This youth association has more work this
annum in shaping and building the capacities of
medical students together with serving the community
with full commitment and promise.
With 50years of our beautiful nation and the deadline
for the MDGs soon approaching, we would like to
dedicate this year in addressing health matters that
have not yet fully been tackled and increase our
awareness and the alertness of others on these
challenges.
It is not easy for us to take these steps unaccompanied,
we will need each and every hand and support to take
a leap and make an impact in the community; which is
the center of our attention for the year. We aim to
toughen and strengthen the bonds with our sister and
our patron associations in realizing a common goal.
We strongly believe that together we can improve the
health of all Tanzanians equally and efficiently.
Finally I would like to thank our partners, sponsors and donors in advance for their outstanding
shoulders that stand as a station for us to see far and fulfill the purpose of our training.
I wish you a fruitful 2014 and a wonderful Conference.
KARIBUNI SANA!

THEMES – CONFERENCE
WHY NEED OF REDUCING THE BURDEN ON NON-COMMUNICABLE
DISEASES?
More than nine million of all deaths attributed to NCDs occur before the age of 60; 90% of
these "premature" deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Cardiovascular
diseases account for most NCD deaths, or 17.3 million people annually, followed by cancers
(7.6 million), respiratory diseases (4.2 million), and diabetes (1.3 million1). These four groups
of diseases account for around 80% of all NCD deaths.
In reality, only 20% of chronic disease deaths occur in high income countries - while 80% occur
in low and middle income countries, where most of the world's population lives. The WHO
African Region has not been spared from a global epidemic of Non communicable
diseases. These diseases are associated with fatal complications such as blindness, renal failure,
gangrene leading to lower limb amputations and hemiplegic conditions. In these regions, chronic
diseases are projected to account for a quarter of all deaths by 2015.
Non communicable diseases, the silent killers, have insidious onset, debilitating complications
and result in painful deaths. The estimated number of chronic disease-related deaths in the WHO
African region in 2005 was 2,446,000. WHO projects that 28 million people in the Region will
die from a chronic disease over the next 10 years. Children, adults and the elderly are all
vulnerable to the risk factors that contribute to non-communicable diseases, whether from
unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, exposure to tobacco smoke or the effects of the harmful use
of alcohol.
These diseases are driven by forces that include ageing, rapid unplanned urbanization, and the
globalization of unhealthy lifestyles for example unhealthy diets may show up in individuals as
raised blood pressure- hypertension, overweight/obesity, hyperglycemia (high blood glucose
levels) and hyperlipidemia increased .
This year‟s conference aims at observing, documenting and declaring the role of medical
students and other health professions in the fight against the rapidly increasing NCDs.
Hence the conference will be addressing the following sub-topics:
GOVERNMENT POLICY TOWARDS NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
ROLE OF MEDICAL STUDENTS IN DIAGNOSING AND TREATMENT OF NON-
COMMUNICABLE DISEASE.
PRE-CONFERENCE The pre-conference shall take place from 29
th of Sepember to 1
st of October and shall comprise
of trainings in:-
Training New trainers (TNT)
Training Old Trainers (TOT)
Closing the gap/Open Access
Peer education training (PET)
Emergence medicine
Leadership and Management
Enterpreneurship
These capacity building trainings shall cover all three days and delegates will be required to
select only one of the above to participate for three days.
SOCIAL PROGRAMS
Zanzibar is literally like a magnet to tourists
because of its hub of attention-grabbing sights.
Starting with the Forodhani gardens „the focal
point of Stone Town‟-as they call it- you can
get hold of all sorts of foods including sea food,
salads, chips, beef, and even goat meat at night.
During the day, local handicrafts earn a living
by selling their art. Stone town food market is
another place where you can have anything on a
stick, from squid to chicken.
Among favorite destinations is the Africa House Hotel. If you want to see the horizon with the
most beautiful sunset, you should definitely spend a night at this hotel. Along with delicious food
and hospitality, it has a beach and spa for the rest of your life.
The number of bars is increasing on annually as more tourists keep pouring in.
Usually available are Tanzanian, Kenyan, South African and International beers and soft drinks
along with local and imported spirits. South African wines are also present. Africa House once
again hosts a bar and an even better restaurant within it. Pipes of shisha and an excellent range of
cocktails can be acquired from Mercury‟s bar along Mizingani road. Next to Africa House is bar
Shangani with a very strong local flavor and an appearance of hookers.
For the fun of music, you can visit Bwawani club at Bwawani Hotel, Starehe club and others for
a wild night of dancing, drinks and lights. The place gets even better later during the night rocks
to dawn. The entry fee is affordable and the music ranges from hip-hop, rnb, pop and even
