6th Grade Schedule Notes to Parents
We are amazed at how quickly this year is
passing us by! We are in the second semester
and that means for those students that started
the year off with History, have now
transitioned to Science and for those that
started with Science, they are now taking
History. For both of the classes students will
need a 1.5” Binder. As spring approaches
we are gearing up for the SOL’s and working
hard to prepare to rock the test! Our 8th grade
students already started the school off great
and the 6th grade contributed in showing our
support by making posters and providing
donuts! We are incredibly proud of all the
progress we see in our students!!

What are we learning?
Reading
Grade level SOL’s to cover: Can you believe that half of the year is over? This quarter we will be working on identifying the main idea and summarizing in both fiction and nonfiction passages. We will re-examine cause and effect in both genres as well as author’s purpose and organizational patterns. We will also revisit comparing and contrasting one topic in two passages. This can get a little difficult as we must remember to look at BOTH passages. We will be assessing our knowledge of Greek and Latin Roots on Friday.
Projects this quarter: There are no major projects planned at this point. However, we will be taking our second quarter benchmarks this week. There will be a reward of a movie and brownies for students who score high enough. We will also be taking a Student Growth Assessment later in February to give us a clearer idea of topics that need reviewed. There will also be a reward for these.

Skills to practice at home: Please encourage your child to focus and use the
strategies that they have learned over the years. I
have wonderful rewards for the end of the year for
students who PASS their Reading SOLs! They
CAN do it—with your help and encouragement!!!!
Math
Grade level SOL’s to cover: Over the next 9 weeks we will be exploring a multitude of new topics including: Exponents (SOL 6.5) Order of Operations (SOL 6.8), Properties (SOL 6.19), One Step Equations ( SOL 6.18), Integers (SOL 6.3), Inequalities (SOL 6.20) as well as solving single and multistep practical problems for decimals. (SOL 6.7) We will be very busy!!
Projects this quarter:
Throughout this quarter we will work on smaller in-class projects. During our Properties unit, the students will make a poster with Bulletin Board paper to represent the properties using multiple representations. The students will need to purchase a piece of poster board to complete a project for their Integers Unit. For this project the students will create a timeline on their life using positive and negative integers to represent events that happened before and after their birth.

Skills to practice at home:
It is important for students to master their multiplication and division facts. Practicing with flash cards will greatly improve their accuracy.
Science Grade level SOL’s to cover:
6.1: Scientific Investigation. The students will demonstrate the understanding of scientific reasoning, logic, and the nature of science by planning and conducting investigations in which...
(a) Observations are made involving fine discrimination between similar objects and organisms.
(b) Precise and approximate measures are recorded.
(c) Scale models are used to measure distance and
quantity. (d) Hypothesis is stated in ways that
identify the independent and dependent variable.
(e) A method is devised to test the validity of predictions and inferences.
Projects this quarter: Students will be a part of planned hands-on experiments such as creating a “Spaghetti-Marshmallow Tower” and “The Penny Drop Project.” We will also make relation to current events so that the students can see firsthand how the environment has changed. “The Friends of the Rappahannock,” will be implemented into this course. Students will have the opportunity to hear from a team of environmentalists and receive additional hands on experiments when these guests come into LMS.

Skills to practice at home: Students can think about the differences in observations and inferences in the world around them. Have them remember that for observations we use our five senses and with inferences we are making predictions based on observations.

Starting the new semester students will need a 1 ½” Binder
History
Grade level SOL’s to cover This quarter, we will be learning about Geography, American Indians, European Exploration, Colonial America, and the American Revolution. (SOL’s USI.1, USI.2, USI.3, USI.4, USI.5, and USI.6)
Projects this quarter: Students have been completing an "About Me" project in class, and we will be expanding this into the discovery of American Indians and what objects made them unique.
