We shall be celebrating the anniversary of the death of one of the greatest between the war years American writers. Not only was he well-known for his life of excess and heavy drinking, he was also a fisherman and big-game hunter. He loved bull-fights ; he loved travelling, in fact he was constantly on the move to witness the great events of his time, often narrowly escaping death. His literary works were largely inspired by his adventures in Florida and Spain, Kenya and Havana. Death in the afternoon depicts his passion for bull-fighting, Green Hills of Africa and The old man and the sea, (Nobel Prize in 1954) his passion for big-game hunting and game-fishing, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, his passion for Africa. For whom the Bell tolls gives us his vision of the Spanish civil war which he covered as war correspondent. Hemis pays tribute to a writer in love with freedom and great open spaces.
