SIXTH READING

Luke 2:1-7 Saint Luke tells of the birth of Jesus. Reader: Pedro Guarcas, Class of 2018

Reading proclaimed in Spanish.

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child.

While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Reader: Palabra del Señor.Response: Gloria a ti, Señor Jesús.

3. The shepherds heard the story proclaimed by angels bright, How Christ, the Lord of glory, was born on earth this night. To Bethlehem they sped and in the manger found him, As angel heralds said.

4. This Flow’r, whose fragrance tender With sweetness fills the air, Dispels with glorious splendor The darkness everywhere. True man, yet very God, From sin and death He saves us, And lightens every load.

The Office of the College Chaplains welcomes you to St. Joseph Memorial Chapel and the 39th Annual Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols.

This chapel, the spiritual center of the College since 1924, memorializes those from Holy Cross who died in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Honored veterans of Holy Cross include Lt. William F. Davitt, Class of 1907, a Catholic chaplain who was the last American officer to die in the First World War. In the vestibule is a plaque commemorating the visit of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin who was awarded an honorary degree from Holy Cross in 1983, and outside on the Chapel Plaza is a plaque memorializing the six Jesuit priests and two lay colleagues who were assassinated at the University of Central America in San Salvador, El Salvador in 1989. The lower level of the building, renovated in 2003, contains the Mary and McCooey Chapels, the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, the Reconciliation Chapel and the Gathering/Baptismal space.

The “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” originated on Christmas Eve, 1880, at the Anglican Cathedral of Truro. In 1918, Eric Milner-White adapted it for the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, and since then has always included nine readings with various carols, and has begun with the hymn ”Once in Royal David’s City.” We hear music tonight from some of the organists who served at King’s College including Boris Ord and Sir David Willcocks. Lessons and Carols has been a holiday tradition at Holy Cross since 1978 when it was introduced by former College Chaplain Robert Manning, S.J. and former College Choir director Bruce Miller.

Thank you for joining us this evening. We wish you God’s abundant blessings this Advent and Christmas!
