HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY

Hartley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897. The club's nickname of 'The Row' comes from Hartley Row, a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. In the late 1940s and into the 50s playing in the Basingstoke League, the club was successful despite having to play on a farm field with just a small wooden shed; this was Causeway Farm adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. Amongst the villagers who ran the club was its outstanding secretary, Fred Cook, who did every job that needed doing. Fred Cook's hand written minutes of meetings covering seasons 1948 to 1964 were discovered after his death and make fascinating reading, including the change of the club colours from blue squares to tange-rine in July 1956. The club moved to its present ground in Green Lane - The Me-morial Ground - in 1953. A pavilion was erected and the team continued to play in the Basingstoke League, and later in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which had replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club ap-pointed Ian Bedford as First Team Man-ager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Dur-ing the 80's these included several nota-ble ex-pros: Mick Travers (from 1980/81

to 1986/87; his other clubs included Reading, Portsmouth and Aldershot); Richard Walden (1985/86 & 1986/87; formerly with Aldershot, Sheffield Wed and Newport County); and Steve Fin-nieston (1985/86 to 1987/88; previously with Chelsea, Cardiff and Sheffield Utd). Within Ian's three years in management, the team gained trophies including the League Title (1982-1983) and Runners Up (1981-82), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners (1980-81), and George Allen Cup Winners (1981-82). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup (1982-83) and Aldershot Senior Cup (1981-82).

During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, then Secretary and Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted excep-tional hours in the embryo stages of this venture. In 2007-08 under manager

Mike Scott, the club gained promotion to the Combined Counties League Premier Division, but 2008-09 ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, fin-ishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in 2009-10. Coach Louis King then took the reigns as manager, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in 2010-11. A new management team of Neville Roach, assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for 2011-12 and it was a notable season with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run to the Third Qualifying Round. But the euphoria of promotion was damp-

ened even before the champagne bub-bles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left en masse to join Thatcham Town. Ex-Millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad for 2012-13. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-Basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, belief and the introduction of a talented group of play-ers quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club's 'Great Escape', the Row's place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie joined the existing coaching setup and the 2013-14 season started well. There were wins in the FA Cup to set up a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The club finished a cred-itable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new club crest was commissioned, designed by Philippa Bell, incorporating several elements tracing the village back to the 13th century when known as Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", hence the tree and stag motifs. 2014-15 saw the club consolidate its place in the CCL Premier, finishing a

comfortable 9th, after which Dillon stepped down and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers, with Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as Youth Team Manag-er. It was a very eventful 2015-16. After a memorable FA Cup win away at Mer-thyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep in injury time. In the FA Vase, The Row broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual final-ists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier for most of the season and claimed the 2015-16 league title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points. Promotion, howev-er, was denied due to ground grading. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the 2016-17 season under co-managers Dan Brown-lie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. Pro-pelled by the goals of strike duo Sam Argent and Ross Cook, The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Sen-ior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to take their place in the Southern League at Step 4 for the first time. To top off a wonderful 2016-17, Luke Tuffs' Youth team won the Hamp-shire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. The team took life at Step 4 in their stride and 2017-18 was to prove even more remarkable. The Row sat within

the top four for much of the season, nev-er dropping below 8th despite the loss of key players to other clubs. The man-agement team responded with some astute signings. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against higher division Gosport Borough and Farnborough be-fore going out in the First Round Proper to eventual finalists, Bromley FC. As the league campaign risked petering out, the signing of Nic Ciardini helped to keep the momentum going. Hugely im-portant was also the strong central de-fensive partnership of Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. Incredibly, a play-off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cam-bridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and The Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3. The final season highlight was in lifting the Alder-shot Senior Cup with a 4-1 win against Eversley & California FC. Having negotiated the steep climb from Step 5 to Step 3 in just two seasons, it's fair to say the club was collectively still pinching itself as the first game kicked off in the Evo-Stik League South Prem-ier South, 2018-19 getting off to the best possible start with a 3-1 win away at Poole Town. Dan Turkington was now co-manager with Anthony Millerick, with Sam Rafique, Keith Benjamin and Mark Hurst joining Head Coach Luke Tuffs on the coaching side. Come late September, Hartley even found themselves top for a week, but sustaining the early results proved diffi-cult. After a spell of poor results, the club found itself briefly in the relegation

zone, but more astute signings stiffened the defence and a superb late run saw Hartley finish 8th on 63 points, a hugely impressive achievement. To remain at the level also required another substan-tial round of ground grading improve-ments which stretched the club and its volunteers to the limits, but that too was achieved by the required deadline. The efforts on and off the pitch means Hart-ley Wintney can truly consider itself a Step 3 club as it prepares for its second season in the Southern League Premier Division. For season 2019/20, Manager Anthony Millerick takes sole charge of team se-lection with Dan Turkington no longer in a position to assist in the capacity of joint manager. After his huge contribu-tion over recent seasons, Head Coach Luke Tuffs departed at the end of 2018/19 to begin a managerial career. Neil Woodyer joins the coaching staff for 2019/20, the back room team com-pleted with the introduction of Sports Therapist Mark Povey. Hartley Wintney Reserves begin a new season in the Suburban League under new manager, Sean Hayes, who captained the A Team in clinching the Aldershot & District Football League Senior Division champi-onship last season. Hendon FC Kick Off: 7.30pm

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the Memorial Ground for this BetVictor Southern Premier South Division fixture against Hendon. To their players, officials & supporters we extend a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your stay with us today.

We also extend a warm welcome to today's match officials and hope that they too enjoy their short stay with us this evening.

Our visitors this evening are a club with a proud history, as you will doubtless read later in the programme. When the two sides met in December honours were even. The game finished 2 each. Hartley's goals that day were scored by Tom Bird and Josh Webb. Last term Hendon won here 3-2 at the Memorial Ground, Hartley’s goals being scored by Jack Ball and Mikey Campbell, and we won 2-nil at Silver Jubilee Park with goals from Mitch Parker and Steve Duff.

Nicknamed the Dons, they are currently 14th in the table with 38 points from 31 games. Under manager Lee Allinson they have become a formidable side.

On Saturday the team recorded a fan-tastic victory at second placed Chesham. A Ty Smith penalty and the winner from Sam Argent capped a fine display by the boys and earned a much needed 3 points.

The weather continues to thwart our attempts to get games on. I am aware that it is frustrating for the players for games to be called off. I can assure you that it is equally frustrating for the background staff. Spending time work-ing on the pitch, usually to no avail, planning programme production (thanks KOB), catering requirements etc. are all things that have to be con-sidered, and with the uncertainty that the inclement weather brings, a lot of this organising is done at very short notice.

Coupled with the lack of income result-ing from the postponements, these are very difficult times for the Club. Please bear with us and continue to support the team when you can.

Hope you all enjoy the game this even-ing. Please get behind the team and thank you for your support.

'It's a funny old game'. We are now in a new decade, and when you analyse where we’ve come from, it’s truly a remarkable rise. The Decade just gone… 2009-2010 CCL Division 1: 5th of 21 teams ------------------------------------------------------- 2015-16 CCL Premier: Champions 2016-17 CCL Premier: Champions 2017-18 EvoStik South East: Promoted 2018-19 Southern Premier South: Top 10 We’re indebted to our main sponsor Boss for their continued support, and to CSL and Honey Brothers. But the level we now play at is well beyond the realms of true amateur sport, and whilst we are fortunate to have a band of loyal players, we still need to be fi-nancially attractive to them if we want to stay competitive at this level. And it’s not just about the first team. We hear the concerns some have that the first team gets it all. But the donations importantly free up our resources to help us support all our other Saturday & midweek teams. The substantial work on the necessary FA ground grading inevitably stretched the purse strings to the limit. The improvements, however, benefits all our teams, making it more pleasurable to play and watch games here. At a time when the 11 a-side game at grassroots level is dying coun-trywide, we need your help to keep it alive locally. We are running an online fundraising app on our website. The app accepts Pay-Pal & Credit Cards. Alternatively, you have the option of pledging a cash amount which you can then give at the clubhouse. It’s set to run until 31st March and the target is £4000. As of today, we’re half way there… Please donate whatever you can, and Thank You! MILLERS

Welcome all for the visit of Hen-don FC. I hope you all enjoy your time with us and that conditions still make for an exciting game of football.

Although our visi-tors haven't won in 4 games, I still make them one of the stronger teams in the

league over the last 2/3 months, and will certainly be a different kind of chal-lenge for us today. We shared the points just before Xmas in a game of two halves, the first half seeing Hendon being far superior, with us miles off the pace. We made a battle of it second half, matching them up in the midfield areas, and two very good goals (was it though, Birdy?) saw us take the lead before being pegged back in the final minutes. Although it’s naturally disap-pointing to concede so late, despite our resurgence second half, I don't think many could begrudge Hendon a point and, coming away afterwards, it was a point we would have taken prior.

Since that time both teams have under-gone a facelift, and although we have-n't been able to get up a run of steam with the weather, our win on Saturday had been brewing for quite some time. Although nearly a month prior, our per-formance away at then 2nd place Tiverton showed that we can more than compete with the ‘big boys’ of this league, albeit we came away that day empty handed. The coaching staff knew, from a dominant 60 minutes that day, that there were good things in store for this group and it was a case of keeping the belief amongst the boys more than anything. The recent addi-

tions to the squad have only enhanced what was already a great team spirit and we are set up well for the massive amount of games to come.

Although the 11 on Saturday were su-perb and have duly had their plaudits, the rest of the squad will be needed and each will play a vital role as we aim to get ourselves as high up the league as possible. With games coming thick and fast, and the demands of the high energy game we play, we will see a bit of rotation happening in order to keep boys fresh. We have every faith in all the boys at the club, so when that hap-pens, it won't be to our detriment. The likes of Holla, Ty Newton, injured Josh Webb, Alex Albert and Sal have all played a big part in one way or another and will have their day in the sun as this is now truly a squad game.

The squad is in a good place right now and I sense the same feeling around the club despite the disappointment in the weather. But now comes the great-est challenge: maintaining momentum in a very tough league. Our recent form has been excellent, but now isn't the time to reflect on recent results, now is the time to work harder and refine the problem areas in our game and keep getting better and better.

The management/coaching staff will continue to do that, re-focus on the next game and do everything we can to keep the enjoyment factor around the club.

Enjoy the game here tonight, weather permitting!

Chesham United v Hartley Wintney, BetVictor Southern League Premier South, Saturday 7th March 2020 Report by David Graham

A well disciplined performance by Hart-ley Wintney saw them record a very notable win at Championship contend-ers Chesham United.

The Row started brightly and came close to opening the scoring on 4 minutes. A free kick from Ty Smith found the head of Sam Argent and his header drifted just over the crossbar.

Hartley continued to press and were rewarded on 9 minutes. A corner on the right from Ty Smith was headed back across the goal by Matt Drage. The ball fell to Joe Gater whose shot hit the hand of a Chesham defender from point

blank range. Ty Smith stepped up and scored from the spot kick. (0-1)

It took the Generals just three minutes to pull level. Good movement enabled Eoin Casey to get free on the right of the penalty area. Matt Drage challenged and clipped the striker and a penalty was awarded. David Pearce stepped up and scored with a low shot. (1-1)

Play settled down to a keen midfield battle, with neither side able to make too much impression on the opposition defence.

On 38 minutes a long pass from Tom Bird found Mitch Parker on the right. The striker created space for himself and was unlucky to see his shot go just wide. Two minutes later the Row put together a slick move. Marley Ridge found Nathan Smart coming in from the

right, and the full back's shot went across the goal and just wide.

HT: CHESHAM 1 HARTLEY 1

The second half resumed in much the same vein as the first half, although the home side had slightly more of the play. On 62 minutes, Kyle Watson made a surging run down the left wing. His cross set up Kyle Ollyide, who shot over from the edge of the penalty area.

The Generals continued to press and Pearce set up Ol-lyide some 20 yards out. The striker's well struck shot found Row keeper, Luke Wil-liams, well positioned to save.

On 75 minutes the Row went ahead. Good play through the middle saw Ty Smith hit a fierce shot which crashed against the post. Nathan Smart picked up the rebound on the right and his cross was fired home from 10 yards by an alert Sam Argent. (1-2)

Chesham pressed late on but Williams was not tested. However, on 89 minutes the Generals should have equalised. A slick move saw three for-wards get behind the Row defence. Ollyide set up Dernell Wynter, who shot wide from around 12 yards.

"I felt we were the better side and de-served to win. The team showed excel-lent character today against a good Chesham side, though I thought both penalties were debatable."

Millers continued, "I am immensely proud of the team. The hard work they put in at training shone through today. We now have a good group of players and look forward to all the upcoming games, which will be a season in itself."

Regarding Man of the Match: "Every member of the team would have been eligible. Tom Bird never put a foot wrong all afternoon."

Walton Casuals v Hartley Wintney, BetVictor Southern League Prem-ier South, Sat 22nd Feb 2020. Report by Tyler House

Hartley Wintney's recent good form continued with a 3-0 away win at Wal-ton Casuals, who remain in the bottom three.

It was Hartley's third win in four league matches after first half goals from Mar-ley Ridge and Sam Argent and a sec-ond half penalty scored by Ty Smith.

Hartley started well and recent signing Kingsley Eshun impressed early on. He had the chance to open the scoring in the third minute after good play from Aaron Kuhl and Mitchell Parker, but his shot was blocked. Soon after, a header from Joe Gater was on target but easily saved by goalkeeper Denzel Gerrar.

MATCH REPORT: WALTON CASUALS

In the 15th minute, Hartley scored the opening goal in a move started and finished by Ridge. The midfielder, mak-ing his first appearance since re-joining from Gosport, made a brilliant run and passed to Argent, and after he hit the post, Ridge reacted quickly to score into an empty net. (0-1)

The Row then increased their lead in the 22nd minute when Nathan Smart crossed to Argent, whose accurate header crept over the line after Gerrar had tipped the ball onto the post. (0-2)

Hartley could have had added a third when Gater headed over from Smith's corner, before Walton ended the half on top and came close to scoring in the 37th minute. But when Tyrone Lewthwaite was through on goal, his shot was parried away by Chris Harris.

HT: WALTON CASUALS 0 HARTLEY 2

In the second half, the hosts started well, but after Cole Brown beat Smart and raced into the penalty area, his cross was cleared.

Soon after, Lewthwaite was de-nied by Harris again, before an-other attack from the hosts saw them have a goal disallowed after Manolis Gogonas finished well but had failed to stay onside.

Harris later saved twice more, but after Walton failed to make the most of their chances, Hartley added a third goal from the pen-alty spot. In the 75th minute, Parker was twice denied from close range before the ball fell to Eshun, who was pushed to the ground and awarded a penalty that was scored confidently by Smith. (0-3)

The hosts later missed the chance to

score a consolation goal in stoppage time with a shot that went narrowly wide as Hartley secured a deserved victory. [Tyler House]

MATCH REPORT: TIVERTON TOWN

Tiverton Town v Hartley Wintney, BetVictor Southern League Prem-ier South, Saturday 8th Feb 2020 Report by Tyler House

Hartley Wintney were left to rue missed chances after they lost 2-0 away to promotion contenders Tiverton Town.

In a dominant first half for the hosts, Tiverton went close in the fourth mi-nute when Michael Landricombe saw his header saved by Hartley goalkeeper Luke Williams. The Yellows came close again soon after when Josh Key set up Alex Fletcher, but Williams was down quickly to save again.

In the 14th minute, Ty Smith blocked a shot from Fletcher, before Williams made a great fingertip save to deny Jordan Bastin from the corner.

A minute later, Tiverton scored the opening goal when an excellent pass from Bastin allowed Fletcher to turn and fire a low shot past Williams. (1-0)

Key went close with another chance in the 25th minute but he failed to beat Williams from a tight angle.

Mitchell Parker then had the chance to score at the other end for Hartley, but his effort was cleared by Kyle Egan.

As the Row pressed for an equaliser,

Tiverton added a second goal in the 28th minute. After a Hartley corner was headed clear, Key led a clinical counter attack that saw him race into the pen-alty area before squaring the ball to Bastin to tap in and score. (2-0)

Hartley responded and ended the half strongly, but Sam Argent shot wide before Joe Grant had his effort saved and the returning Matt Drage headed over from a corner.

HT: TIVERTON TOWN 2 HARTLEY 0

The Row's resurgence continued in the second half, but they could not find the goal their performance deserved.

On 51 minutes, Aaron Kuhl played in Argent, who was pulled back by Jordan Dyer, but the resulting free kick was off target from Parker.

Tiverton goalkeeper, Lewis Williams, then did superbly in the 64th minute, saving a shot from Parker, who was through on goal after Grant's pass.

Hartley introduced new signing Kings-ley Eshun for the final 20 minutes and he immediately set up Grant, whose shot clipped the outside of the post.

Joe Gater then headed another chance narrowly wide following a set piece, before Grant hit the side netting as the

Three minutes from the end, Parker blasted over from a tight angle, before Eshun missed two further chances for Hartley.

Tiverton nearly added to their lead late on as Williams pushed a shot from Bas-tin into Fletcher's path, but Nathan Smart denied him a second goal with a good block. [Tyler House]

Hartley Wintney v Alresford Town, Aldershot Senior Inv. Chall. Cup Quarter Final, Tues 4th Feb 2020 Report by Tyler House

Hartley Wintney left it late but pro-gressed to the semi finals of the Alder-shot Senior Cup with a 3-2 home win over Alresford Town.

The Wessex League side got off to the perfect start and took the lead inside two minutes. Hartley's Josh Webb was dispossessed by Sam Tonks and his pass found Dennett, who fired the ball into the bottom corner to score. (0-1)

Hartley looked for an immediate re-sponse as Mitchell Parker picked out Aaron Kuhl with a cross, but his header at the far post was held by goalkeeper Jordi Valero.

The Row had another chance soon af-ter when a lofted pass from Webb was cleared only as far as Ty Smith, but his scuffed shot went wide.

In the 22nd minute, another shot from Smith deflected wide before Shane Hol-lamby headed off target from the re-sulting corner.

Two minutes later, Parker did well to find Nathan Smart out wide and he crossed for Adam Cornell, who failed to convert as Hartley ended the half hav-ing missed numerous chances.

HT: HARTLEY 0 ALRESFORD TOWN 1

With Hartley still behind on the hour mark, they introduced Tom Bird and Sal Abubakar from the bench, a double substitution that was to help the Row to victory. When Bird won a free kick in the 69th minute, Smith crossed for Gater to head home the equaliser from close range. (1-1)

A minute later, Hartley completed a quick turnaround when Gater bundled in his second goal after the visitors failed to clear a Smith corner. (2-1)

In the 75th minute, another Hartley set piece was headed onto the post by Hol-lamby, who then went off injured and was replaced by Alex Albert.

The Magpies then drew level again in the 82nd minute. Following good work down the right, Gosney scored from 12 yards with a well-hit shot into the bot-tom corner. (2-2)

In a frantic finish to the game, Valero made two outstanding saves to deny Grant and Parker. However, in the sec-ond minute of stoppage time, Hartley grabbed the winner. Abubakar ex-changed passes with Smith and his cross was met by Grant, who headed past the goalkeeper to score. (3-2)

HENDON FC HISTORY

Hendon FC are now into their 10th sea-son under the ownership of its support-ers, following their takeover of the club in the summer of 2010. The Club has an illustrious and proud history since forming in 1908, beginning its exist-ence as Christchurch Hampstead. In their inaugural season, the club fin-ished as champions of the Finchley & District League Third Division. Ahead of the 1909-10 season, the club became Hampstead Town and immedi-ately won the Finchley & District League Second Division title, and the First Division title followed a year later. Further successes followed as the club entered sides in both the London and Mid-dlesex Leagues, and on the back of this, the club was elected into the Athenian League in 1914, one of the best competitions in ama-teur football just six years into the club's existence. In their eventual debut season after WWI, 1919-20, Hampstead Town fin-ished fourth, then runners-up in 1929, 1933, 1948, 1949 and 1952, before eventually winning the title in 1953. Further titles followed in 1956 and ‘61. The second renaming of the club came in 1926, when the suffix Town was dropped. 7 years later the club became Golders Green, and the final name change to Hendon came in 1946. There had been another Hendon club - it reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 1883 - and in 1932 Hendon and Hampstead met in two friendlies, the second to raise funds for the former club. Sadly, Hendon ceased to exist a couple of years later. In 1963, the club was accepted into the Isthmian League and this is where the

club has been ever since, always com-peting in the top division. They finished runners-up in their first season, fol-lowed by the first of two league titles a year later. Hendon were again champi-ons in 1973, having added to their run-ners-up achievements in 1966, 1974 and 2015. Indeed, in their first 11 sea-sons in the Isthmian League, Hendon never finished lower than sixth. Since then the club has had both good and bad seasons in the League, and in 2006 the club was reprieved from rele-

gation due to another club's financial misfortune. During the amateur era, the club reached the final of the FA Amateur Cup no less than five times, win-ning in 1960, 1965 and then in 1972 against En-field, but losing in 1955 and 1966. The club, throughout its history, has enjoyed FA

Cup success. As well as 21 appearanc-es in the first round (most recently at Aldershot Town in 2012), there have been six appearances in the second round (most recently in 1999-2000 at Blackpool) and one in the third round in January 1974 which saw the Greens draw 1-1 at Newcastle United before losing the replay 4-0 at Watford FC's Vicarage Road. The club has also enjoyed plenty of success in county cups, winning the Middlesex Senior Cup no less than 16 times out of 28 final appearances, as well as winning the Middlesex Charity Cup 14 times. The London Senior Cup has been won on five occasions, with a further 11 appearances in the final. Hampstead moved into its Claremont Road ground in 1926, the first game

HENDON FC HISTORY

being an FA Cup tie against Berkham-sted Town 18 September, which Hen-don won 4-3. The final match was played 82 years later, almost to the day, on 20 September 2008, when local rivals Wealdstone won 4-1 (Hendon's last goal at Claremont Road came from Dave Diedhiou, who would make 380 appearances and score 43 goals). After leaving Claremont Road, Hendon spent four years ground-sharing with Wembley FC, and in 2013 began a three-season ground-sharing arrange-ment with Harrow Borough FC at Earls-mead. In February 2014, plans moved apace to move back close to the Lon-don Borough of Barnet, at the old Kingsbury Town FC ground, Silver Jubi-lee Park (the borough boundary is around 20 metres behind the club-house). A FIFA-accredited 3G all-weather pitch was installed and certi-fied in October 2014. Following this, a successful planning application in July 2015 allowed the club - with Edgware Town FC - to redevelop the stadium. In 2014, Hendon relaunched their youth section, with 15 sides taking the field. This youth policy paid dividends after, as a number of players have moved up from the youth team to the senior side and one, Keagan Cole, aged 18, became the youngest ever Hendon player to complete 100 first-team ap-pearances (17 goals). In 2016-17, Hen-don added girls teams to boys youth. Hendon's move into Silver Jubilee Park in 2016 was more successful off the pitch than on it and it took until Janu-ary for a first home league win to be achieved. A last-day draw, completing a run of 22 points from 10 games, saw the club achieve safety from relegation. The 2017-18 season was nearly glori-ous. Led by the prolific 92-goal attack of Niko Muir (40 goals), Zak Joseph

(18), Ashley Nathaniel-George (17) and Josh Walker (17), Hendon roared to third place in the Bostik League - sec-ond top-three finish in four seasons - and reached the playoff final. Sadly, it was not to be as Dulwich Hamlet won a penalty shoot-out. A new era dawned in summer 2018 as The Football Association announced that Hendon would be playing in the Southern Premier Division South, the Greens' first League change since 1963. An even bigger change came as man-ager Gary McCann, his coaching staff and every senior player moved on to pastures new (though one, Luke Tingey, did return at the end of pre-season). Hendon made a great start to their new competition and were second in December, but a losing run led to a relegation battle was finally won on the last day of the season. After narrowly missing relegation in spring 2019, Hendon made a slow start to the new season. In November, the Greens parted ways with manager Jim-my Gray and appointed former Biggles-wade Town boss, Lee Allinson, to re-place him. Lee, whose father Ian played for Arsenal and now manages St Albans City, was a talented midfielder who started his playing career at Wat-ford and went on to play for Harlow Town, Barton Rovers, Enfield, Stotfold, Borehamwood, Arlesey Town and Big-gleswade Town before becoming assis-tant manager, then manager of Big-gleswade Town. An experienced coach, he - with his wife Faye - has run his own coaching academy in Stevenage since 2012. The club's nicknames are the Greens or the Dons. They were the Green even when they wore blue in the mid-1930s, because at the time the club was still known as Golders Green.

CLUB & PLAYER NEWS

Marley Back with The Row Hartley Wintney FC are delight-ed to announce that attacking midfielder Marley Ridge has re-signed for the North Hampshire club from Gosport Borough FC. Marley was with The Row through the second half of last season, having originally joined on a short term loan from Hav-ant & Waterlooville. He played an important part in helping the team achieve a top ten finish following their unsteady start to the 2018/19 campaign. Speaking about Marley's return, Hartley Wintney manager, An-thony Millerick, said, "Marley is seeking more game time at the level and we're delighted to have him back; we know his strengths as well as anyone. Marley will certainly provide a boost in midfield with his ener-gy and willingness to drive for-ward, and will create a healthy competition for places." The 22 year old midfielder came through the Havant & Waterlooville academy at South Downs College. After impressing at the academy, Marley signed a contract with the Hawks in 2015. He had loan spells with a number of clubs, after which he was handed his first league start for the Hawks early in season 2018/19 and gave a Man of the Match performance. In the summer Ridge was recalled by Havant & Waterlooville but joined Gos-port Borough earlier this season on loan. He then signed fulltime for the south coast club on his release from the Hawks. His return to Hartley Wintney comes on the heels of recent

returnees Sam Argent, Mitchell Parker and Matt Drage, giving the squad a familiar look and a tangible boost in the depth of the playing staff as the club battles to pull away from the drop zone in BetVictor Southern Premier South. Millerick added, "With the backload of games ever increasing, it is vital we have quality in depth in all depart-ments to ensure we improve on our current league standing and are able to capitalise on our games in hand." IS 3G/4G A PRACTICAL SOLUTION?

Is a 3G/4G Pitch a Realistic Vision for Hartley Wintney FC? How much longer must we suffer the terrible weather of the past weeks and the constant heart-break for all who gallantly strive to get our matches on? Luke has also previously pointed out the near catastrophic effect on the club finances. That aside we, the support-ers, and no doubt the players, miss our 'fix' of football and just want to get on with the outstanding matches. Mention has been made previously of a 3G Pitch, and certainly those clubs for-tunate enough to use such a facility have been able to carry on much as normal, certainly with their home fix-tures and training. Whereas we face, possibly, 3 games a week in order to complete our fixtures as required by the end of April. Go back to early season and few of us would have considered the possible option of HWFC installing a synthetic pitch, BUT NOW? Is the rain ONLY the 1 in 100 years? I chatted briefly with a small number of supporters and players after the game at Walton Casuals, where we enjoyed seeing our lads play and win well on a 3G Pitch. The game is a little different, but generally the players were enthusi-

astic about the surface, and even the thought of such a surface at Hartley. So is now not a highly appropriate time to urgently review where the club wish-es to be in the years ahead, and very seriously consider life with a 3G/4G facility? This would mean a New Vision for the club, probably including some changes to the way we operate, in or-der to obtain the necessary funding of pitch and ground improvements, plus the ongoing financing of periodic 'carpet' replacement. Big money is invariably only advanced for multi-use schemes which align with FA and Local Authority aims. This could fit in with our need to increase active membership, by widening our appeal. I believe some ground levelling would be required, thus raising the level of the notorious lower strip which has flooded and caused so many matches to be postponed. This could bring other benefits, which might include consider-ation of turning the pitch 90 degrees. Just think, fewer balls disappearing into the gardens at the far end! And how about a new grandstand at halfway, with changing-rooms under? Then con-vert part of the current changing rooms to a gym, and extend for indoor bowl-ing? For spectators, more of a bird's eye view from the clubhouse end, and almost an amphitheatre for a music

Page 35: THE ROW · 3 ened even before the champagne bub-bles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left en masse to join Thatcham Town. Ex-Millwall defender, Dave

35

event! I fantasise, and your club officers and committee would have to take any final decision, but we would all need to be be-hind such a scheme. It would indeed be a mas-sive project, probably advanced in stages and requiring considerable time and expertise. So everyone's views are im-portant, though I would emphasise that time is of the essence if we are to take advantage of FA/District Council schemes currently available to sup-port such projects. But think also of some other benefits of possessing such a pitch. Theoretically, almost unlimited sporting use, partly negating the need to use pitches in other locations, partic-ularly a benefit for the Junior club. Training would not rip up the turf; 6-a-side games would be possible, and how about setting up a local league? I am sure you can imagine other uses which would all then increase clubhouse us-age and income. The club has come such a long way since it moved from Causeway Farm to the Memorial Playing Fields. Us 'olduns started with only a grassy field, and as Vinty often reminds us, 'have to pinch ourselves at our progress', certainly over recent years. Even temporarily roping round the pitch was a novelty, then getting permission for simply a hedge was certainly not easy. Achiev-ing the new clubhouse proved near impossible financially, but we got there through the tremendous efforts of club members.

Since then Luke has led a sharply up-ward trajectory covering the football, the ground and club management. A side-effect of our success, however, has been to place a near intolerable burden on just a few key personnel, so we urgently need to find a way to re-lieve this pressure and secure the fu-ture financial well-being of HWFC. To my mind this should preserve our unique identity as a members' club, which is the envy of many, and not restructure in a way that excludes ordi-nary members from participation and influence. How many local clubs have gone down a limited company route, sold their souls, then gone bust in a few years? No easy solution, but if we have the will we can find a way. Long live Hart-ley Wintney Football Club, U.T.R.

David Willoughby - one of the old guard!

@Nonleaguepaper www.thenonleaguefootballpaper.com

This week’s NLP programme column was written by Edd Paul Back in late February, The Non-League Paper told the story of Scott Rickards' resignation as manager of Atherstone Town. Nothing unusual in that, you might think, but Scott's departure from the Adders – just days before the big-gest game of his fledgling management career – has huge and far-reaching implications. Rookie boss Scott decided to call time on his tenure at Sheepy Road following allegations of racist abuse from sup-porters during the recent Midlands League Division One clash with Stafford Town. It was the third week running that such accusations had been made against Atherstone fans so, a little under a fort-night before the club's crunch FA Vase quarter-final with Consett, Scott decid-ed he had seen and heard enough. It was time to make a stand. I have to say I felt sorry for Adders chair-man, Brian Henney. He commended Scott for his stance – he had to really - but denied that the club had a racism problem in its ranks. Sadly, though, Brian was just as aware as I was that football as a whole - from Premier League down to the Dog & Duck – does have a widespread prob-lem which is only getting worse. It pains me to say it, but I could count on one hand the number of times this season that there hasn't been a racist incident alleged at a Non-League ground somewhere across the UK on a Saturday afternoon. That is a very sad indictment and something must be done. It's a football prob-lem.

Unfortunately, though, there still doesn't appear to be an obvious solu-tion to solving the problem once and for all. Matches have been abandoned, players have walked off the pitch and clubs have imposed banning orders and even prosecutions in some cases. Yet, here we are, three months into 2020 for goodness sake, and we're still trying to find ways of tackling a problem which has permeated English football since the dark days of the 1970s. Nearly 50 years! Doesn't seem possible, does it? For now, we, the supporter, can play our part in eradicating the problem by reporting any suspected abuse to a nearest steward, club employee or even police officer. Scott Rickards made a stand , so let's follow suit and form a united front to stamp out racism from our football grounds.
