Paper Presentation
• Q&A– Kindy explain the whole intrusion detection system briefly.
• Provided a brief explanation using the system architecture slide
– How did you choose the features to extract?• We gathered features from existing literature, combined all of them, and
added some of our own
– Is it supervised learning or unsupervised learning?• We built the system with insider threats in mind, so it is supervised learning

Conference Paper 1• “Ensemble Algorithms for Unsupervised Anomaly Detection”
• Main Purpose– A particular algorithm may be well-suited to one data set but
ineffective to others– Classical bias-variance dilemma– Both can be alleviated by using ensemble methods
• Method– Ensemble algorithms– Second algorithm builds upon the findings of the first algorithm
• Experiments– Three datasets– Either LOF or COF followed by RADA achieve very good perfor-
mance in most cases– Anomaly detection using a subset of the given dataset, that is
suspected to contain all anomalies, is better

Conference Review
• Venue– The place is easy to get to since it is in Seoul
• Conference– The conference is well-organized, as compared to the first con-
ference I have attended– Professional-looking venue, with tools/devices well-provided for– The conference catered a range of topics that is too broad– This resulted in some very hard to understand presentations by
people not from the artificial intelligence field• Oral Session
– The chair during my session was very responsible with time and has a pleasant disposition that encourages questions
– Easy-to-understand presentations attract more questions from the audience than long, very complicated ones
– In some sessions, the people in the audience are few• Might be related to the MERS scare
• During lunch, there was a wide variety of food selections, from Korean, French, to western, and they were delicious 6

Conference Review
• Food and Banquet– During lunch, there was a wide variety
of food selections, from Korean, French, to western, and they were delicious
– Was not able to attend the banquet (because of my thesis and another conference shortly after)
• People– Met a girl from Syracuse University who is doing unsupervised
intrusion detection– Professor Jae Oh of Syracuse University asked if Professor Cho
will come
