Continuing Education Credits

It’s all here - Enhance your personal and professional growth! In order to earn CEUs, you must utilize your CEU card provided in your registration packet. At every seminar you attend, you will need to have the room proctor stamp your booklet at the end of the session. This stamp will serve as proof of attendance. We request that all CEU cards be turned into the MFA registration desk prior to your leaving the conference. CEU cards may also be scanned and emailed, faxed, or mailed to the MFA Office. CEU cards must be turned in by December 31st, 2017 in order to receive credit. Please allow up to 6 weeks for CEU Certificates to be processed. The Medical Fitness Association has applied for 12.08 contact hours. MFA Wednesday total CEC offerings = 210 minutes (3.5 hours) MFA Thursday total CEC offerings = 200 minutes (3.33 hours) MFA Friday total CEC offerings = 315 minutes (5.25 hours)

“Discover Population Health Concept and how Reimbursement Methods are altering the Industry” Faculty: Steve Long, President & CEO, Hancock Health

This presentation will discuss the origins of the population health concept and how changing reimbursement methods are altering the health care industry. This transformation will affect health care organizations of all kinds and will impact the role of primary health care organizations.

You’ll learn how to:

Understand how the health care lessons learned by our parents and grandparents in the 20th century apply directly to the health care crisis of today.

Appreciate the changing health care payment models and the extent to which this is driving the transformation.

Recognize the impact of these changes on the primary health care sector of the health care industry.

Steve Long, MHA, MBA, FACHE, President & CEO of Hancock Health (HH) in Greenfield, Indiana. HH is a healthcare system employing 1,000+ exceptional caregivers serving the health care needs of the residents of Hancock County, and surrounding areas, in cooperation with an outstanding active medical staff of nearly 400 physicians and other providers. Prior to his arrival at HH, Steve served as the President & CEO of Skiff Medical Center in Newton, Iowa. Steve earned his undergraduate degree in business and two Masters’ degrees (MBA and MHA) from the University of Iowa.

Peak medical fitness center performance demands rigorous attention to many details. Continually looking for ways to improve performance and avoiding the trap of status quo operations mentality, is critical to the ongoing success of a medical fitness center. Based on actual case studies, David will share key areas of analysis and performance improvement strategies for your center.

You’ll learn how to:

Assess key areas related to the condition and performance of their centers.

Understand key findings of performance analyses from several medical fitness center case studies.

Apply key performance improvement recommendations to their centers.

David Evans has over 35 years of experience in the development, implementation and management of preventive health, fitness and wellness facilities, programs and services. Four years as a certified athletic trainer, two years as a preventive health educator and researcher, seventeen years directly related to the development, start-up and ongoing management of hospital affiliated and corporate based fitness and sports medicine centers, and fifteen years as a consultant to the healthcare and medical fitness industries.

“Reimbursement Opportunities for Your Services – What Do You Need to Know?” Faculty: Clark Simpson, President & CEO, The Clark Group Associates All health care professionals desire to be compensated appropriately for the services they provide to their patients/clients. Not only is it a desire, but a necessity. There are numerous methodologies in which health care professionals can be compensated, or reimbursed, for their services. This seminar will present different reimbursement strategies that Qualified Health Care Professionals can consider, as well as exposure to the tools and resources needed to implement these strategies.

You’ll learn how to:

Identify at least three opportunities, or strategies, to be reimbursed for professional services provided.

Use tools and resources to seek successful reimbursement for services provided.

In July 2016, The Medical Fitness Association published outcomes protocols for 3 chronic diseases: Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus and Obesity. This session will provide details about the implementation of the protocols in fitness facilities. The protocols will be reviewed, but the focus will be lessons learned from the pilot programs and early adopters of the protocols including IRB approval if required, program marketing, data collection and follow up testing. Attendees to this session should feel comfortable with inaugurating the MFA Outcomes Protocols in their own facility.

the Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.

Physical activity is an important part of mental and physical health, and yet unhealthy physical activity plays a role in

many eating disorders. This presentation will inform viewers of the signs and symptoms of eating disorders and

excessive exercise. Viewers will gain an understanding of the etiology of eating disorders, specific diagnoses, and

treatment best-practices. The complex relationship between eating disorders and physical activity related to eating

disorder development, treatment, and recovery will be discussed.

“Novel Strategies for Reducing Cardiometabolic Disease Risk in Those with Paralysis”

Faculty: David Dolbow, Assistant Professor, School of Kinesiology

Dr. Dolbow will discuss developmental research concerning two emerging treatment strategies to decrease the risk of

cardiovascular and metabolic diseases for those with paralysis. 1) Resistance-Guided High Intensity Interval Training

Functional Electrical Stimulation Cycling produced enhanced body composition and improved cardiometabolic health

markers in a proof-of-principle case series, while 2) Intermittent Pneumatic Compression treatments were shown to

acutely increase blood flow and arterial dilation in paralyzed extremities during a pilot study. Dr. Dolbow will discuss

these and other future promising strategies for the health promotion of those with paralytic conditions.

You’ll learn how to:

Identify and understand the detrimental effects of paralysis on body composition, hemodynamics and various

cardiovascular and metabolic health markers.

Understand the possible benefits of resistance-guided high intensity interval training functional electrical stimulation

cycling for those with paralytic conditions.

Gain an understanding of future strategies concerning the rehabilitation and enhancement of health for those with

paralytic conditions.

David Dolbow is an Assistant Professor and Researcher at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS.

After receiving his Master’s in Human Movement from Boston University, he went on to earn his PhD in Human

Performance with a Specialization in Exercise Science from Middle Tennessee State University. He holds professional

“Underwater Treadmill Training: A Promising New Therapy for Patients with Neural-Paralytic Conditions”

The audience will specific benefits will be elaborated on for patients with neural-paralytic conditions such as spinal cord

injury and stroke. Speakers will also elaborate on patient, supervisor safety and what an exercise protocol for this

population should entail. A full description and analysis will be made on the past and current research in underwater

treadmill training. Research in underwater treadmill training will elaborate on the past findings and future implications of

the following published manuscripts of the presenters, in addition to research performed internationally. Identify several benefits of underwater treadmill training shown in recent research involving patients with spinal cord

injury and stroke.

James Dolbow is a graduate student in Biomedical Professions at Lincoln Memorial University and a past and present

researcher in neurological injury/disease rehabilitation. He will be attending Debusk College of Osteopathic Medicine as

an OMS-1, class of 2020.

Sandra Stevens began her education at the University of Kansas before earning her Master’s at Middle Tennessee

State University in 2005 and then her PhD in 2010. She currently serves as the Assistant Professor at the Middle

Tennessee State University.

“Metabolic Barriers to Weight Loss Maintenance”

Faculty: Inda Mowett, MD, Medical Director, The Aesthetic and Wellness Center

Every year, thousands of people in the US and around the world, attempt to lose weight with some type of diet and/or

exercises. Studies have shown that those who are successful; one to two-thirds will regain their weight within one year,

and often gain more weight. In 2016, the National Institute of Health (NIH) released the results of a longitudinal study

done to 16 participants of season 8 of the Biggest Loser televised show. The results suggest changes on participants’

metabolism and the brain to adapt to their new body weight, by a process called metabolic re-adaptation. Dr Mowett will

explain some of these metabolic re-adaption processes that take place and share strategies that she uses with her own

patients to achieve long term weight loss.

You will learn how to:

Identify the factors affecting the maintenance after weight loss.

Understand the significance of metabolic adaptation.

Recognize the hormonal mechanism that occurs with weight loss.

Dr. Inda Mowett graduated from the University of Panama in 1987. After completing her residency program in Family

Medicine in her native country, she continued her medical training in Jamaica Hospital in Queens, New York and St.

Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey. Dr. Mowett’s has a devoted an interest in preventive medicine, health and

wellness, and became certified in obesity medicine in 2010.

The “Obesity Epidemic” within the United States has brought important issues to light regarding the health implications

of high body weight. Unfortunately, however, a resultant focus on body size rather than health has given more fuel to the

fire of unrealistic body size expectations and weight stigma. This lecture will discuss implications of weight bias from

health care and exercise professionals as well as provide suggestions for providing more supportive weight

management programs.

Identify three impacts of weight stigma on individuals with overweight or obesity.

Identify their behaviors on perpetuate bias.

Gain an understanding of methods for improving the self-efficacy of weight management clients.

Cynthia Howell received her Masters of Public Health with a focus in community health education and promotion. She

“Aquatic Programming”

Faculty: Sue Parker, FMFA, Aquatics Manager, Cleveland Clinic Akron General LifeStyles

Beginning with an overview of the aquatic department mission, Sue will share some favorite aquatic programs that

Akron General and now, Cleveland Clinic/Akron General have provided over the past 20 years that support that mission.

You’ll learn how to:

Understand how these programs have helped members to meet their fitness, wellness, therapeutic, recreational and

water safety goals.

Understand how these programs have affected the bottom line, with revenue generation, attracting new members and

positioning the Wellness Center as an aquatic training hub.

Identify favorite programs and the impact they have made for their facilities.

Sue Parker has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and over 40 years of experience in teaching

and programming. She proudly served as the Manager of Center Activities and Programs at Akron General LifeStyles

for eleven years before concentrating on aquatics only. Sue is a dedicated Medical Fitness Association Board of

Director Member and Fellow.

“Active Shooter”

Faculty: Jamy McGee, FMFA, Health Education Director, UNC Wellness Centers

Instances of active shooter have continued to occur in all of our communities, small and large, causing catastrophic

consequences. Although the chances of being involved in an active shooter situation are about the same as being

struck by lightning, if it does occur, the results can be deadly. Awareness, preparation, and staff training are keys for

surviving this type of incident. This discussion will review policy and procedures to consider, facility and building

assessment tasks, the importance of communication and collaboration with your medical center police and local law

enforcement, and the support and assistance needed from your hospital administration to develop strategies for

surviving an active shooter incident in a medical fitness facility.

You’ll learn how to:

Outline procedures taken in an active shooter incident, including handling emergency response communication,

managing members and guests, supporting and communication with law enforcement personnel.

Review facility and active shooter prevention tasks, including building modifications, camera installation, and safe sites.

Review staff safety procedures and actions during an active shooter incident.

Jamy McGee has served UNC Health Care for the past 17 years. She volunteers her time and knowledge by actively

serving on Medical Fitness Association Committees for the past ten years and has been a SEMFA Board Member since

2006. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa before receiving her Master

of Arts in Physical Education from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Conference Location

All seminars, registration booths and trade show exhibits will be held in Hall C of the West Concourse in the Orange

County Convention Center, located at 9800 International Drive, Orlando, Florida, 32819.

Dress Code

Conference dress is casual. We recommend comfortable walking shoes and layers of clothing. Attendees are

encouraged to bring a sweater or light jacket due to the air conditioning system within the center.

Taxi fares can range between $40-$55 from the international airport to the Orange County Convention Center area and

The West Building's parking lot can be accessed a number of ways — via Exhibit Drive (north entrance), via Convention

Way (south entrance) and via West Entrance Drive off of Westwood Boulevard. For detailed driving directions, please
