14:00-14:05

Opening Remarks from the Legal Exchange Network

14:05-14:15

Chair's Opening Remarks: Matt Dixon, Partner, HGF Limited

14:15-14:45

Opening Keynote Address: Aligning IP with Business Strategy: Do We Need a CIPO to Take a Seat on the Board or Just a Better Ways to Engage the C-Level?

Aligning with the business strategy with the IP strategy and raising the profile of IP into the C suite is a must for IP Directors. However in many businesses cost and other impediments often affect the ability of IP Directors’ ability to effect this alignment. It’s only in certain industries where the role of Chief IP Counsel is starting to stick. Why are some companies more successful than others in securing this alignment of IP and business strategies? Does this matter? Is it about the seniority of the role of the IP Director or is it about how IP is perceived in your company?

Communication and the IP director: how can IP directors talk the language of the boardroom? How can IP directors prove the commercial opportunities and get the board interested from the

early stages of IP? Does having a Chief IP Officer, or representation on the board, actually make a difference in

practice? C level leaders like certainties, but with IP it is hard to give a yes or no answer. How can IP

directors overcome this challenge?

Brian Hinman, Chief IP Counsel, Philips

14:45-15:15

NETWORKING TIME!

Interactive Networking Session – Industry Bingo Competition It’s time to meet your peers in this brand new interactive networking session!

At the Global IP Exchange, the networking aspects are key to a great attendee experience. By meeting a wide range of new contacts, you will be able to learn new strategies and ways to overcome challenges,

not just from the speakers but from your peers. So it’s time to flex your networking muscles!

How does it work? Your goal in this session is to meet as many people as possible. So, how do you win the prize?

You will each receive a card that lists all industries that are represented at the event. Your goal through the session, and your way to win the prize, is to collect the most industries as possible. Every time you

meet someone from a new industry, you can circle that industry off on your card (and remember to make a note of their name!)

On day two of the Exchange, the Exchange team will find the card with the most industries circled, and they will win the prize!

TRACK A - PATENT

TRACK B - TRADEMARK & BRAND PROTECTION

Workshop: Strategic Patenting Classical patenting is driven by what one might consider an “internal” view of the firm, in which

patents are primarily obtained for protecting self-made inventions based on one’s own research

activities. In contrast, strategic patenting is driven by an “external” view of the firm. This external

view is not primarily focused on the protection of internal inventions simply for the sake of staking

one’s claim vis-à-vis a de facto non-existent conflict party. Instead, it is directed at a particular external “target”, i.e. a firm or group of firms such as competitors, suppliers or demanders. The basic

concept behind strategic patenting is a coordinated improvement of a firm’s comparative IP right situation vis-à-vis this target. The desired result of strategic patenting is a purposive “hit on

target” as compared to the scattered, uncoordinated approach of classical patenting that

hits targets rather randomly. Since all patenting activities of the firm are intentionally targeted

against specific firms, strategic patenting is more efficient than classical patenting.

Hear from some of the 2015 Global IP Exchange Attendees:

“This is a must attend event for major IP professionals and decision makers and those who provide them the quality support they need. This is the kind of event you’ll want to come back to year after year”

Matthew Luby , VP Analytics & Advisory Services, CPA Global: Networking opportunities

“The casual meeting opportunities are very good, it’s the best part of the meeting because most of the interesting topics come up in a more casual discussion”

Michael Kock, Head of IP, Syngenta: Networking opportunities

“The crucial benefit of the Exchange is getting the caliber of IP delegates or execs in one room, very compact, very attainable as well as there weren’t so many people, the one-to-one meetings were crucial, and the fact that we’ve had people on hand to help us with anything we need has allowed the past 3 days to flow very very easily for us. I

would definitely recommend the Global IP Exchange” “The one-to-one meetings are critical. I’ve been to conferences before where it’s been a huge mass of people

walking towards talks and sections, for me that’s all good and well to get yourself out there, but to get that one on one time with a prospect is invaluable” Joan Mill, Head of Sales, Novum (fusion)

“The networking and the interaction is very much stimulated by this set up” Jan de Visser, Brand Protection - Senior Director, Philips Group Innovation

“I really enjoy the one-to-one meetings as it’s a time to get into a detailed discussion that you wouldn’t normally get, it’s also easier to have a more commercial discussion and talk about the clients real interests and mine”

“It attracts high levels within the industry, which is unusual to have such a high concentration of people who are high up within the IP departments of these larger companies”

Paul Higgin, Director, Swindell & Pearson

“The different types of sessions promotes interactivity between the delegate and the speakers, rather than just having structured sessions, they have BrainWeaves, classes, breakouts and networking work it’s one of the better

conferences out there” “Its’ been very worthwhile, the quality of the sessions, information exchange and networking has been

very good indeed” Andrew J Catton, Partner, Miller Insurance Services

“This event was very helpful in terms of networking, a lot of the Heads of IP departments especially in Europe came to this event and I was able to meet with them, and there was certain people I wanted to connect with before who

were at the event which I didn’t know and perhaps it will result in a mutually beneficial collaboration” Tao Zhang, Director of IP Strategy, Huawei
