E he Ward Foundation’s 1988 World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competi tion was a record breaker. More carvers entered the competition than ever before, demonstrating the growing popularity of bird carving in America, and worldwide. A total of 918 carvers entered 2127 pieces in the prestigious juried exhibition, which attracted artists from as far away as Norway and Japan. The competition is held during Ocean City’s offseason for tourism, but the city’s Convention Center was ‘acked all weekend, even though an .~ntire floor was added this year to accommodate more retail display areas. The competition began on Thurs day with a series of carving and painting seminars, and the carvings ~vent on exhibit Friday morning.
