Natural Disasters• In 1971 a strong earthquake in San

Fernando, California registered a 6.7 and killed 65 people.

• In 1972 a flooding in Buffalo Creek, West Virginia killed 118.

• On June 19th-29th 1972 Hurricane Agnes traveled from Florida to New York that killed a total of 118 people.

• On April 3rd-4th 1974 there were the second largest amount of tornadoes in one day at 148.

won the world series.• Bear Bryant won The

University of Alabama a National Championship in 1973.

• From 1972-1978 the Pittsburg Steelers won four Super Bowls.

• Joe Frazier knocked out Jimmy Ellis in the fifth round for the World Heavyweight Championship.

• Shortly after, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier scuffled during a news cast while they watched a clip from their first fight.

married couples with children dropped to 30.9%.

• The number of men living alone rose from 4.3% to 8.6%, and women 8.7% to 14% in 1972.

• In the 1970’s the percent of population who never married increased to 22.5% from 17.3%.

• The bell phone was introduced in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

• By 1971 the number of “Bell telephones in service reached over one hundred million in the world.”

-Hot pants were skin tight and came in satin, velvet, denim, leather, vinyl, and mink

-Pants also began to be gently flared and reached wide bell bottom proportions.

-Flower-prints were also a big hit.-Denim jeans became almost part of a

uniform for men and women.-Leisure suits were casual suits consisting

of a shirt-like jacket and matching trousers.

-Platform shoes were also popular because they made legs look longer and short people taller.

-Many of the fashion styles were influenced by the hippie movement.

for most of the decade with many layers.

• Sideburns and beards were also popular.

-Women• Many women or teenage

girls wore their hair long with a center or side parting.
