Heathrow’s Very Own Kaz

The guest speaker at the Tuesday, February 11, 2014 luncheon will have a very familiar face. He is Kaz Alasvandian, the banquet captain at

the Heathrow Country Club. Yes, the Kaz! Anyone who has attended any affair at the country club in the past 17 years knows and loves this

quiet and unassuming man. Kaz always greets people with a huge smile, a hug, and often a kiss. He really knows how to make each person

he meets feel as though he or she is the most important one in the room. Because we have had the privilege of seeing him over the years, we

all think that we know him, but do we really?

Kaz was born in Masjed Soleyman, Iran, a city which is located in the geographic center of the Middle Eastern oil industry. After graduating

from high school in Iran, he served the required two years in the Iranian army. Kaz then began working for an oil company that had ties with

the Persian Gulf. At that time his country was ruled by the Shah of Iran, and America and Iran were friendly allies. The company in which Kaz

worked was staffed by Iranian and American workers. Some of his American friends encouraged him to save his money and come to the Unit-

ed States to earn a college degree that would open opportunities for him when he returned to Iran. Since he already had a brother living in

Florida, Kaz came to Tallahassee in 1977 and enrolled at Florida A&M University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engi-

neering.

In the spring of 1979 the Iranian government was toppled and the Ayatollah Khomeini became the new Supreme Leader. On November 4,

1979 Iranian militants overtook the American Embassy in the capital city of Tehran and captured 52 Americans. This was the day that

changed everything for Kaz. He had lived with Americans in peace and friendship for over two years at that time. But after the capture of the

hostages, overnight all his friends turned their backs on him and he became the enemy because he was Iranian. Kaz became guilty by asso-

ciation. What the American people didn’t know was that members of Kaz’s extended family back in Iran had already been captured and exe-

cuted by that militant government. Since that iconic November day 34 years ago, Kaz has spent his time actively opposing the Iranian govern-

ment.

Kaz will share with us the story of his life in exile and describe the many venues he has pursued in his journey against the Iranian regime.

Please mark your calendar so you will not miss this fascinating speaker, Kaz.

President’s Message

If you attended our January dinner meeting, I'm sure you will agree that the

rousing piano playing and singing by Tod Kimbro was a huge hit! It was a fun, interactive time for all. Thank you to the Heathrow Country Club for creating a very elegant banquet setting for this once yearly affair. Hats off to the chef for a delicious dinner!

February brings the long anticipated "3rd Annual Purse Auction" as well as a presenta-tion by Heathrow's own Kaz Alasvandian. Registration will begin earlier at 10:30 am on Tuesday, February 11th. Come early, so you won't miss a thing!

"Socializing with a Purpose"

Planning for our annual Charity Benefit, "Starry Starry Night" is well underway! The Ways & Means Committee has been very busy planning an outstanding event for your enjoyment. Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 29, 2014. The fun evening begins at 6 pm at the Lake Mary Marriott with an exciting Silent Auction, cash bar, passed hors d'oeuvres and complimentary champagne! Attendees will be treated to a fabulous dinner, dancing to DJ Eric Taylor and live music by Rayvn. Our own Bud Hedinger will serve as our Emcee for the evening. Tickets are available by contacting Diana Fyfe or Joyce Rich-ardson and of course available at our monthly luncheons. Please don't wait too long...it's sure to be a sell out! You'll have a great evening while knowing you are helping those less fortunate!

As I wrote in the January issue,, each month I would like to highlight one of our Standing

Committees that you may not be familiar with the commitment and work these committee volunteers give to the Heathrow Women's Club.

This month I'll continue with the Focus Committee. Jo Ann Bloom, Chairwoman, and her committee assure that the bylaws, policy and procedures, and job descriptions for all committees are consistent with club operations. Each year this committee reviews and make recommendations to the Board to update the bylaws, policies and procedures as well as the job descriptions. They also review and make recommendations regarding specific questions and issues brought to the committee from the Board of Directors. They assure that quorum requirement, notices and voter approval are observed when amend-ing bylaws.

The Focus Committee has been busy this year. Specifically ~

They recently developed procedures for replacing board members who resign before the end of their term. This was especially important, as the HWC bylaws did not cover this specific issue.

They created a pamphlet containing an abbreviated "Policies and Procedures" article to be given to each new member at the New Member Orientations. You may find the entire version in the Green Directory Book beginning on page 24.

Each year the committee constructs a questionnaire/survey for distribution to our membership at the April General Meeting. Where upon they will compile the re-sults and inform the other committee chairs as well as the general membership of their findings.

As you can see, this committee is essential to our organization and under the leadership of Jo Ann, they have been very successful in guiding the board in the proper use of our bylaws, policies and procedures.

If you would like to know about this committee or any of our committees, please contact me.

Kindest regards,

Martha

New Member Orientation

February 4th at 6:30 PM is the date and time of the New Member Orientation - Social. Linda and Bill Richardson have generously opened their home in Timacuan to New Members, Board Presenter Members and the Hospitality Committee.

Appetizers and beverages will be provided by Board Members and Hospitality Committee Members. This is an opportunity to socialize but more importantly, learn about the purposes and goals of each Board Position. New members are encouraged to ask questions about the fundamentals and direction of HWC at this get-together. Again, we are pleasantly socializing with a purpose.

6 Member Spotlight

Roz Sellers By Lee Granger

Evidently, the positive energy force that blew into Luigino’s, has been

part of Roslyn’s aura for quite some time! Although Roz has been a

member of the Heathrow Women’s Club for a short while, she has made

a big difference as she is now the Chairperson of the Hospitality Com-

mittee, welcoming new members, making them feel comfortable, and

inspiring them to participate.

Making a big difference is something Roz has done all of her life, especially with her students. Roz grew up in Upstate

New York with her brother, Reed. The daughter of a USPS rural route deliveryman and a bank secretary, there was

little in this town of 5,000 that was secret! Roz found her calling in college at the SUC at Buffalo where she majored in

Home Economics. After receiving her degrees, she went to work in Tonawanda, NY, first high school and then the junior

high, teaching Home and Career Skills. For 16 years, every single eighth grader in the district was taught by Mrs.

Sellers. Roz' passion for teaching, love for her students, and friendly accessibility won her much appreciation from par-

ents and students alike. She was awarded 1997 Teacher of the Year in the school district and has been called “one of a

kind.” And who says work and relationships can’t work? It was there that she met “the love of my life” Burt, who was the

Biology teacher and later a school principal.

Roz is an avid naturist and avowed “tree hugger.” She and Burt are members of several nature conservation organiza-

tions, including the Audubon Society. She loves being out in nature and takes advantage of Florida’s extensive sun-

shine, riding her bicycle along trails in Seminole County, covering about 30 miles a week!! Part of her love of nature in-

cludes a passion for large dogs. She and Burt have trained two therapy dogs and are in the process of training four

month old black lab pup, Hope, into the family tradition.

Roz and Burt have two children and four grandchildren. Daughter Ellyn is a family physician, practicing in Ithaca, NY and

son BJ lives in Timacuan and owns Certified Mortgage Planners in Lake Mary. BJ is a marathon runner, so Roz sees a

lot of him as he runs and she bicycles alongside! The family is close and visit regularly, often at their summer cottage on

Lake Erie where they enjoy sailing and other water sports.

Roz’ energy and enthusiasm are infectious and we are indeed blessed to have her as a member of the Heathrow Wom-

en’s Club! One of Roz’ favorite quotes by author John Ruskin, is great inspiration for all of us: “What we think, or what

we know, or what we believe, is in the end of little consequence. The only thing of consequence is what we do.”

Charitable Endeavors

10

With your help, the Charitable Endeavors Committee is giving Birthday parties for the children at Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida, West Sanford Branch. These parties will take place the last Wednesday of each month at 4:00pm and include all the children that have had a birthday that month. Our first party was given on Janu-ary 29th. There were seventeen celebrants who deco-rated their own cupcakes and played games. Each child left feeling special. If you would like to participate in this fun volunteer activity, please let us know. We would like to keep them going through the summer so no child’s birthday is missed. Our third cooking class at Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida, West Sanford Branch was held on January 9th. We had two groups of ten children. Together, we creat-ed a healthy snack and talked about good food choices. It was lots of fun! Our Day of Beauty continues to be a big success at Safe House. Many of our members are involved with Bags of Hope Central Florida and it is running smoothly. At this time of year, the Charitable Endeavors Committee evaluates both new and existing charities to see if any changes will be made in our support for next year. We welcome volunteers….No waiting lists! Come join us!
