V irginia’s Community Colleges are at their best when they reflect and engage the communities they serve. The individuals we honor this year make up our 12th class of recipients of the

Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. Their support allows our colleges to do more, to serve more and to be more for the families and businesses that are counting on us the most.

Your generosity creates a chance to go to college for those who lack it; a skilled workforce for companies that need it; and a path to the American Dream for those who seek it.

Thank you for choosing to support Virginia’s Community Colleges, and know that we never take that support for granted. We never forget the countless worthy causes, agencies and efforts that seek philanthropic support. Yet, you choose to support our mission, our students, and our people, and that humbles us. We honor your choice, in return, with a relentless commitment to realize that mission to give everyone the opportunity to learn and develop the right skills so lives and communities are strengthened throughout our beloved Virginia.

The 12th Annual Chancellor’s Award for

Leadeº∑hip in Philanthº∏py

“No computer, no scientific study, will ever be able to measure in full the benefits accruing to Virginia and to coming generations from our community college system.”

— The honor able Mills e. Godwin, Governor of The CoMMonwealTh of virGinia, June 3, 1969

The Zane D. Showker FamilyThe late Zane D. Showker was a philanthropic giant in our community – investing in numerous educational institutions, including Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC), as well as a significant number of local not-for-profit organizations. At BRCC, he established the Zane D. Showker Endowed Scholarship to support students based on their financial need and academic performance. Mr. Showker’s children have continued the legacy of support for Blue Ridge, in part by growing the scholarship endowment in the years since Zane’s passing. In addition, the family’s generosity has extended to BRCC Enactus, our Nursing program, the Great Expectations program for foster care youth, Foundation events, and the Blue Ridge Annual Fund.

BWX Technologies, Inc.This year, we say thank you as we recognize BWX Technologies (BWXT) as one of our most steadfast and generous supporters. We want to mark the occasion not only with our gratitude but also with a promise. A promise that Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) will continue to use the resources entrusted to us to help our students develop the skills they need to be competitive in today’s workplace. BWXT has consistently provided us the assistance to do this: with funding for scholarships and capital investments and with their employees’ direct involvement in instruction and in positions on our boards and committees. So today we pause for a moment and remember their notable philanthropy and partnership, which have changed the lives of thousands of local students.

Bill and Lang WilsonBill and Lang Wilson have been passionate and dedicated supporters of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College (DSLCC) and our regional community for decades, the highlight of which was their incredibly generous gift during our recent major gifts campaign. The gift not only provided much needed financial support and encouragement to our most deserving Dabney students, but also paved the way for private gifts made by others during the campaign. The Wilsons lead by example and care deeply about our DSLCC family, as evidenced by Bill’s nearly 20 year membership on the DSLCC Educational Foundation Board, including his presidency in the early 2000s. We are truly fortunate to count Bill and Lang Wilson among DSLCC’s dearest friends.

Danville Regional FoundationThe Danville Regional Foundation invests in innovative long-term projects aimed at creating the community we want to be. Realizing that education is the first step on the road to transformation, the Danville Regional Foundation awarded one of its first grants to Danville Community College (DCC) for the construction of a state-of-the-art health sciences building to train the region’s future nurses, dental hygienists, phlebotomists, and pharmacy and medical laboratory technicians. This investment in 2009 has been instrumental in transforming the health, education, and well-being of the region’s residents. Since its initial gift, the Danville Regional Foundation has continued to partner with DCC to provide educational opportunities in advanced manufacturing – precision machining/welding for our students, which has led to a positive impact on the economic vitality of the region.

PATH FoundationLast year’s gift of $1 million from the PATH Foundation was the epitome of leadership in philanthropy. The gift came at a pivotal moment in our efforts to secure state construction funds for a new science and health building at our Fauquier Campus. The PATH Foundation’s goal is to improve health and wellness on a broad scale in Fauquier and Rappahannock counties. By investing in Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) through such a transformational gift, the PATH Foundation also highlighted the importance of a skilled workforce and access to education — particularly in the health professions. We are so grateful for their leadership in philanthropy and in our community.

Joe FullerJoe Fuller has dedicated his retirement to serving others and supporting economic development efforts in Scott County. He is compassionate, and knows how to get things accomplished with humor and kindness. He served on the Mountain Empire Community College (MECC) Foundation board for six years and was a strong supporter of the Foundation’s mission. Since that time, he has been a generous donor to Foundation scholarships and special events. Because of Joe Fuller’s generosity and hard work, more students are receiving help in meeting their educational expenses, and they have more options for working in their local community. Joe’s mission and much of his life’s work has been creating a better life for others.

Edward H. and Marilynn BersoffEd and Marilynn Bersoff have dedicated themselves to being part of the solution for Northern Virginia. Our region faces a critical shortage of highly-trained, highly-skilled workers in a highly-technical workforce. Knowing the importance of hiring the very best faculty to teach our students, Ed and Marilynn chose to fund creation of the first endowed chair in the Virginia Community College System — The Edward H. and Marilynn D. Bersoff Endowed Chair for Computer and Information Sciences, held by NOVA Cybersecurity Professor Dr. Margaret Leary. This investment by the Bersoffs was forward-thinking and, again, helps put NOVA “ahead of the pack.” We are truly grateful for the many contributions made by Ed and Marilynn Bersoff and their commitment to our students and building this region into an information technology powerhouse.

Dorothy Cosby CookeDr. Cooke has been committed to the success of Rappahannock Community College (RCC) students for many decades, first as the Director of Student Services and then as a tireless volunteer, who created a scholarship endowment that will allow hundreds of future students to access higher education at RCC. Dr. Cooke may have retired as an employee of RCC, but she has never retired from helping the college fulfill its mission. She is an incredible spokesperson in our community. Her advocacy and hard work resulted in the establishment of an endowment and an extraordinary legacy gift to that fund from her neighbor Eldridge Cook. The James R. “Jim” Lindsey FamilyIf ever a family epitomized selfless philanthropy, it would be the family of Jim Lindsey. Jim was one of the first donors to the Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) Educational Foundation, when it was founded in 1981. He served as the Co-Chair of the Fulfill the Vision campaign, which raised $7.5 million for a much-needed college facility. His son, York Lindsey, also served on the Foundation Board, continuing the Lindsey family tradition. He continues to be a trusted advisor in Foundation business matters. In addition, the Lindseys have endowed two family scholarships at SWCC, which are awarded annually. They have also provided a life insurance policy through Jim’s estate planning that makes SWCC the beneficiary. Their legacy is etched upon the college’s history, upon the region, and upon the lives of the students whom they have helped.

Hampton Roads Community Foundation and Dr. Deborah DiCroce, President & CEO We are indeed very fortunate that Dr. Deborah DiCroce, who preceded me as president of Tidewater Community College (TCC), is now the President and CEO of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. Her years of experience in higher education, particularly in community colleges, provide Dr. DiCroce deep knowledge and unique understanding of our mission, our programs, our students, and our challenges. The Hampton Roads Community Foundation under Dr. DiCroce has adopted a focus on regionalism and economic resilience, which aligns with TCC’s mission of preparing the 21st century workforce. I am delighted that we can call upon not only the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, but also Dr. DiCroce herself, for inspiration and support.

Along with Michael’s brother, J.J., and their company, Valley Proteins, the Smiths have been longtime supporters of our most prestigious and competitive scholarships, the Valley Proteins Fellows program. Michael and Wendy made a lead gift of $1 million which launched our Rural Virginia Horseshoe Initiative to increase educational attainment in rural Virginia. And thanks to the annually-awarded grants named for their company, we have been able to begin and expand high-demand workforce programs at several colleges.
